A message from our Patron

It is with great pleasure, as Patron, to be in a position to be able to welcome you to the second Swansea International Jazz Festival. Following the successful inaugural event of 2014, Dave Cottle has again worked tirelessly in making this an event of which Swansea can be proud. We are extremely grateful for the generous financial aid and support given to the event by many bodies and individuals: the Arts Council of Wales, Swansea City Council, Prescott Jones Insurance Solutions, the University of Wales Trinity St David for their support at the Dylan Thomas Centre, the many venues around the maritime quarter for staging events, the help of Swansea Jazzland members for their hard work

in promotion and disseminating publicity as well as their assistance over the festival weekend. We are hoping to build on the success of last year to create an event that will continue to be an annual event in the UK jazz calendar.

Enjoy some great music!

Dr. Karl Jenkins CBE B.Mus FRAM LRAM

Welcome from Dave Cottle It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the second Swansea International Jazz Festival. Last years inaugural Festival got off to a flying start with around 10,000 visitors enjoying the combination of ticketed and free events, in a superb and compact waterfront location with brilliant sunshine! Swansea boasts a wide range of accessible car parks, hotels and guest houses in and around the Maritime Quarter. National Bus and Railway stations are close to the festival site. Thanks to the financial support from our sponsors & partners we have musicians and bands coming to Swansea from the USA and Europe along with many of the best British Jazz ensembles. The Ticketed concerts will be held in the Dylan Thomas Centre and National Waterfront Museum, with 8 additional venues hosting the Fringe Festival. Please remember to purchase tickets for the top shows as we do need to balance the books and wouldn’t be able to offer such a huge free fringe festival without selling tickets for the main shows! The 2015 Festival welcomes bands from New Orleans (The Session), Holland (Busquitos), and Italy (Radio Londra with Jim Mullen). Founder member of the ‘Average White Band’ Hamish Stuart brings his great funky 8 piece band to the Festival and will play hits such as ‘Pick up the Pieces’ and ‘Atlantic Avenue’. The fantastic Jive Aces bring their brand of exciting Jump/Jive music, plus the amazing ‘Monsters on a Leash’ are a 10 piece band with the cream of London’s top session players featuring the music of Tower of Power. The festival fringe has over 30 free events to enjoy and there are jazz workshops with Gareth Williams (piano), Steve Waterman (Trumpet) and Gary Potter & Felix Bellingham (Guitar) which are also free and players of all instruments are welcome. Pianist with Ronnie Scott for many years, John Critchinson brings a stella line up to get the festival underway which includes Shakatak vocalist Jacqui Hicks and saxophone legend Art Themen. The Laurence Cottle Quintet features the amazing Nigel Hitchcock on sax and Steve Fishwick on trumpet. The Piano is prominent with Geoff Eagles and Gareth Williams respectively on Saturday afternoon and for Gypsy guitar fans they don’t come much better than Gary Potter. Robert Fowler’s Gerry Mulligan Concert Big Band features the music of Gerry Mulligan and on Sunday vocalist Lee Gibson will be singing with the Capital City Jazz Orchestra. So much to look forward to and if we don’t bump into each other over the weekend come along to Swansea Jazzland where we continue to present the best of International & UK based jazz musicians every Wednesday night in Swansea! LAURENCE COTTLE QUINTET The Dylan Thomas Centre 7:00pm Laurence Cottle - Bass Nigel Hitchcock - Saxophone Steve Fishwick - Trumpet Gareth Williams - Piano Drums - Chris Higginbottom Swansea-born Laurence Cottle is an electric bass guitar master, a highly respected big band leader, an in-demand producer and a prolific composer. He is enormously admired among electric bass guitarists as an instrumentalist who has successfully navigated a career path through rock music and jazz. His musical journey began at an early age as a very youthful trombonist playing traditional jazz in his father’s band. The young Cottle switched to electric bass guitar in response to changing tastes, and his early influences were creative rock bassists like John Entwhistle and Jack Bruce. Then came a watershed moment in 1976 when Laurence Cottle heard Jaco Pastorius for the first time. The influence of Jaco Pastorius upon bass guitarists has been incontrovertibly profound, but for Laurence it was a lifechanging experience. “Hearing that first album completely changed the way I approached the instrument”, says Laurence.

Since then, Laurence Cottle has established himself as the UK’s foremost exponent of the Pastorius repertoire, balancing a jazz-focused career with session work and composing for television. His jazz projects have included producing albums for Claire Martin, Jim Mullen and Mark Nightingale, and recording with Django Bates, Tim Garland and Gerard Presencer. The Quintet features 5 of the UK’s top jazz musicians for a rip roaring set of jazz!

DAVE JONES QUARTET The Dylan Thomas Centre 2:30pm Dave Jones - Piano Lee Goodall - Saxes Ashley John Long - Bass Kevin Lawlor - Drums Led by pianist/composer Dave Jones, this particular line-up formed in 2011 for a tour of Arts Centres in Ireland, and then released the highly acclaimed ‘Resonance’ album in 2012. This was followed in late 2014 by their latest album LIVE at AMG, which fea-tures tracks from ‘Resonance’ and also from The Dave Jones Trio ‘Journeys’ album (2010), which was the London Evening Standard’s Jazz CD of the week, shortly after its release. The Quartet’s style is melodic and accessible contemporary jazz (based on Dave’s compositions) with influences from the worlds of classical and folk music. Their individual projects with other bands and artists have seen them tour in the USA, South America, Australia, India, and Europe, but this weekend they’re very happy to be playing much nearer to home.

THE SESSION - from New Orleans USA The Session is a modern New Orleans jazz group formed by five of the most note-worthy members of the crescent city’s ‘up and coming’ generation of younger musicians. All five members first crossed paths playing as sidemen to some of the cities formost musical names. On any given night in New Orleans you’ll find one, usually more, of the band’s members playing with names such as Jason Marsalis, Herlin Ri-ley, Shannon Powell and the Delfaeyo Marsalis big band. It was a shared desire to learn and attempt to follow in the footsteps of the city’s elder statesmen that brought The Session together. In February of 2013 The Session released its debut album, aptly titled This is Who We Are, as it is a culmination of over two years of practicing and gigging together. After an extremely well received performance at the 2013 New Orleans Jazz Festival, the band looks set to begin to turn heads around the jazz world.

The Dylan Thomas Centre - 4:30pm

Darrian Douglas, Drumset:

James Partridge, Saxophone:

A native of Jackson Mississippi, moved to New Orleans in 2007 he was soon taken in by his adopted city and began playing with the likes of the Ellis Marsalis’ Quartet, Germaine Bazzle and Irvin Mayfield.

Born in London, England, Partridge started playing classical clarinet and was a member of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain. He moved to the states after receiving a scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music. After spending every summer break working in New Orleans he relocated there after graduation in 2010. He can be seen playing with the likes of Shannon Powell, Jason Marsalis and Irvin Mayfield’s New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.

Jasen Weaver, Bass: Having taken up the Double Bass at the age of 11 he was quickly accepted into the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra and by age 14 was attending the prestigious New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). By the time he graduated, in 2012, with a major in Jazz Studies from the University of New Orleans.

HAMISH STUART OCTET

Hamish Stuart : Vocals & Guitar Adam Phillips Guitar & vocals : Ash Soan - drums : Steve Pearce - bass Graham Harvey - keyboards : Tom Walsh - trumpet : Nigel Hitchcock - sax Neil Sidwell - trombone Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Hamish Stuart shot to fame in the 1970’s as the falsetto voice of The Average White Band, his distinctive songwriting and guitar style paving the way for the band’s worldwide success. When the AWB split in 1982, Hamish went on to tour and record with an array of soul stars including Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, George Benson and Chaka Khan, for whom he wrote the No.1 chart hit Whatcha Gonna Do For Me?

STEVE WATERMAN QUARTET The Dylan Thomas Centre - 6:30pm Steve Waterman : Trumpet & Flugelhorn Dave Cottle : Piano Alun Vaughan : Bass Paul Smith : Drums Steve is one of the top British jazz trumpet players both at home and on the international scene. He began his career while studying at Trinity College Of Music, and since then has worked regularly on the British, European and International jazz scene. He is professor of Jazz Trumpet at Trinity College of Music in London and visiting Jazz Trumpet specialist at The Royal Northern College Of Music and The Welsh College Of Music And Drama. Steve runs his own Annual Contemporary Big Band Jazz Weekend with saxophonist Alan Barnes and bassist Alun Vaughan, and also teaches on many summer jazz courses and has conducted numerous Trumpet master classes and workshops ranging in size from small groups to big bands throughout the UK and in Spain, Finland, Latvia, South Africa and Cuba. Steve has won numerous jazz awards over the years, and was again this year the winner of the British Jazz Award for the UK’s Best Jazz Trumpet 2014.

In 1986 David Sanborn invited Stuart to record with him and they released the live album Straight From The Heart on which Hamish sang Al Green’s Love and Happiness now a Hamish Stuart Band standard. The following year he was back in the studio teaming up with former band member and drummer Steve Ferrone and together they recorded the Easy Pieces album. In 1988 Paul McCartney asked Hamish to join his band and he went on to tour and record with the legendary Beatle for six years, recording 2 studio and 3 live albums in the process before embarking on his solo project. Since leaving McCartney’s band, Stuart has been working on new material of his own with his newly formed group The Hamish Stuart Band. He still finds time to work on projects such as Quincy Jones’ 64th birthday celebration event in Switzerland last year and most recently accepting Bonnie Raitt’s invitation to duet with her on stage at her end of tour show in London. Sooner or Later, Stuart’s first Compass release, showcases his inimitable vocal style and reflects both his own personality and immensely diverse interests and influences. There are haunting, romantic ballads like Care For You and Same Old Moon included among taut, sophisticated slices of urban funk like It Is What It Is and Midnight Rush. In recent months, the Hamish Stuart Band has blown the roof off of U.K. venues including Ronnie Scotts in London. With the talents of Ian Thomas on drums, Steve Pearce on bass and Jody Linscott on percussion, the band generates a truly ferocious groove. Although it is becoming impossible to book a seat at their monthly gig at the 606 Club in Chelsea, England, fans old and new are always guaranteed a good time and often a bonus from guest friends such as Bonnie Raitt, Brian Auger, Jim Mullen and Molly Duncan. Nostalgia is not the main goal of the shows. It’s hearing a new and soulful band firing on all six cylinders.
