The top 5 Best Travel Apps Whether you’re hitting the road or taking to the skies this travel season, you could do with a digital companion to help you plan your itinerary, make sure your tickets and connections are all lined up, and that you have plenty of time to do everything you want (or need) to do while you’re traveling. In this volume, we are having a look at the top 5 best travel apps.

1. SKYSCANNER While flight-booking apps are fairly plentiful on other mobile platforms, Windows Phone marketplace boasts a meagre handful. Thankfully, this clean-looking solution does everything you’d ever need it to, aggregating fares from airlines and the big travel sites to bag you the best deal. For those really keeping an eye on the purse-strings, there’s also the option to pin your search to your start screen and keep an eye on price fluctuations.

2. TRIPADVISOR About to make a late booking for your summer holiday, or just looking for somewhere to say on a weekend away? No matter what you holiday plans are, Trip Advisor places a wealth of information on the quality of hotels, restaurants and attractions at your fingertips.

3. HOTEL PAL While we’d always recommend securing a hotel at your destination before you travel, it’s understandable that sometimes sorting those details out once you arrive just can’t done. Created with these scenarios in mind, HotelPal uses the iPhone’s GPS functionality to show all the hotels around you. Going further, it also allows users to view rates after inputting their desired length of stay, see pictures of the hotel in question and view a compatible list of the hotel amenities. In other words, it’s a great way to avoid endless drives searching for vacancy signs.

4. SKYPE This app is a miracle of international communication, eliminating any need for a hotel-room phone. As long as you’re connected by Wi-Fi (and not by a data network such as 3G), you’ll get free phone calls to any Skype user in the world. And since calls to landlines are a mere 2 cents a minute, you won’t need to shell out for an international call to a helpline if your laptop hiccups or your airline bungles your reservation.

5. XE CURRENCY Unless your name is Thomas Crown and you’re prepared for international travel at a moment’s notice, chances are you’ll need to exchange some money in order to get by. XE Currency is a useful tool for converting money from all over the world, helping users to better understand just how much cash they should expect to receive in the event of an exchange (before fees). Since it makes use of the iPhone’s internet connection, exchange rates throughout the app are also updated as new information becomes available, insuring your exchange calculations stay up to date with the changes in the international currency markets.
