Javea recorded a 82'7% occupancy during the holidays

The Department of Tourism has released XĂ bia hotel occupancy data recorded this Easter in the town and, thanks to last minute bookings, have experienced a marked improvement on the forecasts. Average occupancy of hotels, hostels and campsites between Good Friday and Easter Monday was 82.7%, with occupations of more than 95% in hotels with higher capacity and near the beach.

Another fact that shows the high number of visitors received by the town on this holiday was the high demand for information that was recorded in the three tourist offices, which have remained open all three holiday days. In total there were 2168 people

who have asked for information during this Easter and asked about the planned activities.

Also, the Councillor for Tourism, Antonio Miragall, also recalled the importance of tourism for a second home, a very important group for overall occupancy data and can not be calculated until there is data for water consumption and waste generation. The mayor has called the data "positive", especially in the current economic climate, and stressed its willingness to work closely with the business sector to coordinate initiatives to maintain good figures in this important economic sector .

Quicksave in the Port is closing it’s doors, what a shame that there will be nowhere for the locals to get their british goods on their doorstep. Good luck in the future Lin and thank you for serving us Brits so well for so long.

Predictions are that this year will be a bumper year for tourism. Let’s hope that the weather bucks up for them.

The beach bars are up and running once again, it doesn't seem two minutes since I said that they were coming down. I guess that just means that I’m getting old and that time really does fly when you’re having fun.

I must admit semi retirement is suiting me very well.

Norman Reeley local author will be launching his first book “Malevolent Karma”on the 18th of April. Hope that goes well for you Norman.

Rumour has it that the weather is about to improve a little, not before time if you ask me. I am seriously thinking of going further south next winter. I hear South America is quite warm at this time of year and the language is the same. Luckily now that the Grapevine is now on line we can do it from anywhere in the world.

Don’t worry we will still have a finger on the pulse in Javea. Our contributors are very good. I suppose I should get back my house renovations now, the painting won’t do itself. So until next month, as ever T.T.F.N. Sue.

Dear Grapevine Friends,

I recently had the pleasure of being a guest at a lunch at the Club Nautico hosted by the Costa Blanca N o r d i c Association. The lunch was attended by over 70 residents from the Scandinavian countries, and I gave a brief speech in my faulty English which nevertheless was welcomed!!

Xàbia exits from the Casa del Mediterraneo organisation.

The Casa del Mediterráneo evolved in 2009, focusing on developing international relations between the countries bordering the Mediterranean, with the participation of the central government, the Valencian Generalitat, and the municipalities of Alicante, Benidorm and Xàbia. The latter two were formed as subsidiaries and pledged to support 5% of the cost. However despite Xàbia’s contribution, the promised financial and promotional benefits did not materialise.

When the new Xàbia administration took over in 2011, as mayor, I decided to stop the payments in 2011 and 2012 (which has saved the town 260,000 euros).

At a recent plenary session of the Town Council there was a unanimous vote to relinquish membership.

Spain’s Foreign Minister Señor José Manuel García-Margallo, has a house in Xàbia, and took time from his Easter holiday to pay a courtesy visit to the Town Hall, where we had a cordial meeting.

The big event in Xàbia during March was the completion of the renovations to the Arenal which was finished on time and within budget.

My warm congratulations to the Town Hall staff involved, and to the excellent cooperation of the contractors and the Valencian Government who financed the project. A special thanks to all the businesses on the Arenal who patiently put up with the disruption caused by the works.

Radio Ser in Dénia recently organised an interview with me and all the local journalists who report on news from Xàbia.

I highlighted my key policy of being accessible and aware of the needs and concerns of our citizens. The meeting for Radio Ser’s interview was hosted by Pángel Albi, with the participation of Luis Pons of Canfali, Concha Pastor from Las Provincias, Alfonso Padilla from Levante-Información, and Guiomar Ramírez-Montesinos from Xàbia AL DIA. A number of topics were discussed – notably IBI, balancing the town’s budget, citizen participation, and efforts to create jobs. In answer to one question I admitted that there was currently great distrust of politicians, but that now was the time to change things and let our citizens see us as people who wish to help them in their daily lives.

Good financial news for Xàbia! AMJASA has presented their report for Q4 of 2012, announcing a surplus of 794,996 euros, compared to 2011’s results of 138,336 euros. This reflects the policy of making savings in operating costs, an increase in water sales and improving all round efficiency.

Without the need to increase water rates, this will allow the water company to make new investments this year, giving priority to areas which suffer frequent water leaks.

After the Supreme Court decision nullified the catastral values, municipal revenues decreased by approx. 8 million euros. To meet this challenge we dramatically reduced unnecessary expenses, especially in the internal management of the Town Hall and the fiestas budget. We managed to increase revenue through inspections which brought to light many homes which had not previously paid their taxes.

With this and the combined effort by all the council departments and the support and understanding of various local cultural, sports, and fiestas associations, we not only reduced the deficit, but achieved a small surplus of around 140,000 euros for 2012.

Of course, I cannot write an article without speaking about “recycling” but this time, I have to tell you about a good action and a good way to recuperate plastic bottles caps. Different NGOs of Jávea are collecting them to pay the treatment of two kids who suffer from Cancer, live here and need extra care. Are you aware of this generous action?

To finish this April column, I would like to recount an anecdote. In fact a true story which will show you “the other side of the coin” and human hypocrisy: the other day, at the entrance of the “register office” I see a couple waiting. The lady is smoking. When she finishes, she throws her cigarette end on the floor and crushes it to make sure that it gets well impregnated in the tile. The paper bin WITH ASH-TRAY stands at 2 meters from her!!!!!!!! I must stop myself from saying something because Councillors are supposed to behave. I go back to my office and 5 minutes later, Yvonne from the “help desk phones me and asks me if I can attend somebody who is complaining about the dog poo on the new “Arenal” promenade. When I get to the desk, she introduces me to the same couple. Here is more or less what I couldn't avoid saying to the gentleman who was complaining about this crime: “the dogs don't read and apparently the owners don't either but it is more than anything else a question of education. It is the same as the case of a person who would throw a cigarette on the floor and stub it out the tile instead of using the ash-tray which stands at 2 meters….........as your wife did 10 minutes ago!!!!!!!

I hope that this story has put a smile on your face.........

Doris Courcelles, councillor for “services, environment and beaches” was born in Belgium and studied at a French university. She speaks Castellano, English, French, Dutch, and German and is still trying to improve her Valenciano. As a consequence, she knows many residents and societies of Spanish and other nationalities here in Jávea. She moved to Spain in 1978. She has a son aged 30 and can empathise with parents in a foreign country.

British Consulate to hold health seminar in Javea.

Continuing the series of seminars in support of foreign nationals resident in Javea the Help Desk has arranged for the British Consulate to deliver a presentation on health issues that affect British nationals living in Spain. The meeting will take place at La Casa de Cultura in Javea at 12.00 on Tuesday April 23rd. XD Councillor and Deputy Mayor Oscar Anton will be accompanied by Martyn Standing who is Advisor to the Pensions, Benefits and Healthcare team at the British Consulate in Alicante. Agenda 21 is a non-political process whereby inhabitants of a town can have a say in the long-term sustainable development of their community. Jávea has been part of this UN initiative since 2004, but as proceedings are mostly conducted in either Castellano and Valenciano, the authors decided that as more than half the population of Jávea consists of expatriates, it would be useful to set up a Wiki website to disseminate information in English. Among their considerations was the new law requiring tax payers to report their offshore assets. The President of the Association, Antonio Durán-Sindreu described the law as "disproportionate" and that it generated "huge legal uncertainty" Such was the interest in this regulation, 400 professionals attended a round table dedicated to this topic. The Spanish Property News Bulletin, Spanish Property insight highlights the negative effect this is having on the views of expatriates who were thinking of retiring or investing here. Basically, people are considering going elsewhere. "There has always been talk of Spain becoming the “California of Europe”, attracting millions of pensioners from Northern Europe to buy homes in Spain, and spend their savings here, creating wealth, jobs, and revenues for Government coffers. Already under threat from various scandals involving corruption and illegal building in popular places like Marbella, that model will be doomed if Spain becomes a fiscal danger zone for expats. It stands to reason this new law will discourage expats from retiring to Spain, or at least doing so legally and declaring their residency. Everyone knows the Spanish state is struggling to fund high deficits. How many expats will now move to Spain and put their life’s savings within the grasp of the Spanish tax authorities?"

for AMJASA to read meters and manage the water supply in case of leaks. AMJASA will therefor offer a grant of €120, the cost of installing a battery of meters for an entire building or urbanisation. They will also facilitate moving the meters in coordination with property associations - offering two proposals from which the associations can choose the most economical. Expenses incurred will subsequently be billed in chunks of 5% added to water bills over a maximum of 18 corresponding to 3 years. In the case of individuals, agreements will be made with the property owners. Where it's necessary to make a new connection to the water mains, AMJASA will bear the cost.

David Ferrer opens Arenal promenade named in his honour Despite the onset of stormy weather, the renovated Arenal promenade was officially inaugurated as the "Passeig Tenista David Ferrer" in the presence of the locally-born tennis player - currently number 4 in the world - who has become one of Jávea's favourite sons.

The long-awaited renovation project, financed by the Plan Confianza de la Generalitat, has vastly improved the tourist centre of the town with a new promenade surface, improved lighting and landscaped areas for shade. And Alberto Fabra, president of the Generalitat Valenciana, made his first official visit to the town along with Isabel Bonig, the regional minister in charge of Infrastructure, to join with mayor José Chulvi and members of the town council at the opening ceremony.

Xàbia Town Hall has an annual electricity bill of just over one million Euros per year. They have tried to cut consumption by reducing the brightness of street lights, and turning off alternate ones, but now they are looking for more radical solutions. Having noted that private companies can offer discount deals on electricity provision and still make a profit, the municipal water company AMJASA has been charged to find out if it, too can enter this market. A sub-committee has been set up to look into this possibility, though some scepticism has been expressed by opposition members.

Artist of the month

by Linda McGillycuddy Dusty Springfield was an English pop singer and record producer whose career extended from the late 1950s to the 1990s. With her distinctive sensual sound, she was an important blue-eyed soul singer, and at her peak was one of the most successful British female performers.

She is a member of both the US Rock and Roll and UK Music Halls of Fame. International polls have named Springfield among the best female rock artists of all time. Her image, supported by a peroxide blonde beehive hairstyle, evening gowns, and heavy make-up, made her an icon of the Swinging Sixties.

Dusty Springfield was born as Mary O’Brien to a music loving Irish family living in West London and had two brothers, one was Tom with whom she would form The Springfields. She was given the nickname "Dusty" due to playing football with boys in the street and was described as a tomboy. As a member of a vocal trio The Springfields, Dusty developed skills in harmonising and

microphone technique, and recorded, performed on TV, and played at live shows in the United Kingdom including at United States Air Force bases in continental Europe and later travelled to Nashville. The local music that she heard during this visit helped turn her style from folk and country towards pop music rooted in rhythm and blues.

Dusty Springfield released her first solo single "I Only Want to Be with You" which was one of the first songs played on Top of the Pops. It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc in the UK. Her debut album, A Girl Called Dusty, included mostly cover versions of her favourite artists' songs and she later began a collaboration with Burt Bacharach and recorded "Wishin' and Hoping” and the emotional “I Just don’t know what to do with Myself”, the latter song set the standard for much of her later material.

Dusty had very strong social opinions and when touring South Africa, her contract specifically excluded segregated performances, one of the first British artists to do so. But in December 1964 her tour of South Africa was controversially terminated, and she was deported because she performed for an integrated audience at a

theatre near Cape Town, which was against the then government's segregation policy.

Springfield introduced the Motown sound to a wider UK audience, both with her covers of Motown songs, and by facilitating the first UK TV appearance for The Temptations, The Supremes, The Miracles, and Stevie Wonder on a special edition of the TV show Ready Steady Go! Dusty Springfield recorded the Bacharach-David composition "The Look of Love" for the James Bond parody film Casino Royale. For one of the slowest-tempo hits of the sixties, Bacharach created a "sultry" feel by the use of minor-seventh and major-seventh chord changes, while Hal David's lyrics epitomized longing and lust perfected expressed by Dusty’s breathy sensual delivery. “The Look of Love" was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song of 1967.

Hugely influenced by US pop music, Dusty Springfield instructed UK backing musicians to capture the spirit of US musicians and copy their instrumental playing styles. In the studio, she was a perfectionist. When recording studios did not provide the sound she required, she would try recording in the ladies' toilets for its superior acoustics. Another example of refusal to use the studio is "I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten" – it was recorded at the end of a corridor.

Springfield signed with Atlantic Records, and during the Memphis recording sessions Springfield suggested to Wexler (one of the heads of Atlantic Records) that he should sign the newly-formed UK band, Led Zeppelin.

She knew their bass guitarist, John Paul Jones, from his session work on her earlier albums. On her recommendation and without ever having seen them, Wexler signed Led Zeppelin to a $200,000 deal with Atlantic, which, at the time was the biggest contract for a new band.

Dusty Springfield was a major star, though her record sales were declining. In the mid seventies she put her solo musical car on hold and chose to live as a recluse in the US and avoid scrutiny by UK tabloids. She was gay and at that time, gay or bisexual performers knew that being 'outed' would lead to prurient media attention and loss of record contracts. She had always suffered from stage fright, and combined with addiction problems and turbulent personal affairs had decided to stay away from public life.

But in 1987, she accepted an invitation from Pet Shop Boys to duet with their lead singer, Neil Tennant, on the single "What Have I Done to Deserve this?" Tennant cites Dusty in Memphis as one of his favourite albums, and he leapt at the suggestion of using her vocals. She also appeared on the promotional video. The single rose to No. 2 on both the US and UK charts. Dusty returned to the studio with Pet Shop Boys, who produced her recording of their song "Nothing Has Been Proved", commissioned for the soundtrack of the 1989 drama film, Scandal. Released as a single in February 1989, it gave her fifteenth UK Top 20 hit.

Quentin Tarantino caused a revival of interest in her music in 1994 by including "Son of a Preacher Man" in the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, which sold over three million copies.

Her final live performance was on The Christmas with Michael Ball special in December 1995. Dusty died of breast cancer on 2 March 1999, aged 59.

Smokers at risk from sight loss A LOCAL optician is warning smokers of the risks that the habit poses to their vision.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss for people over the age of 55 in the western world. AMD is a degenerative retinal eye disease that causes progressive loss of central vision. Hi Everyone!

As quite a lot of you have gathered, Microsoft has made some changes to their free e-mail account system, their worldwide established Hotmail. Lately I’ve been receiving many queries about issues that have arisen since this forced change has taken place; the way we see, access and perform tasks that we already had under control has changed significantly.

Although you haven’t agreed to the new layout, it’s Microsoft’s policy that there will be no way to revert to the previous configuration with which most of you were comfortable and confident, as this new layout also incorporates social networking integration, SkyDrive, Office Web Apps and in the future, Skype video chat; with this new service Microsoft has decided to challenge Gmail and Google’s suite of online apps, as even being one of the most extended free email system, lately Google and it’s email system are gradually growing in number of users and Microsoft wants to offer an efficient system to compete against this.

Very little has changed for Hotmail over the years, and Microsoft says it realizes it must “take a bold step, break from the past and build a brand new service from the ground up” if it wants to compete. The result is Outlook.com, so if we decide to keep on using their system, we must familiarize with the new layout asap.

It promises to offer Microsoft’s spam filter, a “graymail” filter to keep subscribed email content

such as shopping site updates and newsletters separate from junk mail, plus unlimited email storage space. Microsoft also says that the clean design shows 30 percent more messages on a single page than other webmail clients, not displaying ads related to the contents of our emails, as a common complaint from Gmail users is that Google monitors their email content to be used for commercial purposes. the first thing one notices is the design, which takes its minimalist cues from other recent Microsoft properties such as Windows 8, which we have been talking about lately, and Windows Phone, which is Microsoft’s operating software for multimedia handheld devices.

The new Outlook uses the same four-column design that Hotmail did with some slight differences. On the far left you have the Folders and Quick View Pane, next to that is the message list, followed by the largest column where you can view messages. The biggest change is in the far right column, which in Hotmail was occupied by ads. When you login the first thing you will see in the far right are Bing deals and offers (ads), but you can turn that space into something more personal by clicking on the Messaging icon in the top right corner.

You will also notice a thin rail of ads on the right side of the interface. Along the top bar, a series of buttons allows to categorize email, move it between folders, “sweep” a box, and mark senders as unsafe. A “Quick Views” tab on the left-hand bar allows to take a speedy

glance at documents, photos and shipping updates.

The new system also integrates data from the user’s Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts, similar to the “People” Hub already present on Windows Phone and Windows 8. Skype, now a Microsoft division, will also arrive on the platform at an unannounced future point.

Just like Hotmail you can chat with online contacts straight from your Outlook.com inbox. Click on the messaging icon in the far right corner (the square-shaped smiley face) to open the Messaging pane. You start with a blank pane and you have to click the “Start new conversation” text box to see your online contacts from Messenger and Facebook.

Once you start a conversation in the Messaging app, it will stay in the right hand pane along with the most recent comment until you close the Outlook.com window. Also you can see information about your contacts pulled from social networking accounts such as profile photos and status updates. This information is displayed in the far right column when you view an e-mail, but you will not see this sidebar if you have the messaging pane open. To close the Messaging pane click the “X” in the far right corner.

From Outlook you are also one click away from your contacts, Calendar, and

SkyDrive. To navigate to each different service hover over the Outlook logo in the top left corner of your inbox and select the downward facing arrow; a dropdown bar will appear with Metrostyle tiles you can select to navigate between services.

Driven mad in Jávea…

I am not sure if this is a complaint, the articulation of a worry or a sign of increasing age… but I am really getting tired of some of the drivers who descend on Jávea during the holiday season. Yes, it is great that they come, but if they can’t drive and have the manners of a fish (short attention span and total inability to remember where they are going) I just wish they would leave their cars behind.

In this last week, I have been undertaken twice, cut in front of countless times, attacked from side turnings, trapped behind cars in first gear and crept up on by idiots trying to tailgate in my slipstream - possibly in an effort to use my air-pull to save their petrol (which in view of the fuel prices is at least understandable).

I saw a picture the other day of Boadicea mowing down everything in her way with two sharp scythes sticking out from the side of her chariot… I am thinking of asking my friendly mechanic if my old estate could be converted.

It is little better in supermarket car-parks where cars are left straddling two slots and in the port, one bike takes up a full Car space… At least there is parking back in the Arenal, now that the paving is finished and the marble balustrade is prettier than what was there before. It is also good news that the footpath along Cala Blanca towards Portixol will be opened… not least as it will be an escape route from vehicles.

Does anyone believe that the car-park spaces currently masquerading as restaurant patios will finally be restored? Most of these restaurants have a right to a certain amount of outside space, but, even though I love business opportunism, I do think that too many have gone too far. It is unfair on other businesses if your customers have to park in front of their premises because there is no room in front of yours. The new rule is supposed to be in force across Jávea from the 1st May, but I am not holding my breath. The businesses that have paid for their outside space will doubtless be crossing their fingers that the unfair advantages of free acquisition will now be ending.

Ooh, I feel better for a good grumble. See you next month when the sun will have warmed my mood, hopefully!

Cooking Instructions Heat oven to 350 F (175 C). Season chicken with spices and place in a roasting pan.

In a bowl, combine remaining ingredients.

Spread mixture over chicken, and marinate for at least an hour.

En Madrid hay tres famosas galerías de arte que forman lo que se conoce como “el triángulo de arte.” (In Madrid there are three famous art galleries which form what is known as the “art triangle.”) ¿Alguien ha oído hablar de esto? (Has anyone heard of this?)

ROYANNE: Yo, sí. (I have.)

Uno de los más famosos museos de pintura en España es el Museo Reina Sofía en Madrid. (One of the most famous art galleries in Spain is the Queen Sofia Museum in Madrid.) Aún no lo hemos visitado. (We haven’t visited it yet.) ¿Nos cuentas un poco sobre el museo? (Could you tell us a little about the museum?)

CATHY: Sí, por supuesto.

(Yes, of course.) Su nombre oficial es el Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía pero su nombre es abreviado coloquialmente a Museo Reina Sofía. ( Its official name is the Queen Sofia National Museum Art Centre, but it is abbreviated and commonly known as the Queen Sofia Museum.) El edificio principal del museo es el antiguo Hospital General de Madrid, construido a finales del siglo dieciocho. (The main building of the museum is what was the old Madrid General Hospital, built at the end of the eighteenth century.) En 1980 empezaron unas renovaciones y adiciones extensas. ( For decades the painting, together with innumerable preparatory sketches, was kept in the MOMA museum in New York and arrived in Spain in 1981.) Ellen's Favorite Beach Town in Panama

By Erica Mills Coronado, Panama, is a relaxed community. Only an hour from Panama City, this coastal town—now popular with expats—was once a vacation getaway for Panamanians, who came from miles around to sun themselves on the black- and white-sanded beach and swim in the Pacific Ocean.

But as easygoing as this growing town is, there’s more going on here than you might initially expect. American Ellen Cook, who has lived here for three years with her husband, John, says that they are never at a loss for something to do.

Coronado has always been one of the most well-developed resort towns in Panama, but in the last few years, Ellen says she has seen it flourish.

"There used to be just one supermarket and now there are three 24-hour supermarkets," she says."One is a general store. There are three malls going up and we have a department store, a Novey (a popular Panamanian home improvement chain). And there are five huge hardware/tile stores in about a 10-mile radius."

No matter your income, Ellen says, you can afford to enjoy yourself in Coronado thanks to the low cost of living. (Unlike many of the popular beach towns in the U.S.): "There are people here with a lot of money. And then there are people like us who come here because they don’t have a lot of money. But you’ll see both kinds."

Currently, Ellen and John live on less than $1,500 a month. That includes groceries, household help, utilities, gas for their car, and Internet. They also get out to a restaurant at least once a week, taking advantage of Panama’s pensionado program—a program that mandates discounts to all qualified retirees. A good-quality meal sets them back about $25.

The growing Coronado community, made up of both expats and Panamanians, provides plenty of opportunity to socialize. He is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, holds a Diploma from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a Diploma in Child Health Surveillance. He opened his private practice in Jávea in 2001.

Dr Semler is fluent in English, Spanish and French and has a working knowledge of Dutch.

Dear doctor, I would like to ask you about my tongue. It has always been a bit patchy with red areas which were all over my tongue. Small only, like a 10centimo coin maybe and with a ragged border. Recently though I think there are more of these patches on one side only and they seem to be bigger.

My wife said it might be thrush but I do not know why I should have thrush in the first place. It does not hurt and I can swallow all right. I am 61y old and generally fit.

Dear Walter from Jalón, it is always difficult to make a diagnosis of some skin change from a distance, obviously you would want to see it. The surface of your tongue counts as skin as well, of course. I think what you describe there happing to your tongue is a phenomenon called geographic

tongue.

The name refers to the appearance of the lining of the tongue: with those patches it looks like a map of some well tended park land. The patches are typically a bit redder than the tongue normally is and have very well defined borders. The edges are usually very irregular but stand up clearly from the surrounding tongue surface.

Geographic tongue is harmless, it is not an illness in itself or sign of an illness anywhere else in the body. It is not very common but often runs in families.

Now you say that the patches seem to have shifted all to one side of your tongue, leaving the other side normal looking, I assume.

Again, that can happen with geographic tongue and is nothing to worry about. The cause for this has to do with the papillae which coat our tongues. They are the organs of sense telling

us about the different tastes we perceive. In your condition, the geographic tongue, these papillae disappear from the tongue giving rise to the patchy appearance. After some time they grow back again and the once red patch looks normal again.

Why they suddenly all go on one side only is not really known. But, again, it is not of concern. And there is certainly no need for any form of treatment.

Now your wife mentions thrush as a cause for your tongue to appear patchy. Thrush related patches are white or grey and the are usually much smaller. They stand proud of the tongue´s surface and can be scraped of with the edge of a spoon. Do not use a knife to try to remove them, you might hurt yourself. Very painful.

Thrush can occur in apparently healthy people. It can be a sign of diabetes, it can be related to using antibiotics or certain inhalers given for the treatment of asthma.

In this context I would like to mention one quite serious change to the tongue´s surface. I mean small white shallow ulcers which do not hurt. They can occur on the sides of the tongue and also on the top surface, more rarely on the bottom of the tongue.

They just sit there and as they do not hurt we are not aware of them

until by chance we see them. These have to be taken very serious indeed and really ought to be shown to the doctor. Often they are the beginning of tongue cancer and must be treated as soon as possible. They are more common in smokers or people who drink too much, spirits in particular.

There is a much more common type of tongue ulcer, almost everybody will have had one or more already. These are the so called aphthous ulcers and they always hurt. And hurt they do quite badly, often making it difficult to eat or drink. Luckily they are otherwise harmless and not cancerous. They tend to disappear after very few days.

In any case, a white spot on the tongue that does not disappear after more than two weeks should always be shown to a doctor.

Taxing times, burning questions Asset reporting seminar in Jávea answers expats' tax questions

WITH over 100 expatriates crammed into the Casa de Cultura – which could have been filled three times at least – the recent asset reporting information seminar organised by Jávea Foreign Residents' Helpdesk offered an opportunity to ask the experts about this latest taxation minefield.

Gloria Diego from Lex Tax and Christina Brady from Blacktower Financial Management responded to questions in English, while councillor for foreign affairs Óscar Antón presented the session.

Firstly, Antón stressed that reporting assets held outside Spain did not automatically mean the holder would be taxed on them – the idea behind the reporting law was so that the authorities in Spain were aware of the exact extent of all residents' wealth.

Having assured all those present that there was no such thing as a 'stupid question' – better to feel a bit silly than to make a very costly mistake on Form 720 – Gloria and Christina proceeded to answer all queries presented by the audience, many of which were as follows.

What if I have €49,000 in assets in another country, such as the UK? Or €51,000?

There are three categories of 'reportable' assets. You must declare each individual asset you hold in those categories for which the total value is €50,000 or above.

The €50,000 lower limit applies to each separate category, so if you have a bank account with €49,000, a portfolio of shares valued at €49,000 and a property you bought for no more than €49,000, you do not have to report these on Form 720. However, you should speak with your individual tax advisor as it is better to disclose an asset unnecessarily than omit to do so when you should have done – the fines payable are prohibitive.

Can I appeal if I think I've been unfairly fined?

Yes – the administrative procedure for imposing fines can be appealed, in order to protect taxpayers' rights.

How will the Spanish tax authorities actually know if I don't report something?

Spain's tax department, Hacienda, and overseas tax authorities – including HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) – are in contact with each other and can verify your details at the click of a button. There's nowhere to hide and if you try, you could get fined.

How do I fill in Form 720? Do I just print and handwrite it?

No – the form must be completed electronically, and if you submit a handwritten one, this will be considered 'incorrect reporting' or 'failure to report', and you will be fined accordingly. You, personally, cannot fill in the form unless you have a digital signature, and it is very unlikely you have, although your tax advisor or gestor will. Check with them first, because you may need to find one who does indeed have a digital signature.

I bought a flat in the UK about 10 years ago for €70,000, but it's now only worth about €45,000, if that.

You have to declare the acquisition value on properties – other fixed assets such as car and boats do not need to be declared on Form 720. So in your case, you must declare €70,000 for the flat, even if you have a mortgage on it and even if you're in negative equity because the mortgage is worth more than the flat.

I have a joint bank account in the UK with my brother and sister, which contains €100,000. As my share is only €33,333, I won't have to declare it, will I? Yes, and you should declare the full sum of money held in the account, or €100,000, and if your brother and sister live in Spain they should also declare €100,000 each.

How much can I get fined?

It's not just assets in your home, or native, country that you have to report – Spanish people with assets abroad have to declare theirs, too. You should declare your worldwide assets, wherever they're held.

I have a house in Spain and spend about five months of the year here – otherwise I'm in the UK. You only have to report your assets via Form 720 if you are a Spanish resident for tax purposes, generally meaning you spend 183 days or more a year here. If you spend your time between two or more countries, check with your tax advisor as to where you are legally liable for tax.

Surely I'm already taxed on my overseas assets through the dual tax agreement between Spain and the UK? The dual tax agreement is designed so that you do not get taxed on the same asset twice. PARIZA, female, Shelter since 23.09.2011 Podenco, DOB 15.09.2010 – 53 cm Can a podenco smile when she has been tied to our gate? Yes, but not out of happiness! Pariza has an overbite, which makes her face very funny and almost look like a shark. But she is healthy and nothing seems to bother her at all. Pariza is very outgoing and active. She loves to play and an active family would do her good. Other dogs and bigger children will not be any problem for her, the more the merrier!

PRIDE, male, Shelter since 05.06.2012 Podenco, DOB 05.04.2012 – Young dog Pride and his brother were thrown over our fence and their mother was tied to the gate, but she escaped.

Pride is a nice male, he is super playful, would be good for a family as he could live with other dogs and even other animals.

Of course he needs to learn a lot about the life outside our shelter. Pride is waiting for somebody who can give him a lot of attention and also the appropriate training.

Shark has got a pair of giant ones. He too was just running about on our plot. He was clean, he wore a collar and he was behaving very friendly. Shark is very clever and he would surely like to learn more. If his new owners invested some effort in his education he would in any case become a super dog.

WILLO, male, Shelter since 17.08.2010 Pointer Podenco Mix, DOB 15.08 2008 – 60 cm It took us 3 days of patient cajoling until we succeeded in touching Willo. But then he walked very obediently with us. Now he is just nice and very affectionate. He also likes other dogs but he is always very cautious in contacting them which makes him very likeable. Willo would be a good dog for a quiet family who would give him much love.

The construction of the second lot of isolation kennels has now started. This is being funded by the very generous donation of a car from Javea Autos which was raffled by Pat McCue of High Street Heaven.

We thank both of them for their generosity and time spent in raising such a fantastic sum which allowed us to build these kennels.
