TRAVEL TIME Juneau, Alaska

ABOUT JUNEAU Downtown Juneau sits snugly between Mount Juneau, Mount Roberts and Gastineau Channel, and is a maze of narrow streets running past a mix of new structures, old storefronts and quaint houses featuring early 19th century architecture left over from the town’s early gold mining days. The waterfront bustles with cruise ships, fishing boats and floatplanes zipping in and out. With no road access to Juneau, it is the only state capital in the United States that can only be reached by airplane or boat. Juneau also offers access to some of the region’s top attractions, including Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness Area and Admiralty Island National Monument. Ditching Outdated DOORS

TAKING YOUR WORKOUT OUTDOORS HIKING

Are you the type that just miserably counts down the minutes until your workout is over? Hiking may be just the diversion that makes you even forget you’re exercising. The sights, sounds and smells of nature are enough to get many people hooked for a lifetime. Plus, hiking tends to lend itself as a social sport—bring your family, your buddies, even your pooch. You’ll find that hiking develops great thigh, calf and bun muscles. CYCLING / MOUNTAIN BIKING You can take this workout to the streets or to the trails. A road bike is great for speed and many find it a terrific way to kill two birds with one stone. Run quick errands or simply have a fun destination in mind (think juice bar!) and let your legs propel you there. On the other hand, hitting the trails with your mountain bike might combine your need for awesome scenery with your desire to mix it up. Between easy wide trails and tricky single-tracks, your bike can take you places you may never get to by hiking. Biking is an excellent cardio workout but with minimal strain on your joints.

ave you ever walked into a home and immediately thought to yourself how dated it looked? There are many ways to add pizzazz to your home and bring it back to modern times. Some improvements can be costly such as pricey flooring, countertops, and kitchen cabinetry. Those expensive projects aside, doesn’t every homeowner want to add the biggest impact with minimal financial outlay? One of the best ways to change the look and character of your entire home is by replacing the interior doors. Homeowners can dramatically improve the appearance and increase the value of their home, hassle-free and relatively inexpensively. Many people want to update their existing home and enjoy living with the improvement, while some are preparing their home for sale. Still others may be investors or have purchased a fixer-upper and need to replace doors as just one of many improvements to be made. Outdated doors can affect the look of the whole house. Flat, hollow-core doors feel cheap and flimsy. The fake wood-grain look is also well beyond its glory days. With home values increasing like they have, cheap-looking doors just don’t cut it in a higher priced home. When it’s time to list the home, a smart seller will take steps to make their home stand out among all the others in the neighborhood. Improvements such as replacing the interior doors will increase the value of the home, and just as importantly, help it sell faster among its competition. Glass doors are becoming very popular now, particularly in more modern, contemporary settings. Some homeowners close off an open archway with lovely French doors to create a semiprivate space perfect for an office or sitting room. Outdated closet doors can be converted as well. Bi-fold doors may be changed to sliding by-pass doors, or even swing doors. Mirrored doors can be replaced with classic wood. Even cumbersome pocket doors can be replaced with a barn door. Just choose the style of door, paint or stain color and hardware. Installers will use your existing door jams and casings so there is no need to change or modify what you already have. The doors are then custom sized, painted or stained and finished with hardware right at the factory. Expect to be without your doors for three to four days or so. Not too bad considering the huge difference it can make in the function and aesthetics of the home!

ttention all gym rats and treadmill junkies! With weather about to hit those long-awaited magical fall moments, now is the time to head outside with your workout. Try something new or revamp an old favorite. Whatever the case, studies show that exercising outdoors can not only help you burn more calories, it can do wonders for your mental state too. Thanks to wind, varied terrain, temperature variances and the constant challenge of inclines, declines and obstacles, you can expect to burn about 5% more calories and increase your agility by taking your usual routine outdoors. Plus, a study found that exercising en plein air drastically improves your mood, feelings of confidence and self-esteem.

YOGA Sometimes your yoga studio gets too familiar. Same old people next to you in class, same old scrambling for your preferred spot, etc. By taking your yoga discipline outside, you can really experience yoga as it was intended. “Being outdoors gives you access to a whole other world of sensations. It helps you feel part of a boundless existence, at one with an intelligent and sympathetic universe,” says Garrett Sarley Dinabandhu, president of the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in the Berkshire Mountains. Imagine digging your bare feet into the cool grass while a bird floats lazily by. Ahh… true peace and tranquility.
