The Tiny House Movement

West Side Story

Phoenix Mercury vs. San Antonio Stars Talking Stick Resort Arena | July 16th PhoenixMercury.com | (602) 252-9622 The Phoenix Mercury is a professional basketball team based in Phoenix, Arizona, playing in the Western Conference in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Dixie Chicks World Tour Ak-Chin Pavilion | July 17th DixieChicks.com/tour Not just “big for a country band” or “big for a big female band,” the Dixie Chicks are a multi-platinum selling act in North America, Europe and Australia. The band — composed of founding members (and sisters) Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Erwin Robison, and lead singer Natalie Maines — is the biggest selling female band of all time in the U.S.

Defining Moments: Fifty Years of Fashion Phoenix Art Museum | April 2 – August 7, 2016 Phxart.org | (602) 257-1222 Featuring more than 50 works drawn from across the history of fashion, this exhibition highlights masterworks and milestones of the permanent collection. Providing insight into how the treasures of the collection were acquired and formed an internationally respected fashion archive, this exhibition will feature a roster of world-class designers including Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Chanel alongside stunning historical works.

Desertscapes: Narrative Landscape Photography by Wayne Norton Pueblo Grande Museum | August 1-31 PuebloGrande.com | (602) 495-0901 Photographer Wayne Norton describes this exhibit of black and white landscape photographs as a portrait of the American desert, through which he wishes “to question Man’s treatment of the desert and our existence there...” He describes his work as formal, graphic compositions and says, “My concerns for the desert are serious but my artistic vision is often symbolic, whimsical, and even ironic.”

elevision shows have popped up on many of the home and garden networks featuring the tiny house movement. One show even facetiously boasts that “tiny houses are the next BIG thing.”

What is Tiny? Tiny houses typically range from 100 to 400 square feet and can be built on a trailer. Homes between 400 square feet and 1,000 square feet are usually referred to as small homes and are built on a foundation. Zoning is a challenge for both tiny and small homes, as many communities require houses to be 1,000 square feet or more. Size limitations for tiny houses are driven by size restrictions for moving the house from Point A to Point B. If you want to be able to pull your house down a highway without a special permit, it must conform to certain size limits. In most U.S. states this maximum size is 13.5-feet tall, 8.5-feet wide, and 40-feet long – 65-feet maximum including the tow vehicle. Since tiny houses are usually constructed with wood and other traditional home building materials, the weight may exceed weights that are towable by a standard pick-up truck. Why go Tiny? The smaller footprint drives down building costs, so the investment in a tiny house may make it more affordable for many people. A tiny house could be a perfect alternative for retirees or for those wanting a vacation home or off-grid escape. If your job requires you to move frequently or work at different locations, moving your tiny house with you may be a solution worth considering. Tiny homes come with much smaller price tags, smaller monthly bills and less maintenance. These homes, including materials and plans, range in cost from less than $20,000 to upward of $50,000. There are some obvious disadvantages to a tiny house - namely lack of space and privacy. A moveable tiny house requires a place to park it. The options include your own land, an RV or trailer park or someone’s backyard. Availability of water, electricity and sewer are also all limitations as to where the tiny house can be parked and be functional for an extended period of time. There is something intriguing about extreme downsizing and tiny houses may be attractive for some. However, tiny or small homes represent a very small part of real estate transactions in the U.S. Sales of tiny homes are just a fraction of a percentage point and the National Association of Realtors barely counts them.

f your summer social calendar is filling up faster than you can say soiree, you’re probably fretting over what to wear. And with social media abuzz with pics from every event, you don’t want to show up in feed after feed wearing the same dress twice. Why do men have it so easy, renting or wearing the same formal wear over and over? If this ladies’ lament sounds familiar, have we got a solution for you! Rather than buying a fancy and pricey dress or suit to wear to each and every occasion — only to have it hang in your closet never to be worn again — why not rent your next party look? That’s right … just like the men do at places like Men’s Wearhouse. That’s the idea behind Rent The Runway, a revolutionary wardrobe solution for busy women who always want to look their best, without breaking the bank. After all, the world’s hottest celebrities have been borrowing gowns, outfits, and fab accessories for years, so why not you?

Of course, the best part? The low rental fee. A few recent examples: A white Badgley Mischka sheath dress that retails for $395 is available to rent for $65. A Monique Lhuillier navy lace gown that retails for $798 rents for $70. There are even prom dresses for rent, which is truly a brilliant idea, as we all know those will never be worn again. All you have to do is enter in your zip code, the dates you need the gown, and your size. If you choose a second backup size, the company will send it to you for free. Also available to rent are separates and a range of accessories. Sounds too good to be true? It is, really. All we can say, ladies, is it’s about time!

Here’s how it works: Just log onto www.RentTheRunway.com, choose the type of event you’re attending (wedding, blacktie, bache-lorette party, professional event, and many other
