A message from our Patron Neges o Sir Karl Jenkins
It is with great pleasure, as Patron, to be in a position to be able to welcome you to the fourth annual Swansea International Jazz Festival. Following the success of the first 3 events, Dave Cottle has again worked tirelessly in making this an event of which Swansea can be proud and the biggest to date! We are extremely grateful for the generous financial support given to the event from the Arts Council of Wales and City & County of Swansea Council and the sponsorship from Prescott Jones Insurance Solutions. Plus support from many local businesses, the University of Wales Trinity St David at the Dylan Thomas Centre, the Dylan Thomas Theatre and the many venues around the
4
Maritime Quarter for staging events. The hard work of Swansea Jazzland committee and members in promotion and disseminating publicity as well as their assistance over the festival weekend. We are hoping to build on the success of previous years to create an event that will continue to be an annual event in the UK jazz calendar. Enjoy some great music!

^ INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL OF WALES - SWANSEA GWYL JAZZ RHYNGWLADOL CYMRU - ABERTAWE
Welcome from Dave Cottle Neges o Dave Cottle
A warm welcome to the fourth Swansea International Jazz Festival. The 2017 festival has 16 venues hosting 56 events this year, the festival has even more venues and events than in previous years and it’s great for the City of Swansea to be hosting the biggest jazz festival in Wales this year. The Maritime Quarter is a fabulous backdrop location for ourww festival and of course there are plenty of accessible car parks and a wide range of hotels and guest houses in the area plus both Swansea bus and Railway stations are close by. It has been a particularly tough time behind the scenes this year, which left a very short lead in time to make all the arrangements and programming. I hope you enjoy the events lined up for this year. Thanks to the financial support from our sponsors and partners we have musicians and bands coming to Swansea from USA and Europe along with many of the best British Jazz ensembles. Please do purchase tickets for the top shows as we do need to balance the books and wouldn’t be able to offer such a huge free fringe festival without selling tickets for the main concerts. The ticketed shows offer a wide variety of different styles and something for everyone and there is plenty of great talent to enjoy on the free fringe events spread all over the Maritime Quarter. I am looking forward to hearing the performance from the South Wales Schools Big band following the workshop Saturday morning. Great to have all the young musicians from Carmarthen, Swansea and Cardiff & Vale Schools all together. There is so much great music to look forward to and if we don’t bump into each other over the weekend please do come along to Swansea Jazzland where we continue to present the best of International and UK based jazz musicians every Wednesday night in Swansea. Have a great weekend!

MIDLAND YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA
The Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra is widely acclaimed as one of the U.K’s top big bands. Its reputation has been founded on a consistently high quality of performance over two decades. In addition, audiences find they are infected by the enjoyment which band members bring to performances, and the excitement which the band generates. These qualities have helped bring the band success in the BBC National Big Band Competition, initially during the eighties winning the Youth Section. MYJO has also been a winner in the Dutch National Big Band Competition, beating adult bands from The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. MYJO has featured in concert with many famous names from the musical world, including Benny Carter, John Dankworth, Bobby Shew, Arturo Sandoval, Bob Florence, Stan Tracey, Jools Holland, and TV chat show host, Michael Parkinson. Many players from MYJO have entered the music profession, and some are becoming well known in their own right. Among these is the now internationally famous trombonist, Mark Nightingale. Several former members of MYJO play regularly for top bands like the BBC Radio Big Band, SLO, and Robbie Williams Big Band.

Stan Tracey was an outstanding figure in the jazz world and always a great favourite in Swansea. His distinguished career spanned six decades of flourishing creativity. He was a highly influential and stimulating musical voice, not only to his peers, but to each successive generation of musicians with whom he worked. This concert celebrates his Octet music and features most of his last Octet, led by his son Clark and with Steve Melling at the piano. To celebrate what would have been Stan Tracey’s 90th birthday, Clark Tracey, who had 35 years working with his father, has been showcasing three of Stan’s groups around the country and tonight we present his Legacy Octet. The Octet, originally formed forty years ago, will perform compositions from various suites, including a selection of Stan’s later music as well as his earlier output dating back to the early 1970s.

JOE STILGOE SONGS ON FILM
Joe Stilgoe is an internationally acclaimed singer, pianist and songwriter with a rich musical heritage (his father is lyricist and entertainer Richard; his mother the opera singer Annabel Hunt). His live shows are a mixture of virtuosic musicianship and breathtaking theatricality, combining on the spot improvisation and the quickest of wits. Joe has toured all around the world with his band and as a solo act, having appeared in jazz clubs from New York to Berlin to Kuala Lumpur, including sell-out runs at legendary London venue Ronnie Scott‘s. He has appeared as featured soloist with orchestras, including the BBC Concert Orchestra, John Wilson Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Northern Sinfonia, Lahti Symphony, and the RTE Orchestra in Dublin. Joe signed to legendary label Candid Records, and released his first album I Like This One in 2008, going on to self-fund his second, We Look To The Stars, in 2012. On the day of release, it went straight to the top of the jazz charts while pulling in rave reviews from the national press and attracting new fans including Tim Minchin, Chris Evans and Sir Michael Parkinson. In 2013, Joe embarked on a project which would complement his love of cinema, Songs on Film, in which he and his remarkable band performed songs written for and inspired by some of the greatest films of the last century. His London Jazz Festival performances of the show were recorded for a live album, released in February 2014. This record, and all of Joe‘s back catalogue, have since been re-released by the prestigious jazz label Linn Records. His first album with Linn, New Songs for Old Souls, was released to 5-star reviews and plaudits in 2015, being named one of the ‚Best Jazz Albums of 2015‘ by The Telegraph. Joe‘s most recent album, Songs on the Film: The Sequel, followed in August 2016. In addition to his own material, Joe has written songs for Samantha Barks, Lianne Carroll and Claire Martin, and collaborated with many diverse performers, including conductor John Wilson and comedian Alexander Armstrong. He works extensively on radio, having hosted BBC Radio 2‘s Friday Night is Music Night, as well as his own show on JazzFM, and appeared on The Now Show and The Horne Section for Radio 4. He scored a high-profile role in High Society, Kevin Spacey and Maria Friedman‘s smash-hit musical at The Old Vic, and has enjoyed several sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, garnering further acclaim and another collection of 5-star reviews on every return. 2017 brings with it exciting plans, including a special performance of Songs on Film at Regent‘s Park Open Air Theatre, more big band shows including a debut at the world famous Snape Proms, a role in a new BBC drama, hosting another episode of Friday Night is Music Night, plus residencies at Ronnie Scotts, Crazy Coqs, and continuing his extensive tour of the UK.

IAN THOMAS DRUMS
Scintillating arrangements of eponymous tunes played by three stalwarts of the international Jazz scene.
Graham Harvey initially started off as a classical pianist, before moving to the USA to study jazz, later returning to the UK to become director of jazz/funk outfit Incognito, before beginning an ongoing stint as pianist for Grammy nominated singer Stacey Kent. He‘s also performed with Stevie Wonder, recorded with George Benson and played with Clark Terry and Warren Vache. Laurence Cottle (born Swansea) is an electric bass guitar master, a highly respected big band leader, an in-demand producer and a prolific composer. He is enormously admired among electric bass guitarists as an instrumentalist who has successfully navigated a career path through rock music and jazz. Ian Thomas is a session drummer from London, born in Cardiff, Wales. Without doubt Ian is one of the UK‘s most sought after and respected session players. Ians musical credits see him playing in diverse musical genres from Big Bands through to working with artists such as Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Sting, Mick Jagger, George Michael, Tom Jones, Seal, Rufus Wainwright, Mike & The Mechanics, Michael Jackson and many others.

TONY O‘MALLEY BAND
Tony O’Malley’s distinctive vocals and funky piano playing have always been key to the sound of UK Soul Pioneers, Kokomo...
20
...these skills come to the fore with his own band, in which he’s accompanied by some of Britain’s brightest young talent: Richie Aikman on guitar, Sonny Winslow on bass and Ally McDougal on the drums. The average age increases when they’re joined by fellow Kokomo founders, the “guitarists’ guitarist” Neil Hubbard, if he’s not on tour with Bryan Ferry, and sax man Mel Collins, if not on duty with King Crimson. The influence of greats like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Richard Tee and Steely Dan is plain to hear in the eight Tony O’Malley CDs. But Tony’s own style, energy and personality shine through in every show, whether on a festival stage or in an intimate jazz club. Throughout the nineteen-eighties, Tony played gigs in small clubs in London and around the UK, Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland, either solo or with fellow musicians, building a following of loyal fans and constantly expanding his repertoire of songs. By 1992, Tony was playing monthly at the 606 Club in Chelsea, working with the cream of British musicians: Pino Palladino, Ian Thomas, Mark Smith, Laurence Cottle, Jeremy Stacey, Andy Newmark (resident in the UK) Mel Collins, Mornington Lockett and Neil Hubbard, to name but a few.

In autumn 2012 Ruby was a guest judge on BBC‘s The Choir: Sing While You Work with choirmaster Gareth Malone, and in 2013 Ruby was a guest judge on BBC‘s Songs of Praise gospel choirs competition. Her major break came in the mid 1980s, when she was asked to join ‘Culture Club‘ at the height of their stardom. Ruby very quickly learned how to deal with the routine of gruelling tour schedules, living out of a suitcase and performing to vast sell-out audiences. An offer of a solo record deal closely followed and she soon signed to Jive Records, part of the Zomba Group. Four albums and a ‘Best of’ compilation album were all released to critical acclaim over the next few years, making Ruby a household name. This period went on to spawn the hits‚ ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, ’If You‘re Ready’ (Come Go With Me) and in the American R’n’B chart, the Number 1 hit single ’It’s Gonna Be Alright’ - one of fewer than ten British records to achieve this! It was at this time that she also released her hit album‚ ’The Motown Songbook’ on which she performed with some of the truly great stars of that era - The Four Tops, The Temptations, Jimmy Ruffin, etc. To date, Ruby has released 17 albums plus the BBC‘s ’Live From Glastonbury’ as well as appearing on releases by the likes of Brian Ferry, UB40, Steve Winwood and Mick Jagger. She is also one of the main singers in Jools Holland’s R&B Orchestra, and features on many tracks on his albums.

THE REMI HARRIS TRIO
Remi Harris is an exciting young guitarist from the UK whose unique style draws inspiration from Gypsy Swing, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Heavy Metal, Electronic and World Music. He has toured worldwide as well as performing at Buckingham Palace, Montreal Jazz Festival, BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall with Jamie Cullum, on BBC 4 Television and live on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3.
LIBERTY STREET BAND
Primarily self taught with the help of his Dad‘s guitar magazines and records, Remi started playing at the age of 7, initially inspired by rock and blues guitarists of the 60s and 70s such as Jimi Hendrix, Peter Green and Jimmy Page. In his late teens he developed an interest in jazz music, in particular artists such as Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery and Stan Getz. Since then he has been growing a reputation for blending all of his influences into his own individual style of playing.

A soulful, emotive singer, she is capable of reducing listeners to tears with her heart-breaking ability to inhabit a lyric or of making an audience jump for joy with her breath-taking vocal virtuosity. What really makes Carroll stand out however is the way that she delivers every song as though she wrote it. A classically trained pianist since she was three, she possesses a true musicality that lifts her interpretations into the realms of art in their own right and to hear her sing even the best known standard or the most hackneyed pop song is to hear that song afresh. In 2010 Liane signed to Quiet Money and released Up and Down featuring Kirk Whalum and the late Kenny Wheeler. Ballads followed in 2013 with arrangements specially written by Los Angeles based, Grammy winning orchestrator Chris Walden. The album was launched during a sell-out five-night residency at London‘s renowned Pizza Express Jazz Club.
Perhaps fewer know about Dudley Moore, pianist — the virtuoso brilliantly exploiting the stylistic possibilities gifted to him by Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson in late night sessions at Peter Cook’s Establishment Club in 1960s Soho, dazzling appearances on BBC TV’s Not Only But Also and the sparkling Decca trio recordings. And perhaps fewer still, Dudley Moore, composer-purveyor of quirky, imaginative jazz originals and the witty music for Bedazzled and 30 Is A Dangerous Age, Cynthia, nuanced movie scores far superior to the movies themselves. In preparing a recording celebrating the music of Dudley, we were tempted to pay homage to his 1960s piano-trio style. After all, Chris, George and I had all been indelibly influenced by the very particular, tight-knit, hard-swinging playing of Dudley, bassist Pete McGurk and drummer Chris Karan. However, whilst exploring the tunes with Paul on trumpet, we began to discover the richness of his compositions and understand a more authentic, and perhaps more revealing way of entering into Dudley’s musical world.

Earth Wind & Fire!
21:15 SUNDAY DYDD SUL 18 Dylan Thomas Centre
ALL FIRED UP!
THE MUSIC OF EARTH, WIND & FIRE ALL FIRED UP! was put together by Tommy Blaize and Derek Green, two of the UK‘s finest vocalists. “After many years of performing the music of ‘Earth, Wind and Fire’ in other tribute bands, it was time we did it for ourselves” said Tommy and Derek. “We’ve loved this music from the first time we heard it, it means so much to us and we wanted to do it for all the right reasons. We’ve been talking about it for years and finally, we’ve put it together. It was important to get a diverse mix of players. We called friends that we’ve worked with and everyone, without hesitation said I’m in!” We got together a small rhythm section featuring Andrew Small on drums, guitarist Tony Remy, the ubiquitous and dexterous pairing of Dave Arch & Pete Murray on keys, Karlos Edwards on percussion and vocals, and bassist Trevor Barry at The Ritz studio in 2015 - we had a blast. We decided not to compromise with the joyous and powerful Earth, Wind & Fire songbook, this band will play these songs with the reverence and burning passion they deserve. Quickly we decided that we needed another guitarist, only one man came to mind, Tim Cansfield, and another percussionist, Jody Linscott! We rehearsed again in June and knew we were onto something special! Now we needed our own horn section to replicate the mighty sound of the Phoenix horns. Powerful trumpeter Tom Walsh was called, he then fixed Paul Booth on saxophones to join the king of cool, Chris Storr on trumpet, and the quiet man of trombone, Barnaby Dickinson completed this monster section.

The tragic news of Maurice White’s passing came as a shock to the world and all involved in our band. With some pushing from our friends we decided there was no better way to honour Maurice than playing his music. We have come together to perform and celebrated the music of Earth, Wind & Fire. We can’t wait, in fact we‘re all fired up! Hey… that sounds like a name of a band if ever I heard one! The songs we’ll be performing include… After The Love Has Gone, Brazilian Rhyme, Boogie Wonderland, Can‘t Hide Love, Can‘t Let Go, Fantasy, Getaway, Got To Get You Into My Life, In The Stone, Jupiter, Let‘s Groove, Rock That, Reasons, Saturday Nite, September, Serpentine Fire, Shining Star, Sing A Song, Star & That‘s The Way Of The World. See you there!
