Illinois State Coordinator Greetings

Greetings to the Collegiate and Alumnae Sorors of Illinois. I wanted to take a moment and say HAPPY CENTENNIAL! This has been a wonderful year, and a wonderful opportunity to see so many of you at the different events held in Illinois and in Washington, D.C.. I am so happy with the support and response from the Sorors of Illinois, from the record attendance and participation to the numerous awards received for your outstanding service and commitment to Delta. As we close out this Historical Centennial Year, let us keep the torch lit and burning in our hearts with excitement for the years to come. There is still work to be done and I know that the Sorors of Illinois are up to the challenge.

Centennial Celebration was being a part of the Founders Celebration during our actual Founders Weekend held on the campus of Howard University. Being able to walk the grounds where our Founders walked 100 years ago when they stepped out on faith and principle to start our beloved sisterhood was a very emotional experience. Seeing all the Sorors gather at the Fortitude sculpture to sing the Sweetheart song was truly overwhelming. I also attended the Suffrage March and the National Convention which were truly memorable as well but it was something about being a part of our Founders Day activities and being in D.C. on January 13, 2013 that really served as the icing on the cake. There is no doubt that we had THE BEST Centennial Celebration!

Illinois State Leadership Team

What a way to begin my first year as a neophyte in Delta Sigma Theta, but to celebrate its 100th year of its founding. It has been an honor and privilege to fellowship amongst my beautiful Sorors for so many momentous events. Having been initiated in Spring 2012, Lambda Chapter, I have witnessed so much history and being able to express the richness through the Centennial Torch Ceremony at my founding chapter of University of Chicago, was one of the most memorable centennial events for me. It was such an awesome event and to see so many Illinois chapters come together and celebrate the legacy and labor of our Illustrious Founders, made me filled with pride and joy. After our statewide celebrations concluded, I was so excited for our nationwide celebration in Washington, D.C.. It was that moment that reminded me why I wanted to be a Delta my entire life. Seeing so many powerful women come together and celebrate 100 years of sisterhood, scholarship, and service was something I will forever cherish. After returning from D.C. I felt empowered and ready to continue the legacy. Violets, Shonice James Lambda Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. IL State Programming Co-Coordinator

Sorors, this year has been one of the most memorable years of my life. My most memorable moment came during Founders weekend in D.C. when I went to Howard University and walked the grounds where Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. first began. I was speechless as the tears rolled down my face. I felt the presence of the founders surrounding me and it was as if the Holy Spirit met me on that campus. I was so thankful to God at that moment, he had blessed me for such a time as that. I looked around and saw a sea of Sorors in red, hugging each other, crying on each others shoulder, singing the Sweetheart Song, and just reflecting from where we came to where we are 100 years later. I will cherish that experience for the rest of my life. Message from the President Joliet Area/South Suburban Alumnae Chapter

Carolyn Dishmon

As the chapter reconvene for a new fiscal year. JASSAC is off to a great start and ready to do the work of Delta. The summer was great as we were able to celebrate our 51st National Convention. Just let me reminisce for a moment. We gathered in Washington D.C. with over 32,000 of our Sorors. Out of all the conventions I have gone to, this one stood out above all. It was our Centennial! I am sure our 22 Founders from Howard University would have been overwhelmed seeing all the Sorors gathering in the place where it all started 100 years ago. As I basked in jubilation it was a blessing to pay tribute to our sorority’s accomplishments and great history, knowing that we are a vital public service organization impacting the world.

We performed over 114 KISS (Kindness In Service through Sisterhood) acts in one day. We went to each fire and police station in our 22 chosen pearl communities. Each community then performed 2-5 additional acts of service. Some of the activities also included, visiting seniors in a nursing home, planting flowers, buying ice-cream cones, painting park benches, servicing lunch to disabled residents, assisting with food distribution, etc.. We were honored to have our National Treasurer, Terri R. Prunty, join us for our opening and closing ceremonies as well as participate in some of the community activities, as well. We collected over 100 bags of clothes, 100+ pairs of shoes, 200+ books, and numerous other items.

Founders Day While many of our Sorors celebrated our Founders on the west coast, the Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates Alumnae Chapter held a fabulous luncheon and program at the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club on Sunday, January 13th. Our key-note presenter was Soror Karen Aderinto who shared her experiences as a 50-year Delta as well as her involvement in historic Civil Rights events such as lunch counter sit-ins as well the plethora of world-wide dignitaries she has met throughout her life journeys. Soror Aderinto’s Delta- as well as life experiences are so phenomenal that she was honored by the Midwest Region at the 2013 Convention as our Delta Dear of the Year. Additionally, Sorors reenacted the our Sorority’s participation in the Women’s Suffrage March with all the gusto and fortitude that our Founders displayed.

Soror to Soror Sorors as you reflect back on this Centennial year, think on those who have gone on before us and paved a remarkable way for us to journey on. Reflect on the vision of the Founders, and ask yourself, what can I do this year and in the years to come to ensure the vision lives on? Reflect on the voices that marched on Washington, that stood for change, that demanded equality, and ask yourself, is my voice being heard? Reflect on the victories that we have won as a sorority, and tell yourself I am victorious! Moving forward for the next 100 years, I charge each of you to give a 122% in everything you do for DELTA; 100% effort, plus an additional 22% to represent the founders that have made this Centennial possible.
