The Greater Denton Arts Council proudly presents the 31st annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. The exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. Assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts allowed for the expansion of this national exhibition to include international artists in 2017. The exhibition call drew over 1,000 submissions from 27 states and 8 countries around the world. Juror Perry A. Price selected 70 works for exhibition at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center featuring works of the following media: ceramic, glass, paper, fiber, metal, wood, mixed media, and other non-traditional media.

Perry A. Price is Executive Director of Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in Houston, Texas. His interest in the craft, design, and material culture was developed early by his late aunt – herself both a potter and a German auto racing mechanic. Price received a BA in the History of Art from Johns Hopkins University and a MA in Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies, a partnership between the State University of New York at Oneonta and the New York State Historical Association. Prior to joining HCCC, he served as Director of Education at the American Craft Council in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Price was responsible for developing and presenting outreach programs to foster thoughtful leadership and cultivate critical thinking on the field of contemporary craft. He previously served as curator of exhibitions and collections for Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts, where he developed and oversaw all aspects of the New England craft museum’s exhibitions and collections initiatives. He is a scholar of contemporary studio craft, material culture, decorative arts, and design and is a frequent contributor to publications and periodicals including American Craft and the Mohawk Maker Quarterly.

The privilege of being asked to jury such a prestigious exhibition such as 2018’s Materials: Hard + Soft is a source of excitement and dread. Of the hundreds and hundreds of unique, exciting, and remarkable submissions how is it possible to select and include only a fraction of the talent? For my own humble contribution to this significant exhibition series, I am drawn to those works which undoubtedly speak skill of their makers, yes, but most importantly ask questions of the viewer and challenge our understanding of an object’s conception and creation. Any juried exhibition is only as strong as the work entered, and it is a testament to the reputation and value of this series to the field seen in the remarkable pieces on view. It was my pleasure to be a part of it. Perry Allen Price Executive Director Houston Center for Contemporary Craft
