Fees: This is a resource intensive course, so it costs £8,600. Start date: You can start this course in September.

Teaching and learning You will learn to work with Maya, ZBrush and Photoshop as well as Unreal Development Kit as your core set of tools. The course is taught in a studio style environment predominantly by ex-industry professionals, and you will benefit from regular guest speakers from the gaming industry. You can also spend your third year in an optional industry placement, which really sets you apart when you graduate.

Duration and mode of study: Full time: three years or four years (Placement year is optional).

About the course This degree concentrates on the production of art related assets for computer games and you will learn traditional core skills alongside industry standard practice in modelling, texturing and animation. You will create game content and have the opportunity to develop your understanding of games as a visual medium and the technical theory of game art production.

What you will cover We have consulted heavily with the Games Industry to ensure the content is both up to date and relevant. Our teaching team largely consists of industry professionals who will guide you through the course so that you can apply for a range of specialist art roles. You will learn traditional core art skills alongside industry standard practice and distil this knowledge into real-time worlds. Additional information The University of Derby is an official academic partner of Epic and the Unreal Development Kit (UDK). You will learn to develop your skills with world-class toolsets such as the Unreal Engine. Students can become members of the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance allowing them to use Microsoft products at home.

Your career At the end of this programme you will be able to create and animate 3D art in a real time environment using the very latest techniques. There’s a wide variety of opportunities for skilled games professionals, from small start-up independent developers to triple ‘A’ titles both in the UK and abroad.
