Asking prices for residential property around the country fell by almost 5% in the final quarter of 2010, according to the latest report published by property website Daft.ie. This means that the total fall during the year was 14%.

By the end of 2010, the national average asking price had fallen by 40% from the peak in 2007 and stood at just below €220,000. The typical time it takes to sell a property remains high but has fallen from 41 weeks to 36 weeks over the course of the year.

During 2010, asking prices in Dublin fell 14% on average, compared to a fall of 15% outside major cities. Prices in Galway were 13% lower than a year before, after prices fell sharply in the final 3 months of the year. In Cork, Limerick and Waterford, prices fell by between 10% and 12% over the course of the year. Elsewhere, the extent of price falls varied from less than 10% in Mayo to 20% or more in Wexford and Kilkenny.

Tipperary & Munster In Munster, asking prices fell by an average of 5.1% in the final three months of the year, slightly larger than the fall of 4.1% seen between June and September. The average asking price in Tipperary in the final quarter of 2010 was €189,000, a fall of €93,000 from the peak.

"Nonetheless, not all parts of the country are adjusting at the same pace," Lyons continued. "Parts of Dublin have seen price falls of up to 50% from the peak, and we are seeing a steady fall in the total number of properties for sale in the capital.

Some counties however, have seen price falls of just 30% and the number of properties for sale remains very high. It is the cities and in particular Dublin that are most likely to stabilise first, and it remains to be see if this happens in 2011."

2010 marks the fourth year of correction in Ireland's property market, with a fall of 14% compared to a fall of 20% in 2009. Ronan Lyons, economist with Daft.ie, said: "Despite another year of price falls, the market does not yet look in balance. On the supply side, the number of properties for sale remains very high, at close to 60,000, while on the demand side, a range of factors continue to weigh on prospective buyers, including tight credit and expectations of higher taxes and interest rates in coming years."

Ogra FF Campaign for All-Ireland Presidency Following the successful end of two policy campaigns last year North Tipperary Ogra Fianna Fail have announced plans at their recent monthly meeting to campaign for an ‘All-Ireland Presidency’. As well as being a strong force in the Local and European Elections last year and the overwhelming passing of the Lisbon Referendum and getting a former Chair elected to their National Youth Committee, the Ogra also successfully campaigned to elect a member of Ogra Fianna Fail in a Seanad Eireann bye-election and end electronic voting with their ‘Save the Tallyman’ campaign.

This year the North Tipperary branch of the youth wing of the Republican party will be campaigning to have a referendum on general election day to amend Article 12.2.2 of the Constitution to extend the franchise in presidential elections to citizens in Northern Ireland. This will allow for an All-Ireland Presidential election campaign in November.

“Such a Presidency would help to end the drift within Northern nationalism, anchoring Northern nationalists to the Southern constitutional order, and to re-enforcing the dominant position of the constitutional tradition within republicanism in the face of persisting paramilitarism. Finally, it would prevent a culture of dissociation and aloofness towards the six counties from and gaining a stranglehold over Southern politics.

Chairperson Colm Reddan argued “All Irish citizens, North and South, deserve the legal right to elect the President of Ireland. A year after President McAleese went to the Phoenix Park, all the people of Ireland in the first act of All-Ireland self determination since the First Dail Elections in 1918 - those who were Irish citizens and those who chose not to be – voted overwhelmingly for the Belfast Agreement.

“That document recognises “the birthright of all the people of Northern Ireland to identify themselves and be accepted as Irish or British, or both, as they may so choose, and accordingly confirm that their right to hold both British and Irish citizenship is accepted by both governments”. Within a decade of that 1998 agreement, 402,658 residents of Northern Ireland had been issued with new Irish passports, according to official figures.

“The McAleese Presidency of ‘building bridges’ has magnificently demonstrated how the office of President can be used as a means of uniting people on this island. We must now build upon both the McAleese legacy and the established principles of the Good Friday Agreement, which include respect for identities North and South, to create a permanent agent for conciliation within our constitution.

Thurles Ogra Youth Officer Arthur Griffin further explained “Ogra proposes extending the franchise in Presidential elections from those eligible to vote in Dail elections to all Irish citizens. If taken, this further move would fortify the commitment of constitutional republicans to the principles of mutual respect underpinning our peace agreements and demonstrate their sincerity in an incontrovertible way.

“Our policy proposes extending the Presidential franchise to Irish citizens living overseas, recognising the immense social, cultural, and economic value of the diaspora and its role in the life of the nation.”

Secretary Gerard Fogarty added that “the current crisis in Ireland and Northern Ireland demonstrates the requirement to reshape and renew the republic. Not since Brian Boru has there been a leader for all the people of Ireland.

John B. Play To Be Staged in Rathcabbin By: Rose Mannion The much acclaimed Rathcabbin Players will bring the John B. Keane classic ‘The Year Of The Hiker’ to theatre lovers from January 20th. to 23rd. incl and from 28th. to 30th. January incl.

Written in 1964, the play deals with yearning, loss and regret and tells the peculiar story of a man nicknamed The Hiker (Pat Kennedy) who returns home looking for forgiveness from the family he walked out on 20 years previously.

In the opening scene his son Simey (Tagdh Nevin) is being urged by no-nonsense aunt Freda (Pauline Walsh) to get ready for his sister Mary’s (Caoimhe Kennedy) wedding. The family’s thoughts slip involuntarily back to the Hiker’s absence and his wife Kate (Sarah King) laments that Joe (Des Clancy) should not have to be giving his sister away.

Simon, who was only a baby when his dad left, got the chances Joe lost out on – education and the potential to marry. Yet he takes it all for granted and does not appreciate the sacrifices which were made. When The Hiker does eventually show up he sniffs out his selfishness and the weakness of his character straight away. Does he see traces of his earlier self in Simon? The Hiker’s

departure rocked the family and it was not just the embarrassment and anger that left such a mark.

Towards the end of the play The Hiker points out the close proximity of love and hate. The people who know him – Freda, Kate and Joe – loved him once, so why did he leave?

The late playwrite crafted his characters well and once said that this was his best piece of writing.

This is a beautiful play, with the gags and humor failing to mask the sense of hurt and futile loss of lives not fully lived. The themes of unreliable memory and the limitations of character feature. If only people could control how they acted – not let pride, shyness, cruel flippancy and jealousy guide them.

Anne Moloney who is new to Rathcabbin Players this year, will direct this impressive production which the audience is sure to enjoy.

For the first time this year, Rathcabbin Players will have a brother, sister and daughter on stage, namely the Kennedy’s. Pat who plays the part of the Hiker is no stranger to Rathcabbin patrons having first appeared back in 1985. Caoimhe, his daughter has also made a name for herself with Rathcabbin Players and now after a break which has been far too long, Pat’s sister Sarah makes a welcome appearance in the part of the hikers long suffering wife.

Winter Birds The Blackbird The male is all black except for a yellow eye-ring and bill and has a rich melodious song; the adult female and juvenile have mainly dark brown plumage. This species breeds in woods and gardens, building a neat, mudlined, cup-shaped nest. It is omnivorous, eating a wide range of insects, earthworms, berries, and fruits. Small vertebrates such as frogs, tadpoles and lizards are occasionally hunted.

Both sexes are territorial on the breeding grounds, with distinctive threat displays, but are more gregarious during migration and in wintering areas.

Pairs will stay in their territory throughout the year where the climate is sufficiently temperate.

Common over most of its range in woodland, the Common Blackbird has a preference for deciduous trees with dense undergrowth. However, gardens provide the best breeding habitat.

Ernest Shackleton was born in Kilkea near Athy, Co. Kildare. He left school and went to sea at the age of 16. He finally started explorations to the Antarctic and on the 19th January 1915 his ship the Endurance was frozen fast in an ice floe. After the ship was crushed, Shackleton achieved the incredible feat of sailing all his crew in lifeboats to Elephant island. He then sailed with five companions including Tom Crean to the whaling station in South Georgia. A ship was then sent to rescue the remaining crew on Elephant Island. No one crew member died. His brother, Francis Shackleton, is generally believed to have stolen the Irish Crown Jewels in 1907.

Need A Bad Day to Get Into Heaven It got crowded in heaven so, for one day and one day only, it was decided to only accept people who had a really bad day on the day they died.

St. Peter was standing at the pearly gates and said to the first man, "Tell me about the day you died." The man said, "Oh, it was awful. I was sure my wife was having an affair, so I came home early to catch her with him. I searched all over the apartment but couldn't find him anywhere. So I went out onto the balcony, we live on the 25th floor, and found this man hanging over the edge by his fingertips. I went inside, got a hammer, and started hitting his hands. He fell, but landed in some bushes. So, I got the refrigerator and pushed it over the balcony and it crushed him. The strain of the act gave me a heart attack, of which I died from."

St. Peter couldn't deny that this was a pretty bad day, and since it was a crime of passion, he let the man in.

He then asked the next man in line about the day he died. "Well, sir, it was awful," said the second man. "I was doing aerobics on the balcony of my 26th floor apartment when I twisted my ankle and slipped over the edge. I managed to grab the balcony of the apartment below, but some maniac came out and started pounding on my fingers with a hammer. Luckily I landed in some bushes. But, then the guy dropped a refrigerator on me!"

Counselling Counselling men who batter, and steps that all abusers can take to stop abusing Counsellors should be aware that their abusive client distrusts others, and that includes the counsellor, even if the client has voluntarily come for counselling. Counsellors should never allow an abusive client to minimise abuse. Abusers will make every effort to get the counsellor on their side by minimising, denying and blaming the victim. The counsellor must challenge all of these. Many abusers are persuasive, logical, and charming, and portray themselves as individuals who need the understanding of the counsellor, and want the counsellor to take them at face value.

This is difficult for the counsellor, who is trying to stand in the shoes of the client; and it is hard to be aware and somewhat suspicious and yet be truly empathic. But, it can be done, because part of counselling is being real in a supportive relationship.

Thus forming a good relationship is fundamental, and it allows the counsellor to make strong challenges without frightening the client away.

The counsellor must also be aware that batterers often feel that they are victims, and portray themselves in this light. Historically, men who battered were protected by the tradition of privacy and the sanctity of marriage and the family. They would consider being prosecuted as an invasion of their privacy. The more that the counsellor educates them the greater the chance that they will embark on the road to change.

Sometimes batterers are addicted to alcohol or drugs and they use this as an excuse for their abuse. Counsellors should be aware that addictions are not the root causes of abuse, and should challenge any excuse put forward by an abusive client. A challenge is a way of getting the client to think, it is a way of helping them to educate themselves. If, however, they are addicts they may return more deeply into drink and drugs if the pain they are experiencing in therapy becomes too unbearable. It is important for alcoholics and drugs addicts to attend an addiction counsellor as well as a general counsellor for the abusive behaviours. I am not an addiction counsellor and I do not counsel addicts until they have been off drink or drugs for about two years, lest the pain they will experience in general counselling drive them back into using substances to dull the pain.

As a counsellor you can expect the abuser to continue denying his behaviour and blaming his partner.

Even if a person voluntarily attends counselling he will continue to minimise his actions, possibly for some months, and will try to control what happens in the counselling sessions.

After all, control is the basis of all abuse. Some abusive clients often use anger, which they portray as justifiable anger, accusing their partners of being crazy, and giving many examples of the wrongs they have committed. The counsellor will always have sympathy with his client, and there is a danger that they will allow the exploration to focus on the abuser’s partner. If the abuser manages to shift the blame onto his partner, then the counselling is failing. So keep the focus on the abuser, and educate him on what abuse is and what it does.

The abuser may also take to opposite road to anger, and be placating, and suggest couple counselling. In that case the counsellor might assume a judgemental attitude and the victim may find herself having to prove that she has been abused. It’s rather tricky!
