Some Facts About Roses

When we think of red roses we understand the many usages of it. Maybe the perfect for the ‘special’ person. The perfect gift in Valentine’s Day. In Ancient Greece people used to associate roses with the Aphrodite goddess which is how the meaning of love started from roses. In many cultures’ history we also can see that roses have an important role and sometimes became a symbol for meanings. Most rose species are from China which spread around the world through time and they are one of the oldest flowers. But what are the roses used for today? Roses can be an important ingredient for skin care products, foods, spices, scents and perfumes, lotions... Different colors of roses and the number of them can express different meanings. Such as, we all know red roses give the meaning of love, yellow roses give the friendship meaning, white means innocence and many other colors for different meanings. Also one rose can mean love at first sight and fifteen can mean that you are sorry. Roses have different languages which can be useful to know when you are gifting it to someone. The important part of red roses for this book is coming from a special ingredient of red rose. Anthocyanins are water-soluble pigments which give the color red to the rose. This pigment can also be found in red cabbage, berries, redblue other fruits and vegetables, many other pink-red flowers. The interesting part of these anthocyanins are that they can change color in different pH levels. Anthocyanins will act by turning red-pink in acidic solutions. The stronger the acid is (<7 pH level) a stronger red color you will observe. In alcalis, (7> pH) these anthocyanins will turn blue-green. With this knowledge you can easily change the color of your pigment, paint and ink with anthocyanins. You can play with new colors by adding different acids and alcalis to your rose paint which you will learn about further in the book. You can also try with many solutions and also learn if the liquid is alcali or acid based on the reaction with anthocyanins. You are very free with experimenting and having fun with red roses and pigments.

Why More Sustainable Ink

Screen print paints have many components (binders, mediums, connecting materials, pigments) which cannot be considered as very sustainable. Many chemical components come together while making the different colors of screen print paint which has a negative impact on the environment. For this reason, I decided to come up with a more natural recipe for screen print paint from roses. The ingredients in these recipes are more organic and less harmful for the nature. It is responsible consumption production which is very easy to produce and repeat. I used red roses in this process. The interesting part is that the colors of different paints that can come out of a red rose. You can get yellow, green, blue, red, pink and many other varieties with mixing red rose pigment with different and more organic solutions. You are pretty much limitless and more environmentally-friendly. I tried using natural materials as much as possible. You can easily follow the recipes and make small changes while making the recipes as the way you want. You will need a few materials you can easily purchase. Small tip is that these paints work better on cloth. Keep in mind that the paint is water-soluble which will not stay the same after washing it. You can use this paint for non-washed cloths. I prefered using tote bags and the results came out very good.

Next time when your red roses are dried out don’t throw them away and make your own screen print paint!

3 red roses Alcohol Water Nori Paste

Step 1: Making the Liquid Ink

Coffee Filter Mortar Glass surface (glass slab) Palette Knife Teaspoon Oven Lino Cut Roller (optional)

Important: For all of the recipes you need dry red roses.

1) Start with drying your rose petals. (All the petals of the three red roses.) - You can dry them by laying all the petals in a sunny place for a few days. - More faster option is to dry them in the oven.

2) Preheat the oven for 80 Celcius. When it heats up lay your red petals from all 3 roses flat. Don’t put it on top of each other because that will slow down the process. After laying them all evenly bake them for 40-45 minutes. You will understand that the process is done when the petals turn all crispy. ( You can try crushing one of them just to make sure. If the petal crumbles in your hand it means that it has dried all up. )

3) Next step is to crush them into smaller pieces so they release more color. You can use a mortar for this. Put all your petals in your mortar and grind them into powder and smaller pieces. This process takes approximately 5 minutes. Keep in mind that not all of the petals will turn into powder. Some of them still remain in bigger pieces due to the humidity inside them.

4) We want to get rid of the bigger pieces in the rose powder. We can use a strainer for this part. You can make your powder go through the strainer into a cup. TIP: Shake the powder on the strainer to not waste any powder while your are getting rid of bigger chunks.

PART 1

Pure Rose Color Nr. 1

Making Natural Screen Print Ink from Red Rose - After you have rose powder in a cup you have to release the color of the powder. The main technique for this is adding alcohol. 5) Add 2 tsp of alcohol to your powder. TIP: You can use different kinds of alcohol such as Vodka, Gin and other liquids with high alcohol levels. Keep in mind that the color will be stronger on higher alcohol levels. You will immediately see the color change of the liquid after putting in the alcohol. To increase the level of fluidity and the amount of the ink you will have to use water.

6) Add 2 tsp of water in your liquid ink. 7) Mix and stir your mixture using a spoon until all gets even. You will realize that there are small particles from the rose powder in your mixture. This will affect the end paint which we don’t want.

8) Put your liquid ink through a coffee filter to get a more pure ink. This process takes approxiametly 10-15 minutes. The liquid ink is very valuable in the process. You have to be patient for it to finish dripping from the coffee filter.

Step 2: Making the Ink for Screenprint To make the paint more solid and less fluid you need to use some sort of paste. Otherwise, your paint will spread a lot on the surface you are printing on while screenprinting. - For this part you can use Nori Paste. Nori Paste is a paste used by Japanese artists for glue and making paint which is made from rice. 9) Add 2 tsp of Nori Paste on a glass slab and spread it using a palette knife. 10) You can now add your filtered ink on the Nori Paste. 11) To mix everything you have to use a palette knife. Mix the paint until every part of the paint is even and the same color. Optional: You can use Lino Cut Roller as well to mix more. After your paint is done you can put it in a cup and close its lid for the screenprinting part. 4

Quick Summary of Screen Printing and what to watch out for while using your paint 1) First step is to print your design on a transparent acetate sheet which will be your stencil for the later steps. 2) You need to use a special screen for this printing technique. Choosing the fabric screen for using your paint on cloth is better for your outcome. 3) Next step is to coat your screen with light-reactive emulsion liquid. Don’t use too much or too little of this emulsiuon liquid. When you see the thin layer coated that will be enough. 4) When the screen dries, the fourth step is to put your stencil under your coated screen. Your coated screen part has to be on the acetat paper and has to be touching it so the emulsion will happen. 5) You have to expose the coated screen and the design with a very bright light. There are machines for this. 6) Now after exposing your screen you can wash away the light reactive emulsion. You will realize your design popping up when you start washing the screen. 7) After your screen is washed and dried you can start using your paints. 8) Put a fabric/cloth under your screen and put some of your paint on the screen. Then, swipe your paint through the screen. With this you will realize the empty parts of the screen will make your paint pass through and your design will be printed.

What to Watch Out for Using the Natural Paint Depending on the fluiditiy of your paint, some of the natural paints can spread on your cloth more than expected. Especially the ones made with rice paste. Try not to apply too much pressure when you are swiping your paint on the screen. You can try a test round before the main print. Keep in mind that paints can look different colors depending on your surface. You can realize a different color of print coming out on the paper other than the cloth. However; keep in mind that the cloth shows the original color and the design more in this process. 20
