Dell Medical School recognizes the value of diversity. We’re developing and implementing programs to create a vibrant, inclusive environment.

DIVERSITY Dell Med defines diversity broadly to include race, ethnicity, abilities (both mental and physical), family educational history, gender, gender identity, immigration status, language, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, veteran status, age and other groups. VALUES In an effort to reflect our values of Realize, Better, Caring, Together, we believe that creating diversity, equity and inclusion is a purpose-driven process of building an inclusive and connected community of students, trainees, staff and faculty in which everyone is recognized in their uniqueness, valued for what they contribute and respected for their worldview.

CREATING A VIBRANT, INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT At Dell Med, the office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion oversees a growing list of programs that support diverse groups of students, faculty, staff and residents. The school takes a multifaceted approach to creating an inclusive system to: • Enhance the pipeline to recruit, train and retain a cadre of leaders in health care and academic medicine from groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine. • Create the most supportive learning and work environment for students, faculty, staff and residents. • Ensure that these groups are prepared to provide compassionate and culturally sensitive care to our diverse patient populations.

Diversity, Climate & Engagement Committee This committee allows faculty and staff to voice their needs for a supportive work environment in which we embrace our differences.

Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) LMSA unites and empowers medical students through service, mentorship and education to advocate for the health of the Latino community.

LGBTQ+ Alliance The alliance supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, asexual and allied Dell Med, students, faculty, staff and residents.

Making Equity Standard in Healthcare (MESH) This student group trains and supports the next generation of health care advocates and professionals to rethink patient-centeredness, inclusivity and equity.

Residents & Fellows for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee This committee allows Dell Med’s graduate medical education community (GME) to actively promote and advocate for diversity, inclusion and equality.

Student National Medical Association (SNMA) SNMA is dedicated to increasing the number of African-American, Latino, and other students of color entering and completing medical school and ensuring that medical education and services are culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse populations.

Women’s Leadership Council This group supports women in medicine and the medical sciences by addressing issues such as gender equity, recruitment, retention and career advancement through diversity dialogues and other activities.

The Health Sciences Summer Camps helped me realize what medicine is really like and how it helps people. I feel more motivated to work hard in high school so I can one day do the same important work as the doctors we met. Alexandra DeAvila, Sophomore, IDEA Allan, Austin

PIPELINE PROGRAMS Dell Med is developing programs with Huston-Tillotson University, a historically black university in Austin, along with the Austin Independent School District (AISD), Austin Community College, St. Edward’s University and UT Austin, to encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine to consider careers in the health professions.

Health Sciences Summer Camps Launched in 2015 in partnership with AISD, our unique, week-long summer camps provide an opportunity for middle- and high-school students to learn about the various health professions and take part in hands-on health sciences activities. The camps provide unique educational experiences, including opportunities to earn CPR and AED certifications and participate in rotations in biology, chemistry and clinical skills labs.

A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY Dell Med’s Department of Population Health works with a Community Strategy Team including nine grassroots leaders, connectors and advocates — each cornerstones of their communities — to rethink strategies for meeting the health needs of underserved people and neighborhoods across the region. They are building relationships, especially in communities most affected by social and health inequities and disparities.

ABOUT DELL MEDICAL SCHOOL The future of medical education, care and research is taking shape at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, created in unprecedented partnership with local taxpayers, who in 2012 voted create the medical school and to support a vision for better health in Austin and Travis County.
