Abgebildete Person: Ada E. Yonath The images that adorn our catalog covers are the product of a design competition that is carried out each year by De Gruyter in cooperation with Lette Verein Berlin, a vocational training association. Participants in the competition were asked to design a series of images which visually reflect the spirit of each subject area while also remaining thematically linked. We would like to thank the winner Marta Moreno Crespo for her winning entry. Her images feature prominent figures from various academic fields. Metal ions are tightly regulated in human health: while essential to human life, they are potentially toxic as well.In the latest volume of the prestigious Metal Ions in Life Science series the potential benefits, as well as toxicities, of the administration of metal ions to humans, and the role of metal ions in biology, biochemistry and human disease, are discussed.
Visible light is an abundant source of energy. While the conversion of light energy into electrical energy (photovoltaics) is highly developed and commercialized, the use of visible light in chemical synthesis is far less explored. Chemical photocatalysts that mimic principles of biological photosynthesis utilize visible light to drive endothermic or kinetically hindered reactions. The Few-Body Problem in Dynamic Systems
The few-body problem (FBP), the essence of which is the Schrödinger equation is not solvable for more than two interacting particles. Atomic collisions are ideally suited to study the FBP because the underlying force is essentially understood and because simple systems can be studied for which kinematically complete experiments are feasible. The book would cover various experimental and theoretical approaches in atomic collision research. Michael Schulz, Missouri University of Science & Technology, Missouri, USA. ADVANCED MATERIALS
GREEN ELECTROSPINNING
Advanced Materials gives an unique insign into the specialized materials that are required to run our modern society. Provided within are the fundamental theories and applications of advanced materials for ceramics, metals, glasses, polymers, composites, and nanomaterials. This book is ideal for scientist and engineers of materials science, chemistry, physics, and engineering, and students of these disciplines.
The last two decades have seen electrospinning of nanofibers performed mainly from solutions of toxic organic solvents. The increase in demand for scaling up electrospinning in recent years therefore requires an environmentally friendly process free of organic solvents. This book addresses techniques for clean and safe electrospinning in the fabrication of green nanofibers and their potential applications.
SMART RUBBERS Synthesis and Applications
Research into ‘smart rubbers’, i. e. elastomeric materials that respond to external stimuli, has increased dramatically recently, predominantly due to the growing need for improved materials for new applications. This book aims to provide an overview over the field of smart rubber research. Examples of the various components involved in smart rubbers are highlighted and discussed. Different types of stimuli and numerous applications are explained.

FALLING FILMS IN DESALINATION A Computational Approach
This book covers the simulation of evaporating saltwater falling films with and without turbulence wires. The methods presented within can be applied to a variety of applications including the food and pharmaceutical industry, as well as in nuclear technology. This topic is ideal for researchers in chemical engineering.
Intensified processes have found widespread application in the chemical and petrochemical industries. The use of intensified systems allows for a reduction of operating costs and supports the “greening” of chemical processes. However, the design of intensified equipment requires special methodologies. This book describes the fundamentals and applications of these design methods, making it a valuable resource for use in both industry and academia.
The 5th volume of Green Chemical Processing considers sustainable chemistry in the context of governmental and corporate interests, explaining how “red tape” can help or hinder the “greening” of industry processes. The American Chemical Society’s 12 Principles of Green Chemistry are woven throughout this text as well as the series to which this book belongs.

FLEXIBLE POLYURETHANE FOAMS
INDUSTRIELLE ANWENDUNGEN DER SPEKTROSKOPIE
POLYMERIC COMPOSITES WITH RICE HULLS
A Practical Guide
[Industrial Applications of Spectroscopy]
An Introduction
Flexible and viscoelastic polyurethane foams have enormous potential as viable business ventures and have replaced many traditional materials used in everyday life. This book describes the chemistry of flexible and viscoelastic polyurethane foams as well as calculations and formulating methodology for quality production. The author presents detailed information on foam manufacturing, based on over 45 years of hands-on industry experience.
Polymeric composites with rice hulls have superior properties compared with other polymer composites and are suitable for a wider range of applications. This book explains what it is that makes polymeric composites with rice hulls ideal substitutes for natural wood and how they may help ease global environmental concerns. It is an ideal source of information for researchers, resin-pellet manufacturers, processors and end users.

Optische Spektroskopie; Pharmazeutische Industrie; Kunststoffindustrie
The combined application of spectroscopic methods has proven particularly effective in analytical chemistry. The techniques of absorption spectroscopy and mass spectrometry show the enduring relevance of the chemical analysis of prescription medications, plastics, dyes, and pesticides despite its long history. This book spells out which methods in which cases produce the most comprehensive results.
