PERSPECTIVES ON JEWISH TEXTS AND CONTEXTS (PJTC) By focusing on the Jewish textual traditions, this peer-reviewed book series examines both the continuity of a tradition through its transmission of canonical, classical and contemporary texts, as well as the ways that a tradition must continuously adapt itself to respond to new intellectual, historical, social and political contexts. Since there is no reading that is not also an interpretation, imbuing the past with concerns of the present day, the volumes in this series examine the Jewish textual tradition through questions of its transmissibility, focusing on how these texts give rise to new commentaries, translations and adaptations. THE GERMANHEBREW DIALOGUE

MOVABLE INN

Studies of Encounter and Exchange

The book presents the results of a systematic survey, the first of its kind, on the rural Jews in the Minsk Guberniya, from its establishment as a major administrative unit within the Russian Empire in 1793, to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

In the past fifty years, the relationship of German and Israeli cultures has evolved from one of mutual estrangement to one of mutual fascination. This volume will be the first one dedicated to the outgrowth of this exchange: ‘German-Hebrew Studies’. The collection will expose the contours of this new field and reveal its potential to redefine the disciplinary boundaries to which German and Hebrew linguistic cultures are traditionally confined. Sportgeschichte; Wien

Based on information about more than 600 Viennese Jewish officials, the book examines issues related to the self-characterization and outside characterization of Jews in Vienna. Sports are an important part of urban identity politics, providing a multifaceted image of engagement with Jewish “difference.” The study focuses on mass consumption sports, especially football, but includes swimming, boxing, and workers’ sports.

BEING JEWISH IN 21ST CENTURY GERMANY NOW IN PAPERBACK

The unexpected immigration wave from the former Soviet Union has stabilized and enlarged Jewish life in Germany up from the 1990ies. No doubt: Jews will continue to live in Germany. But what does it mean to live a Jewish life in present Germany? How is it reflected in culture? Who are the new Jewish elites, and how successful is the fight against old and new forms of anti-Semitism? 20 authors look for answers on these and on related questions. JUDEN UND NICHT-JUDEN NACH DER SHOAH [Jews and Non-Jews after the Shoah: Encounters in Germany] Begegnungen in Deutschland

Given what we know about Nazi crimes of violence, it is hard for us to imagine encounters between Jews and non-Jews after 1945. Yet many connections developed between Holocaust survivors, refugees, hangers-on, observers, and profiteers. The volume examines relationships in civil society between Jewish and non-Jewish Germans from a historical and cultural historical perspective.

JÜDISCHE GESCHICHTE IN BAYERN

ZIONISM, THE GERMAN EMPIRE, AND AFRICA

JEWISH MANUSCRIPT CULTURES

[Jewish History in Bavaria: From its Beginnings to the Present Day]

Jewish Metamorphoses and the Colors of Difference

New Perspectives

Von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart

This volume focuses on the status of research on Hebrew manuscript culture and includes manuscripts written in other Jewish scripts or languages such as Aramaic, Judaeo-Arabic or Yiddish. The work spans 17 academic papers dealing with the state of the art in areas such as codicology and palaeography, manuscript and book collections, illuminations and fragments, and the material analysis of manuscripts.

Situating the short-lived but influential Zionist satirical magazine Schlemiel in an extensive network of nodal clusters of varying and shifting significance that roughly encompasses the three decades from 1890 to 1920, Zionism, the German Empire, and Africa explores the impact on the self-perception and culture of early Zionism of contemporary constructions of racial difference and of the experience of colonialism in imperial Germany.

For the first time, this work comprehensively examines Jewish history in Bavaria. Rolf Kießling describes and analyzes the history of the regions of Franconia, Swabia, and Old Bavaria in a study that extends from the Middle Ages to the Shoah and beyond. Kießling does not present Jewish history as a mere prelude Nazism, but instead considers diverse developments ranging from persecution to acceptance.

DIASPORIC CONSTRUCTIONS OF HOME AND BELONGING NOW IN PAPERBACK

Our globalised world is shaped by migration, with large numbers of individuals and groups or even nations on the move. Stable concepts of home and belonging have become the exception rather than the rule. Academic engagements with diaspora, too, have long attended more to the notion of dispersal rather than settlement. This book widens the traditional focus of diaspora studies by extending it to the diasporic construction of home and belonging. Zionismus; Israel

In 1892, Max Nordau (1849–1923) met Theodor Herzl, whose efforts toward the foundation of the Jewish State he supported wholeheartedly. Nordau quickly became a leader of the Zionist movement. At the first Zionist Congress in 1897, he was a major author of the Basel Program. Nordau’s speeches and newspaper articles, presented for the first time in such abundance, show him as a fearless pioneer, fighter, and admonisher. Zionism; Israel

This pioneering handbook is presenting Israel in its intellectual controversies regarding Zionism, the making of the State of Israel and contemporary Israeli society. In more than a dozen of thematic sections, a wide range of perspectives is covered. POLITICS OF POLEMICS: MARCIN CZECHOWIC ON THE JEWS

“Politics of Polemics” adds a new chapter to the history of the relations between Jews and Christians in early-modern Poland. Focusing on anti-Jewish polemics authored by Marcin Czechowic, a leader of a Radical Protestant sect known as the Arians, the book explores the rhetorical and political function of references to Jews and Judaism, offering an insight into the theology and social history of the Arian movement. Magdalena Luszczynska, Mandel Scholion Center, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.

The volume is a comprehensive evaluation of epistemic, practical, veridical issues from the perspective of every kind of failure, disruption, or confusion that comes under the general rubric of “error.” The analysis is not limited to the element of negativity, but rather, an inquiry about the extent that error can be transformed into a starting point or precondition for successful epistemic practices.

MOSES UND HOMER [Moses and Homer: Greeks, Jews, Germans – A Different History of German Culture] Griechen, Juden, Deutsche: Eine andere Geschichte der deutschen Kultur

Jewish tradition has been largely repressed from German cultural memory. From educating the aesthetic person to the Shoah, the book traces the development of a discourse that idealized the “beautiful person” and the “creative individual” and thereby led to the suppression of monotheism and the foundation of a secular religiosity, paving the way toward the “völkisch” ideology of National Socialism. PASSAGES OF BELONGING Interpreting Jewish Literatures

In the wake of the spatial and affective turns, this volume calls attention to the intensities of sense of place and belonging in a moving landscape of 20th and 21st century literatures, Jewish and other. It brings together contemporary writers and literary scholars who map these intensities onto bodily word worlds in transit, textures of habitable space in passage. Their work charts new terrain for literary criticism and Jewish literary thought.

LUDWIG STRAUSS: AN APPROACH TO HIS BILINGUAL “PARALLEL POEMS”

Spatial Turn

The book is an interpretative commentary on the “parallel poems” of Ludwig Strauss created between 1934 and 1952 in Palestine/Israel and which exist in two variants, a Hebrew and a German version, one of which is the original and the other a self-translation. The study of these experiments with self-translation, by which Strauss aimed at establishing a dialogue of languages, explores his view of poetry as a “fore-image” of the true community.

DIE ZIONISTISCHE KOMÖDIE IM DRAMA SAMMY GRONEMANNS

FRAGILE SPACES

ERNST LISSAUER

Forays into Jewish Memory, European History and Complex Identities

[Zionist Comedy in the Dramatic Works of Sammy Gronemanns: On the origins and unique features of a latent genre]

This book covers the complex crises, tensions and dilemmas but also the positive potential in the meeting of Jews with Western culture. In numerous contexts and through the work of fascinating thinkers, the work examines some of the consequences of political, cultural and personal rupture, as well as the manifold ways in which various Jewish intellectuals sought to respond to these ruptures and carve out new options of thought and action.

Sammy Gronemann (1875–1952) is among the most famous German-language Zionist dramatists. His history extends from earliest foundation of the Zionist movement to its realization in the Jewish State, a process to which Gronemann contributed substantially. His complete dramas – excluding comedies – reflect this history and are analyzed in detail for the first time in this book.

Throughout his lifetime, the German-Jewish poet Ernst Lissauer (1882–1937) characterized himself as exclusively “German” and was attacked for this by anti-Semites and Zionists alike. The study examines his position between “Germanness” and “Jewishness” and the basic tenets of his works. The analysis is enhanced by the commented edition of his 1935–1937 correspondence with Walter A. Berendsohn.

This volume re-examines the overall picture of the Enlightenment offered by Horkheimer and Adorno, including their interpretations of Bacon, Spinoza, Kant, and de Sade. While scholars discussing the Dialectic of Enlightenment have generally concentrated on its fundamental critique of rationality, they have rarely asked whether the philosophers considered by the work are suitable vehicles for critiquing Enlightenment.

Kafka has been widely praised for his rendering of a universal human condition. Yet his work is also considered to have given voice to the singularity of experience. This paradox in the reception of Kafka engenders questions concerning the interplay between philosophy and literature, especially pertaining to the meaning of the universal and its transformation, which the contributions of this volume address from a variety of perspectives.

WESTERWEEL GROUP: NON-CONFORMIST RESISTANCE AGAINST NAZI-GERMANY

DECOLONIZING AUSCHWITZ?

JEWISH DOCTORS AND THE HOLOCAUST

[Decolonizing Auschwitz? Comparative Post-Colonial Approaches in Holocaust Research]

The Anatomy of Survival

A Joint Rescue Effort of Dutch Idealists and Dutch-German Zionists

The book tells the touching story of the Dutch resistance group led by left wing teacher Joop Westerweel who managed to save some 300 Jews from the Nazi persecution. The Jews, mostly young German and Austrian Palestine Pioneers, were hidden in the Netherlands, partly brought to France and over the Pyrenees to Spain. Joop Westerweel paid with his life for his activities. Other members of the group ended up in concentration camps. Hans Schippers, Netherlands Institute of War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (NIOD), Amsterdam, Netherlands.

CO-PUBLICATION WITH MAGNES PRESS

This is the extraordinary story of survival by Jewish doctors of Auschwitz. Despite impossible odds many doctors survived an average of twenty months. Most prisoners survived only fifteen weeks. How was survival possible? From survivor memoirs and archives the author presents a theory based on the interrelationship between four interlocking components; the will to live, the essentials of life, specific personal traits and defence mechanisms. In recent years, Holocaust research has been supplemented by new “comparative post-colonial” approaches, with scholars claiming that the histories of colonialism and National Socialism were closely linked, both historically and ideologically. In his study, Steffen Klävers analyzes the heuristic potential of selected examples of this perspective and critically examines its argumentation and methodology.

BESCHREIBUNGSVERSUCHE DER JUDENFEINDSCHAFT II [Attempts to Describe Anti-Semitism II: Anti-Semitism in Text and Image – Critique, Reflection, and Ambivalence] Antisemitismus in Text und Bild – zwischen Kritik, Reflexion und Ambivalenz

SARTRE, JEWS, AND THE OTHER Rethinking Antisemitism, Race, and Gender

The book is a compilation of texts by prestigious scholars from different disciplines in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. Its objective is to revisit Jean-Paul Sartre’s Réflexions sur la Question Juive seventy years after its publication locating it within the setting of two other pioneering – and we argue, related – publications, namely Simone De Beauvoir’s Le deuxième sexe of 1949 and Franz Fanon’s Peau noire et masques blancs of 1952. The focus of the volume is on artistic and media involvement with anti-Semitism before 1950 across different arts and languages. It recalls largely forgotten novels from the 1920s, such as Hugo Bettauer’s City without Jews, and the film “Gentleman’s Agreement.” It reinterprets classical writers, such as Gotthold E. Lessing, and analyzes their work using the contemporary transdisciplinary approach in anti-Semitism research.

SOCIAL MEMORY AMONG THE LITERATI OF YEHUD

Ehud Ben Zvi has been at the forefront of exploring how the study of social memory contributes to our understanding of the intellectual world of the literati of the early Second Temple period and their textual repertoire. Many of his studies on the matter and several new relevant works are here collected together providing a very useful resource for furthering research and teaching in this area. ARISTOBULOS IN ALEXANDRIA [Aristobulos in Alexandria: Jewish Exegesis between Greeks and Egyptians under Ptolemaios VI Philometor] Jüdische Bibelexegese zwischen Griechen und Ägyptern unter Ptolemaios VI. Philometor

Unter Ptolemaios VI. Philometor (180–145 v. Hellenismus; Antikes Judentum; Alexandria; Bibelexegese

During the reign of Ptolemaios VI Philometor (180–145 BCE), the Jewish author Aristobulos wrote an extensive text that he addressed to the ruler personally, which dealt with the correct interpretation of the Pentateuch. The few preserved fragments still offer multifaceted insights on the early phase of Jewish exegesis – 200 years before Philo, in the conflicted world of the Alexandrine Greeks and Egyptians. VOLUME III: LEVITICUS

The volume presents 20 articles of renowned European scholars on human leadership in the Hebrew Bible. Concepts like “priest”, “prophet”, “judge” and “king” are examined in a literary, historical, and theological perspective with special emphasis on conceptual changes and developments. It contributes to biblical theology as well as to the complex interplay between history of ancient Israel and literary history of the Hebrew Bible.

Studies in the Religion and Society of the Judaean Community at Elephantine NOW IN PAPERBACK

The book argues that the Aramaic documents from Elephantine dating to the Achaemenid period offer not only important glimpses of Judaean religion in the Persian period but that the religion of the Judaeans in Elephantine is among the best historically verifiable cases of Persian period Yahwism. The documents have the potential of functioning as an archive that can revise the canonised image of the Judaean religion in the Persian period. A critical edition of the Samaritan Pentateuch is one of the most urgent desiderata of Hebrew Bible research. The present volume on Leviticus is the first out of a series of five meant to fill this gap. The text from the oldest mss. of SP is continuously accompanied by comparative readings, gathered from the Samaritan Targum and the oral reading, as well as MT, the DSS, and the LXX, creating an indispensable resource for Biblical research.

The study spotlights the importance of ethical discourse on icons in the Book of Wisdom. Using structural, semantic, and topological analyses, it shows that parenesis about false and true images of God is an overarching theme, and contextualizes it in terms of tradition and cultural history. The text makes a unique contribution to the ancient debate on images by positing that they fulfill the imago dei invested in human beings. Wisdom; Imago Dei

THE RECEPTION OF THE BOOK OF ISAIAH IN DEUTEROCANONICAL AND COGNATE LITERATURE

This volume brings together a lively set of papers from the first session of the Deuterocanonical and Cognate Literature program unit of the Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting in 2016. Together with a few later contributions, these essays explore a number of thematic and textual issues as they trace the reception history of the Book of Isaiah in Deuterocanonical and cognate literature.

The discovery of Hebrew manuscripts of Ben Sira in the Cairo Genizah transformed the interpretation of the book. Since their discovery attention has been directed on the interpretation of the ancient book, but this volume gives serious consideration to the Hebrew manuscripts themselves. It examines the early discoveries, the codicology and reception of the manuscripts, and the light they throw on the Hebrew language and poetic techniques.

WISDOM, COSMOS, AND CULTUS IN THE BOOK OF SIRACH

The book of Sirach is a significant theological Jewish document from the 2nd century BCE. This volume examines the interrelationships among three prominent themes within the book: the orderliness of creation, people’s ability to attain wisdom, and the centrality of the cultus in Jewish life. HEBRÄISCHES UND ARAMÄISCHES WÖRTERBUCH ZU DEN TEXTEN VOM TOTEN MEER [Hebrew and Aramaic Dictionary of the Dead Sea Scrolls – Including the Manuscripts from the Cairo Geniza] Einschließlich der Manuskripte aus der Kairoer Geniza

Reinhard G. Kratz, Annette Steudel, Ingo Kottsieper (Hrsg./Eds.)

BAND 2: GIMMEL – ZAJIN

The manuscripts from Qumran and other sites offer unique insight into the Hebrew and Aramaic languages during the period of the Second Temple. For the first time, in the tradition of classical lexicology, this philological dictionary develops a non-Biblical lexicon from these sources (plus the Dead Sea scrolls and Cairo Geniza manuscripts), while also placing it in the context of the history of the Hebraic and Aramaic languages. THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS AND GERMAN SCHOLARSHIP Thoughts of an Englishman Abroad

This booklet considers both pre- and post-1989 German-speaking scholarship on the Dead Sea Scrolls. It shows that study of the Scrolls was part of the German tradition of the study of antiquity. It stresses German contributions to the provision of study resources, the techniques of manuscript reconstruction, the analysis of the scrolls in relation to the New Testament and Early Judaism, as well as the popularization of scholarship. JEWISH HISTORIOGRAPHY BETWEEN PAST AND FUTURE

Custom and Practice in Jewish Life

Ranging from Antiquity to the present, the volume highlights facets of the interplay between Jewish life and customs and examines their impact and implications on the individual and the community. Whereas law is a product of legislation of official bodies, customs evolve spontaneously and reflect deeper social and mythical roots. These ascending grass-roots tendencies are followed by the people and are subsequently accepted as binding. Judaism; Jewish history; Jewish law; customs

PORTRAYING THE LAND

DER HANDELNDE MENSCH

Hebrew Maps of the Land of Israel from Rashi to the Early 20th Century

[Humans in Action: Studies on the Relationship of Ethics and Anthropology in the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs]

CLOTHING SACRED SCRIPTURES

Jewish maps of the Holy Land have been drawn by Jewish scholars as part of biblical and rabbinical literature and within early modern Jewish scholarship, but their development has been neglected in scientific literature. This book fills the lacuna. It tracks two parallel courses of development: traditional depictions of the borders in simple sketches following Rahi‘s tradition, and artistic pictorial maps which followed European-Christian models.

Is the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs merely a set of ethical instructions, or are there overarching perspectives that unite them? What is the role of the unusual number of anthropological statements and how do they relate to the ethics of the text? This study carefully examines the testaments to show that here, ethics and anthropology are deliberately interconnected.

Book Art and Book Religion in Christian, Islamic and Jewish Cultures

This volume explores the aesthetic dimension of medieval book religions. Around the Mediterranean and in Europe, Christian, Islamic and Jewish communities shared a common interest in embellishing sacred texts: artistic devices such as calligraphy, illumination, diagrams and precious bindings were believed to transform sacred scripture into holy objects. The chapters of this book examine these phenomena from a transcultural perspective. Book religion; Ornament; Materiality; Book illumination

Early Commentaries on the Guide of the Perplexed

The Jewish Argument with Dogma and Doubt OPEN ACCESS

OPEN ACCESS

Commentaries on the Guide of the Perplexed occupy a central but neglected place in the history of Jewish thought. In the first study on the subject, Igor De Souza examines this dynamic tradition in its most creative period. Rather than mere interpretation, De Souza reads commentaries as texts in their own right. At the same time, he illustrates how texts are reimagined through commentary, and repurposed for new generations of readers. Maimonides; Commentary; Guide of the Perplexed; Middle Ages

Igor H. de Souza, Yale University, New Haven, U.S.A.

In philosophical works that circulated as clandestine manuscripts, the Amsterdam physician and polemicist Isaac Orobio de Castro (1617–1687) defended Judaism intermittently against Christianity and Spinoza’s critique of religion. His two-front battle recruited rationalism, scepticism, and rabbinic tradition in complex ways. Six historians have newly explored Orobio’s context, literary ethos, and reception at the 400th anniversary of his birth. Isaac Orobio; Sephardic Jewry; Jewish-Christian controversy

DIE BETREUUNG SCHWERKRANKER UND STERBENDER IN BAYERISCHEN JÜDISCHEN GEMEINDEN HEUTE

SAMARITAN LANGUAGES, TEXTS, AND TRADITIONS

THE BIBLE, QUMRAN, AND THE SAMARITANS

[Illness, age and dying in the migration society. The example of the Bavarian Jewish communities]

Since the 1990s, the numbers of Jewish communities in Bavaria have increased tenfold due to an influx of refugees. Many immigrants from the GUS states, however, brought physical and mental health problems with them and the mortality rate in these communities far exceeds their birth rate. The present study analyses this situation for the first time, focusing especially on how communities cope with these challenges.

The volume collects studies in the linguistic, exegetical and historical traditions found in Samaritan texts or pertaining to our understanding of the Samaritans, from antiquity to the present. Apart from the Hebrew Pentateuch, a special focus is laid on sources in Samaritan Arabic and Samaritan Aramaic. Samaritans; Hebrew; Aramaic; Arabic

Stefan Schorch, University Halle-Wittenberg, Halle, Germany.   Collection, English, 3rd quarter 2018

The book focuses on the change in Biblical Studies and Samaritan research created by new material emerging from the manuscripts from the Dead Sea and the ruins and inscriptions found on Mount Gerizim. The pre-Samaritan texts from Qumran and the results from the excavations on Mount Gerizim have created an area of study common to previously separated fields of research. Biblical scholars and experts on the Samaritans discuss this new situation. Bible; Qumran; Samaritans; Pentateuch

JALKUT SCHIMONI ZU SAMUEL [Yalkut Shimoni on the First Book of Samuel]

Übers. v./Transl. by Beat Zuber

Studies in Aggadah and Midrash in the Zohar

Transl. by Liat Keren NOW IN PAPERBACK

This monograph discusses the Zohar, the most important book of the Kabbalah, as a late strata of the Midrashic literature. The author concentrates on the ‚expanded‘ biblical stories in the Zohar and on its relationship to the ancient Talmudic Aggadah. The analytical and critical examination of these biblical themes reveals aspects of continuity and change in the history of the old Aggadic story and its way into the Zoharic corpus. Kabbalah; Midrash; Aggadah; Medieval Jewry

The Yalkut Shimoni compiles rabbinical interpretations of the entire Hebrew bible. We do not know the criteria for selecting the interpretations, nor whether the book was conceived as a comprehensive exegetical reference work to be linked to biblical interpretations in the Talmud and Midrash or for reforming the rabbinical interpretive tradition. The translation of this work is a first step toward answering these questions.

A Narratological Reading

As rabbinic literature in general Seder Eliyahu, a so called ethical midrash probably composed in the ninth century, makes rich use of narrative, to interpret but also to edify. This book provides a classification of the work’s narrative material. It examines, among the most significant aspects of the work’s narratology, the ways in which narrative (e. g. parables, first person narratives and women stories) interacts with non-narrative discourse. This book analyzes and describes the development and aspects of imagery techniques, a primary mode of mystical experience, in Jewish mysticism. Imagery techniques of twentieth century Jewish mysticism, in contrast to linguistic imagery techniques in medieval Kabbalah, are comparable to screenplays or feature films. This development can be fruitfully contextualized within broader trends of western and eastern imagery techniques. SHARING AND HIDING RELIGIOUS KNOWLEDGE IN EARLY JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY, AND ISLAM

Understanding Scripture in Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the Pre-Modern Orient NOW IN PAPERBACK

The art of interpreting Holy Scriptures flourished throughout the culturally heterogeneous pre-modern Orient among Jews, Christians and Muslims. How were the interactions and how productive were they for the further development of these traditions? Have there been blurred spaces of scholarly activity that transcended sectarian borders? What was the role played by mutual influences in profiling the own tradition against the others?

Holy Scriptures; Judaism; Christianity; Islam

How did ancient communities approach the concept of religious knowledge? Was it something to be shared with all, or was it the provenance of certain initiates? This volume of collected essays illustrates a range of approaches to this dilemma, from ancient Babylon, Judaism (Dead Sea scrolls, Book of Jubilees, rabbinic traditions in the Roman Empire), Christianity (Gnosticism, Alexandria, Gospel of John) and Islam (Qur‘ān and Ismaili traditions).

THE CONCEPT OF REVELATION IN JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM

The idea that God reveals himself to human beings is central in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, but differs in regard of content and conceptualization. The first volume of the new series Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses points out similarities and differences of “revelation”. KCID aims to establish an archeology of religious knowledge in order to create a new conceptual platform of mutual understanding among religious communities. THE CONCEPT OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM

The second volume of the new series Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses points out the roots of the concept of “human rights” in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It shows how far the universal validity of “human rights” opposes in some crucial points with religious traditions. The aim of KCID is to establish an archeology of religious knowledge to create a new conceptual platform of mutual understanding among religious communities.

[German-Jewish Sources from Palestine/ Israel: Bibliography and Selected Works (1890–2000)] Bibliographie und ausgewählte Originalwerke (1890–2000)

Palestine, and later Israel, has been of foremost importance for German-Jewish immigration. Famous texts by major writers, including Else Lasker-Schüler, Sammy Groneman and Shalom Ben-Chorin, were published in Palestine, not in Germany. The electronic resource contains writings of all genres which can be searched by category (e. g. history). The bibliography records approximately 1,500 entries, of which approx. 250 are linked to their full texts.

NEW IN ENGLISH THE PERSECUTION AND MURDER OF THE EUROPEAN JEWS BY NAZI GERMANY, 1933–1945 Edited by the German Federal Archives, the Institute of Contemporary History Munich – Berlin, and the Chair of Modern History at the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg In collaboration with Yad Vashem This source edition on the persecution and murder of the European Jews by Nazi Germany presents in a total of 16 volumes a thematically comprehensive selection of documents on the Holocaust. The work illustrates the contemporary contexts, dynamics, and intermediate stages of the political and social process that led to this unprecedented mass crime. It can be used as an academic aid or be read as a written monument to the murdered Jews of Europe: by teachers, researchers, students, and all those who are interested in addressing the Holocaust. The edition comprises authentic testimony by persecutors, victims, and onlookers. These testimonies are furnished with academic annotations and the vast majority of them are published here for the first time in English. „

All documents translated from their respective original languages.

Updated and adapted for an English-language readership.

Reviews

These two solid and impressive volumes propose much more: they voice the debates that this complex, fascinating and important experience has provoked. The reader gets access to these debates, at the best level, and his or her own level of comprehension benefits from these texts that confront the challenges and trials faced by Israel.” Prof. Michel Wieviorka, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris
