Chemical Energy Storage

Chemistry of HighEnergy Materials

Energy – in the headlines, discussed controversially, vital.

This graduate-level textbook treats the basic chemistry of high energy materials – primary and secondary explosives, propellants, rocket fuel and pyrotechnics – and provides a review of new research developments. Applications in both military and civil fields are discussed. The book also offers new insights into “green” chemistry requirements and strategies for military applications. This work should be of interest to advanced students in chemistry, materials science and engineering, as well as all those working in defense technology.

The use of regenerative energy in many primary forms leads to the necessity to store grid dimensions for maintaining continuous supply and enabling the replacement of fossil fuel systems. This work provides a hands-on insight into the present status of energy conversion and deals with aspects of chemical energy storage considering the geosphere, electrochemistry, catalysis, synthesis of catalysts, functional analysis of catalytic processes and the interface between electrochemistry and heterogeneous catalysis. ff The

book will be a trendsetter the energy challenge needs focused cooperation of several academic disciples: chemistry, materials science, biotechnology, physics, and engineering ff The book explains aspects of chemical energy storage in the context of the sensitivity of the geosphere to modifications in the carbon (and other element) cycle (e.g., greenhouse effect) ff E10, biofuel, bioethanol are in the daily breaking news ff Gives a good practice-oriented review of what is feasible at industrial level – potential and risk ff Solving

Many objects of physical, biological, and industrial interest include randomly distributed nanoscale nonuniformities, e.g., nanoparticles. Their characterization online in dynamic industrial processes and in situ in biological systems faces serious practical challenges when the rapid formation and distribution of nanoparticles takes place. This book discusses optical methods – the best tools for nanoparticle monitoring, as they are fast, noninvasive, and provide a broad range of information in real time – and their application in molecular biology and nanotechnology. ff Unique

method to measure nonuniformities concentration and determine particle size. ff Essential technique for advances in nanotechnology and medical diagnostics and therapies. ff The interdisciplinary approach of this book is possible only with enough insights in all involved disciplines (physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, molecular biology and materials science). ff No current book competes with this material. Antol Brodsky, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA. Keywords Analytical Chemistry, Nanotechnology, Physical Chemistry, Spectroscopy Language English

This specialist monograph provides an overview of the recent research on the fundamental and applied properties of nanoparticles extracted from cellulose, the most abundant polymer on the planet and an essential renewable resource. Given the rapid advancements in the field and the high level of interest within the scientific and industrial communities, this timely book will be required reading for all those working with nanocellulose in the life sciences and bio-based applications, biological, chemical and agricultural engineering, organic chemistry and materials science. The author pioneered the use of cellulose nanoparticles (cellulose nanocrystals or whiskers and cellulose microfibrils) in nanocomposite applications. The book combines a general introduction to cellulose and basic techniques with more advanced chapters on specific properties and applications of nanocellulose. ff Overview

of essential techniques such as preparation of cellulose whiskers and chemical modification of nanocellulose ff Description of the thermal, mechanical, barrier and swelling properties of nanocellulose-based nanocomposites Alain Dufresne, Grenoble Institute of Technology, Saint Martin d’Hères, France.

Mechanics of Paper Products This graduate level textbook focuses on the mechanical properties and performance of products made of fiber-based materials such as paper and board. The book aims to help students develop effective skills for solving problems of product performance and engineering challenges in new product development. Therefore the material is organized with a problembased approach – a practical example of product performance is presented and then the relevant mechanics are analysed to deduce which material properties control the performance. The connection between these material properties and the manufacturing process and raw materials is also reviewed. The mechanics of product end-use, converting and the mechanisms of material deformation and damage are treated. The reader should have a good understanding of general engineering mechanics, mathematical concepts and numerical modelling methods. Marine Fungi and Fungal-like Organisms Marine fungi play a major role in marine and mangrove ecosystems. Understanding how higher fungi with their spectrum of cellulolytic and ligninolytic enzymes degrade wood tissue, while labyrinthuloids and thraustochytrids further contribute to the dissolved organic matter entering the open ocean is essential to marine ecology. This work provides an overview of marine fungi including morphology and ultrastructure, phylogeny, biogeography and biodiversity. Increasingly, biotechnology is also turning to these organisms to develop new bioactive compounds and to address problems such as decomposition of materials in the ocean and bioremediation of oil spills. These potential applications of marine fungi are also treated. Handbuch der Zoologie / Handbook of Zoology Eine Naturgeschichte der Stämme des Tierreiches / A Natural History of the Phyla of the Animal Kingdom

Begründet von Willy Kükenthal; Fortgeführt von Max Beier, Maximilian Fischer, Johann-Gerhard Helmcke, Dietrich Starck, Heinz Wermuth The renowned German reference work The Handbuch der Zoologie/Handbook of Zoology was founded in the 1920’s by Professor Willi Kükenthal in Berlin and treated the complete animal kingdom from single cell organisms to mammals in eight thematic volumes: Volume I Protozoa, Porifera, Colenteratea, Mesozoa (1925); Volume II Worms (1933/34); Volume III Arthropoda ex. Insecta (1927/1932); Volume IV Arthopoda: Insecta; Volume V Solenogastres, Mollusca, Echinoderma (1925); Volume VI Pisces / Amphibia (1930); Volume VII Reptilia / Aves (1931); Volume VIII Mammalia. The Volumes Insecta (Eds. N.P. Kristensen, R.G. Beutel) and Mammalia (Eds. M.S. Fischer, H. Schliemann) continued publication into the present with the most recent contributions in English language. Covering nearly 100 years of zoological research, the Handbook of Zoology represents a vast store of knowledge. But with the speed of scientific discovery in the past decades, a new edition of the Handbook in a new form is required. Beginning in 2010 the Handbook of Zoology will be restructured and offered additionally as a database (Zoology Online) which can be easily searched and rapidly updated. The eight thematic volumes will be replaced with smaller and more flexible groupings that reflect the current state of phylogenetic knowledge. Faster publication times through online-prepublication, reference linking, forward linking and multimedia presentations will make the Handbook of Zoology highly attractive to both authors and users. Aims and Scope The Handbook of Zoology aims to provide an in depth treatment of the entire animal kingdom from the lower invertebrates to the mammals. It publishes comprehensive overviews on animal systematics and morphology as well as extensive coverage of physiology, behaviour, ecology and applied aspects of zoological research. Volumes in progress include Nemathelminthes and Gnathifera, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda, Arthropoda: Insecta, and Mammalia. Although our knowledge regarding many taxonomic groups has grown enormously over the last decades, it is still the ambition of the Handbook to be comprehensive in the sense that text and references together provide a solid basis for further research. Editors and authors seek a balance between describing species richness and diversity, explaining the importance of certain groups in a phylogenetic context and presenting a review of available knowledge and up-to-date reference literature. New contributions to the series present the combined effort of an international team of editors and authors, entirely published in English and explicitly addressing the international scientific community.

Nannochoristidae (=Nannomecoptera) and Boreidae (=Neomecoptera) are traditionally assigned to the holometabolan order Mecoptera. Both are presently in the focus of insect systematists. They differ strikingly from the “typical” mecopteran pattern, not only in their larval and adult morphology, but also in their life style and reproductive biology. Phylogenetic affinities between Boreidae (“snow fleas”) and fleas have been postulated mainly based on molecular data, while morphological characters related to food uptake and larval features suggest a close relationship between Nannochoristidae and true flies. Both groups display fascinating features such as preferred temperatures around 0°C, extremely slender larvae adapted to running water, and a highly unusual mating behaviour. Despite the extremely low number of known species, there is no doubt that both groups are key taxa and in their own way highlights in the evolution of the extremely successful Holometabola. Their interesting characteristics and the impressive number of recent studies on various aspects of Nannochoristidae and Boreidae justifies a new volume in the Handbook of Zoology. ff Key

taxa in the evolution of the Holometabola insect groups ff Of high significance to those working in phylogenic systematics ff Unusual characteristics such as low temperature preferences and larval adaption to running water are highly interesting to entomologists ff Large number of new studies are condensed and reviewed in the Handbook of Zoology Rolf G. The database Zoology Online which grew out of the Handbook of Zoology can be easily searched and rapidly updated to reflect the current state of phylogenetic knowledge. The original Handbook material (ca. 28,000 pages) has been reordered along taxonomic (instead of bibliographical) categories and forms the historical basis of the database. The material can be accessed through taxonomic and subject categories as well as free text, with a diversity of linking and search options. New and updated entries in 2011 from projects in progress will include Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Archaeognatha, Nannomecoptera, Neomecoptera, Dermaptera, Mantophasmatodea, Chelicerata, Malacostraca, Annelida, Nemathelminthes and Gnathifera and Mollusca followed later by fishes, reptiles and mammals.

ONLINE/PURCHASE OPTION AIMS AND SCOPE

2010. ONE-TIME PURCHASE OF BASE CONTENT,

Zoology Online aims to provide an in depth treatment of the entire animal kingdom from lower invertebrates to the mammals. Although our knowledge regarding many taxonomic groups has grown enormously over the last decades, it is still the ambition of Zoology Online to be comprehensive in the sense that text and references together provide a solid basis for further research.

Computer Simulation in Physics and Engineering This work is a needed reference for widely used techniques and methods of computer simulation in physics and other disciplines, such as materials science. Molecular dynamics computes a molecule’s reactions and dynamics based on physical models; Monte Carlo uses random numbers to image a system’s behaviour when there are different possible outcomes with related probabilities. The work conveys both the theoretical foundations as well as applications and “tricks of the trade”, that often are scattered across various papers. Strip-Method for Image and Signal Transformation This work deals with the matrix methods of continuous signal and image processing according to which strip-transformation is used. The authors suggest ways to solve a problem of evaluating potential noise immunity and synthesis of an optimal filter for the case of pulse noises, of applying the two-dimensional strip-transformation for storage and noise immune transmission of images. The striptransformation of images is illustrated by examples and classes of images invariant relative to symmetrical orthogonal transformations are given. The monograph is intended for scientists and specialists whose activities are connected with computer signals and images processing, instrumentation and metrology. It can also be used by undergraduates, as well as by post-graduates for studying computer methods of signal and image processing.

Spaces of Dynamical Systems

The Dirac Equation and its Solutions

Dynamical systems are abundant in theoretical physics and engineering. Their understanding, with sufficient mathematical rigor, is vital to solving many problems. This work conveys the modern theory of dynamical systems in a didactically developed fashion.

Dirac equations are of fundamental importance for relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics. In relativistic quantum mechanics, the Dirac equation is referred to as one-particle wave equation of motion for electron in an external electromagnetic field. In quantum electrodynamics, exact solutions of this equation are needed to treat the interaction between the electron and the external field exactly.

In addition to topological dynamics, structural stability and chaotic dynamics, also generic properties and pseudotrajectories are covered, as well as nonlinearity. The author is an experienced book writer and his work is based on years of teaching. ff Conveys

Alexei L. Rebenko

Theory of Interacting Quantum Fields This book is devoted to the systematic and encyclopedic presentation of the foundations of quantum field theory. One important significant feature of this monograph is a desire of the author to represent mathematical problems of the quantum field theory with regard for the new methods of the constructive and Euclidean field theory formed for the last thirty years of the 20th century on the basis of rigorous mathematical tools of the functional analysis, the theory of operators, and the theory of generalized functions. This monograph may be useful for students, postgraduate students, and young scientists who desire to understand not only the formal structure of the quantum field theory but also its basic concepts and connection with classical mechanics, relativistic classical field theory, quantum mechanics, group theory, and the theory of functional integration. ff A

systematic, encyclopedic and methodical presentation of the fundamentals of modern quantum field theory ff Very comprehensive coverage – from particle symmetries to quantum gauge fields ff Conveys a thorough overview of all relevant topics and places them in context with one another ff Numerous end of chapter exercises; solutions also included Alexei L. Rebenko, Kiev University, Ukraine.
