Phoenix Fan Fusion Phoenix | May 23-26

ake a stroll down any hip city street these days and you’re sure to spot a new architectural design trend: Cafes, bars, and restaurants are replacing their old windows and French doors with garage door style walls. Proprietors can just roll up the garage doors and the eatery has instant al fresco dining and fresh air to spare. Roll the garage doors down and the dining spot has protection from the elements while still offering up loads of sunlight and a cool modern vibe. This urban trend got architects and savvy homeowners thinking … why couldn’t sleek glass garage door style walls be utilized in living rooms and kitchens, offering up quick ways to get outdoors? After all, there’s no better way to add square footage to your home than to make the outdoor space function as part and parcel of your indoor space. And now you can have this access with the push of a button. What parts of the home are compatible with garage door style walls? Any room or open spaces that face a beautiful outdoor setting. After all, the trendiest of these reimagined doors utilize loads of glass to flood the interior spaces with sunlight. Living rooms, kitchens, even bonus rooms that can function as at-home offices are perfectly suitable for these style doors.

Formerly known as Phoenix Comicon, Fan Fusion is one of the largest pop culture experiences in the country. Hundreds of actors, authors, comic creators along with a variety of exhibitors and celebrity panels will be together under one roof. This is a once a year event you won’t want to miss!

A few things to consider: First and foremost, your climate. If you live in a part of the country that is brutally cold, the insulation needed to make these doors energy efficient isn’t super practical. And if you live in a very hot and humid locale, be forewarned that upon opening, any cooled air will be lost to the outdoors (read: higher cooling bills). Next, consider your style. These doors tend to look best in a modern, industrial or mixed farmhouse style setting. They will also come with some noise and safety trade-offs. (If you have small children, you may not be ready for this change.)

9th Annual Flagstaff Hullabaloo Festival Flagstaff | June 1-2

But if you’re looking to give your home a chic feel, increase the natural light you enjoy, and literally erase the boundaries between your indoor and outdoor living spaces, garage-door style windows may be just what you’re looking for to give your home an instant upgrade. Several style doors exist— traditional doors that roll up and back in sections, tilt doors that are built in one piece, and more urban double-height doors that push up or down into the second-level allowing increased airflow. Talk about cool.

Hullabaloo is a community festival and celebration of summertime and has raised over $96,500 for local non-profits, including Northland Family Help Center, Flagstaff Shelter Services and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff, since 2010. Enjoy the sunshine and vibrant Flagstaff community while jamming out to live entertainment and trying local restaurants.

Yoga in the Rainforest Scottsdale | June 6 Yoga in the Rainforest classes are held at Butterfly Wonderland in the 10,000 SQFT conservatory with approximately 3,000 butterflies flying freely around while you practice. All levels are welcome and proceeds go to the Butterfly Wonderland Foundation.

cocktail in the Alibi lounge which used to house the drunk tank. ( Converted forms of transportation make for interesting lodging, whether by sea or by land. Live out your Titanic fantasies – minus the iceberg – on the Queen Mary luxury liner in Long Beach, CA. ( Or check into a 2-bedroom Boeing 727 that “soars” above the Costa Rican jungle. (CostaVerde. com) If trains are more your speed, you’ll love the luxuriously-appointed, authentic railroad cars of the Aurora Express in Fairbanks, AK. ( Animal lovers will find purr-fect lodging at the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, AR. Enjoy glamping in (safe!) proximity to the big cats and other wild rescues. ( More intrepid travelers may leave their neck of the woods to visit Giraffe Manor in Kenya, a boutique hotel with actual Rothschild’s giraffes peeking in your room to see if you have enough clean towels. ( With so many weird and wonderful places to stay around the world, you may just want to chill. No problem! Just check into the Ice Hotel in Lappland, Sweden where translucent rooms and ice sculptures are recreated each year. ( How cool is that for a memorable vacation?
