Intimacy Today "Read Slowly and Enjoy!" Luke 12:22-26&32-33; y beloved child, this is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life, whether you have enough food or clothes, for life is more than food, and your body more than clothing. Look at the birds, they don’t plant, harvest, or store food in barns because I feed them. You My beloved, are more valuable to Me than any birds! Will all your worries add even a single moment to your life? If worrying won’t accomplish a little thing like that, what's the use of worrying about bigger things? So don't be afraid, little one. For it gives Me, your Father, Great pleasure to give you the Kingdom! Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasures in heaven! The purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it, and no moth can destroy it. If You Ask Me (And of Course You Won’t), by Betty White

It-girl Betty White delivers a hilarious, slyly profound take on love, life, celebrity, and everything in between. Longtime fans and new fans alike will relish Betty’s candid take on everything from her rumored crush on Robert Redford (true) to her beauty regimen (“I have no idea what color my hair is and I never intend to find out”) to the Facebook campaign that helped persuade her to host Saturday Night Live despite her having declined the hosting job three times already. Featuring all-new material, with a focus on the past fifteen years of her life, If You Ask Me is funny, sweet, and to the point-just like Betty White. Naomi, Wynonna Judd bare complexties in TV series

aomi and Wynonna Judd haven't kept much from their fans about their rocky relationship and tumultuous past. Now the famed country mother-daughter duo is baring even more about their complex relationship in the Oprah Winfrey-produced docu-series, "The Judds as the stars embark on their long-awaited 18-city reunion tour. "After 25 years, the fans are curious to see how much work we've done personally," Wynonna Judd told Canada AM co-host Seamus O'Regan. The docu-series also goes far beyond "showing two Alpha-female performers caught up in all sorts of drama" said the 46-year-old singer. "What you didn't see between us before in all the scenes of us being tough and strong and Number 1 and filling out arenas was the tenderness, the sweetness, the laughter and the joy," said daughter, Wynonna. "I'm really grateful to be able to show all of it, not just the drama…It shows how far we've come in 25 years and that our healing relationship is in the best place it's ever been," she said. "The Judds" also captures the stars in moments that are far from glamorous. That includes seeing 65-year-old mom, Naomi, rolling out of bed in her pajamas with with messy hair and no makeup to feed her dog. "I didn't want to do this (series)," said Naomi Judd. Producers at Winfrey's OWN network first approached the Judds about the TV project. After some deliberation the country music team greenlighted the family's involvement with the series. "I decided to go ahead because on a personal level I've been doing so much good work with my therapy, giving up family secrets from my past. I decided that it was going to hold me accountable and help me continue to do my work," said mother, Naomi. 8

That message of letting go and airing out the past to gain control over one's life was certainly adopted by Ashley Judd in her book, "All Things Bitter and Sweet: A Memoir." In it, the 42-year-old actress revealed that she was sexually abused as a child by several men, including an older man known to the family who forced his tongue into the young girl's mouth. The actress also revealed inappropriate incidences that she was subjected to during her childhood, particularly when her mother and step-father, Larry Strickland, were having sex. As Judd wrote, she was subjected to "a lot of loud sex in a house with thin walls." Judd even slammed the mythic origins of the Judds, and said that the legend did not match her reality. As Judd wrote, "I loved my mother. But at the same time I dreaded the mayhem and uncertainty that followed her everywhere. I often felt like an outsider observing my mom's life as she followed her own dreams." When her mother was asked by O'Regan about her daughter's book, the Judd matriarch grew visibly irritated. "I'm very proud of Ashley's work with AIDS and all that. I love my daughter and I support her, so next question," said mother Naomi, deflecting the issue. "I'm hoping that this show really challenges peoples' assumptions about family in general," Judd added. "I realize that my mother raised me the way that she was raised, which was hideous…She didn't know any better," she said. "After 30 years you can't blame your parents…You have adult, informed eyes. You develop skills. You have to look at things like a detective or a casual observer and say that person wasn't doing that to me personally. They just didn't know any better."

She Said... Women In Their Forties: A Time Of Changes, Challenges and Rewards.

am Dr. Carlos Montes, a local gynecologist transplanted to the High Desert from “down the hill.” In 2004, after spending more than thirty years delivering babies, I transitioned away from obstetrics to concentrate on gynecology. I also pursued training in minimally invasive surgery, as well as cosmetic surgery under the supervision of Dr. Marco Pelosi II, a well-known New Jersey physician. Today I’d like to discuss a topic that comes up with increasing frequency: Women in their forties. Medically, the 4th decade in a woman’s life presents a unique set of challenges including weight gain, worry about unwanted pregnancy (Pregnant? At my age? Impossible!), loss of interest in sex, and irregular menstrual periods ranging from missed ones to, horror of horrors, periods seeming to last forever. Those of us in the medical field specializing in women’s healthcare are in a unique position to guide and supply such patients with information to help alleviate their worries. Many women come to me after unsatisfactory conversations with friends and relatives or unproductive or misleading searches on the internet. My first advice to women who find themselves asking these questions is to make an appointment with a reputable gynecologist. Then, before your appointment, write down all your questions and concerns. Be point specific about your questions with your gynecologist, therefore maximizing your chances of getting correct and specific answers. In my next column, I’ll continue to address the medical issues of women in their forties, focusing on various methods of contraception available to such women. In the meantime, please feel free to send your questions to and we’ll make sure to answer them. Remember: if you want a correct answer, always ask a specific question. Dr. Carlos Montes

Della Reese - High Desert Black History Month Honoree

he incomparable legendary singer/ actress Della Reese, was High the Desert’s Black History Month honoree in February. The celebration was held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hesperia. The event presented magnificent entertainment of music, comedy and beautiful designer African fashions. A highlight of the event was the interview with the accomplished singer/actress, Della Reese as she graciously shared her life’s journey with Desert Rose magazine Editor, Barbara James, while relaxing at her Bel Air home. Reese was selected as this year’s honoree, as she is one of very few artists who has appeared onstage with more than five generations of celebrated performers. “The Next Generation” was the theme for this year's event paying homage to individuals who have inspired and empowered generations from past to present. Della Reese has appeared with such generational icons as Mahalia Jackson, Red Foxx, Eddie Murphy to current generation including actress Raven Simone. As both an accomplished actress and singer of gospel, pop, and blues, Della Reese admits that her first love is singing. She is well known for her clear, powerful voice, distinctive diction, and emotional delivery. Yet television and movie performances have rounded out her varied career in the entertainment business and showcased her talents both as a comedic and dramatic actress. The youngest in a family of six children born to Richard, a factory worker, and Nellie, a cook, she grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where the Baptist church and gospel music were strong early influences. At the age of six, Deloreese Patricia Early began singing in the church's junior choir.

of recording successes for a variety of labels, including ABC- Paramount and AVCO-Embassy. Reese became the first woman to stand in for Johnny Carson when she guest hosted The Tonight Show. In 1969 she made history again, becoming the first black woman to host her own television program, a variety show titled Della, which was nationally syndicated by RKO in 1969 and 1970. Reese appeared on the big screen in the role of Vera in the movie Harlem Nights in 1989, a film which featured a memorable fight scene with Eddie Murphy. She also appeared with Eddie Murphy in his 1992 film The Distinguished Gentleman. Reese credits her success as an actress to her experience as a live singer and nightclub performer. "If you can make people believe your songs of blues and sadness, when you don't feel that way ... well, that takes acting ability I always knew I had," she said. In 1994, Reese accepted the role of the wise angel Tess in the CBS television series Touched By an Angel. The show opened to dismal reviews and was in danger of being cancelled. However, Reese's faith convinced her that the show would ultimately become a success. Her faith in Touched By an Angel was not misplaced. The show caught on with viewers in 1996 and has become a smash hit, finishing each week in the top ten of the Nielsen ratings. Reese's work in Touched By an Angel has led to Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and Emmy Award nominations. She has won Image Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Touched By an Angel both in 1996 and 1998. Della Reese now pastors Understanding Principles for Better Living Church in Los Angeles.

In 1959 Della Reese recorded her biggest hit, "Don't You Know?," for RCA Victor. The success of this single, which was adapted from Italian composer Giacomo Puccini's opera La Boheme, led to nine years of performing in Las Vegas and more than three decades 11
