ESSAY - An Endeavor Towards Sustainability “If we cannot envision the world we would like to live in, we cannot work towards its creation. If we cannot place ourselves in it in our imagination, we will not believe it is possible “- Chellis Glendinning Sustainable design is not just about today; it is about creating the framework and laying the groundwork for a built environment that we can pass on with pride to future generations. To build a sustainable society, we have to take a long overview, from our past through our present and into the future. We need to have a thorough understanding of the successful vernacular architecture and patterns of living of the past, which balanced the social, economic and environment factors. Review of the mostly unsuccessful motorized driven pattern of the recent past and present, along with prediction of the changing requirements of the society is required. This deep understanding is required to know and implement, whether small or radical changes are required in our societies to make them sustainable, or do we need a completely new approach when new cities or neighborhoods are being built. Land use and infrastructure are the most long-lasting and deterministic attributes of human settlements in measure of ecological footprint of a society. In certain cities of India, We need integrated approach and reforms in land use and infrastructure itself in creating sustainable communities, where the city will not be looked at as disconnected pieces of land or islands with boundaries but planned as integrated walkable and diverse urbanism of high performance buildings and infrastructure integrated with ecological infrastructure like wetlands, forests as integral part of our lives, well integrated in the land-use. Cities where urban environment would respect and engage natural ecological systems aesthetically, not only to provide us with the oxygen rich air but to also perform their other natural functions such as filter rain water, reduce heat island effect and enhance biodiversity to create more beautiful social-public spaces . Good Urban design would help build sustainable societies by maintaining and enhancing the quality of life, community interests, needs and culture through integration of economic development, environmental protection and social health and well being, sense of belonging and pride in the community, in an mutually reinforcing manner. Role of Architecture in the Road to Sustainability. Buildings and infrastructure consume vast amounts of resources and produce tons of waste, and threaten the ecological systems that support life. Today, the ecological crisis and dwindling resources, present an urgent need to work out a responsible approach to create, construct and maintain buildings and infrastructure, which while minimizing negative impact on the environment, are resource efficient and healthy for inhabitants over their entire life cycle. Architecture – A Powerful Tool in the Transformation. An architecture that responds deeply to the ecological challenges of today, while recognizing that when buildings delight our senses and rekindled our spirit, can inspire us to tread more lightly on our planet. Architecture can create experiences to transform beings. Experiences which can transcend the spirit and experiences which transform the plain into poetic, the everyday into the sublime. Architecture that believes that the life sustaining beauty of nature has the power to reconnect people with themselves and experience themselves as living beings on a living earth .

With this reconnection and experience, people will have the compassion and the desire to undertake what must be done to heal the planet. Architecture, that is in synchronization with nature, in reverence to nature and its power, architecture that believes in using the power of natural forces - sun, wind, earth and water to create healthy, comfortable habitat for the people, is sustainable. sun, wind ,earth and water to create healthy, comfortable habitat for the people , is sustainable. Today, more than ever, we need to return to our essential source of life-nature- to design our way into a more sustainable future. Our Works With the above belief, we have always sought new effective ways to integrate both passive and active systems into our designs that combine the lessons of ancient vernacular designs with the state of art technologies. In responding to the forces of nature, our projects address the ecological concerns while also answering design, aesthetic and human aspirations. I have found that a number of solutions to the questions are in nature itself and hence, it started playing a progressive and significant role in our designs. Each project taught us something new and valuable and every new project was taken up with new enthusiasm and commitment to making it closer to being restorative to nature. Our design ensures that the natural functions are not only preserved but enhanced whenever possible. Philosphy Creating spaces where there is always time and place for nature.... Creating places where people find a moment for nature; and then ultimately themselves. “Nature’s walk “ in Green Boulevard, “the boulevard” in Lotus Boulevard and Parikrama in Lotus Panache, “connections”(central spine with ghats) of Wipro campus bind ecology with human social spacial experiences to reconnect man with nature, to experience the healing and rejuvenating touch of nature. All these routes are interwoven with rich socio cultural hubs, adding varied and creating rich stimulating experiences. We feel that when we make people experience a vision and simultaneously prove what can be done step by step to achieve it, they will share our enthusiasm and be encouraged to positively implement it. Sport City is an integrated residential township , with retail, sports academies, school, hospital, offering various options of aspirational lifestyle choices with apartment sizes ranging from 900 to 5000 sq. ft. Each neighbourhood is planned as a self sufficient zone and yet every zone is designed to have something diverse and new to offer to the other neighborhood. The walkways, jogging tracks, planned as

a meandering loop around the golf course, intercepted with community amenities, ;helps to create a versatile, vibrant community life and further weaves together all the small neighborhoods which are more based on socio economic clustering. Sports City is a place where the current generation relinquishes and watch the next generation learn, grow, nurture passions and explore boundaries.


Lotus Boulevard

Nestled amidst 30 acres of tranquil and solace, Lotus Boulevard is the new world suburban habitat. Lotus Boulevard is unique in terms of its planning as it has prioritized the regeneration of community living and pedestrian movement. Spacial organisation of the complex enhances and facilitates social interaction and community living . The development is planned in clusters of towers. Each cluster is planned with its own green court ,and hence there are a series of courts which connect to the central landscaped community greens.

The LEED Platinum club planned to cater to the varied social ,recreation and health needs of all age groups. Designed around series of courts as source for light and ventilation ,uses ancient knowledge of stack effect to keep interiors well ventilated and cool. Lotus Boulevard owns its name to its central Green Avenue, lined by trees,where it intends to become an oasis to health and rejuvenation.

A green habitat, where the architecture facilitates the modern contemporary lifestyle , taking care of needs of comfort and privacy of the inhabitants as well as giving opportunities for social living for health and well being of the people in an environmentally responsible way. Lotus Boulevard Espacia showcases apartments planned around the inward looking, semi enclosed,

semi shaded, a large central landscaped court, where one of the diagonal nodes is sculpted to form Club Platino. Each apartment is designed to get views of both central greens and outside landscapes/city. Club, located near the entrance of the complex, forms a beautiful transition space between outside world and the inner central garden.

The high-end luxury apartments of Lotus 300 are designed as high rise towers with soft and curved silhouettes, consisting of 6 towers facing North -South, forming a loop around beautifully landscaped zone. The towers are sculpted and layered by larger apartments at the bottom and the smaller ones above, culminating with penthouses at the top. Cluster of two towers each, forms a private green areas on one side and semi public landscape court on the other

to further merge into the larger semipublic green Zone. Optimum window wall ratio, high performance glass, AAC insulated external block work, large balconies, Jali screen on east west side for shading and cross ventilation in the apartment are some of the strategies used to lower the energy consumption and increase occupant comfort.

Vibrant in its essence, Lotus Zing is a contemporary design that takes the learning of ancient climate responsive architecture, while addressing and enhancing needs and lifestyle of present day youth. The planning involved arrangement of the apartments to avail maximum cross-ventilation and day-lighting, most of apartments open on three sides and avail external landscape views. Designed around two landscaped courts, with the

club, shops, sports and community facilities as social activity hubs at the cross junction of the two court clusters, Lotus Zing engages and draws together people, to create a versatile and vibrant social community life. The sunken court with amphitheater at the heart of the complex and triangulated landscapes, modulate and add dynamism to the complex which otherwise has simple and straight line towers as the background.

With the aim of creating a habitat that enhances quality of living and offers best opportunities of health and rejuvenation to inhabitants; Lotus Panache is designed as medium to high rise and high density walk able and lively community. The premium towers are planned within the central green zone ,as an island surrounded by water bodies, mounds and moats. The entire community life and activities including shopping, clubs, jogging area, meditation zones are braided around this island through a common pedestrian linkage. All the smaller cluster greens are linked to this main pedes-

trian walk around the island. The landscape and pedestrian areas are maximised by limiting the road network to site perimeter. The design consciously optimizes passive strategies to meet explicit performance goals; such as proper building orientation, maximized natural ventilation and better daylight penetration. Insulated AAC external blockwork, optimum window to wall ratio and vertical landscaping helps minimize heat gain in the buildings.

Greenopolis

Greenopolis takes up the challenge of weaving together a community life, on a site which has too many small segments and bends, with the intent of creating a vibrant and healthy community. Each cluster is planned to form a shaded and beautiful landscape court, hence forming hierarchy of social spaces. The project minimizes roads, paved areas, basement areas, and uses natural systems like bioswales,

rain gardens to filter, treat and harvest rain water ecologically, thereby reducing storm water lines and gutter systems by at least 30 percent. Focusing on the efficient use of energy, water and building materials, Greenopolis is a blend of latest green technologies with passive architecture design,creating an eco-friendly habitat encompassing all elements for the spiritual and physical well being of the residents.

“Good design radiates an unquestioned sense of belonging. The best design elements are neither new nor old; they are simply part of the fabric of creation.” Inspired by traditional Indian architecture, International Home Décor Park is planned with a series of interflowing , interconnected courts, which are designed around a central green axis, with a dynamic

water body. Each court is landscaped and designed differently to create a rich , diverse and versatile experience . The central green zone with ghats, cafeterias, amphitheatre is a perfect setting as spillover interaction and rejuvenation space in the morning ,and celebration and entertainment zone in the evening. Built and unbuilt coexist and merge so beautifully , as if paying reverence to each other.

Green Boulevard

Green Boulevard, with a built-up area of approximately a million Sq. Ft. located at Noida, is one of the most environment friendly Core & Shell project in India and earned the status of being World’s one of the ten Largest Platinum rated LEED certified Green Buildings from USGBC in the Core & Shell category. It is based on the concept of creating a congenial workplace community through the design of a campus-like environment, which facilitates and enhances shared spaces , amenities and resources.

The offices start from second floor upwards, leaving the ground and lower ground floor open to create the public interaction and facility zone. The width of the office floor plates are designed to get in ample glare-free natural light and outdoor landscape views from either side. The buildings envelop (walls and roof) is well insulated and the glazing used are high performance double glass units. The design team found effective ways to integrate both passive and active systems to make a highly energy efficient campus . Approximately 800-850 sqft of office space is air conditioned by just one ton of air conditioning.


Tech Boulevard

Tech boulevard, buildings are designed around a central court in such a way that each tower gets it own identity and visibility while “being part of the whole� campus; sharing resources and spaces for efficiencies and interaction. Sunken courts and stilted areas at the periphery of the towers not only form part of the social space of the central court, but also bind the campus by connecting public realm and social spaces with common facilities like gymnasiums, cafeterias, etc.

Among the environmental design strategies are mutual shading of buildings, a central shaded court, optimum window to wall ratios, and service cores of the towers on the west and east to block harsh sunlight. Low ground coverage and stilts, and 90 % parking in the basement, are all strategies to help reduce heat island effect. Recycling and treatment of waste water for flushing, landscaping, and for cooling towers are part of the strategy of water conservation.


Delhi-One

Delhi one is the contemporary landmark project embodying the spirit of modern living, burnished with the lustrous patina of a long tradition of Luxury. Delhi One is a modern, high-rise, mixed-use community, inspired by the elements of nature. Life at Delhi One is a holistic experience where various aspects of daily living are woven into a seamless pattern. A mix of hotels, service apartments, offices and retail, designed to maintain a dynamic and animated public realm throughout the day and night. Residents are able to work and live within a densely planned area where every amenity is within walking

distance. Mixed-use also presents a strong foundation for energy balance, with individual components using energy at different times, while reinforcing the breadth of economic and social activity of the area. The residential buildings which rise to 190 m, have a breathable second skin in the form of horizontal weaves and thermal buffer for the main building, shielding the interior spaces from Delhi’s extreme summer and winter climates. Efficient energy management is at the heart of the design, with strategies including low-carbon energy generation.

Wipro Technologies

Located at a dynamic corner, a cross junction of two roads, the image-ability of the building comes from the inverted cone which dominates the facade. The tip of this cone is conceptualized as the seed of the software world, which grows both horizontally and vertically to symbolize the growth in technology. This dynamic flower, the symbol of Wipro, floating on water, forms the main public realm, the link between the outside and inside. It is here that the reception, conferences, library, and training rooms are located.

With its Platinum LEED rating the building proves to be an energy efficient building (51 % over Ashrae base case). Notable features include a reduced overall conductance for the envelops, terrace gardens, high-performance glass with optimum visual light transmittance, exterior light shelves and overhangs for all windows, efficient chillers, efficient lighting, and amply daylight spaces with photo sensor controls. The courtyard acts as a multi-function device , it acts as a light well, a microclimatic generator, and a social space .All the office work areas are arranged around this central court.


Computer Science Corporation (CSC)

CSC is conceived as a rational, sentient campus that owes its distinctive style to the harmonious composition between built and un-built. The campus has a cohesiveness that results from a consistent palette of simple, earthly-tone materials, colors and character. The exposed brickwork facades of the towers make them stand in unison, giving the campus a unique and strong identity, while retaining each tower’s distinctiveness. The office towers are planned around a large central landscape zone. These blocks are interconnected at

different levels to provide them with the flexibility to function both independently and cohesively. The rectangular floor slabs serve two purposes: maximize utilization of space and efficient and flexible planning. The ground and lower ground spaces with reception, cafes opening into landscape sunken courts, gymnasium, etc. are planned to be receptive to public interactions whereas upper floors are more private and kept secluded for working efficiency.

Patni Campus

The design of Patni Campus, situated in a suburban sprawl of Noida, is inspired by the traditional introvert Indian haveli typology. The basic design concept is that of simple straight lined, low-key architecture in context with the surroundings, site and climate. Passive (architectural) and active (mechanical/electrical) strategies have been intelligently amalgamated to create a cost effective, energy efficient and occupant friendly campus. The project achieved LEED platinum rating (with an energy saving of 38 % over Ashrae base case) in USGBC NC category.

The building is designed around two landscaped courtyards with water bodies, plants and sculptures as visual nodes. The courtyard acts as a light well and a microclimate generator. The water body placed under a narrow stilted area,along the wind direction ,cools the wind flowing into the court through both ventury effect and evaporative cooling, helping in lowering the ambient temperature of the building

Spazedge

Spazedge is designed with two towers and a central reception atrium. The triple height circular atrium with skylight connects the two building and form a grand entry to the two buildings. The atrium opens at the rear into a semi private plaza ,which forms a spill over rejuvenation zone of all the offices. Shops, restaurants and public areas are designed at the ground floor and private offices spaces on upper floors.

The two towers are N-S oriented with cores in E-W direction. Optimum window wall ratio along with optimised width of the towers, allows to capture glare free natural daylight throughout the day, while reducing heat gain. Buildings are staggered in a way to avail visibility to both the towers from the main road.


Wipro Campus

The Wipro Campus Noida has been designed to provide an interactive campus environment in a tranquil setting. The central green spine with its riverlet , sculpted from the natural depression in the site as rain water harvesting zone,forms the main rejuvenation focal zone of the campus .All activities of the campus are planned around the banks of this spine. The reception, library, and recreational areas are

curvilinear sculpted forms, in contrast to the efficient, straight and rectangular forms of the office blocks. The software development block sets a benchmark in energy efficient design, saving almost 50 % energy over the ashrae base case. Climate responsive design ,with N-S orientation, optimum window wall ratio, optimum depth of building to capture maximum glare free daylight, radiant cooling, pre cooling of fresh air, free cooling, all help the project acheive very high energy efficiency.

Oxygen Boulevard

Oxygen, is an IT SEZ, designed as an integrated business complex with multiple office towers sharing common facilities and amenities. The complex is planned in a way to give individuality and identity to each building, and yet making them part of the campus. The buildings are arranged to form enclosed and semi-enclosed landscape courts. These courts are all interconnected to a larger public space which

is vibrant with cafes, walkways, amphitheatre. The sunken courts which are extension of public facilities like cafeterias, gyms etc, not only bring light and ventilation at lower ground level, but also give interesting dynamisms to the public realm. All vehicular circulation and building entrance forecourts are planned at ground level along the perimeter, leaving the 9 acres of upper ground for creating beautifully landscaped pedestrianised community.

Inspired with its hospitality grandeur, the underlining design concept is to emphasize this feeling upon arrival of the guests. The grand two level landscaped court, with entries to the hotel lobby at the upper level and service apartments and shopping arcade at lower level respectively, is interwoven around a

welcoming central circular water feature and rising greens. The smart clean lines of the glass, steel, wood and stone give the hotel its modern aesthetics. The staggering and random wooden panels add to the touch of playfulness, intrigue and warmth.


Four Seasons

Rising 110 meters, this five-star luxury hotel is part of the signature mixed-use development Delhi-One, the new benchmark for 21st-century living in Delhi. The building’s sculptural presence and curved forms of the three serviced apartment towers, architecturally defines the hotel’s relationship with the rectilinear buildings of the Delhi-One masterplan. The hotel is located prominently on the southern edge of the site, maximizing its presence and optimizing solar exposure & views. Vertical fins give the building a shimmering facade, distinguishing is from its context whilst still blending in the surroundings.

Lotus Valley School

Lotus Valley is a fully air conditioned international school replete with a 1,200 capacity auditorium, cafeteria, playground, indoor and outdoor swimming pool, bowling alley, squash court, skating ring, library, gymnasium, arts and craft facility with special amenities for the specially abled students. The concept for its planning is to achieve a safe and climatically controlled environment for students of all age groups , and providing maximum day lighting and ventilation in classrooms, as well as keeping vehicular movement around the periphery of

the school without disturbing student movement in the campus. The triple height atrium forms the covered,safe and secure ,social space of the school . Emphasis is also given on the image-ability of the building as one approaches and moves towards the courtyard through an asymmetrical entrance, spiral path approach .Proper visual linkage between different levels is rendered for easy access and to avoid confusion.

Shunya - Net Zero Energy Home

Shunya, is created on the concept of zero waste,zero water and net zero energy.Shunya works on the principle of attaining maximum efficiency in energy, material, water as well as waste minimization; hence, showcasing how a common man can live sustainably.Shunya has been made in 25 days by using redundant cargo containers, and using other waste materials, transforming them in India’s first working model of a net zero energy home. This house raises the bar on is energy efficiency . Running off electricity grid , with energy consumption as low as 1.34 watts/persqft (regular houses consume 8-10 watts/persqft);Shunya , produces as much energy as it uses on

annual basis. This building is a prototype of a net zero energy house.A net zero energy can be either independent from the energy grid supply or else the net balance of electricity drawn and supplied to and from the grid by the building could be Zero. To reach net zero affordably, the design team worked aggressively to reduce to bare minimum ,the energy demands of the building using innovative passive and active building design strategies like proper building orientation, use of courtyard and verandahs, effective building envelope, daylight, natural ventilation, radiant cooling, sensor based lighting etc

Net Zero Energy School

The design concept of the school is to connect children with nature and natural surroundings; to develop in each student a comprehensive understanding of the basic patterns and process by which nature sustains life. The building design concept takes inspiration from a sea shell and is designed to achieve safe, protected and healthy environment for students. There are nine classrooms in three shells. Each shell is self contained unit with cluster of three indoor class rooms and outdoor classroom area, play area around the central open to sky courtyard. Though all shells are identical in shape, for modularity and cost effectiveness, yet each cluster has different material treatment for entrance. The building is designed to serve dual

purpose, in morning it will functions as a pre-nursery school and from noon it will be an exhibition, learning and interaction space for neighborhood community. To be constructed from low embodied energy and local materials like flyash brick ,double layered ferrocement shell with sandwiched insulation, GRC jalis ,high performance glass;school blends latest technologies like radiant cooling, free cooling, efficient equipments along with passive techniques to lower energy consumption to bare minimum of 1.7 watts per sqft ,which is then catered by the solar panels. Concepts of natural systems to filter and harvest rainwater like bioswales and rain gardens are further explored in this project

A graduate from Sushant School of Architecture, Sheetal has been promoting Sustainability and creating awareness the community really aggresively. Her belief in the ‘Go Green’ manta is reflected in her every design thought.

Mona is a graduate from Sushant School of Architecture, with over 12 years of experience. Her forte in building design with a focus on green architecture has made her association with D&D everlasting. She firmly belives that aesthetics & environment conciousness can go hand in hand.

Sheetal Rakheja is an accredited LEED Green Building professional Executive member of Indian Green Building Council,IGBC President of International Fenestration Forum, IFF Visiting Faculty at Various Schools of Architecture

In her tenure of 10 years with ‘D&D’ three of the many projects she has worked on have received ‘LEED PLATINUM RATING’, while three others have received ‘ LEED GOLD RATING’ from IGBC

Ruchi Vig, Design Manager

She is presently writing the Sustainability clause for National Building Code

Ruchi is a skilled Architect, passed out from a renowned College in Delhi. Ruchi’s in depth knowledge of services and hands on expierence in design coordination, helps the team to amalgamate the best & latest technology with architecture in cost effective ways. A gifted problem solver, who enjoys working with & taking the team along always.

Akshay Garg, Head Audit & Quality Control

Interiors team

Akshay is a graduate from Department of Architecture, Maharaja Sayaji Rao University of Baroda (Vadodara), Gujarat. Out of 21 years of experience in Designing & Detailing of Architecture Projects, he has 15 years plus of hands on experience only in Real Estate Designing, Coordination & Execution.

Madhu Menon, Project Manager Madhu completed his architecture studies from Shivaji University, Kohlapur in 1999. With over 14 years of experience, Madhu has executed many Indian and International projects ranging from high-end residential towers to commercial to five star hotels in Dubai. He is an excellent team player and constantly strives for improvement.

Priyanka Sharma, GM - Business Development With over 9 years of experience in business development, Priyanka has worked with both national & international Architecture & Engineering design firms. Her professional and organized way of working has made her an asset to the team. Priyanka is responsible for handling existing clients, new business as well as media & communication.

Vikram Sharma, Senior Architect Vikram Sharma is an Interior Architect with over 13 years of experience. Gifted with creativity, he has a keen eye for fine details and has been an unbiased supporter of Sustainability. Vikram has maximized the use of eco-friendly, recyclable material in his projects. . He has always proved to be a tool for converting dreams in to realty in least of time and the best of spaces

Sachin Sood, Senior Architect A fine architect with over 12 years of experience. He passed out in 2001 from a reputed college in Maharashtra. Sachin has been a great asset to the Interior team. He has a fine eye for details and aesthetics.

She has been an asset to our sustainability team and made her contributions to many projects. She is also a certified TERI GRIHA trainer.

Jyoti Chaturvedi, Environmental Architect With her zeal to make this planet a better place, Jyoti has two Master’s degree to her name, in Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering from renowned and reputed universities in India. With over 8 years of experience, Jyoti has in depth knowledge of her subject and has been a key player in the success of our projects.

With over 10 years of experience, she has the ability of creating the most interesting landscapes, Akanksha has always believed in the importance of landscape design in any project and how it can change the look and feel of the designed spaces.
