delighted images PHOTOGRAPHING THE LIGHT WITHIN Congratulations on your engagement! There is something kind of crazy awesome about finding the person you want to be with forever. This early planning phase is a time to be enjoyed. Remember the little moments that made your heart flutter. Remember the lame jokes you told each other that tickled out belly laughs. And remember the strength you’ve given each other in times of heartbreak. Your wedding is the physical manifestation of all those moments that make your relationship unique. The wedding day is one of only a few days in life when ten hours can feel like only two. Months of planning culminates in a single event. When it’s all over, your wedding photographs are one of the few things you’ll get to keep. From the details, to authentic emotions, to creating striking portraits, I strive to document the story of your wedding. I look forward to helping you tell your love story.
While I occasionally work on styled shoots with models and a team of vendors to create inspiration, all of the people in this publication are real, non-model couples during real shoots or weddings under real time and space constraints.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS PICKING THE SESSION THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU
SESSION FOR JUST YOU AND YOUR FIANCÉ. HAVING A COUPLE’ S SESSION BEFORE YOUR WEDDING IS SO IMP ORTANT TO THE SUCCESS OF YOUR WEDDING PORTRAIT SESSION.
During this session, we will work together under a low pressure situation to learn how to communicate best with each other and the best angles and poses to flatter your body types together. The session is meant to be really fun and portray the best version of the two of you. This means we’ll do whatever you feel makes you quintessentially you. Working together before your wedding helps us gain trust and confidence, so that by the time your wedding day arrives, you can rest assured knowing that you won’t have to worry about your wedding photos.
Because all Delighted Couples agree that the couple’s session before the wedding was so helpful, a standard session is included in the Ultimate Base Collection. With four different length options and two additional session styles available, it’s easy to find the session that’s right for you. And, once you decide on your session type, the fun really begins with your custom concept and the shoot!

For couples who need a do over, or couples who loved the experience so much they want to do it again. An Encore Session is any session that takes place after
the wedding. While an Encore Session can be applied to any session length (see pages 15-18), if you are looking for a redo because your wedding photos did not turn out as you hoped, I recommend booking the longest session (Pre-Wedding Session). We’ll need plenty of time to recreate as much as we can without throwing a second wedding. This includes the getting ready photos, lay-down shots of the dress(es), tux, and accessories, and individual and couple’s portraits. Shorter Encore Sessions are only recommended for couples celebrating their anniversaries or those who want to relive the portrait session of their wedding day.

THINGS TO CONSIDER TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE.
F I R S T A N D M O S T I M P O R TA N T LY, WH E N? The time of the shoot can sometimes dictate the quality of images. The more comfortable you are, and the more clean the background is, the more we can use our time to create different looks for your gallery. The ideal shooting environment is clean with few crowds. This means shooting in locations that are secluded, at unpopular times like dawn or in the middle of the night, and shooting on non-holiday weekdays. This is especially important if one or both of you are a little shy in front of the camera or groups. Nothing calls for more attention than a well-dressed couple being followed by a photographer!
TIME OF DAY Sunsets are gorgeous, and here on the West Coast, they’re unbeatable especially for those ideal romantic and airy photos. In the summer, sunsets are later in the day and last longer. Couple sessions are typically planned around sunset to maximize the variety in your gallery. Depending on your preferred aesthetic, the majority of the photo session will take place either before or after the sunset. For popular locations, a beautiful sunset is thwarted by crowds, and in that case, sunrise is the next best thing.
LOCATION Pick your location based on what’s meaningful to you as a couple—first date, first vacation, where you fell in love. Once we have an idea of the location that is significant to you, we’ll either use it or try to recreate the feel of the destination. If your first date was at the Palace of Fine Arts, we’ll bare the crowds and take a few shots there, but if you’re looking for popular landmarks in San Francisco, let me know and we’ll find creative ways to capture iconic locations while minimizing crowd interference. Keep in mind that many locations will require a permit to shoot. For couples that have an appreciation for the natural beauty of our planet, the Wanderlust Love Sessions is probably the style for you, and I’ll happily waive travel fees for an epic, #wanderlust worthy shoot.
H A I R , M A K E U P, A N D OTHER APPOINTMENTS TO MAKE Maximize your hair and makeup trial appointment by scheduling it before our photo session. and plenty of flannel! If you are hoping to have your photo session published, just remember three important things: details, details, details. Publishers want all the juicy details! Regardless of your goals of publication, remember to pick a theme that is meaningful to your love story and keep it timeless.
BASIC, BUT IMPORTANT QUICK TIPS: 1. Don’t be self-conscious. Focus on having fun and enjoying the experience. Leave the worrying up to me and let me sort out the bad photos. Being self-conscious is creatively distracting and brings negativity into the session. 2. Be realistic about enduring the environment of the session. If you’re requesting a specific look to your photos, be prepared to deal with the reality of the look. Example: you love the look of vast and dunes, but don’t want to touch sand, maybe the dunes aren’t for you. I never want anyone to feel unsafe or uncomfortable with the session, so it can be conflicting to try to move you on to more advanced poses and looks if you continue to express that you’re cold or in discomfort. Unless you want to wrap up the session, try to focus on the positive. 3. All pets are welcome, but be mindful of your pet’s abilities. I love incorporating furry family members, but be realistic about your pet’s ability to obey commands and/ or be off leash. Untrained pets can cost us a lot of time and limit the number of varied photos you’ll get. I recommend adding more time if your pet is untrained. 4. Most importantly, “no” and any form of it is the fastest way to kill the session. Creativity is the key to the session from my point of view. When a subject says “I don’t know about that pose” or “I don’t think that will work”, there’s no place to go but backwards from there to find where the client is comfortable again. See number 1 if you feel like saying no. Though this rarely occurs because of my vetting early on, when “no” creeps in to the session, it’s basically over. Here is an example of a challenging session where the conditions were extremely windy and cold by the coast in early February, and their happy pup was playful and distracted, but with a few treats and positivitely throughout, this couple handled the discomfort expertly.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION TO HELP YOU COORDINATE, NOT MATCH
YOUR COUPLE’S SESSION IS ALL ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHING THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF TOGETHER. JUST AS THE SCENERY IS SELECTED TO REPRESENT YOUR INTERESTS AND LOVE STORY, YOUR OUTFITS SHOULD SHOW OFF A CLEAR SENSE OF ST YLE. MOST SESSIONS ALLOW FOR AT LEAST ONE OUTFIT CHANGE. SEE PAGES 15-18 FOR DETAILS. MANY COUPLES MAXIMIZE THE DIVERSIT Y IN THEIR GALLERY BY BRINGING A FORMAL OR ETHNICALLY SIGNIFICANT OUTFIT, AND A WELL POLISHED CASUAL OUTFIT. IT’S IMPORTANT THAT YOU COORDINATE YOUR LOOK TO COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER, BUT NOT MATCH.

HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER ABOUT PLANNING AND EXECUTING THE DETAILS FOR THE DAY.
Mapping Out Your Wedding Day continued I create a photography timeline for all of my event clients. The photography timeline has all the details of the day and notes specific to me and my team during each event to ensure that we are ready for the action. When we are well prepared and informed, we have more opportunities to capture the moment, the people watching the moment, and to be creative. When we have a well organized plan, my team and I can be proactive instead of reactive.
Creating the photography timeline starts with a simple

wedding party, should be designated to make decisions throughout
We wait until six weeks before so that most of your other vendors
have been booked and big decisions have already been made. We want to find the sweet spot between a tentative vendor plan and hard set plans. If you have a wedding planner, you’re already on the right track! I will still need to go over the timeline specifically for photography because planners, while helpful, don’t have the specific knowledge needed to consider all the aspects of getting the perfect shots. We’ll make minor changes if necessary and if the changes aren’t possible, I’ll let you know what you’re missing out on so there are no surprises later. A sample Photography Timeline is shown on page 30 to give you an idea of the level of detail my team and I use in our plans based on my consultation with you. If you do not have a wedding coordinator, contrary to popular belief, your venue coordinator is not a wedding coordinator. of a good wedding coordinator is a seamless day without letting their presence be felt. Look for a person or team who knows their role is behind the scenes and to provide support to the other vendors by allowing them to do the best work they can for you. This person/team does not dress flashy or wear impractical clothing on a wedding day because their job calls for a lot of dirty work and running around. A pushy, rigid, or inexperienced coordinator is worse than not having one at all. One mark of an inexperienced coordinator is being rigid about the order of the day’s events. Things are bound to get off track, despite good planning, if your guests are having fun. I’ve had enough experience to be able to cover all the reception events in a different order if the party is lively or waning. Keeping the atmosphere flowing during the reception is key to catching authentic moments. Breaking up the party to just to stick to a timeline is a bad call. A good coordinator comes from a place of

PHOTOGRAPHING THE LIGHT WITHIN
Here is an exercise to help you think about the details, both minor and major, for the day. Think about overlapping events, who will be responsible for what, the behind the scenes details and how the day will look for your guests. Ask yourself, if your MOH or Videographer read it, are the parts that are relevant to them obvious? Don’t worry, this is just an exercise to prepare you for the minute details. And I check over all my clients’ timelines for oversights and impracticalities.

IS YOUR SHOOTING ST YLE POSED OR PHOTOJOURNALISTIC? Both. I give my clients direction during the session to photograph their best features in the most flattering light. While I may guide you, the image may still appear photojournalistic. I will usually ask you to do something simple together like whisper a joke her ear. During the ceremony, I am purely photojournalistic and only find authentic moments. During the reception, I am both photojournalistic and may ask for smiling group shots. My goal is to deliver photos that show all the joy and love you and your family experience during the wedding while making sure everyone looks good!
As an artist, I am very motivated to create beautiful, original photos that I’m proud to share. When clients book me for both their wedding and engagement session, I’m flexible with the time because I shoot for both you and me—creating images I know you’ll love, and experimenting with new techniques that may just be incredible. But if you don’t want your photos shared, there is no need for extra time during the session. Admittedly, it does kill the drive a little when a client wants to abstain from the model release. I prefer to obtain a model release from all clients; however, I respect the request for privacy. Since all of my advertising is through publication of real couples on my blog and social media, a percentage of the total package price will be charged as a lost opportunity fee for abstaining from the model release. The fee also covers the inflated rate I must pay my second shooter(s) for them to forgo use of their images.

of questions from me. These questions really get to the heart of the basics you’ll need for coverage of your wedding. I give my clients very high quality work and attention that exceed the rates I charge because I feel that the relationship is very important in achieving the best and most genuine photos from your wedding. Part of that relationship is a mutual respect. While I respect and understand limitations with a wedding budget, I also know that I provide high quality, luxury services, with many á la carte options for flexibility. I am often flexible about swapping products and services to give you what you need, but my pricing and policies are firm. Please do not ask me to devalue myself by negotiating price. My time has always been best spent with clients who respect and recognize the value of my work.
DISCOUNTS ASIDE, WHAT IS A DREAM WEDDING THAT YOU WOULD SHOOT FOR FREE? I really enjoy working with genuinely kind and positive people who are in love with each other. No joke. With my background in law working with people in dire straits, the switch to working with people happy in love is such a big part of the benefits of this career. My ideal wedding is a small intimate gathering of the couple’s closest family and friends in an organically beautiful setting like Zion National Park, the Amalfi Coast, or the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. The wedding would be surrounded with natural beauty and emphasizing only everyone’s love and support for what truly matters, the couple’s new start together.
