Performance Note The 12 sections in Movements I-II were each inspired by a Japanese haiku. The 2 sections in III were inspired by 2 woodblock prints from Hiroshige's "100 Famous Views of Edo". (See Appendix.) In Movement I, there should be slight pause (ca 2-3 secs) between each section, unless otherwise indicated by 'attacca'. In Movements II-III, the pause between sections should be slightly longer (ca 4-5 secs).

Appendix Movements I and II of this String Quartet were inspired by the 12 Japanese haiku below1, both in terms of their content and key 'formal' characteristics, such as a 'single breath' duration and 5-7-5 syllabic structure. Movement III was inspired by the 'dramatic imagery' of two woodblock prints from Hiroshige's "100 Famous Views of Edo" (1857).2
