» A Look Inside the Recently Completed Riverview School Student Center November 29, 2010 (Beverly, MA) - The Riverview School, located in East Sandwich, Massachusetts, recently celebrated a dedication ceremony of the newly constructed James Center, a 20,000 square foot building that features a theatre, café, gallery, school store, media center, library, Admissions and Operations offices and several new classrooms for the arts. Planning for the school’s new student center began nearly a decade ago, but really gained momentum three years ago when Siemasko + Verbridge came on board to provide architectural, interior and landscape design services . With ACELLA Construction, based in Norwell, MA, as the general contractor, construction broke ground in June 2009. The project was near completion by late August 2010, in time for students and faculty to move in by opening day of the school year.

One of the prime objective’s of the school is to prepare disabled students for productive lives beyond school. The new James Center gives students the opportunity to learn retail in the school store, learn how to operate lighting and sound equipment in the theatre and learn how to make and serve food and beverages in the café. The majority of the students live at the school to learn as much outside of the classroom as they do inside – such as problem solving and self reliance. The new James Center’s design has many curved lines, large windows that let in an abundance of natural light and modern fixtures that give a crisp, polished look. The new theatre, which seats 350, keeps the ocean and Cape feeling; it’s bright and even opens up to an outdoor amphitheater. The gallery just outside the theatre displays work created by other artists with disabilities around the nation, and there is a separate gallery area showcasing student’s artistic work. The School has applied for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for the building. Solar panels and recycled materials are just a few of the green elements of this design. Inspired by the over-riding goal that each student be able to reach their full potential in a safe environment, Siemasko + Verbridge’s design invites a sense of community into the life of the school and creates a welcoming presence for both students and prospective families.

» Acella Construction breaks ground on new Community Nursery School in Lexington October 12, 2010 - Acella Construction announced today that it has begun construction of the new Community Nursery School (CNS) in Lexington MA. The new building, which will be located on the same site at 2325 Massachusetts Ave., will include an updated floor plan with classrooms off a central hallway. The plan also calls for additional meeting space, a library, an art studio, and music space. The new school is scheduled to open its doors next fall. While construction is ongoing on Massachusetts Avenue, the school and students have been relocated to temporary space in Trinity Covenant Church on Clematis Road. “We’re excited to break ground on this project,” said David Dirubbo, President of Acella Construction. “When completed, this new school will give the CNS family a great new home to continue their important mission of fostering social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth.” CNS began with a small group of families in 1943, with a goal to provide a quality nursery school experience for children in the years between infancy and public school. In 1947, CNS moved into a building on its own 2 acres of land in Lexington and was incorporated as a nonprofit cooperative institution. The project is being designed by LDa Architecture & Interiors of Cambridge MA. To find out more about Community Nursery School, please visit their website, www.cnslex.org
