Tipperary student named a winner at first ever Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards Enya O’Connell-Hussey from Presentation Secondary School Thurles has been named the winner of the Senior Secondary Schools Category at the Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards. This is the first year of the awards which have been set up by Bord Gáis Energy to encourage and reward participation in drama among school children across Ireland. The awards were presented by writer and actress Amy Huberman at a ceremony at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on Wednesday 9th April.

‘Hair Raising Funds’ for The Irish Cancer Society! Last week the Hairdressing Salon at Templemore College of Further Education was a hive of activity as students and teachers revamped the hairs of members of the Roscrea Community Employment Scheme. These brave volunteers (pictured below) offered their precious heads to the shave or dye challenge all in aid of a worthwhile fundraiser for The Irish Cancer Society. The students and staff at Templemore College were delighted when Paddy Reidy – CE Supervisor approached the college and asked for
their help with shaving, dying and transforming over twenty of his members heads for this worthwhile cause. Jumpstart – vintage VW Meet in Loughmore Originally organised a number of years ago by Newport resident Cathal O’Toole as nothing more than a casual meeting of like minded vintage VW enthusiasts from a vintage VW club called Eircooled.com, Jumpstart, as it is now known has grown into quite the event. Spurred on by the success of the 2013 event the decision was made to step it up so to speak and the car park previously used in Limerick was not going to cut it anymore. As Cathal says the decision to move to Loughmore was a simple one; “I have friends living in and close to Loughmore so I had seen how picturesque the village is, I’ve experienced the high quality food served in The Cottage and the support the locals put into everything held in their village so it was simple really”. The decision was made all that much easier when Thurles based CM Signs offered to sponsor the event. For those that don’t know CM Signs, it is owned by VW nuts Brian Maher and Graham Cullen so for them, this partnership made perfect sense. With the confirmation of the event only happening at the end of January, the pressure was on to get everything in place. Prizes were sourced for the goodie bags which were given out to those that arrived early on the day. It
should be noted that there was no entry fee for this event, it was 100% free so with the value of each goodie bag ranging from € 10 to €40 depending on their content this makes this event one of the most unique out there. Added to the impressive list of ‘goodies’ were the prizes on offer for various classes. Owners drove away with a staggering €1,000 worth of prizes which included magazine subscriptions, vouchers for VW specialists, car accessories and car parts while the Car of the Show winner received a gorgeous hand crafted wood and metal trophy. Harvey’s VW Dealers brought out a New Beetle to go on display alongside its vintage brethren. Kilkenny native Kevin Reade, himself a VW enthusiast and member of www.Eircooled.com , was DJ for the day. Kevin’s 1970’s ex-RTE VW van now boasts a full array of DJ equipment so was perfect for the day.

New Programme Seeks Projects with Social and Environmental Impacts in Ireland Celestial Green Ventures, an environmental conservation company based in Ireland, is pleased to announce the launch of their Social Funding Programme, aimed at helping small projects and start-ups all over the Republic of Ireland make a difference in their communities. Although their primary concern is the protection of the Amazon and sustainable development for the local communities there, the work carried out by Celestial Green Ventures in Brazil has served to reinforce the importance of local programmes in tackling major issues. It is for this reason that they have decided to offer financial support to 4 separate projects, to the tune of €5,000 each. All charities, not-for-profit, and community based organisations that are registered in the Republic of Ireland are eligible to apply for funding through the programme. Given their corporate objectives, they are particularly interested in assisting projects that have a strong social & environmental purpose, although applications are welcomed from all project types. Ultimately however, the programme is looking for creative, talented, and driven individuals with an innovative & unique solution to problems faced by people or communities in Ireland.

‘Culture & Chips’ Food Carnival June Bank Holiday 2014 Limerick City Centre LIMERICK City is cooking up something special for the June Bank Holiday weekend as part of Limerick National City of Culture 2014. ‘Culture & Chips’ is a food carnival taking place in the city centre in a specially transported 1920’s Spiegeltent.
Frites, chips, potato wedges or French fries – whatever you call them, there is little to rival the mighty chip. Humble in stature, there are few foods that hold such affection in the hearts (well, bellies) of so many. Curly or thick-cut, wedged or crinkled, made traditionally from potatoes but so often from many other vegetables now too, it is high time we celebrate the chip… Limerick City has decided to do just that, and has announced details of the Culture & Chips food carnival taking place over the June Bank Holiday weekend. An authentic specially transported 1920’s Spiegeltent will be erected in Arthur’s Quay Park for the duration of what promises to be one of the best weekends of the year. Saturday afternoon May 31st sees the World Chip Championships taking place to find the best-tasting chip on the planet. This will be an open contest to all cooks with a passion for the frite, each hoping to cut the mustard and take home the inaugural title. Borrisoleigh girl reaches All-Ireland final of TeenStars singing contest 17 year old Clóda Scanlon, who is a 5th year student in St Joseph’s College Borrisoleigh, is the only Tipperary contestant to reach the All-Ireland beating over 1,000 contestants to reach the final. TeenStars, sponsored by the Irish Daily Star, are giving a cash prize of €5,000 to the contestant who comes in 1st place. Also up for grabs is a recording studio prize for 2nd place and cash prizes for 3rd, 4th and 5th places. Plus the top 10 All Ireland finalists will get the chance to record a charity cd with the teenstars judges, with all proceeds going to the winning contestant’s chosen charity.

Featuring banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, vocals and percussion, We Banjo 3 make a bold and extraordinary musical statement. Collectively, We Banjo 3 has been at the forefront of Irish banjo and fiddle for two decades. Martin was the very first Irish banjo player to perform at the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville and David is fast building a reputation for his deep, muscular singing.
On Saturday night 6th April, the rain subsided for a unique event where 38 brave adrenaline seekers walked bare foot over 20 feet of hot coals. Friends and family and supporters were there cheering them on to achieve the impossible and walk on fire. To say that the atmosphere at the Abbey Court Hotel was ‘fiery’ is a complete understatement. The car park which was literally on fire, was the chosen venue for the North Tipperary Hospice Movement’s Fire Walk Fundraiser “Firing It Up In North Tipperary Anything Is Possible”! Master Firewalker Brian Moore of Peak Potential conducted a two hour seminar to all 38 participants prior to the walk in order get them in the ‘mind over matter’ way of thinking channelling their energy and overcoming their fears. Outside, Drum Dance Ireland were playing bongos and drums to entertain supporters

Saturday 26 April, 8pm Tipperary. Music by the infamous DJ Tickets €16/12 concession Tracy Edwards, all cocktails 5e all 0504 90204 night. whilst the fire was burning, creating an electric atmosphere before the brave firewalkers came out. At 9.30 the Firewalkers came out charged up and ready to go, one by one the volunteers daringly walked across the burning coals. Mid-way through, the coals were topped up before non-other than ‘Feet of Flames’ Irish dancing star Bernadette Flynn walked across! Chief Fire Officer Dave Carroll was the final walker of the night; he thankfully didn’t need to call on his Firefighter colleagues to quench his feet! The North Tipperary Hospice Movement is delighted that their Firewalk event has so far raised almost €8000, which was pledged in sponsorship on the night. The event has been hailed a great success by the Kay O Donoghue of the North Tipperary Hospice.

Counselling Anxiety

By Jim O’Shea Martha Davis has an excellent beliefs inventory outlining 50 irrational ideas that are connected to negative self-talk. You have to score on each of these under the headings one. 1. Somewhat agree. 2. Agree. 3. Disagree. Some of the irrational ideas she lists are ‘it is important to me that others approve of me’, ‘I hate to fail at anything’, ‘when I don’t get what I want, I get mad’, ‘I find it hard to go against what others think’, ‘it upsets me a lot when I make mistakes’, I worry a lot about what people think about me’. Martha then takes each of these 50 irrational ideas and tests them for their validity. She offers a realistic appraisal of some of these. To carry such irrational thoughts is a great burden and will spoil your happiness. I would recommend that you borrow this book and photocopy this inventory. It will give you a very accurate idea of your negative beliefs. Chapter 3 of Bourne’s workbook gives an overview of a recovery approach, exploring the physical, emotional, behavioural, mental, interpersonal, whole self, and existential-spiritual aspects. Many of these are explored in these articles, but the book is more comprehensive. Like Martha Davis’s book, it also outlines relaxation techniques. We are motivated to practise these techniques because he shows with clarity how beneficial they are in reducing anxiety. These exercises, for example, result is a decrease in our heart and breathing rate, lowers our blood pressure, reduces our body tension and oxygen consumption, slows our rumination, and increases our alpha wave activity in our brain. Alpha Brain Waves are a sign of relaxed activity in your brain. Alpha brainwaves are defined as between the frequency 8 Hz – 12 Hz, and are the dominant brain wave activity when your body and mind are relaxed. If you have ever felt relaxed after meditation or yoga, you have experienced alpha brain waves. The more stressful beta brain waves are the opposite of alpha brain activity. Series 4, no. 20. Anxiety. Appropriate intimate relationships lessen anxiety. The inner child and the emotional re-experiencing of childhood. In the context of anxiety, Bourne has an interesting section on support in our intimate relationships, which helps to fight anxiety. He looks at 10 facets of an intimate relationship, which are interesting. These range from having common interests to common values, such as friendships, education, religion, finances, sex health and so on. He stresses the need for a sense of romance in the relationship and the ability to keep this alive throughout the years. There must also be compatibility between relative needs for being together and having one’s own space. If there is a mismatch between these, the relationship will not meet individual needs. In other words if one partner needs a lot of individual space and the other needs a lot of togetherness, the result will be disharmony and intimacy is damaged. This will add to stress levels, especially in the partner who values togetherness. An intimate relationship also involves support for each other’s growth, and willingness by both to nurture and support each other in growing and changing. This involves a high level of selfesteem, tolerance, and the absence of a sense of control. Love is in the eye of the beholder, the saying goes. So in the initial stages of a relationship
partners tend to idealise each other. As the relationship progresses their individual imperfections and shortcomings begin to be recognised. Intimacy involves accepting and tolerating these flaws and imperfections. This more realistic view should be accompanied by affection, warmth and friendliness expressed in words and behaviours such as hugging and cuddling, and sharing of feelings. The ability to share feelings (being vulnerable) is a key ingredient to a good intimate relationship and involves good communication, whereby partners listen to each other, hear what is being said and are empathic to each other. All of these characteristics of a good intimate relationship should be cemented by strong mutual trust, which is built up over time. I have great respect for the anxiety-busting techniques mentioned throughout this series, but my overall conclusion is that an emotional re-experiencing of childhood stuff has a more lasting effect than any other. That is a big statement, and one likely to be challenged. Yet, again and again I have seen self-esteem grow and fears and anxieties vanish when a sufferer is able to travel the emotional road. This is not always easy, because it involves touching the inner child, and not everyone can do it. Some do not even understand what it means. But, it is extremely beneficial and healing to bring out and recognise our inner child, who may be an angry child, a lost child, a lonely child, a happy child, a hurt child, a shamed child, and so on. We then become the loving inner parent, not the critical one or the protective one. Some people suffering from anxiety never reach that stage, and people whose feelings are frozen cannot even understand the concept of the inner child. I find working on the inner child to be the most fruitful way of dissipating anxiety. The inner child represents our emotions, and by seeing and loving the inner child we can release our emotions, and break the protective shell that we have built as children. Freezing our emotions and creating the shell may have been necessary to protect ourselves in an abusive environment as children. However, when we grow to adulthood it is counterproductive. It is easy to see how freezing our feelings and building this shell can foster anxiety. Our tears are a symbol of our feelings, and when we weep for the inner child, our tears melt the ice and the shell and we become whole and anxiety free. (Continued in next issue)
