Often when clients are first starting an exercise training program, it’s typical they are unhappy with their physical stature. So as they train and begin to see results, it seems natural they become happier. While true, there’s more to the algorithm of exercise and training that helps us feel happy. In addition to benefiting our physical health it also helps us become and stay emotionally healthy. How does exercise trigger our brain to help make us happy? Most of us are aware of that the more we exercise the more muscle and more stamina we have. If the elevator goes out and we’re standing with a bad of groceries, we now can take the stairs. Experiencing how daily an activity like climbing stairs becomes easier when we exercise tangibly shows us how exercise positively effects the body. So <NYC Personal Trainers looked into this and found out what actually happens: When you start exercising, your brain documents this as if being in a stressful situation; your heart pressure increases triggering your brain goes into fight or fight mode. To protect yourself and your brain from stress, you release a protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). This BDNF has a protective and also reparative element to your memory neurons. It acts as a reset switch. That’s why we often feel more at ease and have more clarity after exercising that eventually leads us to feeling better.
At the same time, endorphins, another chemical to fight stress, is released in your brain. Their job is to reduce the perception of pain, improve immunity and also helps you relax. The main purpose of your endorphins, said researcher MK McGovern at Bryn Mawr College, is:
“Endorphins tend to minimize the discomfort of exercise, block the feeling of pain and are even associated with a feeling of euphoria.” In short, exercise promotes the generation and release of endorphins and BDNF. These natural mood boosters enhance feelings of optimism and satisfaction while reducing the activity of hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol, which promote feelings of anxiety and tension. So we’re left feeling less anxious and more relaxed. Maintaining happiness depends on a regular exercise routine Now that we know the basic foundations of why exercising makes us happy, and what happens inside our brain cells, the next question is does it affect us beyond exercise? A study from Penn State University shed some light on the matter and the results are even more interesting: “Those who had exercised during the preceding month but not on the day of testing generally did better on the memory test than those who had been sedentary, but did not perform nearly as well as those who had worked out that morning.” The results of the study found that if you work out regularly it will still help you be more productive and happier on a given work day, if you didn’t work out that particular day. The University of Bristol also conducted a study that furthers this point: “On exercise days, people’s mood significantly improved after exercising. Mood stayed about the same on days they didn’t, with the exception of people’s sense of calm which deteriorated.”
So, BDNF and endorphins are the reasons exercise makes us feel so good. The increase of the BDNF proteins in your brain acts as a mood enhancer, and the release of endorphins when you start exercising provides a feeling of euphoria. Interestingly, the release of these positive and powerful hormones feels so could, we want more.
