THE ORIGINAL STORY OF THE HOUSE This is a project that we did in the first semester of the study year 20162017. The project was for the subject Architectural Projects 4 on the University of Alicante. The classes were given on every Friday from 10:30AM – 2:30 PM by the teacher Javier Sánchez Merina. The first weeks we were aloud to choose one of the consisting projects. We as group chose the house Hábitat-Almacén. The Hábitat-Almacén is a house in the Province Tarragona, Spain.

In red you see the location of the house. As you can see the house is located in a rural environment. The environment mostly consist of vegetables and fruit trees. The construction is limited to the north with a plantation of pines and to the south with the terraces dedicated to the cultivation of olives, almonds, figs and apricots.

3

The project consists of a multipurpose living space/storage/kitchen/bedroom, a bathroom and a small bedroom. In the exterior, there is an open space what can be used such as a terrace or storing space. The spaces are located one in the east and one in the south of the house. Openings in the faรงade encourage North-South cross ventilation.

4

The construction of the house is built with materials which have their origin of the Province of Tarragona. The following materials are the most characteristic of the house: -

Reinforcement concrete block for the exterior layer of the faรงade;

-

Hollow concrete block for the interior layer of the faรงade;

-

The enclosures of the house are constructed with aluminum and galvanized steel;

-

The furniture is constructed with pinewood.

The energy system which are used are: -

Generator set with butane gas;

-

The configuration of the faรงade is:

-

-

Reinforcement concrete block 30cm;

-

Insulation;

-

Air cavity;

-

Hollow concrete block 10cm

This faรงade provides a thermal inertia that minimizes the use of any type of artificial air conditioning in the summer or in the winter;

-

NEURODEGENERATIVE DISORDER In the case of the Project there is exercise to adapt the house to a person who suffers from a neurodegenerative disorder. Eventually we must adapt the house for the person who suffers from the disorder. The disorder has mostly negative influences on the person who suffers from it. So we had to study the disorder and find if there is something what will help the person improve their daily lifestyle. And with that knowledge we had been able to redraw the plans with another point of view.

The neurodegenerative disorder chosen by the group was Paranoia. Paranoia is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by fear and anxiety, often to the point of delusion and irrationality.

Paranoia art by Timothy Reed

10

There are five forms in the paranoiac spectrum which are most common. So we can classify paranoia in five areas.

1. Erotomaniac type: State of mental confusion that another person, usually of a superior status, in love is with the individual.

2. Type of Grandeur: Delusion that the individual has extraordinary talent, knowledge, power, or a special relationship with a supernatural being or famous person.

3. Celotype: Delusion that the husband or wife unfaithful is to the individual.

4. Persecutory type: State of mental confusion that the person close to him (family, friends, etc.) is being harassed, spied, poisoned, persecuted etc.

5. Somatic type: State of mental confusion that the person has some physical defect or disease.

And after the five areas of paranoia were determinate. We did a study to find a positive point in the five disorders. And we showed it to the rest of the class with a video that we made. In the video we acted and tried to show the people how a person with a certain disorder reacts to the world and how different that is to a person without the disorder.

DEVELOPMENT AND PROPOSAL STORY OF THE HOUSE Proposal 1 On the proposal of the project of Ferran Grau we decided to adapt the house with mirrors, colored/filtered paper and curtains. In this way, we could create different angles and different looks for the person who suffers the certain disorder. The positive thing about the paranoia is that you have a certain quality to pay attention to every detail around you. So, with the objects placed by the group in the project the house would be an improvement for the person. We will show the development by the house from the start till the end.

This one was the first idea for the project. We wanted to create an open space with reflecting material. So, we used the mirrors and changed the exterior layer into glass. We wanted to create an outside view into the interior.

15

Here you can see the 3D view of the house. At the north façade, you can see a wall with mirrors in different angles. This was used for the different views you can create if you are standing in the house.

The glasses around the house are meant to be double mirrors. In this way, if you look from the outside to the inside, the house will be hidden, reflecting the nature what’s around the house. But if you are inside you will be able to see the landscape. The floor is also a mirror, so you will have the feeling that you are floating on the sky. The roof is a transparent glass.

16

Proposal 2 In this proposal, we added other elements which can change the view of the paranoiac person. Element such as privacy. We tried to work with the polyvalent room we already had in the house of Ferran Grau. What important is for a paranoiac person is to have clear what’s around you. So we tried to make a view for the person with the disorder so she can always see her family. And check if they are save.

For them every single detail is important, it can be seen as a weakness, but it’s actually a great quality. The world is way more detailed for them than for us. They constantly see everything around them. The way a paranoid person looks at the world is different from a normal one for a simple reason. They see what we don’t even notice.

17

In a house, you need privacy. But in this project it’s a bit different than that. Because we only want to let the paranoiac person check around the house without limits. So we created certain curtains in the house where you can see through with a part of glasses. The mother who suffers from the disorder will have the glasses. The curtains are colored by led lights, and in this way the make a private barrier. But if the paranoiac person put on the glasses, she will be able to see through.

The light can also change, and if it does, the paranoid person can change the color of the lens and see through. What is also important for a paranoiac person is to check outside the house. Putting different colors on the window, the vision will be guided to see some details, eliminating distractions. For example, with a green screen it would be easier to see through the vegetation, with a blue one the sky will be more clear

18

In the end, if there are limits in the house made by walls and other transparent materials. There will be mirrors in the house to support the view for the paranoiac person to see completely in the house. So finally she can see through the house with the house, the different angle views of the house can be seen throughout mirrors and the exterior view of the house can be seen with the windows. In this concept the paranoiac person will be able to see all the views and different angles of the house to create a save feeling for herself.

19

Organization and facilities of the house The open space creates a full functional area. To shape it in different space we decided to use the inner “skin” of the house, making it free to be detached from the wall and used as an inner wall.

Here are the different functions of the house. The rooms can be created with the inner walls. You can create a lot of different ways to create a room. The master bedroom is situated in the left. This is where the parents are sleeping. The children’s bedroom is situated in the right of the house.

20

With all the five open spaces, which are created, the composition is made when the whole family is home. There is also a possibility to have some guests over. During the night the parents have their privacy, and the kids too. However the mother is always able to check the kids in every moment through the curtains.

Here you can see the different views and in which way they work. The walls can be hided in the faรงade in the interior layer. In the followings pictures, there will be explained how the walls are working and in which way they can be hided and be folded.

21

As you can see the walls are hided in the interior layer. And the entrances of the walls are curtains. So, the mother can in every organization see what is going on. The bathroom can be separated in two parts. The toilet and de shower can be separated. So, there is always a big open space which can be used. Finally, all the movable walls can be put back in the surface of the original wall. In this way, it will be easy to change the shape of the house as wanted by the family

22

There is a possibility that the house can be used for playground for the kids. They can create for example a bigger bedroom so they can invite friends and have fun in the living room. The family can also decide to leave the space completely open when they are together so there can be more communication in the family and share more moments together. What will have a positive effect on the person who suffers from the certain disorder. We wanted the walls to be as much dynamic as possible. The wall 2* contains a sliding surface, so it is possible to take it out and create a bigger wall. It also can be used as a door. Most of the walls have inside curtains, to let people go through. And sometimes the walls are completely made by a curtain, which is easy to hide while folding it and making it disappear in the walls.

23

PROPOSAL DRAWINGS OF THE HOUSE Parents, kids and friends. Here are all the walls used and there are five open spaces. This composition is made when the whole family is in the house included with some guests/friends. During the night, the parents they can have their privacy as well as the kids. However, the mother will be able to check the kids in every single moment through the curtains. She also can keep an eye outside through the mirrors.

25

Parents and kids An opening of the wall of the bedroom is possible to create an open space. The mother can still check for the kids through the curtain and using the mirror on the wall she can see the outside. The beds that are not being used are transformed in armchairs or put on the roof.

29

Parents. Delating all the walls is possible to create a big open space with a wide living room during the day using the armchairs of the two kids beds to complete it. The room of the kids is then set free of the other two beds, putting them on the roof, and it’s possible to open the kitchen, making the area even more free. Using the mirror of the wall of the bedroom closed is possible to check outside by staying on the sofa.

WHATSAPP COMMUNICATION At the beginning, we made a group WhatsApp chat where we all the information and progress shared with each other. This are the late development of the latest technologies. Because in every project they will use a WhatsApp group where development and ideas are created.

Here are the most developing chats which are the most useful for the group.

Casa Almacén

RAFA: Through materials found in internet we understood the interiors of the house, but there are not pictures of the bathroom, and if Casa Almacén has 3 rooms, we should have pictures of all of them. MARTA: Right. And we should ask some more informations: • What is this building designed for? • Why choosing to have 3 rooms? DENNIS: And also: • Did you make the house for someone special? • Which was the main idea of the project?

34

Paranoia

MARTA: I think that a paranoid person is someone who pay a lot of attention to what's going on around him. Every movement, every light, every detail can be something bad for him, so he or she has to always be alert. And this lead to a great sense of attention, a wide vision of the surroundings and when there is a problem they will be able to find the best solution. RAFA: If we think about the kind of paranoia which lead you to be worried for your family, it also means that paranoid person love their family very much and would do everything to keep them safe. DENNIS: They can be also worried about their health, of getting sick or fat. A paranoid person will always try to eat healthy and stay in good shape with exercise. He or she would want to always look good for the one he or she loves, taking care of they aspect and dressing in a good way. RAFA: Not only he or she would look always the best with the lovers, but also they will never betray them, they can be jealous of other people, but it's just because they can love their partners very deeply.

Helmet

DENNIS: I think we should concentrate on the fact that a paranoid person have always a great vision of the surroundings, but without losing contact with the details. Maybe we can create a sort of cylinder which can show the normal person who goes inside how is the world for a paranoid person. MARTA: We can fix it on the shoulder, in this way the person will be able to move

35

with the cylinder around. If a paranoid person never lose contact with the surroundings but at the same time also with the details, we could put a big picture of an open space with some detailed highlighted, the ones a normal person won't notice. RAFA: We can color them in different way, so they will be clearly visible.

Some time later ..

RAFA: Why don't we use the "real" reality instead of a picture? We can create a helmet with coloured filters which will make you look at the outside in many different ways. MARTA: I agree. We can then add some lens, so at the same time we can have also the possibility to see details in a better way, nearer and also if you look at them closely you will be able to see every details. DENNIS: Yes, we can make it in a geometrical way, in this way we can create different squares or triangles with different colors and looking around the vision can change from the lens, to the red area, the blue one then and so on .. Project

RAFA: I think is important to keep the idea of the mirror, the mother should be able to look around the house in any moment, keeping an eye on the kids and on what’s going on outside. We could play with the angles of the walls and use them to create different visions.

36

MARTA: Yes, it is interesting like that! We can also create new windows, in this way she will have a complete view of the outside in any part of the house. Using the second skin of the house, which is lower than the normal wall in some parts, we are able to let the higher part of the room empty, in this way the sight doesn’t have obstacles. DENNIS: I agree. We can put the walls on weels as well, so the mother will be able to move them as she prefer and create all the spaces needed in different occasions: when she’s alone with her husband, when there is the whole family, when also there can be just the kids, using the house with their friends when they will be older, when they have guests .. RAFA: We can add some curtains where we want to put an entrance for rooms or the bathroom, and also for the shower, so it will completely disappear if not needed easily. DENNIS: Maybe we can create double curtains: one which can become trasparent if the mother use partcular glasses to see through and another which doesn’t let anybody see through. In this way if they have guest who wants privacy, he/she can have it.

MARTA: That’s right. We can also keep the idea of the colored glass: we can put a removable colorful filter, like a little curtain, so the mother can put it on and off as she likes, making her able to decide what she wants to see of the outside.

DEVELOPMENT MICROARCHITECTURE For the project we had to make a microarchitecture. The microarchitecture need to correspond with the neurodegenerative disorder. This was one of the hardest exercises. We had to create something what will show a positive thing of a person who suffers from paranoia. The development we created we will show in this topic. At first we wanted to create a visual circle, where you can see an image. And you could spin the circle around the head. So that you can see 360° around you. We wanted to create that because a “normal” person sees only the view in front of them. But a person who suffers from a paranoiac disorder is constantly looking around themselves. That’s why we wanted to make the circle spin around.

38

And

after

the

circle

we

had

to

make

an

adjustment

for

the

microarchitecture. The teacher tried to inspire us but it was still hard to come up with good adjustments. After that we tried to make a vision in the circle to create a woozy sight and mark the details. So we came up with a kaleidoscope and integrated that in the circle.

In the image above you can see how the kaleidoscopes are integrated in the circle.

In the images above are the kaleidoscopes illustrated with the views corresponding with the environment around it. The following drawings which belong to the microarchitecture you can find in the Annex

39

MICROARCHITECTURE PHOTOS Here are some photos of the microarchitecture that we created. We did not do the circle with the kaleidoscopes at last. Eventually we had make a helmet with different kind of views and lenses. We created this because the main idea is still to change the view and to mark the details in the surrounding environment. Here we will show the pictures of the microarchitecture and what the final delivery was of the project.

40

We created the helmet with colored paper, lenses, glue, construction plastic and with Styrofoam.

41

REFLECTION Here is the evaluation of the project. The project was for me very hard. Because I am following an engineering study and not an architectural study. And for me the way of thinking was so different than that from my groupmates. In this reflection I will describe what my tasks were and how I managed to work with this kind of project and the struggles I faced. The project went from a making a video to microarchitecture to designing a house. The hardest for me was the microarchitecture. I had to think out of the box and invent something totally different. I really struggled with this exercise. I tried really hard to come up with things. But when I finally did, the group were sometimes to critical. Sometimes it brought frustrations in myself. But I tried to work hard, and eventually we had something. Another hard part of the lesson was that when we had lesson and the teacher told us stuff to think about it felt like my brain was on a lock. I a had a hard time to think about possibilities to improve the work. But I think that eventually after a lot of hours thinking I came up with really good improvements for the project. What I learned for this project is not that much about the architecture. I learned a lot about working with other disciplines. Sometimes there were disagreements within the group and mostly it was me against the other two students. But I learned to deal with their vision. I also learned to think about the box, to think about the possibilities which are available. In my final word, I want to say that I am really glad I did this course. Even though I struggled really hard. Sometimes I didn’t like it and I wanted to quit it because it was actually nothing for me. But I am really glad I finished it and I am pretty happy about the results. I did this book in word and the rest of my project group did it in another product. This is because I don’t know how to work with Photoshop or other architectural products. But I do know word and I wanted to deliver something what I sympathize and I wat I made by my self.
