One day, Adam sat outside the Garden of Eden shortly after eating the apple, and wondered about men and women. So looking up to the heavens he said, "Excuse me God, can I ask you a few questions?" God replied, "Go on Adam but be quick. I have a world to create." So Adam says, "When you created Eve, why did you make her body so curved and tender unlike mine?" "I did that, Adam, so that you could love her." "Oh, well then, why did you give her long, shiny, beautiful hair, and not me?" "I did that Adam so that you could love her." "Oh, well then, why did you make her so stupid? Certainly not so that I could love her?" "Well, Adam no. I did that so that she could love you."

"What's the difference between a tax auditor and a rottweiler? A rottweiler eventually lets go." - anonymous Juror: "Yes, but I don't want them to know that."
A Brit, a Frenchman and a Russian are viewing a painting of Adam and Eve frolicking in the Garden of Eden. "Look at their reserve, their calm," muses the Brit. "They must be British." "Nonsense," the Frenchman disagrees. "They're naked, and so beautiful. Clearly, they are French." "No clothes, no shelter," the Russian points out, "they have only an apple to eat, and they're told that they are living in Paradise. They have to be Russian".
Patient: It isn't possible that I'm as overweight as you say I am. Doctor: Maybe you would prefer to look at it in a different way. According to this chart, you're about 10 inches too short. John invited his mother over for dinner. During the meal, his mother couldn't help noticing how beautiful John's housemate was. She had long
been suspicious of a relationship between John and his housemate, and this only made her more curious. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between them than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts, John volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Julie and I are just housemate." About a week later, Julie came to John and said, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the beautiful silver gravy ladle. You don't suppose she took it, do you?" John said, "Well, I doubt it, but I'll write her a letter just to be sure." So he sat down and wrote: "Dear Mother, I'm not saying you 'did' take a gravy ladle from my house, and I'm not saying you 'did not' take a gravy ladle. But the fact remains that one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner." Several days later, John received a letter from his mother which read: "Dear Son, I'm not saying that you 'do' sleep with Julie, and I'm not saying that you 'do not' sleep with Julie. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her own bed, she would have found the gravy ladle by now. Love, Mom"

‘First class gardens call for first class equipment’- Gardener Dermot O’Neill
Fresh out of business school, the young man answered a want ad for an accountant. Now he was being interviewed by a very nervous man who ran a small business that he had started himself. "I need someone with an accounting degree," the man said. "But mainly, I'm looking for someone to do my worrying for me."
"Excuse me?" the young accountant said. "I worry about a lot of things," the man said. "But I don't want to have to worry about money. Your job will be to take all the money worries off my back." "I see," the young accountant said. "And how much does the job pay?" "I will start you at €85,000." "Eighty-five thousandeuros!" the young accountant exclaimed. "How can such a small business afford a sum like that?" "That," the owner said, "is your first worry."
Jerry was removing some engine valves from a car on the lift when he spotted the famous heart surgeon Dr. Samuel Kaiser, who was standing off to the side, waiting for the service manager. Jerry, who was somewhat of a loud mouth, shouted across the garage, "Hey Kaiser. Is dat you? Come over here a minute." The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where Jerry was working on the car. Jerry, in a loud voice that all could hear, said argumentatively, "So Mr. fancy doctor, look at this work. I too, take valves out, grind 'em, put in new parts, and when I'm finished, this baby will purr like a kitten. So how come you get the big bucks, when you and me are doing basically the same work?" Dr. Kaiser, very embarrassed, shook his head and replied in a soft voice, "Try doing your work with the engine running."

Give your home a new lease of life Rainbow Roofing is a roof spraying system that provides protection for roof tiles and slate. The process involves the roof being fully checked, with any repair work carried out. A primer and the roof paint follow this. The system is an Eco friendly one carrying a 17-year guarantee from a major European institute. There are clear advantages - the visual difference and of course the financial one. As the system restores roof tiles to a condition as good as new then the need for replacing your roof to recapture its initial glory is gone. This is a great advantage whether redecorating your home or planning to sell it.

Children’s Hospital Crumlin Mini Marathon
Its that time of the year again and we are looking for willing volunteers to take part and help raise money by participating in this years Ladies Mini Marathon which takes place in Dublin on Monday the 1st of June. As with previous years this is a great days entertainment and a fantastic day out for anyone involved so I would hope that people who participated before will do so again and hopefully try to get some friends with them this year. For more information please have a look at www.womensminimarathon.ie where you can find a full list of all registered charities that are participating this year and you will also note that our group have been registered in that list as an official charity. This event is one of the main events each year, which official charities use as an annual fundraiser. Unfortunately though, other groups and organisations that are not official charities have in recent years started to use this event to raise money, and the mini marathon organisation cannot stop this as much as they would like to, so we would ask people to think very carefully when they are asked to take
part for an organisation or to sponsor someone for the event and check that the cause is worthwhile and a registered charity as opposed to just an organisation raising money etc. because every euro that goes to these organisations or groups is money that is vital for charities to continue their work and in the case of the Children’s hospital LIFE SAVING WORK. This year we really need your help as it is harder and harder to fund raise and yet without voluntary contributions etc the Children’s hospital suffers as a result. If you participate for our charity your efforts are helping to raise much needed funds which help to stop many children’s diseases and to indeed save and improve children’s health and lives in Ireland. It is just one day out of the year and a fun 10k event so please think seriously about participating for us and get in touch. If you would like to take part this year either jogging, walking or running please contact Mike Delaney at 0504 32220 or 086-8800597 for more details.

Exercise Pointers The only reason I would take up exercising is so that I could hear heavy breathing again...
- I have to exercise early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.
- It is well documented that for every minute that you exercise, you add one minute to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at 5,000 per month.
- I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
- I joined a health club last year, spent about 4,000 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up.
- The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.
- I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.
- If you are going to try cross-country running, start with a small country.
Each year, many joggers contend with overuse injuries such as tendonitis, muscle strains, or stress fractures. These are often caused by jogging too far, too fast, or by not stretching or warming up correctly. Reduce your risk of injury by warming up and stretching before you start exercising. Do jumping jacks or walk in place for three to five minutes. Follow with stretching exercises to loosen the hamstring, groin, thigh and calf muscles. Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds. Avoid the urge to bounce into the stretch. Repeat these exercises after you have finished jogging. Your jogging routine should also go hand in hand with muscle-building exercises or weight training. Exercises that strengthen leg muscles, for

The Daisy is the April Flower When we refer to daisies we are referring to several different varieties of flowers all of which bear similar characteristics. The common names for the flowers we refer to as daisies are daisy, marguerite, and ox-eye daisy. The true daisy is bellis perennis; the ox-eye daisy and marguerite are technically chrysanthemums. Linguistic Roots for the Name Daisy The Latin name for daisy comes from the word bellus, which literally means beautiful. The common name daisy comes from Old English when native speakers referred to daisies as daeges-eaye or ‘day’s eye,’ which was eventually contracted to the single word daisy. The common name is a result of the fact that daisies open and close in relationship to the amount of sunlight they are receiving. In fact, the sun loving habit of daisies has resulted in the blossom gaining the nickname ‘the sun’s consort’ or ‘sponsa solis.’ The name marguerite has two possible sources. Some suggest that it is derived from the Greek word margaretes, which means pearl. Others think that it is a form of the name Margaret. Margaret of Anjou is the most likely candidate for bestowing her name on the flower since her personal banner had daisies embroidered on it.
Daisies have been the subject of many verses. One favourite verse that everyone learns as a child is s/he loves me, s/he loves me not; s/he loves me, s/he loves me not.” The popularity of this verse has resulted in the daisy being called ‘love’s oracle.’ Like dozens of other flowers, the daisy has been associated with various deities. Historically, daisies were sacred to Freya and Ostara, both Germanic goddesses. The daisy has also been associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Naturally, the Catholic Church adopted it as a symbol of the Virgin Mary because ‘love conquers all things.’ However, the association that has most stuck with the daisy is the reference to it in various ‘Books of Hours,’ which suggested that a person could learn something from even the smallest blossom in God’s creation, the daisy. As a result, the daisy’s contribution to the language of flowers is as a symbol of contempt for worldly goods.’ If you send daisies to someone, you are sharing with them contempt for worldly goods or the desire for modesty. However, perhaps it would be better get straight to the point and ask whether they love you.

How Can My Construction Business Survive When Business is Slow? A slow down can be an opportunity for growth. It has been said that the best time for your business to prepare for growth is when business slows down. This is because other businesses close, and yours has the opportunity to gain a higher percentage of the market. You also have more time to improve your business. Then when the economy picks back up, your business would become larger than it was before, if you can survive the slow times. The key to surviving is increasing marketing, efficiency, and quality, while decreasing expenses. Better Marketing This is most important. Many make the mistake of cutting back on marketing when money is tight, but this will make money even more tight. You need to see where your marketing is getting the best results for the least cost. Keep track of every new job, every time a client contacts you, and how that client found out about you. Then compare the number of jobs you get from each type of marketing. Divide this into the amount you spend on this marketing. This will tell you how much you spend in marketing for every job you get. For example if you get ten new jobs from advertising, and this marketing cost you €500, you spent €50 to get each of these jobs. If you spend €1000 to set up a booth in a home
show, and you get twenty jobs, each of these jobs cost you €50. If you can make it your habit to track your marketing results in this way, you will see how to get more work for less cost. Another inexpensive but very successful marketing program is to contact your previous clients. Tell them how much you enjoyed working with them. Then let them know that you would appreciate being able to contact anyone they know who might benefit from what you do. If they help you to find some work, remember to show your appreciation. Word of mouth recommendation is the best marketing you can get. Canvassing is another successful marketing technique. You can do this yourself for little or no cost. Organize who you will visit and prepare what you will say. Choose the businesses or homes that would most likely be interested in what you do. When you call on someone be polite, friendly, and get to the point, showing them how your product or service can help them. Be prepared for common objections. If they reject your offer because they don't know you, be ready with a list of local references, and show them your memberships of various organizations. If they don't have time, pull out your appointment book and ask them when would be a better time. Try to (contd. next page)

How Can My Construction Business (contd.) Survive When Business is Slow? exchange names and phone numbers in case the appointment needs to be changed. Calling on people you don't know might seem scary, but it can be a great marketing program that costs very little, and if you're not successful, you haven't lost anything but your time. An Internet web page can also be great for marketing. To be successful, your web page needs to be interesting and have good traffic. To be interesting, provide information that your prospective clients want. Think from their point of view. Instead of selling to them, teach them about your product. If you are not skilled at writing or web page design, get professional help. To have many visitors your web site needs to be linked to other web pages with heavy traffic (eg. www.tipptatler.com).

What is the HES scheme? The Home Energy Saving (HES) scheme provides grants to homeowners who are interested in improving the energy efficiency of their home in order to reduce energy use and costs as well as greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme is open to all owners of existing houses built before 2006. Sustainable Energy Ireland administers the scheme. Landlords and owners of multiple properties may also apply, however they must submit a separate application form for each property. If you are a landlord or a management company considering an entire building upgrade, please contact SEI before applying online for the grant. Assistance will be provided by way of fixed grants towards the costs of implementing upgrade measures. The types of measures currently eligible under this scheme are roof insulation, wall insulation, high efficiency boilers and heating control upgrades. There is also a grant for households who choose to get a Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment Before and After the works are completed, however this is not mandatory
Grants will be provided to homeowners who invest in energy efficiency improvements in the following area: * Roof Insulation * Wall Insulation – this includes either cavity wall, internal dry lining or external insulation * Installation of a High Efficiency (> 90%) Gas or Oil fired Boilers with Heating Controls Upgrade* * Heating Controls Upgrade * Building Energy Rating (BER) – you can get a grant for a BER if one is done before and after the works are completed *Minimum requirement of: 2 zones (space and water) with 7 day programmer (time and temperature) control and boiler interlock, time and temperature control of electric immersion heater and either 1 more zone control or 3 TRV’s. When might you NOT qualify for a Home Energy Saving scheme grant? Depending on the scale or type of works being undertaken, the HES grant may not necessarily be appropriate for all homeowners. Homeowners will not qualify for a grant:
Who can avail of the scheme? It is a National scheme and therefore all homeowners of dwellings built before 2006 may apply. Landlords and owners of multiple properties may also apply, however they must submit a separate application form for each property. If you are a landlord or a management company considering an entire building upgrade, please contact SEI before applying online for the grant. Can I apply if I was part of the HES Pilot scheme?

* If your first grant application would be for less than €500. So if you are only intending to do attic insulation (€250) or blown cavity wall insulation (€400) on their own then you will not qualify for a grant * If you are installing a boiler with a typical efficiency <90% then you will not qualify for a grant * If you decide to simply install a boiler but not upgrade the heating controls to the minimum prescribed standard then you will not qualify for a grant * If you decide to simply replace your boiler but not upgrade the heating controls to the minimum prescribed standard then you will not qualify for a grant * If you wish to get a grant for a Building Energy Rating (BER) then you must undertake a BER both before and after undertaking the appropriate grant aided measures.

Property Price Guarantees Buyers Broker Ltd. urges caution for inexperienced buyers relying on property developers’ price guarantees. Buyers Broker Ltd. urges caution for inexperienced buyers relying on property developers’ price guarantees. Consumer champions Buyers Broker Ltd. have urged inexperienced buyers, particularly first-time buyers to exercise caution when considering buying into new housing developments where the developers have given a fixedprice guarantee. This type of a guarantee in effect means that the developer is agreeing not to reduce house prices further. Significantly, this does not guarantee that the value will not reduce. Also, this guarantee is enforceable against the developer only, it will not apply to second-hand homes within the development nor will it apply where the banks seize the properties in the event of insolvency. This guarantee scheme was introduced by developers in an attempt to stabilize the property market and to create a “bottom”, however, this is a false bottom and it will not accurately
reflect market trends in the current market. “What developers are trying to effect is a false levelling or bottoming-out of the property market; however they can only control the price not the value and this is where buyers may potentially lose out …” Carol Tallon, Director Buyers Broker Ltd. This scheme will benefit buyers who have been sitting on the fence or waiting for prices to drop within their chosen development. Those buyers can now purchase without fear of further reductions by the developers after they compete the transaction. Buyers Broker agents nationwide are advising clients and buyers wishing to buy into this price guarantee scheme that while the price is fixed, the value-added extras are entirely negotiable – do not accept the standard package offered, further value can be achieved. The Easter Bunny In pre-Christian times, the hare and the rabbit were the most fertile animals known and became the symbols of new life during Spring. The origins of the rabbit as an Easter symbol, began in Germany. The first mention of the Easter Bunny is found in Germany in the 1500's, but it was only during the early 1800's that the first edible Easter Bunnies were made and they were made of pastry and sugar.

The children believed that if they were good, the "Oschter Haws" would lay a nest of coloured eggs. They would build a nest, usually a boy's cap or a girl's bonnet in a secluded place in their home. The use of elaborate Easter baskets would come later as the tradition of the Easter Bunny spread throughout the country.

Give New Life to Tired Timber Floors Tipperary man, Seamus Gleeson, has established a unique odourless, dustless floor sanding franchise in County Tipperary and Offaly which will revolutionise the industry and breathe new life into the whole solid and semi-solid timber floor industry. Wood is seen as a healthier option to carpets and is easier to clean, however over time, like carpets, they can become scratched, worn and tired looking. Unlike carpets however they don’t need to be replaced. They can be sanded down and refinished. The usual way of doing this was with an industrial sander, which created a tremendous amount of dust and then to re-varnish the floor. Seamus, with his new franchise ‘The Ultimate Floor Sanding Compa-
ny’, can change all this. He guarantees that they will make an old floor look new without producing dust or an odour. An added benefit to the householder or business is that there is no mess or inconvenience when they work on the floor. They also guarantee to turn up when they say they will, finish on time and not leave any mess behind (thanks to the dustless systems used). Dairy Farmers cannot afford to return to 1983 Milk Prices with 2009 costs Speaking lastek to the board members of Glanbia in Navan and Kilkenny, IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Richard Kennedy said the last time Irish milk producers were paid 20c/l for milk was 1983. The IFA man, who also met the Chairman and Chief Executive of Lakeland Dairies on Monday in Kells, said that while 1983 production costs, at around 12c/l, allowed farmers to generate an income, 2009 costs of 20c/l before own-labour meant most dairy farmers would face zero incomes this year. “We are starting to see the first signs of a turnaround in dairy markets, and co-ops must hold the highest possible milk price to help their suppliers. They must find savings in other parts of the business: every fraction of a cent counts in as difficult a year as this, when farmers are facing income losses none of them can weather,” Richard Kennedy said.
March, while EU milk supplies are down 0.5% on the previous quota year, despite a 2 to 2.5% quota increase,” he added. Mr Kennedy stated that 27c/l was the break-even price dairy farmers needed in 2009 to cover costs and own-labour ? the latter essential to generate the income required to service financial commitments and day-to-day family expenses. No co-op is currently paying that necessary break-even price, which is unsustainable. “My message to the board members of Glanbia and Lakeland, and to the boards of all the other co-ops who will be deciding their March milk price in the coming days, is that dairy farmers simply cannot afford to return to 1983 milk prices with 2009 costs,” Richard Kennedy said.
“Co-ops must understand that the March milk cheque is normally the first sizeable cheque of the year for dairy farmers, which is heavily re“There are positive developments lied upon to clear bills. Farm Incomes Hit Hard The decision by the Government to increase the income levy on gross incomes coupled with the cuts in REPS 4, Forestry and the Fallen Animal Scheme will hit farm incomes hard and coming on top of the cuts already imposed in last October’s budget was strongly criticised by IFA President Padraig Walshe. Mr Walshe said: “Farm income, which fell by over 12% in 2008,and is facing a similar decline this year, have been further hit by the Minister’s doubling of income levies and expenditure cuts. He said the doubling of the income levy on gross income unfairly discriminates against farmers and the self-employed.?” The IFA leader said “As the Levy is based on Gross Income, which makes no provision for capital expenditure, it seriously discriminates against farmers and other self-employed taxpayers whose businesses require significant amounts of ongoing capital investment. At a minimum, the Minister must reform the Income Levy calculation in the Finance Bill to ensure that it impacts equitably on all taxpayers by apply-
ing it to income after the deduction of capital allowances.” In relation to REPS 4, Mr Walshe criticised the 17% cut in the rate of payment which is a breach of the five-year contract, which 12,000 farmers have already signed up for. He said the Department of Agriculture must now reduce the cost of compliance with the scheme proportionately, and planning fees must reduce accordingly. On forestry, the IFA President said cuts of up to 10% in payments will have a very negative effect on incomes and directly impact the Government’s own policy of developing the sector, which is very shortsighted. Farmers have also been hit hard following the abolition of the Fallen Animal Scheme, and the Minister for Agriculture and his Department must now agree a more cost-effective means of disposal. Mr Walshe said overall the Budget was a missed opportunity to improve competitiveness in the economy and will do nothing to keep people in employment, or will do little to encourage the hiring of additional employees.

Electric Cars - Soon a Reality? Historic deal will transform Irish transport Electric vehicles moving from vision to reality – Minister Ryan Energy Minister Eamon Ryan has announced a major move in the electrification Irish motoring. In a hugely significant and new collaboration between Government, between the semistate electricity supplier ESB and between car manufacturer Renault-Nissan, these electric vehicles will be on Irish roads within 2 years. "This historic agreement", said Minister Ryan "is proof of Government's firm intention to act on the electrification of transport. Some months ago, I announced the Government electric vehicles target of 10% by 2020. Today's Memorandum of Understanding will help us not only realise, but surpass this target. We are well on our way and our streets will see the change very shortly". The Memoranda of Understanding (signed by Minister Ryan on behalf of the Government) and by Padraig McManus (for ESB) will create favourable conditions for the distribution of electric vehicles to the Irish market by Renault-Nissan. "In November, we sent a call to the market that Ireland was 'open for business' with electric cars. Our call has been answered by Renault-Nissan and I'd like to welcome them to the Irish market with this new product. Today we sign, what I hope will be the first of many agreements with interested companies". The Irish Government's intentions are not product-exclusive. "Today's initiative will transform our streets, will cut carbon emissions and
change the face of transport in Ireland," said Minister Ryan. "Again we see the ESB stepping up to the plate to secure Ireland's future and I commend them for their vision and work in this regard. This collaboration will provide the world with a model for how electric vehicles can be achieved globally. We will continue to press ahead". ESB Chief Executive Padraig McManus described today's development as an "an opportunity for Ireland to demonstrate its leadership in the green revolution, including in electric transport". "ESB has set out its plans to become carbon-neutral by 2035 and carbonneutral electricity will power an emissions-free transport system. ESB will roll out a charging network to support the development. We will guarantee open access to all electricity suppliers and car manufacturers and can ensure adherence to the strictest safety standards for the recharging points. The roll-out of electric vehicles will provide major employment opportunities in a number of areas", he said. Speaking at today's announcement, Andrew Palmer, Corporate Vice President, Nissan Motor Company, said the Renault-Nissan alliance looks forward to a successful partnership with Ireland. "We regard Ireland as a leader in the EV project. Demography and political support make Ireland one of the most suitable locations for a large scale roll out of electric vehicles. Renault and Nissan are particularly pleased to be working with the Irish Government and ESB in putting in place the correct conditions to support electric transport".

By Eamonn Walsh QFA Getting a mortgage is an exciting and sometimes scary time. You want to make sure that the process is as smooth as possible, so make sure to ask the right questions of your mortgage provider There are a number of must ask questions when it comes to getting a mortgage. The aim of this article is to (1) explain who are the Mortgage Providers, (2) offer Ten Questions a First Time Buyer can ask his/her Mortgage Provider and (3) show you what documents you’ll need to prepare a Mortgage Application. 1. Mortgage providers: You can get a mortgage through: * a bank * a building society * a Mortgage intermediary such as myself * certain credit unions. Banks and building societies sell their own products directly through their branches and may also sell through intermediaries such as mortgage brokers or agents. So when you visit a bank or building society branch you will only be offered the mortgage that lender provides. If you visit an intermediary/broker, you will generally have a choice of mortgages from the list of lenders they deal with. It is worth checking out how many lenders your broker represents. Some brokers provide mortgages from more lenders than others and some lenders only offer their products directly and do not use intermediaries at all. 2. Ten Questions to ask your mortgage provider:
8. How often is the interest on my mortgage calculated (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly) and what effect will this have on my total repayments? 9. What are the penalties (redemption fees) if I change from a fixed to a variable rate? 10. Is it possible to make lump-sum repayments and/or take a break from repayments?
This is the bare minimum of what you need to ask, although first time buyers might also like to ask if they can qualify for a 100% mortgage. Preparing a Mortgage Application:
Mortgage Application Documentation Checklist The following items are what most Lenders request. * P60 (for both persons if it is a joint application) * Three recent pay slips * Salary certificate / employers letter confirming permanency together with gross salary * Confirmation of source of deposit * Photocopy of identification: passport or driving licence * Verification of existing address by way of gas or electricity bill * Application form * Valuation fee if requested. * Evidence of savings if possible * last 2 years accounts if self employed
1. How much can I borrow? 2. How large a deposit do I need?
Again I hope the above is of some benefit to you.
3. What is the best type of mortgage for my needs? 4. How much will my repayments be a month over 20, 30 or 40 years? 5. How much will the interest cost be after 20, 30 or 40 years? 6. How much is mortgage protection a month? 7. How much is home insurance a month?

Tipperary Friends of Animals Sponsored Dog Walk
The Rose of Tralee, Aoife Kelly, showed her support for animal welfare when she launched the Sponsored Dog Walk in aid of Tipperary Friends of Animals SPCA. The annual 3 mile fun walk, will take place in Nenagh on Sunday, 17th May, starting and finishing in Banba Square. Sponsorship cards can be obtained from Sportsmans Dream, Kenyon Street, Nenagh or by phoning 086-8163707. The Sponsored Walk brings in much needed funds for the society who run a subsidized neutering voucher scheme for cats and dogs whose owners cannot afford the full cost of
neutering their pet. Another major expense is caring for homeless dogs, some of which are boarded in commercial boarding kennels until new homes can be found for them. all dogs are vaccinated, wormed, deflea’d and neutered before going to their new homes. We ask for a donation of €80 per dog which does not even cover the cost of neutering and a home check is done before a dog is given out. Total expenditure for the year is about €70 000, most of which comes from local fundraising such as flag days, church gate collections, bag packing and the dog walk.
Aoife Kelly, Rose of Tralee, and Linda Hehir, Tipperary Friends of Animals, with Holly and Rex. Tipperary Friends of Animals SPCA, is a voluntary organization with no paid staff. The society is always looking for volunteers for fundraising or fostering an animal, until it gets a permanent home. Featured in the photographs are Holly and Rex, both of whom are looking for a kind and loving home.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our current volunteers, without whom we would not be able to help animals in need. You can contact the society on 0868163707, or if you wish to adopt a dog, phone 086-8133707.
Raising Children was never easy.... To those of us who have children in our lives, Whether they are our own, Grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews, Or students... Here is something to make you chuckle.
'Yes way! ' 'Do NOT eat the fruit !' Said God. 'Why ? ' 'Because I am your Father and I said so’ God replied, Wondering why He hadn't stopped Creation after making the elephants
Whenever your children are out of control, You can take comfort from the thought that Even God's omnipo- A few minutes later, God saw His tence did not extend to His own children having an apple break children. And He was ticked! 'Didn't I tell you not to eat the fruit?' After creating heaven and earth, God asked. God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing he said was 'Uh huh,' Adam replied. ' DON'T !' 'Then why did you?'Said the Father. 'Don 't what ?' Adam replied. 'Don't eat the forbidden fruit.' God said. 'Forbidden fruit? We have forbidden fruit? Hey Eve..we have forbidden fruit!' ' No Way !'
'I don't know,' Said Eve. 'She started it!' Adam said. 'Did not!' 'Did too!' 'DID NOT!' Having had it with the two of them, God's punishment was that Adam
and Eve Should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed. If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they haven't taken it, Don't be hard on yourself.
4. Children seldom misquote you. In fact, They usually repeat word for word What you shouldn't have said 5. The main purpose of holding children's parties is to remind yourself that there are children More awful than your own
If God had trouble raising children, What makes you think it would be A 6. We childproofed our homes, piece of cake for you ? But they are still getting in. THINGS TO THINK ABOUT!
Advice for the day
1. You spend the first two years of their life Teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend The next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up.
Be nice to your kids. They will choose your Nursing home one day
2. Grandchildren are God's reward For not killing your own children. 3. Mothers of teens now know why Some animals eat their young.
And finally If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do what it says on aspirin bottle: ‘Take 2 aspirin and ‘Keep away from children!!!!

During the time of Julius Caesar a 1 percent sales tax was imposed. During the time of Caesar Augustus the sales tax was 4 percent for slaves and 1 percent for everything else. Lady Godiva was an Anglo-Saxon woman who lived in England during the 11th century. According to legend, Lady Godiva's husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia, promised to reduce the high taxes he levied on the residents of Coventry when she agreed to ride naked through the streets of the town. William of Orange imposed a window tax in 1696 as a replacement for the Hearth Tax but was repealed in 1851 when it was replaced by House Duty. The taxpayer was the occupier rather than the owner and often built or disguised windows to avoid paying the tax. In Dublin, a lot of windows were built up which lead to even more unhygienic conditions than the people were already living in. This in course, led to disease becoming more rampant and the tax became known in Dublin as the Typhus Tax. The tax led to the development of the Half Door which was not a window but let light into the house. By 1825, houses with less than 8 windows became exempt.
The nursery rhyme, Baa Baa Black Sheep, is a description of the medieval 'Great' or 'Old Custom' wool tax of 1275,to raise money for the Crusades, which survived until the fifteenth century. The idea was that the Master was the King, the Dame was the Church and the Little Boy was the farmer himself. This meant
a 66% tax. Contrary to some commentaries, this tax did not involve the collection of one third to the king, and one third to the church, but a less punitive sum of 6s 8d to the Crown per sack, about 5 per cent of the value. A Urine Tax was Imposed by the Roman emperor Nero, around A.D. 60. Why urine? The contents of public toilets were collected by tanners and laundry workers for the ammonia, which was used for curing leather and bleaching togas. Nero slapped a fee on the collectors (not the producers) and it was such a money-raiser that Nero’s successor, Vespasian, continued the tax. When asked why he kept on the Smell Levy, he held up a gold coin and said, “This does not smell”. Peter the Great, czar of Russia, imposed a tax on souls in 1718…meaning everybody had to pay it (it’s similar to a head tax or a poll tax). Peter was antireligious , but agreeing with him didn’t excuse anyone from paying the tax—if you didn’t believe humans had a soul, you still had to pay a “religious dissenters” tax. Peter also taxed beards, beehives, horse collars, hats, boots, basements, chimneys, food, clothing, all males, as well as birth, marriage, and even burial. A favourite strategy of governments to encourage population growth and raise money at the same time was to impose a Bachelor Tax. Julius Caesar tried it in 18 B.C. The English imposed it in 1695. The Russians under Peter the Great used it in 1702, as did the Missouri legislature in 1820. The Spartans of ancient Greece didn’t care about the money—they preferred public humiliation. Bachelors in Sparta were required to march around the public market in wintertime stark naked, while singing a song making fun of their unmarried status. In 1795 powdered wigs were all the rage in men’s fashion. Desperate for income to pay for military campaigns abroad, British prime minister William Pitt the Younger levied a tax on wig powder. Although the tax was short-lived due to the protests against it, it did ultimately have the effect of changing men’s fashions. By 1820 powdered wigs were out of style.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have been writing in this column for quite a while now. However, the information that we give you every fortnight is futile unless you implement it. In order to actually buy and sell stocks and shares, one needs to set up an account with a broker who acts as a medium between them and the market. There are two types of broker namely traditional and online discount. Some examples of the big name traditional brokers include Davys, Goodbodys, Merrion Capital etc. The purpose of these companies is to take an order from you and then proceed to execute the trades on your behalf. Some of these firms have set up an “online trading” facility, but this is not discount broking as will be profiled shortly, but instead establishing an email relationship with their clientele as opposed to dealing with their requests over the phone. An online discount broker is in existence to offer a cheaper method of trading but the investor makes a more hands on contribution to the trading activity. It is noteworthy that both types of brokers provide advisory and execution only facilities. An execution only account simply involves the individual placing the trade with the broker. An advisory account is the more expensive option – this includes the trading service but the extra amount is payable for the advisor’s recommendations. There are many questions that one should ask potential brokers when shopping around as there can be vast differences between them in terms of value and service and also, brokers can have many other hidden charges that could potentially eat into your returns. The following are a list of queries that when answered, will provide you with a clear idea as to what fees you may pay for a broking facility; * Are there set up fees?

On selecting a broker that the investor is happy with, he/she needs to set up an account and then buy the stocks that fit their chosen strategy. We have been dealing with two brokers, namely National Irish Bank and also ODL Securities in London. More on Tax For all the unhappy tax payers, to help you get through this time, we have gathered a number of tax related quotes to try and put a smile back on your face: " I'm proud to be paying taxes in the United States. The only thing is—I could be just as proud for half the money." - Arthur Godfrey "Day in and day out, your tax accountant can make or lose you more money than any single person in your life, with the possible exception of your kids." - Harvey Mackay "On my income tax 1040 it says 'Check this box if you are blind.' I wanted to put a check mark about three inches away." - Tom Lehrer "There's nothing wrong with the younger generation that becoming taxpayers won't cure." - Dan Bennett "What is the difference between a taxidermist and a tax collector?
The taxidermist takes only your skin." - Mark Twain "People who complain about paying their income tax can be divided into two types: men and women." anonymous "If you get up early, work late, and pay your taxes, you will get ahead -- if you strike oil." - J. Paul Getty "Why does a slight tax increase cost you two hundred dollars and a substantial tax cut save you thirty cents?" - Peg Bracken "If the IRS took 100 taxpayers at random and sent each an incorrect notice that they owed an extra $92.35 in taxes and interest, more than two-thirds would probably just send in a check without investigating further." - G. Guttman "The government deficit is the difference between the amount of money the government spends and the amount it has the nerve to collect." - Sam Ewing
The Big Moral Test This test only has one question, but it's a very important one. By giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally. The test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which you will have to make a decision. Remember that your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous. Please read slowly and give due consideration to each line. THE SITUATION: You are in Ireland, Dublin to be specific. There is chaos all around you caused by a hurricane with severe flooding. This is a flood of biblical proportions. You are a photo-journalist working for the Irish Daily Mail, and you're caught in the middle of this epic disaster. The situation is nearly hopeless. You're trying to shoot career-making photos. There are houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing into the water.
Nature is unleashing all of its destructive fury. THE TEST: Suddenly, you see a man in the water. He is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken down with the debris. You move closer... Somehow, the man looks familiar...You suddenly realize who it is... It's Brian Cowen! You notice that the raging waters are about to take him under forever. You have two options: You can save the life of Brian Cowen, or you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer Prize winning photo, documenting the death of one of the country's most powerful men! THE QUESTION: Here's the question, and please give an honest answer... Would you select high contrast colour film, or would you go with theclassic simplicity of black and white?.

This brings the total amount granted to local authorities for anti-litter awareness initiatives to over €8.74 million since the Litter Pollution Act was introduced in 1997. The 2009 allocation represents a decrease of 14% on the 2008 allocation, necessitated by the challenging economic circumstances, but both Ministers are confident that, despite the decrease, local authorities can continue their important work in this area.
In announcing the grant allocations for 2009, Minister Gormley said, “Despite the economic slow down, it is important that we strive to maintain the sustained decrease we have seen in litter pollution levels across the country over the last ten years. While there has been a small decrease in the level of grants allocated this year, this in no way reflects any lack of commitment on the part of Government to the ongoing war against litter. The appearance of a community remains vital to both social and economic activity, and local authorities and community groups must strive to do more with less”. Minister Kitt acknowledged the role being played by local authorities and urged them to continue their work with community groups to tackle the litter and graffiti problems in their area. “Local authorities have contributed The grants to city and county coun- greatly to the decrease in litter polcils cover a broad range of measlution levels around the country, ures to raise public awareness and but much remains to be done. Bumps in the Fields and Crumbling Walls – Hermann Geissel With the longer days, many will be rambling or hillwalking throughout the country, likely passing over bumps in the fields, standing stones, and around old tombs and monuments. If you’ve ever wondered about these traces of our ancestors, then Bumps in the Fields and Crumbling Walls, by Kildare resident Hermann Geissel, is an excellent companion to your rambles. The subtitle of this volume is ‘Practical Archaeology for Sunday Afternoons’, and the author has produced an excellent guide to becoming an expert amateur archaeologist. It begins with a guide explaining how to get started, and then the fourteen sections provide pointers that help you explore different features and buildings, from dry lakes, roads, field systems, and Stone Age tombs to more recent mud and stone houses. What makes the book really useful are the 150 colour photos of sites and monuments, plus the comprehensive glossary of archaeology terms, a glossary of Irish words in placenames (a great source for quiz questions!), a timeline that sites the archaeology historically, and maps
that mark locations of sites throughout the country. Bumps in the Fields and Crumbling Walls is available in paperback at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, for €10, as is Hermann Geissel’s study of the Slí Mhór on the Esker Riada, A Road on the Long Ridge. Sheelagh na Gig is open 6 days a week: Tue and Wed 9.30am-5pm, Thu and Fri 9.30am7pm, Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday noon-6pm. Call in on 18 April to celebrate Record Store Day and pick up the best in world, jazz, and folk music or maybe a bargain CD. The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. This time I ask You this very special one (mention favour).
