elcome to our Summer Season which sees the presentation of a fantastic programme for the indoors and the outdoors. Our CQ Circus returns in May and runs through to September with an array of street artists including Chango Fuego and The Tom Show, the perfect run up to Derby Festé 2017 on 29 and 30 September 2017. Company Chameleon make a welcome return exploring the sensitivities around mental health and how it affects those around us. This work fits perfectly with our wider Arts and Health programme and demonstrates our commitment to both physical and mental health wellbeing. We are currently undergoing a review of all our Adult Classes to ensure that they are meeting our customers’ needs so please look out for our Customer Survey that will be coming your way very soon. Your opinion matters to us and will help shape the future of the programme. Our strong partnership with Derby Theatre continues with the presentation of two amazing shows. COAL by award-winning Gary

Clarke shines a humorous but tragic light on the 1984–85 Miners Strike and Super Sunday by crazy circus group from Finland, Racehorse Company – defying the laws of gravity in hilarious and jaw-dropping fashion. Derby Book Festival has become a regular highlight of the City’s cultural calendar and this year Déda is proud to be presenting a varied programme that includes seasoned poet and comedian John Hegley as well as debut author and musician Min Kym. Two excellent visual artists with contrasting styles will be featured at Déda over the summer months with the intricate paintings of Andrew Macara in the CUBE and Upstairs Gallery, and the colourful illustrations of Kate Smith in the CUBE Annexe Gallery. Come along! Whatever brings you to Déda, I hope your time here is enjoyable and you leave having experienced something that inspires you.

Presented by Gary Clarke Company

An evening of assessment work created for and by the students studying on the BA (Hons) Dance degree run here at Déda in collaboration with the University of Derby. The evening will consist of work that has been choreographed by the students and pieces that have been created for them by professional artists. Two new pieces created by Adam Deusien and Humanhood will be premiered along with a reinterpretation of a classic contemporary piece Beach Birds (Cunningham) re-worked by Alice Marshall. For more information on this degree please visit derby.ac.uk/courses/dance-ba-hons or contact Alice Marshall (Programme Leader) on A.E.A.Marshall@derby.ac.uk

Created to mark the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/85 British Miners’ strike, award-winning choreographer Gary Clarke proudly presents COAL, a powerful and emotional dance theatre show about life at the coal face. It brings together Clarke’s striking physical language performed by seven professional dancers, a local cast of women and a live brass band, in a story about community, solidarity and survival. ‘An absorbing, immediate slice of history rendered with the kind of emotional truth that deepens its impact as popular entertainment.’ **** The Times Winner of UK Theatre and Critics’ Circle Dance Awards Age guidance 12+

DANCE | CIRCUS

Race Horse Company Presented by Derby Theatre and Déda, in association with Crying Out Loud on behalf of Circus Evolution Super Sunday is the newest super-fun show from Race Horse Company, the acclaimed allmale Finnish circus troupe with a reputation for madcap brilliance. Big on flying, big on skill and big on stomachchurning thrills it is delivered with laidback humour on a stage dressed as a derelict funfair. Against an atmospheric soundtrack, tension builds as the six performers casually propel themselves higher and higher on trampolines, teeterboards and with catapults. Funny, brave and irreverent. Age guidance: 12+

Presented by Shifting Sands Giving a modern comedic twist to Shakespeare’s popular tragedy, acclaimed clown theatre company Shifting Sands sets the action in a pub in the here and now, with the pub landlord as King. When he announces his retirement and the division of his ‘kingdom’ between his daughters, Mr Lear imitates his famous namesake and demands to know which of them loves him the most. In so doing he unleashes a tide of pent-up frustration and jealousy. A compellingly inventive retelling mixing slapstick, physical theatre, clowning and vibrant storytelling, this is a marvellously fun night. Age guidance 12+

Presented by Scarlett Daggers and Déda

Presented by Scarlett Daggers and Déda

Produced by and starring Rock ’n’ Roll redhead Scarlett Daggers and hosted by lyrical lothario Stage Door Johnny, LaDéDa is a lavish evening to leave you hot under the collar. Derby’s cheekiest night out returns with the skilful, sexy and very, very silly Abigail Collins. This pint-sized comedy powerhouse revisits the Déda stage with her multi-talented mix of comedy and circus. Also performing is feisty Lady Wildflower with her eclectic arsenal of extravagant acts to surprise and delight. Not for the faint of heart, Amazonian Goddess Hells Belle shakes up a cocktail of fiery arrogance, wit, intelligence, and style. Advanced booking is advised.

Award-winning Burlesque artist Didi Derrière has done nothing less than impress since she exploded onto the scene and we are pleased to welcome her to the LaDéDa line up. This blue-eyed blonde bombshell is a professionally trained dancer who’s sure to tantalize and tease any audience she encounters. If you go down to the woods tonight, you might just find Dave the Bear! London’s best male burlesque performer, singer, compère is an award-winning addition to our naughtybut-nice night out. Enjoy style on tap with Josephine Shaker, a scintillating syncopator of hot beats and utter dance-floor delight. Advanced booking is advised.

Min Kym: Gone: a Girl, a Violin, a Life Unstrung

Matt Sewell: A Charm of Goldfinches and other Collective Nouns

Photo: Orli Rose

FRIDAY 9 JUNE 5.30PM

Min Kym was a child prodigy, studying at the Purcell School of Music then going onto international competitive success and making debut recordings. She worked with many violins and, at 21, found ‘the one’: a rare 1696 Stradivarius, perfectly suited to her build and temperament. She recorded the Brahms concerto and a world tour was planned. Then, in a London café, her violin was stolen. Using episodes from her book Gone, Min Kym will combine readings with playing to illustrate the key stages of her journey; one which is told as much in the language of music as it is in words. Part of Derby Book Festival

TICKETS: £8 (£6)

Is that a bellowing of bullfinches or a mural of snow buntings? Come and learn the best and weirdest collective nouns for our feathered friends with best-selling author Matt Sewell. Matt will be talking about his lifelong interest in birds, his hugely successful career in writing and illustrating, and his latest book A Charm of Goldfinches and other Collective Nouns. Matt has been described as the Banksy of the bird world and has illustrated for the Guardian and Barbour; painted underpasses for the RSPB; and exhibited in London, Manchester, New York, Tokyo and Paris. Holly Farrell: Gardening for Mindfulness

An Evening with John Hegley

Photo: Jackie de Stefano

WEDNESDAY 14 JUNE 11.00AM

Gardening, like mindfulness, is a way of finding a sense of calm in an otherwise chaotic world, a simpler existence, even if it is only for a few minutes. Both forge a connection to the world around us, to nature and wildlife, which can bring pleasure and peace. Horticulturalist and mindfulness practitioner Holly Farrell’s beautifully illustrated guide provides a blueprint for a more contemplative way to garden, including projects, meditations and inspiration. Part of Derby Book Festival

Déda Academy Show

Presented by Blunderbus Theatre Company

Presented by Déda

Biff is not like other dogs. He doesn’t do dog stuff like weeing on lampposts, or scratching his fleas, or drinking out of the toilet. No, Biff likes moonlight and music and walking on his tiptoes. You see, Biff doesn’t think he’s a dog. He thinks he’s a ballerina! Based on the bestselling children’s book by Anna Kemp and Sara Ogilvie, this fabulous feel-good show for ages 3+ features music, songs, hand-crafted puppets and Biff, the ballet-dancing dog! Part of Derby Book Festival

COMING SOON

Re:imagine Derby Throughout September Déda, Artcore and Derby Festé will be transforming the city through a series of performances, exhibitions and events based around the 70th year of India’s independence. Working with artists from across the globe, nationally and throughout the region, we will present a dynamic and vibrant programme of dance, outdoor events and installations for all to enjoy. Déda will play host to some fantastic dance works including Outlands by 2Faced Dance Company: a diverse evening of work by female choreographers from India, Birmingham based Kathak sensation Sonia Sabri, Morph Dance Company lead by regional artists Subhash Viman and BBC Young Dancer of the Year 2016 (South Asian Dance) winner Vidya Patel.

This is going to be an action-packed month filled with outdoor spectacles and dynamic performances celebrating the vibrant culture of India, here in the heart of Derby. Derby Festé was established in 2007 as a partnership between some of Derby’s main cultural partners to celebrate the city and its cultural offer. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and has become an essential part of the City’s cultural offer. With a distinct emphasis on the family audience a programme of outdoor arts, visual and digital arts, performance, circus and music is presented each September. Festé aims to deliver spectacle, distinctiveness and a sense of place that encourages audiences to feel proud of the place where they live. Attracting average annual audiences in excess of 30,000 people per annum, the festival brings high quality national and international artists that would not otherwise be seen in the region and 2017 looks to be the best yet! 23

DANCE DEVELOPMENT & LEARNING

Déda Creative Arts Employer Academy

BA Dance with the University of Derby

As a Creative Arts Employer Academy, Déda has joined Derby College’s latest initiative to provide students with work experience, special projects, masterclasses and mentoring. Our involvement in this innovative and exciting initiative is designed to broaden students’ employability skills and career opportunities across the creative arts industry. As well as rehearsing and performing as part of their BTEC level two and three courses, students have been involved in various projects with us, including the annual Derby Festé. We are facilitating their learning as they gain teaching experience with our youth groups – including working with children aged 4 to 19 years, in a range of styles and techniques from Ballet to Acrobatics.

This course gives a unique experience of learning within the working environment of the East Midlands’ dedicated dance house. Based at Déda, professionally equipped studios and new purpose-built facilities provide an ideal setting for students to engage with the dance profession and beyond through teaching, producing and residencies. This specialist degree will develop you as a high quality technical dance artist for performance, entertainment, theatre or film. You also have the opportunity to apply the skills you’ve gained in a range of community, health and education settings. For more information, please contact c.limb@deda.uk.com or call 01332 374681.
