his month we celebrate El Paso doctors. I am consistently reminded of the many amazing doctors this city contains. For hundreds of miles around, we have some of the foremost minds and leading practitioners in the industry. These

men and women are award-winning specialists in all areas of

medicine, breaking ground on some remarkable research and creating an unparalleled future for medicine right here in the Southwest. It’s also inspiring to know that there are so many doctors from El Paso who are involved with non-profits here in the Sun City, in Juárez and all over the world, helping children and those less fortunate without expecting anything in return.

This issue also highlights the work of a very special man, Eric Evans, CEO for the Sierra Providence Healthcare System here in El Paso. It was an honor to spend time with this man.

In the short time we were together I personally observed how committed he is not only to his job and his employees, but also to his family. Those who know him well speak of him as an excellent father and the love he carries for his wife and children is simply inspiring. In addition to this, as an employer it was interesting to see the respect and rapport he has built with every individual and member of the staff he came into contact with as we walked the hospital halls together. Under his leadership, I, and the rest of El Paso wait to see the exciting things he will continue to accomplish at the helm of Sierra Providence.

Altogether this issue showcases the promising future that medicine has in our city and as El Paso and our esteemed medical community continue to grow, we look forward to even more advancements as we move into a new and exciting era of healthcare.

ransformational leadership is often defined by two principal characteristics: change and execution.

In its simplest form, it centers around the leadership traits and strengths required to lead an organization through some period of required change, while inspiring and helping the people within the organization to execute that change as effectively and efficiently as possible. By virtually any measure, the healthcare industry is beginning a period of what most people agree will be an extended transformation. From how patients are billed, to how facilities are structured and staffed, to how providers are compensated and trained; it is all going to change. Within our community, the leader tasked with guiding and executing the Sierra Providence Healthcare system, part of the Tenet Healthcare system, through this period of change is Eric Evans. Evans recently took over as the CEO for the system within the El Paso market, putting him at the helm of the three current hospitals, the future hospital in the northwest part of El Paso, as well as the other facilities and the several thousand professionals that make the entire system run. In other words, one hell of a big challenge.

n inspiration is born inside the soul, and it is funny

because you almost feel how tiny rays

of light spread through your body. You feel how it moves you and how it progressively starts to lead you in a path; your gut feels enthusiastic too. Choosing nursing as your route is something that requires an immense amount of stamina, emotional strength, knowledge, and above all … lots of passion.

“The best part of being a nurse is that you can make a difference, and you get so much more than you ever give because it’s just wonderful to help people,” says Dr. Jeanne M. Novotny, Ph. D., RN, FAAN who is a Professor and the Founding Dean of the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing. The school just opened its new state-of-the-art facilities this past February located right in front of the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, also a branch from Texas Tech University of Health Sciences in El Paso. The GGHSON offers a Bachelor of Science in nursing that can be obtained with an intensive 16-month program, and another undergraduate program for students who are already a RN (Registered Nurse) who want to obtain a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing).

The pioneering facilities located at the corner of Concepcion and Alberta Street contain such cutting-edge technology that faculty from other universities want to visit the building to get ideas, and its not even four months old. “We have wonderful simulation labs, and we work with emergency medicine so the students have the opportunity to practice,” says Dr. Novotny.

The experienced faculty from the GGHSON set up scenarios for the nursing students, collaborating with physicians from the Paul L. Foster School and residents from hospitals, in order to experience what it really is like to take care of someone. The laboratories contain everything a hospital would have and contain first class mannequins that are able to talk, sweat, turn blue or red, move and even show symptoms of seizure and range from small-sized cute mannequins, to 400-pound mannequins. Many nurses and physicians are known to be part of the medical field due to an event that happened to them. Some of them are retired firefighters and paramedics who admire what goes on behind the emergency doors right after they bring the wounded person to the hospital. Others might have grown up with a person already in the medical field

“I really believe that nursing is the health care career of the 21st century,” says Dr. Novotny. There are about 90 students at the school and Dr. Novotny predicts that by 2020 they’ll have about 600 students with a more

A

midst all the discourse of ballparks and water parks and, well, park parks, it is easy to see how a piece of land allocated for a biomedical technology park can go over looked. Such is the case when the El Paso City Council set aside 13 acres of property for the Medical Center of

the Americas Foundation, but with ground having been broken on the upcoming facility it will no longer be easy to overlook. That’s because in place of the run down 440 acres off of I-10 in central El Paso will arise a state of the art facility, a cutting edge center of biomedical innovation know as the Cardwell Collaborative. Ground has been broken and construction begun, all in the hopes of bringing 21st century technology and impactful economic growth to an area in need. The expansive campus is not even intended to tear down existent buildings, but to include many of the longstanding businesses, showing a commitment not only to the idea of economic development, but to the people of the community who have been counting on the arrival of the facility since murmurings were made over a decade ago.

The patience shown by the optimistic and the persistence shown by those in the MCA Foundation community will be rewarded in the spring of 2016, as the estimated $29-million modern medical miracle will arise.

The hope is to push so far forward into the future that visitors to the center may even be greeted and directed by a supercomputer upon arrival. Beyond the flash and glitz of owning one of the world’s great supercomputers is the practical business of, well, business. The facility will be designed to offer space to lease to associated entities. With the Cardwell Collaborative, named after Jack Cardwell a business mogul and philanthropist, as the center of the hub, Texas Tech and the University Medical Center have been looking into leasing space within the building as well as purchasing nearby property.

Of course all this upcoming development will require a workforce to construct and install, thus the Cardwell is proving to be an economic boon before it has even arrived and it will undoubtedly continue to be one as, according to El Paso Inc.’s Robert Gray, the MCA Foundation has started working towards integrating schools such as Jefferson High School, and Silva Health Magnet High School, and even El Paso Community College in creating collaborative programs and initiatives that provide opportunities for the students, while developing necessary tools for the MCA Foundation.

The Cardwell Collaborative is proving to be an intriguing integration of old and new as part of El Paso’s continuing push into the 21st century. It is seemingly a study in contradiction as a cutting-edge facility in a formerly rundown part of town that is combining some of the most celebrated minds in their fields and associating them with those of aspiring teenage thinkers … but it is this exciting blend that celebrates the past, while focusing on the future, that makes the Cardwell Collaborative one of the most exciting collaborations the southwest has ever seen.

Seared Sesame-Ginger Ahi Tuna with Organic Roasted Asparagus, Cherry Tomatoes and Baby Pearl Onions SERVES: 4 Ingredients 4 (6-8 ounce) Ahi Tuna (3/4 inch thick) fresh or water-packed cold-water fish 4 tbsp. of dark sesame oil 4 tbsp. of Bragg Amino Acids (a healthy substitute for soy sauce) 2 tbsp. of Grated fresh ginger 2 Garlic cloves (minced) 2 Organic green onions (thinly sliced) Reserve a few slices for garnishing 2 tsp. of lime- juice 4 tbsp. sesame seeds (toasted, and black and white sesame seeds) 1 tsp. of fresh cracked pepper 1 tsp. of sea salt 8 Organic heirloom cherry tomatoes 1 Bunch of organic asparagus 8 Baby organic pearl onions (pealed) 5 tbsp. olive oil Directions Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

Mix the sesame oil, Bragg Amino Acids, ginger, garlic, green onions and lime juice in a glass bowl or non-metal bowl. Coat the tuna on both sides and cover the bowl and refrigerate for one hour.

Toast the sesame seeds in a stainless steel or cast iron pan until lightly brown. Remove the seeds and allow them to cool on a large plate, add cracked pepper.

Prepare the asparagus by washing them and then blotting them dry so they will roast and not steam in the pan. Cut off the bottom about one inch. Spread the asparagus in a single layer in the baking pan and add the heirloom cherry tomatoes and baby pearl onions.

Begin by drizzling olive oil all over the asparagus and then add the sea salt and freshly ground pepper.

Roast the asparagus, onions and tomatoes for about 12-15 minutes.

Be sure the oven is already hot so the asparagus will begin to brown on the outside first without overcooking and getting too soft.

On the side, add the olive oil to a skillet and allow it to get hot. Coat the Ahi tuna in the sesame seeds you toasted and add cracked pepper to taste. Then add the Ahi Tuna to the hot skillet.

Cook the Tuna 2-3 minutes on each side so that the Ahi is seared on the outside and rare on the inside.

Serve with the roasted organic asparagus, baby pearl onions and heirloom cherry tomatoes and add the remaining sesame seeds on top of the vegetables. Garnish with the remaining green onion.

Picking the perfect primer Primers are great way to create a base to ensure the smooth application as well as the longevity of your foundation. There are variety of primers available on the market now targeted to perform a variety of different tasks, from correcting tone to diminishing pores as well as fine lines and wrinkles. While choosing a primer, it is important to consider the ingredients list to ensure that the primer you choose is one designed to perform for your specific needs. Arbonne’s Makeup Primer ($40) has a variety of vitamin-rich antioxidants, which help prevent your makeup from changing color as it oxidizes throughout the day.
