COD Men’s Golf opened up the 2018 season with a new head coach, Roadrunners coaching veteran Ken Simonds. As of the writing of this article the Roadrunners have played in two tournaments finishing 4th in their opening tourney, The Point Conception Open in Lompoc and 3rd in the annual Orange Empire Classic held at Los Serranos C.C. The Point Conception Open really brought out the heavy hitters, as the top three finishers from the 2017 CCCAA State Finals were represented, the defending state champs, the College of the Canyons Cougars from Santa Clarita, followed by the 2017 runner-up Cypress Chargers and then the third place Ventura Pirates, along with six Western State Conference teams. The Roadrunners were joined by two other Pacific Coast Athletic Conference teams at this event. The Orange Empire Classic had a great field of teams as well as the 2017 CCCAA State Finals runner-up Cypress Chargers, along with the entire Orange Empire and most of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference competed. Desert would finish with 375 points, just 7 strokes back of second place finisher, Orange Coast. To follow the Roadrunners golf team just go to codathletics.com and go to mens sports - golf.

Chipping Away At High Scores Now, the longer hitters were hitting three and four irons into the green and missing more greens. Because they were normally not missing greens, they were unaccustomed to relying on their short games to save their pars. So suprisingly enough I did well in comparison to the other players, and actually I was just playing my normal game. Today the tours are so competitive that everyone has to have a good short game to compete.
Short game expertise can take many shots off your score. People sometimes say, “ I just don’t have enough distance”, “I can’t reach the greens in regulation.” This is especially true for the ladies, and seniors. We do not have the strength that men have and we lose strength as we age. It is just a fact of nature, but nothing that should cause us not to be good golfers. I remember when I was in my first year on the LPGA Tour. It was a good year for me as I earned the Rookie of the Year Award. I am not a very big lady, probably about 5’5” and weigh about 120 pounds, but could I chip and putt. It was not by accident that I had a good short game. It was hours and hours of practice. We had a big tournament coming up in the Catskills Mountains of New York. The course was the well known Concord Resort, one of the longest courses we would play that year. My drives were about 210-220 yards and I was concerned about this event. Golly, the long hitters would have a distinct advantage. Suprisingly enough the length of the course helped me. Many of the long hitters had become accustomed to hitting five irons and less into the greens and they would be on in regulation. On the other hand on the long par fours, I could be hitting a five wood into the green and maybe missing the green, but I would chip up one putt, and continue on.
Here are a few pointers about chipping. It is a low running shot, usually closer to the green, the ball is played back of center in the stance, the hands move forward a several inches, and the weight is to the forward foot. The stroke is an arm stroke with quiet wrists, stroke is equal distance back and through, with a brushing of the grass. It is a finesse shot so don’t be gripping the club tightly. Learning to use different clubs to chip with is an advantage. Chips that require lots of roll to get to the hole would need a less lofted club, while those you don’t want to roll far would do better with a more lofted club. Above all, put your time in practicing, you will see those scores start to go down. By Sharron Moran LPGA Class “A” Golf Instructor at the College of the Desert Driving Range Available for lessons.
