PANTONE’S SPRING 2017 COLOR REPORT IS OUT It might appear a bit soon to start thinking about 2017 Spring already but... Not really! The good news is that you can start working on your future Interior Design projects right now with the help of Pantone’s Fashion Color Report. According to the world-renowned authority on color, this selection will include colors that are bright and vivid but also other tones that convey a sense of earthiness. All these hues are reminiscent of the ones that surround us in nature and they are simply incredible.

AN OFFICE WITH AMERICAN ROAD TRIP SCENES Geremia design company developed a new interior project for Metromile car insurance office in San Francisco. This work brings to mind scenes from a classic American road trip movie in a 14,000 square foot space that includes casual discussion areas, a spacious kitchen, and a number of separate meeting rooms. It is divided by large photographic murals and plants, “which creates a warm and enclosed feel within the open plan layout.” The design company follows this nostalgic taste with 70’s references to the mid-century style. A LUXURY RESORT IN FINLAND INSPIRED BY NATURE Privacy, tranquility, and proximity to nature are some of the things you can expect to meet in the Villa Vellamo hotel located in southern Finland, a few meters from Lake Päijänne.

The Villa Vellamo Hotel is situated in the new part of Lehmonkärki Resort complex in Finland. This is a luxurious hotel designed with the aim to be adapted to different demands and customer usage.  This versatility is achieved through several things but is important to highlight the structures of the walls and lighting. In this project, the dynamic nature of the different spaces was explored by the design company  Dsign Vertti Kivi & Co  for one simple reason: the necessity to easily adapt to different occasions such as conferences, holidays or weddings. To give a strong first impression into space, the designers decided to use the Coltrane wall lamp in the long entrance. The presidential suite Complex Villa Vellamo is the perfect union of mysticism and nature. This contemporary presidential villa is composed by a kitchen, dining areas, living rooms and saunas. The villa also offers private beaches, furnished terraces and fireplaces.

/ TBRANDS & CRAFTMANSHIP

There’s no better way to start describing this brand: the name of the brand founded 15 years ago by Wanders and Vissers comes from their native Dutch word for beautiful - mooi.  Since 2001 that Mooi has been inspiring the design world with its unique designs, creating a portfolio that contains a range of work from other nationally and internationally recognized designers besides its founders, such as Jurgen Bey, Bertjan Pot, Maarten Baas, Jaime Hayon, Neri & Hu, Joost van Bleiswijk, Studio Job and Nika Zupanc, amongst others. A brand with such strong values as passion, creativity, dedication and constant improvement couldn’t have less success. Moooi’s style is exclusive, daring, playful and based on the belief that design is a question of love. We dare to say that the uniqueness and character of antiques combined with the freshness of modern times is what establishes this brand as one of the strongest ones in the market of furniture, lighting and accessories design. \ The brand creates interior environments decorated with an inspiring variety of patterns and colors to embrace any kind of space what allows people of different ages, cultures and even personalities to fall in love with it. Since 2013 the company’ art direction is in the hands of Marcel Wanders and Desirée de Jong. Wanders and Vissers maintain an influence in all inclusions to the brand, being both responsible for the overall design selection. From 1 September 2015 onwards Robin Bevers assumed the position of Moooi CEO, taking over this role from Moooi co-founder Casper Vissers. 20 TRENDZINE

CHRISTMAS DECOR TIPS

What better way to plan your Christmas decor than with some professional tips coming from actual interior designers and their personal experience? Working with interior decor all year round, these interior designers have seen and tried it all, so they know how to work their way through Christmas decor to make it look unique and, above all, personal. We’ve gathered a few of their amazing tips, which include using natural elements, vintage pieces or even taking your personal experiences into Christmas ornaments.

/ INTERIOR DESIGN

One of the great things about the first amazing decor tip we have for you is that it still involves pumpkins. But instead of having the plain old carved pumpkin, you should go ahead and make yourself an amazing pumpkin diorama! Not only are they the hottest piece of decor for this Fall, but they’re also pretty much mess-free and super easy to do. Now all you need to figure out is what to put inside your little vignette. In the end, the result can be something quite magical and unique. Next up, there’s a Halloween classic, because classics are what they are for a reason. They are those essential decor pieces that are timeless and look good every time you put them up. So, we went looking for some of the best Halloween wreaths. A wreath is that first Halloween decor piece that people come face to face with first, so you know you have to hang a pretty spooky or a mysterious one. It’s pretty much what sets the tone for your whole home decor this season, so whether you prefer a simple black cat ear wreath or a full on scary snakes’ nest wreath, the important thing is that with our suggestions you’ll be guaranteed to have the best Halloween decor ever. Designer Sara Story says she loves “incorporating natural elements, lights, and a little gold” to her holiday decor, “be it in the ribbons, ornaments or objects”. Magnolia leaves are a few of her favorites, especially when used in wreaths with a few golden details, which “make for an elegant statement on any door”. Miles Redd is also a fan of magnolia leaves and chooses to use it on mantles. The designer intersperses “lemons or clementines, and paper whites - either the individual bulb - or just mossy pots of 6 bulbs”, and “the smell of the combination is wonderful”.

If you want to give your Christmas a quirky and unique touch, go with designer Summer Thornton’s advice: “One thing I do which always stirs conversation is hanging ornaments from my chandeliers. It’s easy to do and adds some great color to the room”. Make it vintage and full of light by following Windsor Smith’s ideas. The designer hangs a “vintage brass and leather sleigh bell horse harness” on his front door, wrapped in evergreens and lights. To give it a continuity and a sense of harmony, the designer does the same on his staircase, “wrapping evergreens and leather straps in those tiny strings of lights that you never have to plug in”. If you’re looking for something a little bit more DYI, think like designers Anne Maxwell Foster and Suysel dePedro Cunningham of Tilton Fenwick Designers, and use leftover fabric scraps to have wreaths made out of them. Their advice, if you don’t feel up to the task? “There are amazing vendors on Easy that will make them for you”, so there’s no excuse to not have beautiful Christmas ornaments. Finally, go with something very personal and unique and, much like interior designer Alessandra Branca, choose a few pieces and ornaments that have a personal and individual meaning. Take her example: “My husband Steve’s last name means a little owl in German, so we have a collection of owl-shaped ornaments”, and don’t forget the ultimate Christmas tip “surround yourself with the people you love and the things that make you smile”

HOUSE TOUR: AN APARTMENT IN KIEV WITH STATEMENT GOLDEN DETAILS

Golden details are the key element in this apartment designed by Dmytro Zhyltsov and located in Russia.

From lighting to walls, golden is used in this apartment project (designed for a former painter in Kiev) as a statement detail (not sure if we can even call it a detail). The designer decided to mix this metal with sober colors such as gray, black and white, what allows golden to be in the spotlight. Modern pieces commingle with mid-century modern design items in a space that is nothing less than perfect for mid-century modern admirers. In the living room, the wood flooring is the perfect bed for a center table with marble top and a black sofa with a contemporary touch of elegance. The cherry on top of the cake is Aretha suspension lamp by DelightFULL , a lighting fixture with delicate and graceful arms and a modern charm.

From the same brand, Sinatra Floor Lamp , inspired by Frank Sinatra. Let’s step to the dining area. Kitchen and dining room emerge to create a great corner to enjoy the meals. To match the golden oval dining table, two round chandeliers also created by DelightFULL. The bedroom is that room in the entire apartment where the designer uses golden the most. One of the walls is completely covered with a mantle of gold carving, right beside other one covered with white-painted tiles, what gives to the bedroom an industrial feeling and an elegant contrast. Minimalist black and golden wall lamps were featured here and it combines perfectly the Carver armchair designed by Essential Home.

UP TO HELSINKY

The seasons of the year all contribute to the soul of the Finnish people, but winter definitely occupies a special place. In the middle of winter the days are short – in northern Finland the sun doesn’t even rise above the horizon for weeks on end! However, when the winter sky is free of clouds, it can turn the most amazing shades of blue. And when everything is covered with snow, it reflects any and all light, seeming to brighten up even the dusk.

HELSINKI AND MID-CENTURY MODERN DESIGN HISTORY Finland and Helsinki were extremely important in the Mid-Century Modern design history. The main reason? Alvar Aalto, a Mid-Century designer and architect whom design principles and works ‘personify’ the Finns’ values. Inspired by their “hero”, the Finns really care about design and architecture - many young people aspire to become architects or designers - and they have a long and valuable history in the art field. Scandinavian and Finnish values in design are mainly related to natural materials, environment respect, organic forms, attention for the object function and quality. Therefore, In Helsinki you can find good design almost everywhere: restaurants, cafes, bookshops and concept stores. This edition we bring you a restaurant and its upstairs bar, both designed by Joanna Laajisto Creative Studio. 32 TRENDZINE

The traditional restaurant König in the heart of Helsinki´s shopping district has undergone a large renovation and concept change. The new restaurant, which opened it´s doors April 14th, 2015 is called “Michel” and has now a lighter colour palette including pistachio green, white and natural wood, using materials intended to appear “light and fresh”. The new menu focuses on “Urban Classics”, casual dishes prepared in a modern way, which customers can enjoy while socializing in the new beautiful surroundings. “The food is a combination of classic European cuisine and new world”, adds CEO Mikko Paukkonen. ImagemIn the heart of the restaurant there is a large marble and stainless steel clad cocktail bar that focuses also on the “Urban Classics” theme. The drinks are both traditional and modern with playful twist.

Joanna Laajisto Creative Studio has designed the new interior for the restaurant. “The objective was to create a comfortable and casual interior that fits the surrounding neighborhood.” Joanna Laajisto says. The renovation was large due to new open kitchen and bathroom locations. Materials of high quality were selected to last time. Ash wood custom millwork and cognac leather upholstery accompanied with white Statuario marble, stainless steel and brass details create a stylish but relaxed atmosphere.  The green wooden wall paneling is inspired by the traditional outdoor kiosk from the 1940´s, that still can be found around Helsinki.  The tabletops with green marble insets are also custom design for the restaurant. Two large round marble Tulip tables, designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll are design classics from the 1950´s. The beech wood seating and bar stools are by Andrew World.  The brass sconces on the tiled walls and downstairs bathrooms are by French manufacturer Atelier Areti. Other decorative light fixtures are by Swedish manufacturer Rubn and Danish &Tradition.

In the brand new basement bathrooms marble and grey plaster walls with dimmed lighting create a pleasant ambiance. The custom sinks are designed to look like pieces of furniture by Laajisto. Faucets and other fixtures are by Danish Vola.

UPSTAIRS – NIGHT-CLUB LE ROY

Club Le Roy is located upstairs to Michel restaurant, and was also designed by Laajisto and her team (both establishments are owned by the same proprietor). Instead of designing a typical dark nightclub, where Joanna admits she personally doesn’t like spending time in, she set out to create a space that felt more like a “grand apartment” with different rooms to hang out in. The focus for the design were the large original windows found on both sides of the building. In order to recreate an authentic residential feel, walls were clad in different style of panels painted in grey tones. “We wanted to create a classic look that fits the original building, built in 1892 by Architect K.A. Wrede,” explains Joanna. Her team designed a series of custom items for the interior such as the banquette sofas upholstered in green velvet, small tables in black marble, and brass and marble bars. The lights used throughout the club are from Rubn and Atelier Areti, many of which were custom fitted for the space. Lounge chairs and loose sofas are from Maxalto, and small tables in green marble.

RUDOLPH SCHINDLER (1887-1953)

“He has built quite a number of buildings in and around Los Angeles that seem to be admirable from the standpoint of design, and I have not heard of any of them falling down”. — Wright

BIOGRAPHY Schindler was born from a middle-class family in Vienna, Austria. He attended the Imperial and Royal High School, from 1899 to 1906, then enrolled in the Wagnersschule of Vienna Polytechnic University, graduating in 1911 with a degree in architecture. Schindler worked for Hans and Theodore Mayer from 1911 to 1914. Encouraged by fellow Austrian architect Adolph Loos, Schindler moved to Chicago in 1914 to work for Ottenheimer Stern and Reichert. In 1916, he delivered 12 elaborate lectures at the Church School of Design in Chicago which became known as the Schindler “Program,” his central design philosophy. Schindler always wanted to work for  Frank Lloyd Wright and in late 1918 Wright hired him. After Wright obtained the commission for the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, a major project that involved being in Japan for several years, Schindler was promoted to run Wright’s American operations out of the Oak Park IL studio. In 1919, Schindler met and married Pauline Gibling (18931977) and in 1920 Wright sent Schindler west to Los Angeles to work on the Aline Barnsdall House. Beyond his job for Wright, Schindler started his own independent practice in 1922. Because of this issue and the two men’s massive egos, Schindler and Wright argued frequently and eventually separated as architects. Richard Neutra worked for Wright, in 1924, at Taliesin East but left after a few months to work in California with Schindler. Neutra shared space in Schindler’s house with their wives. Their firm was called Schindler and Neutra, then later AGIC (the Architectural Group for Industry and Commerce). Philip Johnson famously rejected Schindler’s inclusion in the 1932 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art because he felt Schindler was outside the International Style. Schindler responded by rejecting the categorizing of his designs as part of any style. Schindler and Neutra’s relationship began to unravel, and the Neutra’s moved out. They rarely interacted after that. When Neutra had a heart attack in 1953, he found himself in the same hospital room as Schindler who was dying of cancer. They made their peace before Schindler died. The Schindlers divorced in the 1930’s, however Pauline Schindler returned to the Kings Road house after a few years and stayed there until her death in 1977. They had one son, Mark, in 1922. Schindler was a leader in the creative class in Los Angeles, a true bohemian. He hung out with celebrities in film, art, sculpture, and dance.
