An eye-catching accent ceiling is nothing new, of course. After all, Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling way back in 1508. We don’t recommend anything quite that elaborate but the ceiling does often seem to be a missed design opportunity. For many, making the most of the fifth wall will mean choosing a paint color. And sure, there are times that experts do recommend the mainstay white. Say, when there is little natural light in the room or you are trying to disguise imperfections in older ceilings. But think beyond white: Light colored ceilings can help give a natural, airy feel to a room. Light blue, for example, may help make a room feel like it is under a beautiful open sky. A light yellow ceiling can make a room feel as though it’s filled with sunshine. Dark colors – think navy blue or dark mocha brown – can actually give a room contrast and make it feel larger than what one might expect. When paired with white walls, a dark ceiling color is a dramatic and beautiful choice. Other new ideas: Wrap the ceiling into one wall by using one dramatic color. The rest of the room can stay white for major impact. Or why not consider wallpaper for the ceiling for a truly unique look? s the air cools and the seasons begin to change, it’s time to head to the farmers’ market for fresh fall produce … think pumpkins, apples, gourds, and colorful mums. These days, you’ll even find vendors offering artisanal breads, organic and free-range meats and dairy products, as well as everything from local honey and homemade salsa to fresh cut flowers and doggy treats. Seems almost every town has a local market these days. Farmers’ markets are indeed gaining in popularity every year, in the U.S. growing from under 2,000 in 1994 to more than 8,600 today, according to the USDA. And that’s a good thing for you and your family as well as for the farmers and vendors themselves. Just how did this trend come to be? The first known farmers’ market in the U.S. took place in 1730 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. From the town’s origins, the planners placed a 120-square-foot lot in the city center to serve as a marketplace for farmers. Boy did that idea catch on! Of course, choosing fresh and local produce is a healthy choice for you and your family. But it’s also beneficial for the farmers and vendors, who are getting a good price for their harvest by cutting out the middleman and selling directly to you, the consumer. Besides, being outdoors and walking around the stalls and tables is not only good exercise, it’s also a fun atmosphere that puts you in touch with your community.

One of the best aspects of a farmers’ market is the access you have to the farmers themselves. You can ask them directly, where is your farm located? Are the crops grown organically? How long ago were these berries picked? Sometimes the farmers will even share recipes for their favorite family dishes. After all, buying asparagus from your local grower is guaranteed to taste fresher and more delicious than ones grown in Peru. An apple from your state will be sweeter than one grown and shipped from down under. You’ll also be eating in season, which is how nature intended it to be. To make the relish, add 2 tbsp oil to large pot and bring to medium high heat. Add sausage and ham then brown for 5 minutes. Add remaining oil, plus onions, celery and bell peppers. Cook for 10 minutes until vegetables are tender. Add garlic and shrimp, cooking for 5 minutes until shrimp is pink. In separate bowl mix chicken stock, corn starch and Worcestershire together then add mixture to pot. Stir well. Bring mixture to a boil and cook for 3 minutes.

Southern shrimp, grilled Jalapeno cheddar grits Tasso ham relish Parsley, chopped

TASSO HAM RELISH 1/4 c Olive oil 2 c Grilled Andouille sausage, chopped 1/4” 1/2 c Tasso ham, minced 2 c Onions, chopped 1/4” 1 c Celery, chopped 1/4” 1 c Red bell pepper, chopped 1/4” 2 tbsp Garlic, minced 1/2 c Chicken stock 1/4 c Worcestershire 1 tbsp Corn starch JALAPENO CHEDDAR GRITS 2 c Heavy cream 2 c Chicken stock 1 c Grits 4 tbsp Butter 4 oz White cheddar

For the grits, add cream and chicken stock in a pot and heat medium high until boiling. Slowly add grits while whisking. Lower heat and cover, whisking every 3-4 minutes to keep grits from sticking. Cook for 20-25 minutes. Remove heat and add cheese a little at a time while whisking until incorporated. Stir in jalapenos. Grill shrimp over high heat until medium-well and light char marks appear. Before removing shrimp from grill, lightly brush with butter. In serving bowl first add grits, then relish and top with 8 grilled southern shrimp. Garnish with chopped parsley.
