elcome to our Spring 2017 brochure and programme which all the Déda Team are extremely proud of. We always aim to bring you the best local, national and international performance from the worlds of dance and contemporary circus, but we also hope you will take part through our extensive Academy and Adult Class programme. January is a great time to start something new, so why not take up the Déda Pledge which will help you reach your own personal targets while enjoying a class in one of our professional dance studios? Please visit the website for details. If you’ve been inspired by Strictly Come Dancing, our Ballroom and Latin Beginners class might be the perfect way to satisfy your inner dancer. The Déda Academy continues to thrive, helping to build confidence, technique and social skills within the young people who attend. The arts cut across borders and in these current turbulent times we celebrate cultures from beyond our shores. This Season we welcome Theatre Absolute and Moving Spaces who present their poignant work

TRAUM themed around migration. Z˙finMalta present an evening of international choreographers, including Jose Agudo who is a past Déda Associate Artist. We welcome back Tavaziva Dance Company with their electric Africarmen which is a heady mix of raw energy and high physical technique. If our Circus performances are grabbing your attention then don’t miss Cul de Sac, a feast of Chinese Pole and juggling. The FORMAT International Photography Festival returns to Derby in March 2017 with the theme HABITAT, and Déda will be hosting some of the world’s finest photographers throughout the Festival. With the reduction in public funds to the arts we are continually working to improve in order to secure Deda’s future, and we recognise that it is through the continued support of our valued customers that we will achieve this. I hope that these pages will inspire you to visit us soon. Stephen Munn CEO and Artistic Director 3

Cul de Sac

Africarmen

Presented by José Triguero

Presented by Tavaziva

An absurd and comic duet of circus, Cul de Sac explores the sometimes gentle, sometimes brutal nature of human relationships. Featuring world-class juggling, dance and acrobatics, performers Gemma Palomar and José Triguero take us through a cycle of love, irritation, pain, euphoria, caress and carelessness as they journey beyond the stereotypical male-female relationship. Combining astonishing physicality with evocative imagery and humour, Cul de Sac is at once entertaining, troubling and touching, light and dark. Circus for grown-ups. Age Guidance: 14+ FREE post-show talk

Through a synthesis of ballet, contemporary and African dance, Bawren Tavaziva’s interpretation of the Carmen story is strikingly powerful, sensual and beautifully performed by six stunning dancers. The speciallycommissioned original soundtrack is composed and arranged by Fayyaz Virji of the Warriors International. Played out through the entanglement of desire, deceit and corruption in an African township where military corruption is rife, Carmen dangerously and defiantly ignores all warnings in the perusal of a better life but tragedy follows her like a shadow in hot sun. DANCE | CIRCUS

It’s rare nowadays not to ‘log in’ at every opportunity – the breakfast table, nights out with friends, even in bed! How well connected are you? When and how do we separate ourselves from the virtual chaos surrounding us? Combining exciting acrobatic skills and athletic dance, this energetic, thoughtprovoking performance explores our obsessive dependence with technology, asking whether our lives are ‘in’ or ‘out’ of balance? The highly skilled Joli Vyann present Imbalance in collaboration with internationally renowned choreographer Jonathan Lunn, produced by Turtle Key Arts. FREE post-show talk

TICKETS: £12 (£10)

Verve 17 presents an exhilarating programme of four distinct dance works choreographed by international artists James Cousins, Carlos Pons Guerra, Leila McMillan and Matthias Sperling. Performed by a company of eleven dancers trained at some of the world’s leading conservatoires, the work is physically daring and thought provoking. Verve is the postgraduate performance company of Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD). Each year the company commissions leading choreographers to create an exciting new programme of contemporary dance work which tours across the UK and internationally. Race Horse Company Presented by Derby Theatre and Déda, in association with Crying Out Loud on behalf of Circus Evolution

A double-bill of relevant and up-to-the-minute dance theatre from National Dance Award nominees, Company Chameleon. Words Unspoken, a dynamic short work exploring the untold secrets of the performers on stage, opens the evening. Six dancers perform flawlessly formed movements in a striking and synchronized style, creating a hypnotic effect. Witness, the main piece in this production, is a moving portrayal of how loved ones cope when mental health problems take hold of someone close. Featuring a rich mix of dance and movement styles, intimate solos, emotive duets and powerful ensembles combine to create a view of mental health which you simply won’t forget. FREE post-show talk

Super Sunday is the newest super-fun show from Race Horse Company, the acclaimed allmale Finnish circus troupe with a reputation for madcap brilliance. Big on flying, on skill and on stomach-churning thrills, it is delivered with laid-back humour on a stage dressed as a derelict funfair. Against an atmospheric soundtrack, six performers casually propel themselves ever higher with trampolines, teeterboards and catapults. A single slip and things could be messy! VISUAL ARTS 5 JANUARY – 4 MARCH

Del Coombs

Lyra Morgan

We all learn to live with our own demons. It was not until later in life that Del Coombs began to realise that his ‘it might be useful’ approach to ‘collecting’ might be a little more than ‘everyday behaviour’. Another late arrival was an understanding of his own creative ability. He has combined the two. By re-using materials, found items and ideas, he creates visual comments on his own life and the world around him. The exhibition is a culmination of three years’ work when he exploited his obsessive tendency to create three pieces of work each day, resulting in over 3,000 pieces of work. The exhibition will continue from January to December 2017, featuring thirteen different four-week presentations based on his work from 2014 to 2016.

The abstract but instinctively balanced compositions are created using unique nonbrush techniques Lyra has developed through her open and experimental approach to her practice. All her paintings are intended to evoke the calmness Lyra feels when she creates them, transforming the spaces we live in. “Each piece is created organically by being free enough in spirit to allow each work to build through a cycle of evolution.” Inspiration comes from philosophical and scientific ponderings about our relationship with water and nature. “I am fascinated with the transient nature of water and its ability to take many forms whether it be a formed yet formless cloud over a city sky or a flowing river.” Lyra Morgan is a ‘brush name’ for the established artist Fi Burke. The painterly Lyra Morgan collection is created in honour of Fi’s late mother Myra Morgan.

Ruth Gray

FORMAT Photography Festival

Ruth Gray: High Peak Junction (detail)

Laurent Chehere: Circus, Flying Houses (detail)

5 JANUARY – 4 MARCH

Ruth Gray is a mixed media artist and the subjects that really excite her have a sense of history. Townscapes or landscapes, rolling skies and hidden corners, she loves the moods of nature and the weather and seasons. While her paintings are usually representational they are often stylised or abstracted to a degree, particularly with regards to colour. Ruth aims not for realism but for capturing mood and atmosphere. No matter what her subject, she wants to create a painting that people can live with and enjoy for a long time.

FORMAT International Photography Festival is the UK’s most significant biennale of photography. This year the festival is curated around the theme of HABITAT which will explore ideas of landscape, environment, mobility, migrations, digital worlds, home, displacement, conflict and regeneration, including work that considers our impact on the world locally and internationally. We are delighted to present a number of FORMAT Artists at Déda. Including exhibitions and events, FORMAT International Photography Festival takes place in venues throughout Derby between 24 March and 23 April 2017.
