a hero or a villain? be you

What is the DEEPINGS RAFT RACE? Just in case you are one of the few people who have never been to the event or if you want to know a li le more………. It originated over 50 years ago as a bet in a pub! Since then it has had its ups and downs but for the past few years has been growing in scope and a endance. The current commi ee of volunteers designate its primary purpose as a “Community Event” – basically a great day out for ra ers and spectators alike. However, there is a very important secondary func on and that is to raise money for good causes. Last year we raised over £8000, the majority of which was split between the Evergreen Care Trust and the Deepings Youth Group plus some small dona ons to other local organisa ons. In addi on to that, individual chari es and community groups raise money and awareness on their stalls and many ra teams raise funds for their own good causes. Whilst there is a funfair and a huge variety of stalls stretching from Bridge Street Deepings St James through to the Town Centre in Market Deeping, the main a rac on is around 40 ra s decorated to match the theme racing up the river with many of the crew in fancy dress and much water being splashed and sprayed around between the teams and spectators. So, if you have never been, put the date in your diary now, if you are a regular we would love to see you again this year and unless you are reading this on 5th August it is not too late to enter a ra !

This Year’s Chosen Chari es A er much delibera on, it was decided that, Age Concern Deepings 2nd Minibus Appeal will be the primary beneficiary with an equally shared secondary fund going to The Deeping Scouts and The Deepings Swimming Club. A dona on will also be made to the following: The Carers Si er Service: Friends of Jubilee Park : Faith's Journey. Sue Ryder and St Georges Hydrotherapy Pool have been offered a share of our street collec ons in return for their assistance with our charity buckets. Age Concern Deepings was formed to support the elderly of the Deepings and surrounding villages. Day Care on Fridays takes up to 12 quite infirm people who are entertained, thus giving their carers a days respite. Lunch club on Thursday takes 35 pensioners for a home cooked 2 course meal and they are transported door to door by our 2 mini buses. Our befriending club visits over 50 clients in their own homes each week for a chat and cuppa. Every week our volunteers and buses take people shopping to a variety of places and weather permi ng, on ou ngs to places of interest. Thanks to the people and businesses of The Deepings we have recently purchased a new minibus and we are slowly working towards replacing our other older minibus. Come and talk to us and see our new Minibus near the Informa on Stall on Ra Race day. Contact Chris Knight 01778 345558 if you would like further informa on. The Deepings Scout Group offers challenge and adventure to over 200 young people. We believe in helping our Members fulfil their poten al by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves. We give people of every background the chance to stretch themselves, learn new skills and make lifelong friends. All this is made possible by the efforts of our voluntary adult leaders. With award winning training and one-to- one support, we make sure that each one of our volunteers gets to make best use of their skills and talents. We are looking to recruit more leaders to help open new sec ons to meet increasing demand. A few hours of your me can make years of difference. If you are interested in helping us please contact Graham at or on 01778 314089 Deepings Swimming club is a small, friendly club that competes, and o en wins, against much larger clubs, thanks to the professionalism and dedica on of both the swimmers and coaches. We have members of all ages who compete in the sport or just simply swim for fun. In order for the club to con nue to grow and compete we need new members, so why not join us? To arrange a FREE trial call Martyn Reynolds on 01778 344653 or to request a trial now go to 'About us' on our website and click on 'join our club' and fill in the form. Deepings Ra Race aim to support different causes each year, preferably with a local connec on. Watch out around November me for details of how your charity or community group can apply to be a beneficiary in 2019.

BUCKET COLLECTORS: As you know we do not levy any charges for spectator entry to the event and we s ll manage to raise £000’s for local chari es. Our bucket collectors this year are from Sue Ryder (Thorpe Hall Hospice) and St George’s Hydrotherapy Pool. Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice supports people aged 18 or over dying from life limi ng condi ons like cancer, heart failure and lung disease either in the Hospice or in their own homes. It is the only specialist pallia ve care inpa ent unit in Peterborough. We are also the only unit with a mul -disciplinary team which includes doctors, nurses, occupa onal therapy, physiotherapy, complementary therapy, bereavement counsellors, and psychological and spiritual support. This means we can care for the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of our pa ents, whether they come to us for symptom management as part of their pallia ve care or for end of life care. That care can be given in our 20-bed hospice or in the community thanks to Thorpe Hall Hospice at Home team – and also extends to the loved ones of our pa ents too. Thorpe Hall also runs specialist day services open to people living with long-term condi ons. They can join in ac vi es and ou ngs helping to boost confidence, aid rehabilita on and offer social opportuni es. St George’s Hydrotherapy Pool exists for people aged 6 months to 94 years, 461 users coming from the Deepings and having life limi ng condi ons such as MS, Parkinson’s, Motor Neurone Disease, Au sm and many other issues. St George’s is a fully accessible community hydrotherapy pool with a spa facility. The warm suppor ve waters of the pool can benefit children and adults with a wide range of disabili es or long-term health condi ons. It can also assist rehabilita on from surgery or an injury. Addi onally it offers valuable relaxa on and leisure me for those with learning and physical disabili es. Our friendly community pool is open to and welcomes anyone in Peterborough and the surrounding area, including family members and carers. Since opening in March 2011, St George's has helped over 3500 local people by providing pain relief, health improvements and freedom from isola on. Telephone 01733 453583 Please give generously as these chari es will receive proceeds from the collec on. If everyone a ending the Ra Race gave £1 that would make an enormous difference to so many people’s lives. Please speak to the Bucket Collectors if you would like further informa on. We are happy to continue our support of the Deepings Raft Race and to help raise funds for Age Concern, The Scouts and Deeping Swimming Club When it comes to all matters legal, we have all felt un-nerved by the unknown and want to not only have guidance, but need to feel complete trust and confidence. D&M family solicitors will give you this, as actually speaking to them takes away any worry or concerns you may have. Knowing that every matter is dealt with in total confidence and care, with attention to detail and empathy means that you really are in their safe hands. OUR STALLHOLDERS Every year we try and provide a variety of stalls that both entertain and are fulfilling to your needs. Last year there were a total of 47 different stalls and we are hoping for similar this year. We have many return visits, especially our famous ‘Bus Bar’ and the ladies with ‘Totally Sweet Retro Candy’, who incidentally are part of the Paulos Circus Family which s ll travels the Country today. Mum Natalie was a trapeze ar st and youngest daughter Shannon has the amazing skill of juggling using only her feet! Eldest Daughter Natasha was a ‘Hula Hoop’ ar ste in a double act with Shannon and she is also the driver for the business, a tradi onal family concern. Pop along and see them for some real old fashioned delights. New to us this year is Emma with her ‘Cake Kebab’. Emma lives locally and has an innova ve and unique way of presen ng her cakes in many different styles and flavours. Also making a return visit is Elizabeth with her ‘Dapper Doorstops’, hand-made cra ed animals that will not look out of place in any environment. Great Christmas presents but get there early as she is usually nearly sold out. Thank you to all our traders, you make the event so worthwhile. If you would like to be featured in next year’s brochure then drop us a line at tradestands@deepingsra

TOP BUILDING TIPS: Try to make your ra reasonably light so it can be easily moved when on land, but remember if it is too light it may be unstable in the water. Long narrow ra s go faster but may roll and are harder to steer and transport. Wider spacing on twin hull ra s can make then faster and more stable but may make them more difficult to steer and transport. The lower the centre of gravity, the more stable the ra , but the less amount of hull in the water, the faster it will go due to less drag. However, capsizing loses me so err on the side of stability. Large barrels can make the ra have a high centre of gravity and metal ones make it very heavy. Small (i.e. 25 Litre) plas c barrels are great if you can get them. If you use some form of insula on material for buoyancy, please try and make sure pieces don’t break off and pollute the river. Ra s upside down and crew falling into the river is usually great for keeping the crowds amused but it won’t help you win a race and can cause delays to our schedule. More ps on our website.

Theme: It’s not mandatory but it’s great fun to build or decorate your ra to reflect the theme and there is an addi onal prize for best dressed ra ! Our 2018 theme of HEROES & VILLAINS should give you lots of scope. More advice and video links about ra building plus entry forms on our website. As well as designing ra s to match the theme, many crew and spectators also don fancy dress which really adds to the fun. Again we will be awarding a prize for the best fancy dress ou it! TOP TIPS Size your ra to suit. For a team of 2 keep it small, if there are 8 crew you will need a big ra . Try and keep it light enough for your crew to easily carry it, but keep the weight low down (most weight is usually the crew). Do a test run if you can. Drop off your ra at the Waterton Arms Saturday so it is ready to go Sunday.

HASSLE FREE SPECTATING Coming to watch the event? We certainly hope you will be joining us for what is probably Deepings biggest event of the year but here are a few ps to help. Parking can be tricky with so many wan ng to a end and because we have to close some roads. If you want to come by bus, the Delaine 101 should be running it’s normal Sunday service and that will get you close to the Market Deeping end of the ac on. If you arrive early, it’s worth walking down towards the start area and then following the ra s back to Market Deeping town centre later on. Tel 01778 422866 If you live locally, walking is the best bet. If you do need to come by car, Deeping is sadly lacking in large public carparks, both the Leisure centre and Deepings precinct are primarily for customers of those venues, however, on street parking (if you can find a space) is free. Please park considerately, not blocking driveways. It is probably easier to park a li le way out from the event and walk the last bit. At me of going to press we are working on plans for a car park on Su on’s Lane which will be helpul if you are coming from the south. Please look out for signs. WHAT AND WHAT NOT TO BRING We have plenty of stalls where you will be able to buy food and drink and some of those traders such as the Bus Bar, give a propor on of their takings to our charity fund in addi on to paying their pitch fee. Also, check through the brochure to see which local businesses are suppor ng the event and show your apprecia on by using their services. Without their support this event would not be able to take place. A blanket may be useful if you want to sit on the river bank and don’t forget the suncream! PLEASE DON’T BRING EGGS TO THROW OR NON BIO-DEGRADEABLE WATER BOMBS AS THESE CAN POLLUTE THE RIVER & HARM WILDLIFE. SUNBRELLAS? Please, Please, Please s ll come along if it’s raining, a huge amount of work goes into organising the event and local chari es will benefit hugely. It’s all about ge ng wet anyway so pack your mac and a brolly - hopefully you will be able to sit on the mac and use the brolly as a sunshade!

THE DEEPING COMMUNITY CENTRE presents a fun family friendly area on Ra Race day which is planned to include: A bouncy castle, bumper cars, messy play for children and an area for hot drinks, cold drinks and ice creams for all. For those interested in animals we intend to have the following; • The exo c pet refuge, a small charity that provides a permanent home to a large variety of unwanted and neglected exo c animals • Peterborough and District Herpetological Exo cs Society, a society who share and give advice, to keepers of exo c animals. • Petstop (Market Deeping), a pet shop in Market Deeping with an extensive range of products to cater for all domes c animals. Petstop are running a compe on for the best pet picture and will award prizes for the best on ra race day, in addi on to hos ng a number of games for dogs. We also have a brightly coloured tractor donated by local farmer in support of Sue Ryder, one of this year’s Deepings Ra Race 2018 supported chari es. The Deepings Community Centre opened in October 2000 a er 3 years of work by a group of local people. SKDC’s acquisi on of the Old Health Centre provided the base. The Centre, now well established, is a Company Limited by Guarantee and registered Charity, all run almost en rely by volunteers including the Board of Directors. We provide 5 ‘In House’ Clinics and wide variety of regular ac vi es – Health, sports, cra , IT and other Learning for Fun Groups, plus Local Community Services and Counselling, all available with disabled access from our well lit carpark. If you would like to be a volunteer please contact us on 01778 381770 or visit the centre

At the time this brochure goes to press there are still a few matters to resolve with regard to a car park on Suttons Lane.
