hen you think of family businesses, what do you think of? The Heinz family? S.C. Johnson “A Family Company”? The Property Brothers? Chip and Joanna Gaines? No matter what company comes to mind, it’s good to know that if you have your own business, keeping it in the family is not just good common sense but good business sense, too. Growing your family empire is a proven strategy with many successful examples. One of the best parts of passing a business down from one generation to the next is that you can usually trust a family member more than a partner or investor. Love and trust can build a truly unique and stable business dynamic like no other. Legally it is often easier to hand down a company within the family, and with careful planning you may be able to save large amounts on taxes by keeping it in the family. And of course, if you’re passing on a business to a child or starting one with a sibling you can teach your partner all the skills you’ve acquired through the years. In many ways, family businesses just make sense. With family members often spending so much time together anyway, why not use this time together as a business venture? Knowing how your business partner thinks, their values, and what makes them tick is a real advantage in business. Knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses in business is also a lot easier when you’re working with a family member, someone you’ve known your whole life. By taking advantage of your partner’s assets—say communication and marketing of your business—you will be able to achieve much more and more quickly; you’ll also be able to take on the aspects of the business that your partner is not so savvy about, such as book keeping and budgeting perhaps. Of course, it can also be risky to enter into business propositions with family members. Business can be stressful and at times ugly, and if something goes awry financially you could be putting unnecessary stress on a family relationship. The best family business partners are able to let off steam and argue with each other when necessary and then move on as if that argument hadn’t really even happened. Sure sounds like family to us! Just make sure each family member is aware of the risks and the pros and cons of joining forces in the work world.
video vibes Vever before, be it on YouTube, Twitter, or FaceBook. Rather ideo is king. In fact, we watch more videos today than
than reading lengthy stories online, today’s consumers want to watch their news and entertainment. Just look around and you’re sure to see someone glued to a phone watching a how-to video, a vlogger’s latest, or a shoe review on Zappos. According to industry experts, more than 500 million hours of videos are watched on YouTube each day, with more than a billion users logging on. One third of all online activity involves watching videos. And more than half a billion people watch videos on FaceBook every day, too.
IN GOOD TASTE
Those looking to bring streaming video to their living rooms will first want to check out NetFlix, Hulu, Amazon, and other streaming video services. By joining one of these videostreaming companies, you can watch your favorite shows and movies whenever and wherever you want. Certain companies offer live television as well, so you can also catch live news and sporting events, making it even easier to cut the cable cord and opt for a lower monthly bill.
But there’s much more to video streaming than just that. A quick look at YouTube will show you videos for just about everything. Want to learn how to fix an ache in your neck? There’s a video for that. Want to find out when to trim back the bushes in your front yard? There’s a video for that. Want to know where to book your next vacation? Just search for videos of your dream destination, plus get a look at rental properties and restaurants in the area. But consumers don’t only want to watch videos … they also want to produce videos. Just think of the rise of FaceBook Live, which allows people to livestream videos out to a growing audience. It’s easier than ever to start a video stream to grow your own business (and possibly make some big money!) or simply vlog to connect with family and friends. You can even transform personal photos and video clips into professional looking videos by utilizing the expertise of companies such as animoto.com. With just a few clicks and downloads you can make a video of a special trip or party and have a mini-movie ready to be shared with friends and family. Now that’s a video we’d all like to see and share.
