“Philpot: Reverberation”

Featuring the Works of Artist Bret Philpot By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA (August 29, 2016) – Ted Casablanca Gallery, located in downtown Palm Springs, announced the gallery will launch the 2016-2017 season with its very first oneperson exhibition, “Philpot: Reverberation,” featuring the works of painter and sculptor Bret Philpot. “Reverberation,” for Philpot, is a study of the translation of music and sound onto surfaces in a language he understands. The exhibition runs October

1 – November 1, 2016. An opening reception honoring the artist will be held at the gallery, located at 388 N. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, on Saturday, October 1 from 5 – 8 p.m. For Philpot, this most recent series represents a new adventure, allowing music to steer his work in a direction previously unknown to his collectors. Balancing creative spirit with discipline of sound, much the way a musician composes music, Philpot has allowed his artistic

voice to translate sound in a manner that is uniquely his, and is demonstrated in his newest artworks. “My works represent the fusion of many different influences,” said Philpot. “It’s like uniting the sounds and lights of the Sahara Tent with the deep cultural landscape of Northern New Mexico.” “Bret Philpot is a local legend who has a truly moving breadth of contemporary work,“ said Ted Casablanca Continues on Page 2

Comic Con 2016 Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Inaugural Comic Con Palm Springs started with a bang on Friday, August 26th. There was a ribbon cutting to start the event in grand style. The Iconic Comic Book guru Stan Lee, Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon, founder of Palm Springs Comic Con, Christopher Spellman and the original Hulk portrayer, Lou Farrigno, did the ribbon-cutting honors. Thousands of people waiting in line to enter this first ever Comic Con in the Valley at the Palm Springs Convention Center. It took that large facility to be able to hold the influx of people wanting to see what a

Comic Con event was like. Comic book fans were in awe of all the vendors that sold not only Comic books, but everything related to Comics and their super heroes. The floor was lined with booths that sold posters, toys, T-shirts, memorabilia, costumes and masks, art work, etc. and of course all the comics you could want to fill a collection. Comic Book artists had booths where you could get an autograph or buy an original work of art or just meet and talk to the artists. Some of the artists were busy drawing, and fans could watch them at work.

I was amazed at the amount of people that entered the Convention Center. The line was never ending, and people brought their children to see first-hand what goes on at a Comic Con Convention. People were stopping at vendors to look or talk to them about their collections. There were groups of people talking to the artists. Others took time out to partake of a little food and beverage and watch all the many costumed fans. Parents even had their children in costume. The costumes ranged from Super Heroes to Villains. Fans of Stan Lee purchased tickets to get an autograph from him or had their photo taken with him. Stan Lee is the godfather of comics and is considered the person that got Marvel Comics

Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon, Comic Book Icon and special guest, Stan Lee with creator of Comic Con Palm Springs, Christopher Spellman, at the ribbon cutting Photo by Pat Krause and Super Heroes to be the big entity that it has become. Almost everyone has read a comic in his youth, and some like me still have a lot of those comics in a box somewhere. Hundreds of Stan Lee fans

Comic Con Sunday, Stan Lee Q&A Story and Photos by Pat Krause Comic Con Palm Springs has proven to be another big convention for our Valley. Thousands of people came every day, as there was one event after another. There were game rooms, Panels, guest speakers, a zombie walk, raffles, prizes, seminars, and workshops with comic book professionals actors and so much more. This was such a well-planned convention. There were posters set up in the lobby with costumed people for photographs and more inside the main room, as it seems everyone has a cell phone to take photos these days. This was better than Halloween as everyone likes to dress up sometime and this was the biggest venue for that. The costumes ranged from a simple outfit to a very elaborate comic book

hero costume complete with swords and other weapons. It was hard to determine who was the professional or a costumed artist and everyone else. This event was the biggest costume party, and fans were eager to take photos of those in costume or be photographed. There was a Stan Lee table full of Stan Lee dolls, Pop’s toys, autographed photos, and even a limited edition of a Stan Lee guitar. Stan Lee is the biggest name in Comics and is a legend in the industry. Stan Lee held a panel in the main ballroom area that could handle all the people that wanted to attend. Stan Lee would answer questions from the audience and tell about his life in comics that have lasted over 70 years. He told about his start in comics and never thought it would become as big as

it has. He was President of Marvel Comics but liked being an editor more. He created a lot of fictional characters like Spider-man, The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, The X-men and many more. He said he would think up a super hero and then ask the artists to create them, costumes and all. He was the writer and idea man and said he had the best artists to work with. He said he was an artist but didn’t pursue that part in his career. Another comic icon, Todd Mcfarlane was part of the Sunday Q&A with Stan Lee. Todd created the comic SPAWN and drew the Hulk, Barman, Spiderman, and other for comic book publishers. They joked with each other on stage while Todd asked Stan questions. Stan Lee has made comics a worldwide success that has been made into newspaper September 2, 2016

stood in line to buy those tickets and Stan Lee signed autographs all three days. This is an amazing 93-year-old man who is humbled by his success that has lasted for 7 decades.

Ingles wore a Power Rangers costume and invited guests to his Costume Party that was a part of Comic Con on Saturday night, August 27th. BB is known for his costume parties that are held in Palm Springs on holidays. Many of the events connected to Comic Con were held at the Renaissance Hotel in Palm Springs. Other Palm Springs businesses held after parties, concerts, costume parties and more. Guests were treated to pasta dishes, a variety of small tacos, A salad table and delicious desserts. The upstairs of LULUs was filled with people all excited about the upcoming Comic Con and what they were hoping it would be like. Owners Barbara and Jerry Keller came up to greet the guests as well. There were a few others in costume that was going to be a big part of the event. This first Comic Con Palm Springs was going to be a huge event bringing in comic lovers from all over, many coming from far away just for these events.

Stan Lee and Todd McFarlane strips, movies, and television. Stan Lee has made cameo appearances in several films and said if you got up to get popcorn at the movie you would have missed his cameo spot. Both Todd and Stan gave advice to all the people that want to get

into the making of Comic Books. Stan Lee gave Todd a pin he designed that shows two hands, one black and one white that says RESPECT on the top and said everyone should wear one to remind us all about showing respect for everyone. www.desertstarweekly.com

“As Straw Before the Wind” - Needs More Wheat & Less Chaff

Anyone who has ever needed the services of a caretaker, either temporarily or permanently, may have been fortunate enough to have a Filipino caregiver. With over 400 nursing schools and approximately 80,000 students, the Philippines is the world’s largest provider of trained nurses who tend to their flock in the most loving, caring way. That said, Nene Santos, a not so warm and fuzzy Filipina nurse played by Tita Pambid, is the lead character in the world

premiere of Felix Racelis’ “As Straw Before the Wind,” on stage at the Ruby Theatre at The Complex in Hollywood. The story revolves around Santos. She is the owner of a small convalescent home in the San Gabriel Valley. It is not exactly a thriving business as there are only two residents – a crusty old wheel chair bound Poncing Enrile, a.k.a. grandpa, played by Muni Zano. The character is a former FilipinoAmerican Army Captain who served under General Douglas MacArthur. He is quite unhappy that his daughter Maria, played by Rochelle Lozano, put him in this facility. He ruminates: “Our children hide us away like dogs.” Zano is the only real professional in the cast and gives a believable performance despite the poor direction by Lesley Asistio. The other resident of this facility is Mildred Novak who is well on her way to senility, and is pretty much confined to a walker. The role is poorly played by Anita Borcia, who is guilty of “indicating” her characterization, which in acting terms means faking crying or other emotions instead of actually delivering an honest performance. Getting back to 65-year-old Santos, who has occasional flashbacks to her painful childhood, we would not call her a loving caretaker as her ambition to buy an additional property to house more residents, trumps her concern for her current patients. For example, grandpa’s daughter made arrangements for her father to have a private room. Without asking, nurse Santos informs him that he has to share his room with another person until she builds a new facility which, given that she’s turned down by the bank for a loan,

L-R: Muni Zano as Poncing Enrile, Tita Pambid as Nene Santos and Anita Borcia as Mildred Novak in Felix Racelis’ “As Straw Before the Wind.” Photo: Michael Helms Photography could basically never happen. Grandpa is understandably furious citing his military background, arguing that he deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. When he continues to balk, the good nurse puts him in “restraints,” which were just silly silky strands of ribbon. Rounding out the cast is Santos’ young daughter, Pilita, her assistant who is being groomed to take over the business some day. However, she has other plans for her future. Played by Sarnica Lim, this young actress is not quite ready for “prime time” as she seemed lost in trying to deliver a believable performance. Given the extraordinary history of Filipinos as care givers, I really wanted to like this production, but it is so badly directed by Asistio, who clearly could not elicit anything close to fully actualized performances. Perhaps one of the most outrageous lack of theatricality was in the set changes where, instead of using other members of the cast such as Doan Nguyen and Gabriel Garcia, both of

whom played multiple roles, wheelchair bound Grandpa, and walker-dependent Novak, break character and assist in set changes, totally destroying the suspension of disbelief. Granted, there was practically no budget, which mitigated any real production values. That restriction is understandable and easily forgiven, but to ignore basic theatre craft just bespeaks of amateurs. According to press notes, the playwright grew up with survivors of World War II and, “The majority of the women in my family were nurses.” Perhaps his own personal experiences, motivated the playwright to write “As Straw Before The Wind,” and enlist Lesley Asistio to direct his play. Despite honorable intentions, the association turned out to be an artistically bankrupt alliance. It is difficult to say how Racelis’ interesting material would fare under a more

professional cast and seasoned director, as the story is really compelling as it does touch on several aspects of the human condition – from the warehousing of the elderly to ambition and childhood experiences that haunt us. Perhaps he was thinking the same thing as he did check his email from time to time during the performance. ‘Me Before You,’ ‘Quantico’ and ‘9 Months That Made You’ Now on DVD

Me Before You As I sat down to write this column I marveled to myself: “Where did the summer go?” It seemed that spring had just recently sprung, then came summer with the kids home from school and now suddenly not only spring, but summer has slipped by. At this rate Christmas and Chanukah are just around the corner. Looking back at the recent past, two fine family films were released in August. One was the new version of Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon.” Unlike the earlier version, this dragon is not a cartoon, he is a computer generated fantasy creature who stands 24 feet tall. He is soft, green and loyal to those he loves like the little boy in the story. This dragon will not only captivate your imagination, he will steal your heart as well. And for Mom, Robert Redford is also in the film. The other late summer film of note, is “Florence Foster Jenkins.” It is too adult for the younger kids in

9 Months That Made You the family, but it will be fun for teens and older family members who enjoy a good comedy with plenty of heart. Meryl Streep stars as the title character, Florence, with Hugh Grant co-starring as her manager and partner in life. This is a true story about a wealthy socialite who loved to sing, not realizing that she was tone deaf. Usually her protective ‘husband’ manager was able to shield her from critics, but things change when she sings at Carnegie Hall in 1944. Funny, sad and well worth seeing. Presently there are not too many new films to enjoy so the next best thing to going to the movies is to bring the movies home to you via DVD. And this method is cheaper since the whole family can sit down and watch a show together for just one very small rental fee. Here are a few suggestions for DVD viewing. If you are romantic at heart, don’t miss seeing “Me Before You,” which arrives on Blu-ray, DVD and digital

HD from MGM and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment August 30. The film is based on the critically acclaimed, bestselling novel by Jojo Moyes, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. When Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke, “Game of Thrones”) unexpectedly loses her job as a waitress she scrambles to find employment as soon as possible since her tight-knit family relies on her salary to stay afloat. In desperation, she accepts the job as caregiver to Will Traynor. Prior to a terrible car accident Will was a wealthy young banker with an adventurous soul. He loved life and lived it to the fullest, but since the crash he has no desire to live. He now keeps everyone at a distance. Things change dramatically when Louisa (Lou) takes the job. Unlike his family, Lou refuses to cater to his overbearing attitude and mood swings. Her joy and sparkling personality, combined with her no nonsense spirit, are hard

for Will to ignore. She is determined to show him that life is still worth living and eventually she encourages him to join her in a series of adventures that change both of their lives in ways they never expected. The DVD package comes with added bonus features that include outtakes, deleted scenes and a segment called “Me Before You--From Page to Screen.” Rated PG-13 for some thematic elements and some suggestive material.

“Quantico: The Complete First Season” comes to DVD on September 13, starring Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra. In the series Chopra is Alex Parrish, one of a diverse group of young recruits at the FBI Quantico Base. Despite intriguing personal secrets and complicated pasts, Alex and her fellow “NATS” (New Agents in Training) are the best, brightest, most thoroughly vetted candidates in the U.S., so it seems impossible that one of them could be a traitor. The DVD

has many bonus features that include: Bloopers, Deleted Scenes and a featurette entitled “Who Did It? False Leads, Theories and Red Herrings” in which the cast reflects on not knowing who was the culprit until the very end of the series, and the various theories they held about his or her identity and more. Running time is approximately 946 minutes for the 22 episodes (5 discs). This does not include the bonus feature materials.

••••••••••••••

From PBS comes “ 9 Months That Made You” which is all about the lasting effects of our time in the womb. Mom and Dad, if you haven’t figured out how to tell your kids about the birds and the bees, this may be a very helpful guide. Discover the thrilling story of how you were made, from the moment of conception to the moment of birth 280 days later. In three episodes this breakthrough series charts how 100 trillion cells come together to make that unique individual--You.

Gene Wilder, star of ‘Blazing Saddles’ & ‘Willy Wonka’, dies at 83 By Desert Star Staff Actor Gene Wilder has departed for the giant chocolate factory in the sky. His family says he passed away from complications of Alzheimer’s disease, at the age of 83. Wilder died Sunday night in Stamford, Connecticut, his nephew Jordan Walker-Pearlman said. The family chose not to disclose Wilder’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis three years ago. “The decision to wait until this time to disclose his condition wasn’t vanity, but more so that the countless young children that would smile or call out to him ‘there’s Willy Wonka’, would not have to be then exposed to an adult, referencing illness or trouble and causing delight to travel to worry, disappointment or confusion,” the family said in a statement. “He simply couldn’t bear the idea of one less smile in the world.” Born Jerome Silberman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,

Wilder began acting at the age of 12. Wilder’s stage name came from the main character of Thomas Wolfe’s novel Look Homeward, Angel and from the playwright Thornton Wilder. Later in life, he said his psychoanalyst suggested that his name honored his mother, Jeanne. Although his career began in the theater, he was known as a comedic icon for his role in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and for his work with director Mel Brooks in a slew of movies, including Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and The Producers. He was nominated, but did not win, Oscars for his portrayal of Leo Bloom in The Producers and for co-writing Young Frankenstein with Brooks. Wilder also paired several times with comedian Richard Pryor, but said that the two men were not close friends. Wilder was married four times, to actress-playwright

Mary Mercier, Mary Joan Schutz, Saturday Night Live comedienne Gilda Radner, and Karen Boyer. He had adopted Schutz’s daughter Katharine in 1967. Radner and Wilder met in 1982 on the set of the Sidney Poitier film Hanky Panky. They married in 1984, and remained together until

she died of ovarian cancer in 1989. The same year, the actor was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Wilder was reportedly devastated by Radner’s death, and acted only sporadically in the years after. Wilder’s memoir Kiss Me Like a Stranger: My Search for Love and Art was published

in 2005. He subsequently wrote several novels, a collection of stories, and a novella. His last acting role was in the 2002-03 season of the sitcom Will and Grace, playing Mr. Stein – a role for which he won an Emmy. He is survived by Boyer, Katharine and Walker-Pearlman.

Bogart Fire Scorches 1,470 acres; 80% Contained

By KMIR News Staff CHERRY VALLEY, Ca. -Firefighters battled a brush fire in Cherry Valley for a third day today and had the blaze 80 percent contained by midmorning. As of Wednesday night, the fire had scorched 1,470 acres and was holding at that acreage through Thursday morning. The Bogart Fire broke out Tuesday near Winesap Avenue and International Park Road on the edge of Bogart Park. The fire, which investigators believe was triggered by youths lighting matches near the entrance of the park, has not been threatening homes in the area as of Tuesday night, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury while on the fire lines Tuesday and was hospitalized but is expected to be fine. Three other people suffered minor injuries. More than 500 fire personnel were working to contain the blaze, with crews from Cal Fire, the San Bernardino County Fire Department, Beaumont, March Air Reserve Base and Morongo Band of Mission Indians assisting the U.S. Forest Service and Riverside County Fire Department. They’ve also been receiving help from Hemet-based air tankers and water-dropping helicopters. At its height, the fire was on the outskirts of the Banning Bench development
