Easy DIY gifts for everyone on list You want to find unique gifts for everyone on your list this holiday season. Rather than search endlessly, have you considered making your own presents? DIY gifting is a growing trend, providing people the opportunity to create the ideal present with loved ones’ personalities in mind. Because it is homemade, it is customizable and one of a kind, with deeper meaning than anything that can be purchased at a store. Whether you are an amateur DIYer, an avid crafter or do not consider yourself creative at all, you can make the perfect holiday gift guaranteed to impress everyone on your list. Here are five easy holiday DIY projects for inspiration: Canvas handprint art Handprint art is great if you want to involve kids in DIY gifting. This is a present that can be proudly given from the entire family and has loads of meaning for recipients like grandparents or aunts and uncles. First, get white canvases and acrylic paint from your local craft store. Then gather the kids and cover up clothing (acrylic paint is not washable) and decide what you want to create with their tiny handprints. From green wreaths and holiday trees to thumbprint snowmen and snowflakes, options are endless to make a unique gift that perfectly freezes a moment in time through their hand impressions. Family ornaments DIY ornaments become cherished holiday decorations that are loved year after year. Stylish, classic and sentimental, ornaments featuring the silhouettes of your family are guaranteed to become keepsakes. Using the ultimate smart cutting machine, Cricut Maker, you can upload

images of your children and family in Cricut Design Space, quickly create a design and then the machine seamlessly cuts the design from your choice of materials. A timeless black vinyl silhouette adhered to a natural wood round, both cut on Cricut Maker, is an elegant ornament. Or, get creative with a standalone silhouette design cut from black leather brushed with glitter. You can even use images of pets if you want to include fur-family members, too. Hot chocolate in a jar Tasty treats are plentiful during the holidays, but instead of going with the standard cookies, gift a beautiful mason jar filled with all the ingredients for decadent hot chocolate. Start with a glass mason jar and fill about two-thirds full of hot chocolate mix. Then add in a few small layers of dry extras to customize the flavor, such as chocolate chips, crushed candy canes or peanut-butter chips. Finish with a layer of mini marshmallows and screw on the top. Add a bow and directions for making the hot chocolate and you have an adorable gift for anyone on your list. Custom T-shirts Does your mom have a fun nickname? Does your brother have a trademark greeting? Does your best friend adore the ‘80s? Pick up any type of plain shirt and get ready to make it spectacular with a few fun catch phrases or designs. Ironon projects are an easy and fun way to make your gifts truly personal this holiday season. To make custom T-shirts, use the Cricut Maker to cut out your designs and the Cricut EasyPress 2 to get perfect iron-on results in 60 seconds or less. Not feeling a T-shirt? Consider customizing a canvas bag, hat, a special blanket or the sides of socks or a special blanket, if you want to try something different.

Homemade ornaments include cut-outs of family members can make for a great do-it-yourself Christmas gift.

All-in-one movie night in Give the gift of a wonderful night in by creating a movie gift basket customized to your loved one’s personality. First, start with a big container that can hold all the goodies, such as a themed plastic popcorn bowl. Then choose a movie of special meaning, such as a beloved childhood film or one you watched together on a special occasion, like a first date.

Include the movie and every treat you can imagine to complete movie night, from popcorn and classic theater boxed candy to comfy extras like a blanket or throw for staying cozy. With a little DIY ingenuity, some crafting materials, and smart tools, you can make the ideal present for everyone on your list. Let your imagination soar and get creative during the most festive time of year.

Don’t toy around when it comes to safety Seeing the excitement on a child’s face when they open holiday gifts is one of the joys of the season. But picking that perfect present goes beyond choosing what is popular, cute, or exciting—the safety of the children in the home needs to be a significant consideration as well. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection asks toy shoppers to review the safety of each potential gift before hitting the register this holiday season. “There are a number of safety factors to consider when shopping for gifts for children,” said Michelle Reinen, director

of the Bureau of Consumer Protection. “A good starting point for assessing a toy is by closely reviewing the safety labels and age grading information on the toy packaging and any additional warnings about small parts, magnets, chemicals and other risks.” When shopping for toys, look for these labels on packaging or warnings on product webpages: n General warning labels listing small parts, magnets, suffocation hazards, etc. n Age grading: use the manufacturer’s suggested age range as a foundation for whether a toy is appropriate for the physi-

cal development of a child. n All toys: “ASTM F963”—this label indicates that a toy meets the latest toy safety standards. All toys sold in the U.S. must meet this standard. ASTM F963 includes guidelines and test methods to prevent injuries from choking, sharp edges, and other potential hazards. n Art materials: “ASTM D4236”— this label indicates that art materials have been reviewed by a toxicologist and are labeled with cautionary information, if necessary. n Toys with fabrics: “Flame resistant”—this label means that a material

will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from an ignition source. Some additional things to consider when shopping for gifts for children: Pick up any safety items that go along with a toy such as a helmet for a bike or scooter. For homes with younger children, avoid toys with small parts, magnets, cords or strings. Choose gifts that are both age and skill appropriate for the child. Turn to SAFETY/page 14B

Gift ideas for people with a lot of greenery By Melinda Myers It’s a jungle in there. Every window, surface, and brightly lit corner is filled with decorative or edible greenery. There is no doubt what to gift this person for the holidays. More of the same. A lack of outdoor growing space, limited growing seasons, and time constraints have many people filling their apartments and homes with fiddle leaf figs, palms, succulents, herbs, and vegetables. And you have probably heard of the houseplant craze amongst millennials. Perhaps the need to destress after a long work day, concern for purer air, an inter-

est in fresh food, and a desire to be close to nature contribute to this craze. No matter the reason, gifting a millennial a trendy houseplant is sure to be a hit. No matter your age, living in a green space and tending plants has many benefits. It reduces stress, improves one’s mood, and provides a sense of emotional well being. Planting seeds and watching them grow generates feelings of hope. If it is edible, even better. Indoor herb and vegetable gardens provide fresh, nutritious food to harvest and enjoy. Newbies and those making the gardening transition indoors may find it challenging. Limited light, a different pallet of plants, and variable watering regimes

can be intimidating. Those who have killed philodendrons and succulents in the past may have given up, but fortunately there are solutions and easy-care options for those looking to expand their indoor green spaces. Take the guesswork out of watering with hydroponics. Water and nutrients are available and delivered via a wick or similar system to the plants when needed. Colorful Mason-type canning jar planters fitted with hydroponic grow kits are perfect for starting seeds and growing plants on windowsills or countertops. Add a sleeker touch with a colored glass cylinder like Modern Sprout’s

Hydroponic Tumbler Grow Kit. Give them all they need; seeds or plants, container and growing media. Make it yourself or buy a ready-made kit like the Wax Planter Grow Kit (modsprout.com). This gift is sure to provide a sense of satisfaction from planting to harvesting their first sprig of basil or decorating the spruce tree they grew from a seed. Brighten up growing spaces with indoor lights. Supplementing natural light or providing light in a windowless space can make the difference between sucTurn to GREEN/page 11B

Green cess and failure. Energy efficient LED grow lights provide the light plants need while saving on energy costs. Attractive options and space saving systems blend in nicely to any home. Complete lighting systems, like the Growhouse, are designed to fit small spaces and make watering easy while protecting surrounding surfaces from water damage. Match the plants to the light conditions and the recipient’s gardening skills. Succulents are trendy and perfect for busy gardeners with sunny windows or grow light set-ups. They thrive with benign neglect; as do snake plants, Chinese evergreens, Anthuriums, and ZZ plants in

low light conditions. Orchids and bonsai make the perfect gift for those ready to take their indoor gardening to the next level. For the most fool-proof winter option, gift an amaryllis or paperwhite bulb kit. No matter the recipient’s age or experience level, the gift of gardening will provide immediate and lasting enjoyment. (Myers is the author of more than 20 gardening books and host of The Great Courses’ How to Grow Anything DVD series. Her website, www.MelindaMyers.com, offers gardening tips and videos.)

Avoiding something no one wants for Christmas Is influenza on your gift list this year? December is typically the height of the flu season and holiday parties can be a swap meet for pathogens. Holiday hugs, handshakes and conversations may include germs that will make you sick. If you are attending or hosting a party this season, you need to know how to keep your guests, family, and yourself safe from infection. “The holidays are the most social time of the year, and when people get together, germs come along too,” said Steve Zimmerman, director of healthcare services for ServiceMaster Clean. His company specializes in cleaning hospitals, offices and schools, so they are experts in infection control. “You can’t eliminate the pathogens people may carry with them, but there are many things you can do to protect yourself and others from contamination,” he said. “A little knowledge can help prevent a lot of illness this time of year.” Here are the ServiceMaster Clean top seven tips for avoiding holiday flu infection: 1. Hand hygiene. Wash often and thoroughly with antibacterial soap. Also use hand sanitizer frequently and avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes. 2. Get a flu shot. Be aware that flu vaccines may take up to two weeks to be effective, so be inoculated well before

the holiday parties begin. 3. Be careful of high-touch hot zones. Some surfaces (kitchen counters, doorknobs, bathroom faucets, etc.) are touched by a lot of people. Flu viruses can survive on hard surfaces for days, some bacteria for weeks! If you are hosting an event, clean hard surfaces thoroughly with a disinfectant cleaner. If you are attending an event, be aware of what you touch and practice hand hygiene. 4. Avoid close encounters. Flu pathogens can be spread by airborne water droplets. A flu carrier in close proximity can make you ill. Keep your distance. If you are sneezing and coughing, consider staying home. If you sneeze or cough while attending an event, use “cough etiquette”—cover your mouth and nose, and use disposable tissues that you throw away immediately. 5. Drinking-glass roulette. Cups and glasses sometimes get misplaced or confused at parties. If you are unsure, get a new cup. 6. Toys and games are not always fun. Toys can be teeming with pathogens if handled by people who are ill. Hand hygiene is essential if you or your kids are passing around toys, games or gift items. 7. Mistletoe. Forget about it! Blow them a kiss instead. Be aware of these seven hygiene tips and you will likely have a much happier, healthier holiday season.

Protect data from holiday cyberattacks

Be careful when using insecure Wi-Fi networks If you are traveling or out shopping during the holidays, you may find yourself on an unfamiliar Wi-Fi network. Many stores, airports and rest stops offer free Wi-Fi as a convenience, but often those networks are not secured. That makes it especially risky to make online purchases because the traffic from your device can be easily monitored and stolen. If you are using public Wi-Fi networks, then browsing to any website, make sure your connection is encrypted and secure by looking for the lock icon in the top left of the address bar. Also, always double check that the address you are navigating to is what you expected. Many modern devices, like the ASUS NovaGo, now feature built-in LTE, which offers a more secure experience for your online holiday shopping. Do not rely on passwords alone Passwords and user IDs are a staple of cybersecurity, but they can only get you so far. To further ensure your data stays protected, consider using password management and verification apps. They let you use your face, fingerprint, eyes or other methods to access your data across devices. For example, the Microsoft Authenticator app adds an extra level of security with two-step verification that allows you to access your Microsoft account and apps quickly and securely without having to remember a password. Avoid phishing scams With so many companies e-mailing holiday promotions, it can feel like your inbox is under assault. In fact, it very well could be. Some of those e-mails may be phishing scams designed to steal your private information. To protect your data, do not click on any unfamiliar links and carefully review all notifications from your bank to catch any potentially fraudulent activity. Remember, scammers can be sophisticated. They may use personalized e-mails to gain your confidence or replicate the style of a well-known financial services company. If an e-mail or link looks the slightest bit suspicious, do not click it. Go directly to your bank or other online account to confirm the information independently. Back up your data If all your data is stored in one place, it is vulnerable. Bad actors can lock up your device and demand payment to release your files. That is why backing your data up to the cloud is critical for protecting your files against ransomware attacks. The cloud allows you to safeguard your data and access it from multiple devices. Cloud storage services like Microsoft’s One Drive are secure and can also let you easily transfer your data if you’re upgrading to a new device this holiday season. Utilize privacy screens Preventing people from looking over your shoulder and stealing your information is the simplest and easiest way to protect your personal data. When online shopping in public, use privacy screens to hide your information. Some devices, like the HP EliteBook x360 and HP Spectre x360, have integrated privacy screens that instantly shield your screen with the push of a button. If your device does not come with one built in, you can purchase a priva-

cy screen from the Microsoft Store or another retailer. Using a modern operating system—like Windows 10—with the latest security updates and built-in anti-

virus protection like Windows Defender Antivirus is the best way to ward off unwanted intrusions this holiday season.

Holiday crime used to mean break-ins and thieves swiping packages from your doorstep. But now there is an increasing number of cybersecurity threats specifically looking to capitalize on the holiday season. With many people getting new devices, using unfamiliar networks and doing a lot of online shopping, bad actors have plenty of targets from which to choose. By following these simple steps for data protection, people can keep their digital information secure this holiday season.

Safety

Watch out for “button batteries,” coinsized (or smaller) batteries that are used in some toys, remote controls, flashlights, hearing aids, and more. Never let a child play with these batteries as they pose a choking hazard and can cause serious internal chemical burns in as little as two hours. Make sure that any toys that use these batteries have a screw to secure the battery compartment. Watch out for gifts containing highpowered magnets. These small “rare earth” magnets can easily be swallowed by children and can attract one another in the intestinal tract, requiring surgical removal. Avoid no-name products. A manufacturer’s name and address is not a guarantee of safety, but it means you can track down a legitimate company to remedy problems. Look for hidden dangers such as sharp

points, loud noises or projectiles. If you are purchasing wooden toys, look for splinters or sharp edges. If you are purchasing used toys, skip ones with chipped paint in order to avoid possible exposure to lead. Safety concerns do not end at the register. Be mindful of younger children and keep small or pointed toys and accessories out of their reach. Make sure to read any battery charging instructions that come with toys as chargers and adapters can overheat and pose burn hazards to young children. Keep an eye on the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission’s (CPSC) website (cpsc. gov) for new recalls and consider signing up for DATCP’s Keep Your Kids Safe enewsletter in order to receive a monthly summary of the children’s products recalled by the CPSC.

The Better Business Bureau is reminding consumers that the online “Secret Sister” gift exchange and similar invitations are illegal and should be ignored. The campaign, which was first big in 2015, again has been circulating on social media sites, particularly Facebook. The post claims that participants will receive up to 36 gifts in exchange for sending one gift valued at $10. Users are encouraged to invite others to participate in the holiday gift exchange, where they will receive information on where to mail gifts. But there is one big problem with gift chains like “Secret Sister”—they are pyramid schemes. The U.S. Postal Inspection Services says that gift exchanges are illegal gambling and that participants could be subject to penalties for mail fraud. Pyramid schemes are illegal, either by mail or on social media, if money or other items of value are requested with assurance of a sizable

return for those who participate. Here is how this scheme works: If a consumer purchases one gift for a stranger, she will receive as many as 36 gifts in return. This type of gift exchange may seem reasonable enough in theory— six friends invite six more friends, who all send gifts to the participant in spot 1 before that person’s named is removed. This process repeats itself with the participant in the 2 spot, and so on. Of course, starting this gift exchange comes with a catch—you need to disclose your personal information, such as your home address. If you receive a chain letter by mail, e-mail, or social media, especially one that involves money or gifts, ignore it. Report the post to Facebook by clicking on the three little dots in the upper right corner of the post. For more information on scams, check out BBB Scam Tips (BBB.org/ ScamTips).

Putting best face forward

5 holiday beauty tips to look best for any gathering

Now that the holiday season is here, people likely will be attending more parties, gatherings, and social events than normal. After all, this is the season for celebrating with friends and family, while also meeting fun new people. As you relax and socialize, you also will want the confidence that comes with looking your best. Recent research suggests we make first impressions in one-tenth of a second, and often faces are the first thing we notice. “Our eyes settle on features that are directly in line with our gaze,” said psychologist Vivian Diller in Psychology Today. “Facial features are more often remembered following initial interactions than people’s bodies or even their personality traits.” The good news? There are several easy and effective steps you can take to make your face look brighter and more vibrant looking for this festive season. Need some suggestions? Consider the following tips for optimizing your partygoing appearance regardless of your age or gender. n Exfoliate your skin several times weekly.
