Déda celebrates 20 years! 2018 marks twenty years since Déda moved into this beautiful building on Chapel Street. Over the last twenty years we have achieved some wonderful things, working with Derby schools and community groups to improve education, health and wellbeing, and social issues with some of the hardest to reach groups in the city. We have presented high quality dance and contemporary circus to the city of Derby and created partnerships locally, nationally and internationally. Our mission is to enrich people’s lives through dance and the arts. Help us celebrate our 20th year and support a sustainable future for the organisation.

£20 could enable two people living with dementia to attend an accessible dance workshop. £200 could provide training for a teacher to deliver Arts Award activities in their school. £2,000 could establish a bursary to enable young people struggling financially to continue with their dance and contemporary circus journey. There are many ways you can support Déda, from adding a donation to your booking, volunteering your time or remembering us in your Will.

Déda is a registered charity (1053633) and your donation will have a huge impact on our next 20 years! Support us now and Arts Council England will match your donation £ for £, making your generosity go even further.

elcome to Déda’s Summer Programme in which we look forward to offering you a season of fantastic experiences. Our 20 year celebrations continue with the BA (Hons) Dance Degree Show celebrating the talent of the future as well as working alongside our partner Derby Book Festival presenting all that’s good about books in the city. Silk Road is part of the Festival and showcases the dynamic choreography of Jose Agudo who has used the novel by Peter Frankopan as the inspiration – an epic tale told through dance. Our super popular Summer Activity Programme will run for a fortnight this year starting on the 30 July allowing young people to express themselves through a host of creative activity including dance and aerial. Our partnership with Latin American dance specialists Urbano continues and as the evenings get warmer why not come along and try their fun Tango or Salsa

classes? You can then put your steps into practice at our monthly Salsa Pineapple club night. If you are in the mood to try something a bit different, our long running burlesque and variety night – LaDéDa Cabaret – is worth coming along to. Dress to impress, and make sure you book early – leave your inhibitions at the door and prepare to be delighted, inspired and possibly a little shocked! Our Visual Arts exhibitions over the summer are contrasting in style but both extremely high in quality. Derby City Photographic Club is marking the forty years that Derby has had city status with an exhibition which looks at the familiar in new ways. We also present the work of abstract painter M D Hyde who uses colour beautifully to explore the complexities of the mind. So if you are getting yourself fit for the summer or just want to see a great show, Déda is the place to be this season – its good to get involved! Stephen Munn CEO and Artistic Director

DANCE CIRCUS FRIDAY 11 AND SATURDAY 12 MAY 7.30PM

Terra Firma

BA (Hons) Dance Degree Show

Photo: Rhys Cuzons

Photo: Richard Richards

TUESDAY 8 MAY 7.30PM AT DERBY THEATRE

Presented by National Dance Company Wales In association with Déda and Derby Theatre For Wales’ national dance company; Contemporary Dance is a way to tell old stories in new ways. Pulling together vibrant physicality with memorable music and beautiful scenery. NDCWales invite you into the world of Terra Firma which tells stories drawn from the very ground on which we build our communities. Folk is a vintage fairy-tale, set in a rich fantastical world under the boughs of an upside-down tree, as darkly whimsical as it is enchanting. Tundra is a barren landscape where ultra-modern creativity blinks into life and tears pages from Russian folk dance and revolution. Atalaÿ is a watch tower from which far off lands can be seen from four points; a contagious dance influenced by the warmth of the Mediterranean. Get in touch with Kerryn at ndcwalesderby@gmail.com for more information about the Discover Dance Interactive Matinee for Schools and audiences; the perfect 90-minute introduction to dance on Wednesday 9 May at 1pm.

TICKETS: £16 (£14) 14

Presented by University of Derby and Déda An evening of assessment work created for and by the students studying on the BA (Hons) Dance degree at the University of Derby and Déda. The performance will consist of a variety of works; work that has been choreographed by the students, and pieces that have been created for them by invited artists. Two new pieces created by Kevin Edward Turner and Alula Cyr will be premiered along with an interpretation of Richard Alston’s ‘Roughcut’, re-worked by Programme Leader Alice Marshall.

TICKETS: £6

Déda works in partnership with the University of Derby producing versatile dance artists of the future.

COMING SOON

Silk Road

Save the Date!

Presented by Agudo Dance Company Silk Road is a universal and personal story of East meets West in the 21st century. In collaboration with the renowned classical Indian dancer Mavin Khoo, Agudo weaves his Flamenco roots with a unique, contemporary style.

27 – 29 September 2018 September sees the return of Derby Festé featuring crazy, colourful and chaotic performances from world-class artists, including Déda favourite Circa Tsuica.

Performed with an evocative live score, Silk Road is a fascinating and vibrant exploration of the rituals along nomadic routes. The journey conjures images of the pilgrims, monks, traders and urban dwellers that made their way from China to the Iberian Peninsula. It is a celebration of diverse cultures and dances, as strong and as delicate as silk itself. Silk Road was inspired by the book The Silk Roads – A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan.

Now or Never is an unmissable celebration in a big top on Bass’ Recreation Ground – an unforgettable experience and great for sharing with family and friends!

French Compagnie des Quidams bring their procession of Venetian characters and luminous horses to Derby as part of the Festé weekend. Bizarre, beautiful and totally unmissable – they will move through the streets as a carefully choreographed herd of dream-like creations.

We also welcome back Isle of Wightian nut job and musician Elliot Mason who combines the ordinary with the ridiculous, with songs inspired by such things as the mental anguish caused by the day they changed the name of the bathroom cleaning product from Jif to Cif. Counterbalancing the crazy, Cece Sinclair is a sassy starlet inspired by the golden era. She blends vintage glamour of classic striptease with diverse influences creating truly magnetic, exciting burlesque. And finally, acrobatic duo Deux Ailes combine grace, style and gravity-defying agility both in the air and on the ground. Unmissable.

M D Hyde M D Hyde is a contemporary artist based in Ashbourne in the Peak District. He creates expressive abstract paintings using acrylic on canvas. His work is about life as a person living with depression, those around him, and his place in the world; the highs, the lows – love, loss, mood, isolation, place and belonging, since being diagnosed with cyclic depression at the age of 30. Through his paintings, M D Hyde wants to bring a better understanding and acceptance of the issues surrounding depression, and the difficulties for those who love them, based on his own experiences. M D Hyde wants to explore some of these issues though the visual language he has created through his paintings. Exhibition launch: Wednesday 2 May 6pm

DANCE DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING

Our work with Children and Young People Déda’s Dance Development and Learning Team works across the city and county with a range of education partners including schools, colleges, in alternative provision and in health and wellbeing contexts. We design and deliver bespoke projects for each partner, with Arts Council England’s Quality Principles at the heart of our work. The Start Project is one such project which we launched in September, enabling 1440 children in five Derby Primary Schools to have the opportunity to take part in arts experiences for the very first time. This project is being jointly delivered with Artcore and funded by Children and the Arts and The Mighty Creatives. It runs for three years so we are on an exciting journey with our five schools and will be celebrating the outcomes of this project as we complete each year. Déda is also part of the Cultural Campus, Derby’s Cultural Education Partnership (DCEP), working 26

alongside Derby’s other arts organisations and the DCEP Network to provide every child and young person with opportunities to thrive in our city and experience a variety of culture in order to develop their skills and life chances and to fulfil their highest ambitions.

Our work with Adults We are working on a range of innovative projects including Dance Active, our falls prevention and dance project in partnership with Derby City Council’s Move More team. We are also co-delivering a dance and visual art project called Creative Living which aims to reduce social isolation in older people with Artcore and Derby City Council and producing All Dance for Derbyshire County Council, a project that enables disabled people in Derbyshire to access high quality dance experiences including taking part in a professional performance.

Déda Creative Arts Employer Academy

BA (Hons) Dance with University of Derby

As a Creative Arts Employer Academy, Déda has joined Derby College’s latest initiative to provide students with work experience, special projects, masterclasses and mentoring.

This course gives a unique experience of learning within the working environment of the East Midlands’ dedicated dance house.

Our involvement in this innovative and exciting initiative is designed to broaden students’ employability skills and career opportunities across the creative arts industry. As well as rehearsing and performing as part of their BTEC level two and three courses, students have been involved in various projects with us, including the annual Derby Festé. We are facilitating their learning as they gain teaching experience with our youth groups – including working with children aged 4 to 19 years, in a range of styles and techniques from Ballet to Acrobatics.

Based at Déda, professionally equipped studios and new purpose-built facilities provide an ideal setting for students to engage with the dance profession and beyond through teaching, producing and residencies. This specialist degree will develop you as a high quality technical dance artist for performance, entertainment, theatre or film. You also have the opportunity to apply the skills you’ve gained in a range of community, health and education settings.
