A message from our Patron
It is with great pleasure, as Patron, to be in a position to be able to welcome you to the third Swansea International Jazz Festival. Following on from the successful events of 2014 & 2015, Dave Cottle has again worked tirelessly in making this an event of which Swansea can be proud of. We are extremely grateful for the generous financial aid and support given to the event this year by the Arts Council of Wales and Prescott Jones Insurance Solutions, plus all the venues hosting events, the City and County of Swansea and the University of Wales. Many thanks to the Swansea Jazzland members for their hard work in promotion and disseminating publicity as well as their assistance over the festival weekend.
I am looking forward to being at the Festival this year and we hope to build further on the success of the first two festivals to create an event that will continue to be an annual event in the UK jazz calendar. Enjoy some great music!
Sir Karl Jenkins CBE B.Mus FRAM LRAM

His range and brilliance have made him a “first call” for studio and live work since his precocious arrival on the scene more than thirty years ago. His recorded catalogue is immense. He has made over thirty albums as leader and co-leader alone, and the list of his session and side-man work includes Bjork, Bryan Ferry, Michel LeGrande, Clare Teale, Westlife, Jools Holland and Jamie Cullum. He has toured and played residencies with such diverse and demanding figures as Ruby Braff, Freddie Hubbard, Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Ken Peplowski, Harry Allen and Conte Candoli. In British jazz, the young Barnes was recognized – and hired – by the established greats of the time: Stan Tracy, John Dankworth, Kenny Baker, Bob Wilber, and Humphrey Lyttelton. But he is equally respected for his longstanding and fruitful collaborations with contemporaries such as David Newton, Bruce Adams, and Martin Taylor. Alan Barnes’s unique musicianship, indefatigable touring, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz. He has received over 25 British Jazz Awards, most recently in 2014 for clarinet, and has twice been made BBC Jazz Musician of the Year. The octet will be playing straight ahead arrangements of well known jazz compositions as well as excerpts from some of Alan’s Jazz Suites: The Marbella suite, The Sherlock Holmes Suite and A Jazz Christmas Carol included in the sets.

In 1965 Pee Wee joined James Brown and soon came up with the first pure hardcore funk hit Cold Sweat following it up with 26 others and served Brown as MD until 1969. In the 1970s, as arranger and producer of CTI-Kudu records, he was responsible for the hits by Esther Phillips, George Benson, Hank Crawford and many others. In 1979 he began a long relationship with Van Morrison and reformed the JB horns with Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker.
American saxophone legend Pee Wee Ellis is most famous as the man who refined the sound of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, and has every right to the title The Man who invented Funk.

MARK mondesir jazz drum WORKSHOP The Dylan Thomas Centre 10:30am - 12pm Mark Mondesir is undoubtedly one of the finest drummers the UK has ever produced, and has gained the respect and admiration of musicians the world over. A unique talent, he combines technical velocity, complexity and dexterity with an awesome inventiveness and imaginative dynamism, all grounded in an instinctive feel for groove. He has known and worked with Julian for over twenty years, and has made an inspiring and essential contribution to all his projects, bringing a musical integrity and diversity that is, quite simply, humbling. He is comfortable in any genre, from jazz to rock to funk to fusion and has collaborated with a range of international artists, including John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul, Steve Gadd, John Scofield, Jeff Beck, Kevin Eubanks and Brian Ferry, as well as British musicians Courtney Pine, Andy Sheppard, Tony Remy, Dennis Rollins, Cleveland Watkiss, and his brother, Mike. The late Kenny Ball was a legend, a genuine institution and the most successful jazz trumpet player this side of the Atlantic. His songs always put a smile on your face and happily Kenny’s music lives on through his son Keith. The Kenny Ball band has always been of the highest calibre when it comes to the members and to retain top quality musicians. We’d like to say a big thankyou to the band’s fans for their kind words of encouragement that we’ve had at all of our concerts over the last two years. It is mainly because of this feedback from the people who supported the band for over 50 years that I knew I had to carry on.

Darius Brubeck, pianist, composer and Fulbright Professor of Jazz Studies, grew up in California and Connecticut. He was the Director of the Centre for Jazz & Popular Music at the University of KwaZuluNatal, Durban, South Africa from 1989 until 2005, when he moved to London and established the Darius Brubeck Quartet. With its unique three-dimensional programming of original compositions, Dave Brubeck hits and South African jazz is a strong draw. Playing to consistently sold-out houses at regional festivals and clubs in Europe and the UK, their acoustic brand of jazz is melodic, spontaneous, rhythmic and audience-friendly. Reaction to the Darius Brubeck Quartet is enthusiastic wherever they go. Duncan Heining in Jazzwise magazine described the group’s performance at the 2012 Scarborough Festival as his “gig of the year”.
Tim Dickeson, writing this year in the same magazine says, ‘ the combination of Brubeck & O’Higgins is certainly among the best piano/sax partnerships in the UK.’ Darius, Matt and Wesley have played together since 2006 and concerts have featured various top line sax players, mainly Dave O’Higgins, Mike Rossi and most recently Brandon Allen. Tenor saxophonist Dave O’Higgins, one of the UK’s leading players, also plays in the band “Brubecks Play Brubeck”, which specializes in Dave Brubeck compositions. Dave is featured on their new CD, ‘Cathy’s Summer’ with eight original compositions by Darius, two by Duke Ellington and a 1931 standard by Bing Crosby.

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) is Britain’s longest-running organisation for young people up to 25 playing big-band jazz. Formed 50 years ago to fill a gap in jazz education, the charity’s mission is to perform exceptional music to excite audiences and engage with young people of all backgrounds around the country. Young people are at the heart of everything NYJO does: the performing band is a world-class orchestra whose members are young enough to inspire and be identified with by audiences and children. It offers unique opportunities for its members to perform nationally and internationally and to promote jazz to the widest possible audience whilst they themselves are at the beginning of their musical careers. NYJO also offers its members and those involved in its educational programmes the chance to be involved in a unique musical community
of likeminded, passionate, talented young musicians at a pivotal point in their personal development. The main performing orchestras features 23 musicians, most of whom go on to join the profession and has helped launched the careers of many of the UK’s most renowned jazz musicians including Guy Barker and Amy Winehouse. It performs around 40 times annually throughout the UK and recent highlights have included the yearly residency at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club, performing with Gregory Porter at Buckingham Palace, a tour of Germany and England with the German Youth Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO), a televised performance at the BBC Proms and repeat appearances at the EFG London Jazz Festival. NYJO has over 40 albums to its credit and ‘NYJO FIFTY’, a celebratory double-album was released to wide acclaim in November 2015.
The charity also operates the weekly NYJO Academy (which contains several training bands and a vocal ensemble for young musicians of different abilities) as well as a nationwide series of inspirational workshops and educational events in association with the performance programme, intended to educate and inspire young people with a love of music and jazz. “Don’t believe the hype: if you seriously want to hear the best of what’s to come, check out the many NYJO projects… The National Youth Jazz Orchestra [is] a vibrant, diverse collective of bands that give voice to all that’s different, young and exciting in Brit jazz.” Jazzwise Magazine, Who to Look Out For in 2016.

360 10-piece jazz/funk band featuring Hamish Stuart and Malcolm Duncan original members of The Average White Band!
‘360’ is a very special band featuring original Average White Band members Hamish Stuart and Malcolm ‘Molly’ Duncan delivering their fantastic music through the iconic album ‘Soul Searching’. Hamish Stuart : Vocals & Guitars Malcolm (Molly) Duncan : Tenor Sax Adam Phillips : Guitar & Vocals Steve Pearce : Bass & Vocals Ross Stanley : Keyboards Neil Sidwell : Trombone Tom Walsh : Trumpet Tommy Lawrence : Alto Sax Andy Caine : Guitar & Vocals Ian Thomas : Drums
Forty years ago Hamish Stuart had just written two songs for the next Average White Band album Soul Searching. The first song was ‘Queen Of My Soul’, on which saxman Molly Duncan blew one of his most memorable solos and drummer Steve Ferrone played a major part. The second song, A Love Of Your Own, was co-written with Californian singer / songwriter Ned Doheny and went on to become a multi covered R ’n’ B classic, covered by Shalimar’s Howard Hewitt, Milly Jackson and many others. The album recorded in early January 1976 is now considered a classic in AWB’s history and legendary producer Arif Mardin considered Soul Searching to be their finest hour. Fast forward to January 2014 when Molly and Hamish got together in Los Angeles to play at Steve Ferrone’s induction into the drummers Hall Of Fame - the first time the three had played together since 1987. The musical experience was so enjoyable for all that it rekindled their great musical relationship and they decided to do it again as soon as schedules allowed. The schedule allowed them to play three shows at London’s Ronnie Scott’s followed by one at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall. Under the moniker ‘360’ the 10-piece band will perform the ’Soul Searching’ album in it’s entirety, along with other AWB standards. Those years since 1987 have been pretty fruitful for them all. Steve played with Duran Duran followed by a long spell with Eric Clapton before becoming the drummer in Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers. Molly has been in much demand as a session player and soloist all over Europe and Hamish joined Paul McCartney’s band in the late 80’s/90’s on record breaking world tours. He has since peppered his own solo career touring with Ringo’s All-Starr’s, writing and touring with his own band and producing albums for an array of artists. This reunion of three players who have achieved so much together and separately promises to be a memorable event, and a first here in Swansea!

Berry Ray A Musician. A Gentleman. A Character. Irreplaceable.
One of the great characters on the Swansea music scene, Berry Ray passed away earlier this year. He was treasurer and compere at Swansea Jazzland, but had also performed in a number of bands over many years, entertaining on the saxophone and with his distinctive Louis Armstrong-style vocals. Berry was an electrician by trade and worked for AWCO (Aluminium Wire & Cable Company) and the Post Office in Swansea, as well as serving in the Merchant Navy. Swansea Jazzland Chairman Dave Cottle, who played with him for around 30 years, said: "His dad Cliff Ray was a sax player who ran dance bands and Berry learned to play sax in his dad’s band. He was at sea, but came back in 1965 and he regularly played at the Top Rank with the Jeff Murphy Band and the Johnny Francis Band in the 1960s and early 1970s. He formed his own band, New Formation, and the first time I played with him was around 1977/78. The band had residences at the Dragon and Dolphin hotels. He also played with the Constellation Big Band in the late 70s and the 80s. In 1985 I formed a band with Berry on sax and Martin Webber on drums. Over the years we played at over 1,000 wedding parties alone. He was a great friend of mine and helped me immensely at the Jazz club for over 20 years." RIP Dear friend, gone but never forgotten! Dave Cottle.

Welcome to The
Swigg
Located in the heart of Swansea Marina, next to the Waterfront Museum, SA1. The Swigg is a cosy Café by day and a sophisticated wine bar by night, serving top quality delicatessen, elegant wines, refreshing cocktails, smooth coffee and more. The bar’s architecture features a modest level of maritime reference, as well as paying attention to Swansea’s heritage as an industrial hinterland of global significance. The name, ‘Swigg’ mimics the name of a buoy, in the sea of Swansea Bay called ‘South West Inner Green Grounds’. The Swigg will cater for the substantial public footfall of its surrounding area, offering something a little different and unique to the people of Swansea. We will open for breakfast and remain open throughout the day and into the evening (7.30am-11pm).
