Welcome... Hello, and welcome to the 6th edition of the Hendy summer newsletter. We are the south’s premier family motor group and love to share as much interesting news of people, places and products as possible, as well as stories and insight into the Hendy world as it stands in 2012. And what a year! A raft of brilliant new cars have made their way into our showrooms, including the new Kia Cee’d, Ford Ranger, and Honda Civic, refreshed Kia Rio, and the imposing Iveco Stralis Hi-Way. We’ve also started new charity efforts and heard from our staff about theirs, from Moonwalking to painting the town purple. New Hendy Group projects have come to fruition this year. We launched Hendy Advantage in July, a new loyalty scheme to both attract new customers and keep old ones coming back by providing unique benefits. We’ve also further developed our Hendy Heartbeat customer satisfaction process and are currently in the midst of launching Hendy Privilege, a new website dedicated to providing great deals for Ford UK employees, their friends and family.

Contents As part of our drive to focus our business around our customers and our employees, we’ve updated our logo in keeping with our slogan. But ‘It’s all about you’ is more than just a memorable phrase to us – it’s also an ethos. It encapsulates our feelings about our customers and our employees, and you can be sure you'll see more of it in the future. Our online and social media presence continues to grow - our Twitter follower count quadrupled last year’s figures, and our Facebook page is also proving popular. We usually post news, entertaining links and run competitions with great prizes, so do follow and get involved! Onwards and upwards

Hendy Group invest in new Winchester Service Centre and Cosham dealership refurbishment Hendy is excited to announce the opening of their new Honda Authorised Repairer outlet, now serving customers in Winchester. This brand new facility has been purpose built adjacent to our old Hendy Honda site in Winchester, with a 5,000sqm workshop area to accommodate five work bays, state-of-the-art vehicle lifts and workshop equipment in each bay. The building was designed by Honda with architects Simpson Hilder Associates, and was built by Talbot Construction. During the whole process we provided input into the layout of the building internally and worked very closely with all three partners to make sure we ended up with the ideal building. On top of the workshop equipment the building incorporates some of the latest levels of energy

efficient cooling and heating systems and even boasts a number of solar panels on the roof, reducing the carbon footprint of the site. The original Honda location is being put to good use and is now home to Hendy Ford as well as supporting the Mazda Authorised Repairer facility. Winchester is not the only site to undergo a facelift. Our Ford and Kia showrooms at Cosham have undergone an extensive overhaul, and the refreshed buildings are packed with contemporary features to make finding your next car that much more enjoyable. Romsey Show Latest Honda offers from the Hendy Group

This year the Hendy Group will be attending the Romsey agricultural show, held at Broadlands on Sunday 8th September. The show is one of the oldest in England, running annually since 1842 and is filled with cattle competing for glory in the livestock classes, horse show jumping, falconry displays, gundog training and the famous event, the 'parade of hounds'. Foodies can enjoy culinary delights, whilst shoppers can visit 500 trade stands. Hendy will be represented at the show, showing the latest cars in our range. Hendy Performance is proud to be involved with Mugen, a premium brand which specialises in tuning Honda engines and is linked to the Honda franchise. The Honda Civic Eco Challenge Paul Fitzgerald and Colin Dyke of Hendy Business took the new Honda Civic diesel for a 50 mile round trip between Portsmouth and Southampton in the quest for maximum economy. There was very little in it, as Paul was able to achieve 63.2mpg with Colin close behind with 62.8mpg. With a couple more runs, both Paul and Colin were confident they’d be able to get even closer to the published figure of 67.3mpg. Some manufacturers struggle to get anywhere near their published figures, so this is a testament to the time Honda have spent getting this new Civic right. With emissions of only 110g/km and uncompromised power of 150ps, this vehicle really is class-leading.

Charity Giving something back Charity Moonwalk Rachel Hansford moonwalked for charity in May. The Moonwalk London 2012 event saw over 17,000 participants coming together to raise money for breast cancer and Rachel, Alison Tobutt and Amy Hansford raised an amazing £1,000 for the Walk the Walk charity! Rachel would like to thank everyone for their support.

Hendy Kia makes the Purple Pledge Hendy Kia in Eastleigh and Cosham has shown its support for My Purple Pledge, a fundraising campaign organised by the charity Young Epilepsy. March 26th was Purple Day, and marked the international day of epilepsy awareness. In support, the entire staff at Hendy Kia went purple, including purple clothes and purple face paint, helping to raise awareness. Stephen Hendy travelled to Brands Hatch race circuit this July to take part in the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge... and what a challenge it turned out to be! After a 40-minute test session, Stephen was let loose on the GP circuit to put in some fast laps for qualifying. Some fuelling issues and lack of experience with the car meant that the team qualified in 10th place on the grid. This, however, would prove to be an advantage for the start of the race! The car was fixed overnight and the race day arrived. A short test session in the morning proved that all was well, and ready to go! As race time approached, the weather turned 'British' and various settings were changed in anticipation of the wet race. So far, no testing had been done in these conditions. Having never 'raced' before, the rolling start procedure was something to master, and being at the back of the pack of Astons thundering over the start line at 100mph, in a torrential downpour, the adrenaline starts to flow! After four slippery laps, the Generation AMR Aston was up to 4th place and making good ground. Unfortunately an over-enthusiastic spin cost some valuable places! As the hour long race progressed, taming the 465 horse power beast in the horrendous conditions was gradually starting to happen and Stephen was now lapping 2nd or 3rd fastest... but it was not to be! In a train of three cars, the leader spun and then drove into the number '56' car of Stephen Hendy resulting in an unscheduled pit stop to correct the steering damage and change a puncture. This unfortunately marred what could have been a good result and Stephen eventually finished 9th! Speaking after the race, Stephen said, “The novelty of racing with other cars around you adds to the adrenaline kick, and the ability to put in laps with a robot-like consistency is certainly something to be admired”. Will there be another outing in the Aston?... watch this space!

Something very different from Hendy Power Hendy Power have been working on a project not seen on the streets of Britain since 1944! Recently we tested two engines for Mr Mark Robinson of Watford, who is currently restoring an M10 tank (but don't worry about meeting him on the road - the gun is deactivated). Mark has been stripping the tank down to its last nuts and bolts and, when fully rebuilt, the engines were delivered to Hendy Power for testing before being mounted back into the M10. When finished, Mark will be painting his armoured assassin in the colours of the Canadian Army of the period. He also has two similar projects to follow this fascinating piece of engineering history.

Hendy Power Engines, Parts & Service The M10 “Achilles” (known as the Wolverine to the British Army and “TD” to the US Army) tank destroyer was developed by the allies during WWII as a fast moving armoured vehicle able to destroy German tanks like the Pz.Kfz.II, III and IV used in the 'blitzkrieg'. The tank had the same chassis as a Sherman tank but less armour to make it lighter and faster. The M10 was armed with a 3" or 76.2 mm gun. The British also acquired these vehicles but mounted it with the much more potent 17-pdr gun.

Trevor Gay - Truck Technician Trevor Gay is a Truck Technician based at our School Lane dealership in Chandler’s Ford.

What do you find the most enjoyable aspect of your role?

How long have you been in the role?

Variety. I’ve had nine years on late shift and nights at Hendy. When I finished them five years ago, I changed to the morning shift (6am-2pm) where there’s a lot of different jobs to tackle.

I’ve been here for 14 years, but I first began at Hendy as an apprentice in 1974, so this is my second time with the company. I stayed away for 20 years and always regretted it. A lot of people have been at Hendy for 30 years! How did you find yourself in this role? I stayed in touch with people from Hendy and, when the place I was working unfortunately closed, Paul Gilbert offered me a place back here at Hendy. They really look after you here!

What's the worst thing to have happened to you at work? I had a vehicle towed back a few months ago. The electrician wanders over, says "there’s your problem" and changes a fuse! If you were buying a new car, what would it be?

What's the most challenging aspect of the job?

The new Fiesta and, if money didn’t matter, a new Ford Ranger would be nice.

I’m now 54 and I wasn’t brought up with computers. You have to plug in to talk to the ECUs, but sadly they don’t talk to me.

What's the best thing about working for Hendy?

Sometimes I’ll collar the apprentices to give me a hand but when I plug in, I’m paranoid about wiping the memory.

The people, really. We have a really good atmosphere. It’s a nice place to work, and I get on well with most people here, we have a good laugh. I had to buy cakes for everybody last Friday on my birthday though (had to take kids out that night as well)!

What are you looking forward to the most over the next year? I’m getting married again next year on May 4th! A bit about Trevor: Trevor loves rowing, and he’s dedicated much of his time to Southampton Amateur Rowing Club, where he is Club Captain, and a sitting member of the Rowing and Social Committees. He rows with Andy Stevenson, Hendy Sales Director – but thanks to his experience with an oar, Trev is actually in charge of Andy!

Hendy Group 25 Club proudly welcomes five new members The Hendy Group 25 Club was founded in 2002, recognising staff who have served for over 25 years. We pride ourselves on being a family-run business, and are delighted to have such talented and loyal staff who have been part of our company for so long. Ranging across all departments of the Hendy Group, the 25 club has an astonishing 59 members. The most recent members are Ian Gillson, Customer Services Manager at Hendy Honda in Cosham, Peter Bridges, Parts Warehouse Operations Manager from Hendy Parts Hedge End, Bryan Ede, Power Products Service and Manufacturing Manager from Power Products in Cosham and David Andrews, Customer Services Advisor from Leigh Road Eastleigh, all who have clocked up 25 years of service this year.

The new members are invited to a celebratory luncheon in late August, where they are presented with an engraved carriage clock and a silver ‘25 Club’ lapel pin. Among the 25 club members, 34 have recorded over 30 years of service and 5 have worked at Hendy for over 40 years. In total, the members of the 25 Club have worked a staggering 1,888 years between them!
