elcome to the Autumn/Winter season at Déda with another fantastic programme of performances, classes and visual art. All eyes will be on the UK next year with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As part of the countdown, Déda has been working with a stellar team of artists on Games Time, funded by Legacy Trust UK. For more information, and for details of when we’ll be presenting this spectacular outdoor performance in Derby, visit www.gamestime.org.uk We’re proud to once again be involved with the Derby Festé – now in its fifth year! Within the usual packed programme we’re especially pleased to welcome back Spanish street arts company Sarruga. They previously brought Dragons and Insects to the streets of Derby, and this year they will transform the city into an underwater wonderland, populated by giant illuminated fish and creatures from the deep. Another welcome return comes from Derby’s own Maison Foo. They were Resident Artists on the Déda|Artist scheme when they created Memoirs of a Biscuit Tin, which went on to be the smash hit of the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, so it will be a treat to see this poignant topsyturvy tale for adults back in Derby as part of a national tour.

Dance performance highlights this season include Stephanie Schober with her striking new music and dance piece Traffic and the return of the energetic and ever-popular Tavaziva Dance Company. And in the run-up to Christmas, we have two fantastic shows for families, with 3D Derby Deaf Drama’s A Christmas Carol and John Hegley’s Animal Alphaboat. As usual we have been busy lining up an array of class and workshop activities for you and your family to participate in. We have made a few changes to our class programme, introducing Streetdance, Breakbeatz and Ballet for younger children on Saturdays. We’re also introducing a new urban dance performance company called Reactor, for that Got To Dance experience. For adults we’ve divided up our programme into four easy to follow categories: Styles and Techniques, Health and Well-Being, Social Dancing and Urban. For all the information about Déda’s performances, classes and participation activities, visit our website at www.deda.uk.com. We hope to see you at Déda again very soon. 3

FRIDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 8 PM

Ladies Night: A Celebration of Derby’s finest female voices

Jazz at CUBE Tony Woods Avalon Trio

©The Power of Forever Photography

FRIDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 8 PM

Presented by SoulDeep Sessions An evening of R&B classics, contemporary soul, song-book standards, easy listening, spoken word and beautiful poetry. Local singer Monika Wieczorkowska will kick off the evening with songs from her upcoming solo album, while Buckso Dhillon will be performing classics from the likes of Frank Sinatra and Etta James. Talented singer and Derby music scene veteran Gloria Jones takes to the stage, followed by writer and performance poet Jo ‘Spice’ Blackwood. The evening closes with the uniquely talented Tanisha Vincent, a 21year-old contemporary soul and R&B vocalist.

This improvising trio was formed to celebrate the music of English classical composers of the twentieth century. The Tony Woods Avalon Trio’s material includes music by Delius, Finzi, Walton, and Vaughan Williams, alongside original works. The trio explores the harmonic connections between contemporary jazz and the music of the great English masters. The melodies from these instrumental works lend themselves particularly well to improvisation, just as the ‘standards’ of the American song book have been used by jazz musicians since the 1930s.

FRIDAY 7 OCTOBER 8 PM

Double Take

Jazz at CUBE: Sarah Gillespie Quartet

Photo: Irven Lewis

FRIDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 8 PM

Presented by Tavaziva Dance There are two sides to every story. Through adversity, comes triumph. Through pain, comes love. After the storm, comes calm. Double Take is an intensely courageous double bill surveying the impact of black dance, and Bawren Tavaziva's contribution to the contemporary dance landscape in Britain. An influential choreographer and musician, Bawren will unravel an inspirational soundtrack featuring the sweet sounds of African vocalist Tsungai Tsikirai. Immerse yourself in this celebration of culture, hardship, agony and joy, performed by the UK’s most fantastically exuberant dancers.

Playing to packed out venues across the country, Sarah Gillespie continues to thrill jazz audiences wherever she goes. Her latest album In the Current Climate is, if possible, even more exciting than her first. Returning to the CUBE following last year’s sell-out show, the band – consisting of Sarah on vocals and guitar, Gilad Atzmon on reeds and accordion, Ben Bastin on bass and Enzo Zirilli on drums – make this an evening not to be missed.

Six quicksilver performers in a three-dimensional dance experience, with futuristic film projections, dramatic lighting and fast-paced streams of movement. Artistic Director Gail Parmel and Japanese choreographer Akiko Kitamura will explore how we use machines as an extension of our bodies, how natural and artificial merge together to create new life, and how the glitches in our wiring make us human. With an African and Japanese flavour featuring martial arts, taut control and angular movements, the dancers will wow you with their tricks. Raw, vibrant and full of expression, the work will also touch you on an emotional level.

Presented by Maison Foo

FRIDAY 21 OCTOBER 8 PM SATURDAY 22 OCTOBER 8 PM

All is not well at Number 92. Mrs Benjamin has disappeared, leaving her decaying house to fend for itself. In an act of desperation, the house sets off on a strange and enchanting journey through the memories that lie within, determined to find its missing owner. With an inventive blend of clowning, visual theatre and puppetry, Maison Foo bring to life an imaginative topsy turvy tale for grownups. Suitable for ages 12+. Memoirs of a Biscuit Tin was a sell-out success at the Edinburgh Festival 2010 and was created at Déda while Maison Foo were Resident Artists on the Déda|Artists scheme. Produced by Spiel. Once upon a time… there were two… and they found something quite extraordinary. It stretches, it’s shiny, it slides, it pings and it… shall we find out what it can do? FRIDAY 11 NOVEMBER 8 PM

Trinity Presents: Back for the Future

Traffic

Presented by The Trinity Band

Traffic is an interdisciplinary performance piece, featuring accordionist Camilla Barratt-Due and dancers Keir Patrick and Lise Manavit. The collaboration is inspired by the piano piece Abundant Numbers by Tom Johnson, a composer who is renowned for his minimalist music based on mathematical themes. The composition provides a choreographic framework, in which the two dancers and musician freely create their own sound and movement with three accordions, chairs and a sheet of glass whilst spontaneously interacting with each other. Expect to be surprised by a playful and sophisticated performance that explores new audio-visual connections and captures the individuality of each performer.

Derby’s very own Trinity Band (aka TTB) returns to Déda fresh from Sky One’s Must Be The Music and appearing in the Live and Unsigned National Final at the O2. For these special one-off evenings of live music, dance, poetry and comedy, they will be joined by a whole host of special guests including Alex Blood and The Diggers, Seeing Sounds, plus more to be announced. With a ‘Trinatronic’ vibe, are you ready for the future? Advance booking essential.

SATURDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2.30 & 4.30 PM

The Snow Dragon Presented by Tall Stories Following the success of Twinkle Twonkle last year, Tall Stories returns to Déda with the story of Billy the Goat and the mysterious Snow Dragon. Billy has everything a young goat could need – and more besides. When New Year’s Eve approaches, Billy’s parents tell him to pick berries to leave out for the Snow Dragon – so that it will bring him lots of fantastic presents. But looking for berries is hard work and Billy finds it much easier to ‘borrow’ from his friends. As a result, New Year doesn’t turn out quite how he expected… Storytelling, theatre and songs create a magical, comical world for everyone aged 4+.

Jazz at CUBE: Tommaso Starace Quartet Ever since alto saxophonist Tommaso Starace played a sell out performance for us a few years ago with music inspired by the black and white photographs of Elliott Erwitt, we’ve been looking for an opportunity to bring him back to Derby. His new quartet gave us the perfect excuse. With Frank Harrison on piano, Laurence Cottle on bass and Chris Nickolls on drums, this exciting band will play music from Tommaso’s new CD Blood and Champagne, with material by Tommaso with compositions by Ennio Morricone, Michel Petrucciani and Billy Strayhorn.

Always a huge hit at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, John’s unique approach to poetry, dance and song will leave children and adults enchanted. Full of poetic genius and silliness, John will guide you on a hilarious trip through the alphabet visiting a menagerie of creatures on the way. With dance, song and hilarious poems, Animal Alphaboat is the perfect Christmas treat for adults and grown-ups alike.

Back for a fifth year, following last year’s successful production of Snow White, 3D Derby Deaf Drama returns with another magical Christmas show for families. Join the company as they journey through the life of cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge who has no time for Christmas merriment and cheer. As the clock strikes midnight on Christmas Eve, his world is turned upsidedown as he visits Christmases past, present and future. VISUAL ARTS

1 SEPTEMBER – 29 OCTOBER

Kate Smith

Artcore

Gallery Déda

CUBE café|bar

Kate’s current body of work began in 2002 and deals with the marks and residues we leave behind as we move through spaces, and investigates drawing as an expression of gesture, mark, imprint and trace. The work reveals an individual moving through space and explores the differences between marks consciously made, and those which imply the presence of another. The exhibition concentrates on ‘reveal’ drawings, marks of movement created by wax applied to hands and feet, exposed with pencil. Alongside, are large drawings of unconscious scribbles and scrawls painstakingly recreated with pencil and ballpoint pen.

Card Deals – 1 to 28 September Games People Play – 3 to 29 October Artcore present two exhibitions throughout the Autumn season at Déda. Card Deals is a colourful display of 52 postcards made by artists from both the East Midlands and India. Part of the larger exhibition Games People Play, the project examines the broad idea of sports and games, looking at a deeper level at the ways people handle relationships. Games People Play is an innovative project involving exhibitions by English and Indian artists, examining the commonalities between games and the way we conduct our lives – negotiating, competing, preparing and practicing, even cheating, winning, losing.

CUBE café|bar

Inspired by science, Barbara is fascinated by how chance and uncertainty can lead her to find new images. She starts by making spontaneous arbitrary marks using a process of dripping, throwing and pouring the paint as well as tilting and shaking the canvas. Using her intuition to add to or dilute the medium, startling images emerge. This experimental way of working produces a combination of simply deceptive images and complex original forms.

Alysn works primarily in copper, bronze, stainless steel and pewter metals with woven metal fabrics. She alters the original surface by burnishing, texturing, printing, patterning and patinating and by using textile and embroidery techniques. The works are composed of evocative patterns, forms and figures articulated with complex, undulating, knotted and interwoven designs and text. Patterns emerge slowly as the work is viewed resulting in warm harmonies through subtly gentle, yet obsessive mazes. The finished works are at once personal, disconcerting and fascinating.

Our Dance Development and Performance programmes reach tens of thousands of people across the region. We're only able to do this through the support of people who believe in what we do.
