Triple Bill of Female Choreographers

Wasteland

Thursday 5 March 7.30pm

#internationalwomensday

Presented by Gary Clarke in association with Déda and Derby Theatre

Three talented choreographers will present work that explores themes of empowerment, relationships and the defiant image of femininity in a gripping triple bill of performances.

Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 February 7.30pm at Derby Theatre

Yin

Wasteland, Gary Clarke’s new dance theatre sequel to COAL, about the collapse of the mining community, continues the story, following the next generation headfirst into a gritty story of loss, hope, tragedy and survival based in the illegal rave scene of the 1990s.

In Chinese philosophy yin and yang describe how opposite forces are interdependent and need each other to co-exist.

“Outstanding” – The Times (on COAL) “Visceral” – The Stage (on COAL) “Profound” – The Big Issue (on COAL)

Age: Recommended for ages 14+ (schools guidance)

Co-commissioned by: Nottingham Playhouse, Tramway, Cast, Dance4, The Place, DanceXchange, Gulbenkian, Contact Theatre, Grand Theatre Blackpool, Civic Barnsley, Yorkshire Dance, with additional support from Lawrence Batley Theatre, Northern Ballet, Leeds Dance Partnership, Stirling Pit Women and public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

OSCiLLATE

Performed by four female artists, Yin reflects upon these universal symbols, drawing inspiration from the natural lifecycle and lived experiences. Highly visual, captivating choreography, haunting vocals, piano, baroque and sound design subtly crossover, playfully questioning society’s perceptions of sexuality and power.

Good Blood

presented by Keira Martin in collaboration with Sioda Adams Good Blood looks closely at the relationship of two sisters. Keira and Sioda use dance, live music, song and storytelling to bring hilarious, nostalgic and familiar family scenarios to the stage. Their honesty and humour sheds light on the bonds that hold us together, the people that make us who we are and the ties that bind us.

Like Honey

presented by Becky Namgauds In Like Honey, beauty and ugliness explosively collide through noise, aggression and blood creating a live symbiosis of sound and movement. Drawing on contemporary dance and krump, challenging the divine feminine and gendered shame of menstruation. Energy pulses through layered vocal rhythms, animating the dance. Yin

Good Blood

Presented by Old Kent Road

OSCiLLATE is a ground-breaking tap dance experience that explores human interaction and the effects of miscommunication in relationships. Using light, rhythmic expression, tap dance and movement the dancers take you on a journey of mixed emotions and discoveries. A twisted exploration of trying to remember and not remembering. In this two-hander featuring; tightwire, aerial straps and all manner of circus skills, frustration and distorted moments arise from each attempt and failure to remain connected to the present world. Lola explores themes of loneliness, social exclusion and dementia through the lens of black comedy and circus. Physical comedy and circus stunts bring humour and lightness to serious subject matter, always with a strong spirit of the absurd. Age: Recommend for ages 16+

6 Feet, 3 Shoes is a celebration of friendship across borders, told through feisty, percussive flamenco, Scottish and contemporary dance and featuring an energetic cast of dancers and musicians, exhilarating live guitar and fiddle. VISUAL ARTS

Greatest Hits

Walt Shaw

Presented by Del Coombs

Monday 6 January – Saturday 7 March

Monday 6 January – Saturday 7 March

Walt Shaw is an artist working in South Derbyshire, whose work has been exhibited widely throughout the UK and in Europe. His work usually integrates a variety of different media; such as collage, acrylics, graphite and inks. The pieces are abstract and explore the tensions between a free, spontaneous approach and a very controlled and delicate execution. Each piece begins with experimentation and moves through to a controlled refinement through this process.

A reprise of Del’s three-year 36-part exhibition at Déda. Greatest Hits expresses the pleasure he felt creating the work and as he says allows him an opportunity to say publicly ‘I did that, and I like it’ the ultimate ego stroke! There are also 12 new pieces in which he combines text with his block print series created by throwing a die. For Del, ‘this final exhibition is only one of a series, not an ending. All things begin, encapsulate time then finish and something else takes their place.’ Exhibition Launch: Saturday 11 January 6.30-8.00pm

Walt is also an experimental percussionist who works with a variety of instruments and scrap and homemade objects. There is a huge overlap in process between his percussion work and his visual art. Exhibition Launch: Saturday 11 January 6.30-8.00pm. Walt will perform a short solo as part of opening of the exhibition.

In the Dark Presented by ArtSpace Loughborough

Thursday 12 March – Saturday 9 May ArtSpace Loughborough presents an exhibition on the theme ‘In the Dark’. Members were encouraged to interpret this in their own way. The works in this exhibition explore the dramatic visual contrast between light and dark and some on the more subtle relationship between the two at dusk. Some artists have interpreted the words in a psychological way: being ‘in the dark’ can imply lack of knowledge or even secrets. Exhibition Launch: Thursday 12 March 6.30-8.00pm

Fluid Dynamics: Dance in Unexpected Places Presented by David Wilson Clarke

Thursday 12 March – Saturday 9 May Where should dance be performed? In a studio, a theatre? Why not in remote places, seldom seen. The focus of dance is on the movement, but environment and costume change our perception of dance and influences the dancer’s improvisation. David started to invite dancers to interesting locations to learn how to photograph dance and forgot to stop. This provided a rich variety of photoshoots, working with both experienced dancers and those at the beginning of their career. David is a freelance photographer of dance, performance art and art documentation. Exhibition Launch: Thursday 12 March 6.30-8.00pm
