elcome to our Autumn Season! In Autumn, we always look forward to the incredible Derby Festé which will transform the city on 29 and 30 September with performances and participation opportunities for everyone. Don’t miss the World of Circus at Bass’ Rec on the Friday or the mass Garba dance on Saturday evening in Derby Market Place, celebrating the 70th year of Indian independence – a unique and special experience, here in Derby. Our own performance programme is packed with amazing dance and circus shows, with something for everyone, including Zero from our fantastic Associate Artists Humanhood, as well as a fabulous Family Festival in October half-term. Our Christmas Show this year is Moonfall, by Hikapee Theatre, a fantastical story of a Princess trying to find her way to the Moon. Recently, we have taken time to talk with our customers to find out what you think of our class programme and have developed some new things for you to try, whilst continuing to offer our fabulous favourites alongside these exciting additions. We have added in two new

daytime classes, Hatha Yoga on Mondays with Phillipa Wilson and Ballet on Wednesdays with Lara Ross. For a dance-style workout we have introduced Dance Fit and Barre Fit to our evening programme and for adults who want to get to grips with our aerial kit, there is a new Introduction to Aerial course. Our Déda Academy has also expanded with the addition of a fabulous new Youth Dance and Circus Performance Company as well as a doubling the amount of Junior and Youth Aerial classes we offer. We have added two new drop-in classes to Saturdays with Hip Hop Minis and Hip Hop Youth. Our partnership with Latin social dance experts Urbano has also grown, from the Argentine Tango classes which they lead on Monday evenings to new Salsa classes on Thursdays. Look out for the new monthly Latin party night – Salsa Pineapple. We look forward to seeing you soon! Clare Limb Head of Dance Development & Learning 3

Double Bill

Presented by Humanhood

Presented by Simple Cypher and WireDO

“Since time is distance in space, time is memory on the structure of space. Without memory, there is no time. Without time, there is no memory.” Nassim Haramein Submerge into Humanhood’s hypnotic and powerful piece Zero, a visually and sonically mesmerising performance of immersive sound, hypnotising lights and virtuosic movement where two dancers entangle through a ritualistic journey. Experience this spiritual and tribal dance and get transported into a dream-like world of imagination and beauty. Recommended for ages 11+.

Hanna Moisala’s WireDO, tells a mesmerizing story of stepping out to the unknown. Using her body, a tightwire and a physical composition that draws on the Japanese rope art of Shibari, Wiredo explores the inner balance of human behaviour. Daring tightwire stunts and skilled rope manipulation offer an unprecedented spectacle. National Centre for Circus Arts graduates Kieran Warner and Christopher Thomas (Simple Cypher) both specialise in Cyr Wheel and share a passion for Hip Hop. Style, originality and unity have had a profound influence on their development as circus performers – and this piece. Expect innovative play with a real wow factor from these two cheeky characters!

Rewind Forward

Long Shot

Presented by Yorke Dance Project

Presented by PanGottic

Rewind Forward is an exhilarating evening of dance from world-renowned masters of choreography, Sir Kenneth MacMillan and Robert Cohan, and new-generation choreographers Royal Ballet choreographer Charlotte Edmonds and Artistic Director, Yolande Yorke-Edgell. MacMillan’s rarely seen Sea of Troubles is inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet; Cohan’s new work is a revival and reimagining of an earlier work Testament that now portrays six athletic dancers moving through twilight. Edmonds’ work Self evokes the passionate world of a man struggling with desire. Completing the programme is Untethered, in which the whole company takes the audience on a journey of unravelling the ties that can bind our mind and spirit. Recommended for ages 12+.

Long shot n. An attempt or undertaking that offers much, but in which there is little chance for success. Long Shot is a stripped-back circus performance where the audience is in charge. Using handcrafted remote control contraptions, tight choreography and laugh out loud humour, PanGottic bring to life one man’s belief in the near impossible, the almost unachievable and the highly unlikely. This show pushes the boundaries of how much risk an audience can bear, or be willing to create, by placing the routine and repetition of a highly skilled juggler in the same room as extreme unpredictability. Push. The. Button.

Featuring Future Groove’s Paul Zimmerman on drums, Sue Lynch on tenor sax/flute, Lesley Booth on bass and Yul Emirali on keys. 6 Oct: John Law's Congregation John Law has carved out a niche for himself as one of Europe’s leading jazz, contemporary and improvising pianist/composers. His music is a must for fans of Pharaoh Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and classic sounds of 1950s Blue Note albums.

Suppe Presented by We Are Kunst Velkommen to a night of cerebral agitation in celebration of Kunst Gallery's first exhibition at Déda. Suppe will kick off in characteristic Kunst style with a stimulating monologue entitled JFK, LSD, CIA, Mind Control and Hippy Conspiracy from sociologist Andrew Fergus Wilson, followed by contemporary performance from artists Joanna Leah Geldard and David Culleton. Next up will be funky punk masters Moon Bullet who will provide a unique mélange of stand-up comedy and musical artistry, followed closely by Macclesfield’s favourite 3-piece, the Cows, performing a beautifully-crafted set of ’60s garage. Come and experience the Kunst suppe of creative genius. You may just like it.

LaDéDa Burlesque Cabaret

LaDéDa Burlesque Cabaret

Presented by Scarlett Daggers and Déda

Presented by Scarlett Daggers and Déda

Produced by and starring racy redhead Scarlett Daggers and hosted by lyrical lothario Stage Door Johnny, LaDéDa is a lavish evening, full of world class variety and cabaret. October’s line-up features couture-crazed beauty Eliza DeLite. Fascinated by fashion, old vaudeville, opulence and MGM glitz, Eliza’s acts embody 1920s art deco glamour and the vibrancy of the ’50s and ’60s. Combining exquisite costuming and devilish curves Pinky DeVille graces the Déda stage with her rock ’n’ roll swagger. With routines that are equal parts inventive, comedic and terrifying, Crimson Skye returns with a plan for world domination, and multitalented Edd Muir joins the party with acrobatics, whips and fire! Hold tight!

All your Christmas wishes will come true with femme fatale Missy Malone; a heady cocktail of 1950s bombshell and classic rock chick. Versatile and passionate multi-disciplinary circus performer and producer, Daisy Black joins us with skills ranging from graceful aerial artistry to swallowing razorblades, spinning flaming hula hoops and dancing on broken glass! Yowch! Blonde bombshell Cherry Shakewell returns to the Déda stage and we’re not sure if it was the sea air or that she was just born to do it, but this Brighton girl sure knows how to tassel and tease!

Geoff Machin: Retrospective

Artcore: Bridge the Gap

Geoff Machin was born and raised in Derbyshire. Following student years at Chelsea School of Art, London, he lived in various parts of the UK before returning in 1973. His home and studio are just outside Ashbourne. Over the years, Geoff has held solo shows in several municipal galleries, including Déda in 2010, as well as taking part in major national events such as John Moores Liverpool Exhibitions. His beautifully crafted, inventive and intriguing abstract compositions always attract much interest, and this second show at Déda will contain new work not previously exhibited. Exhibition Launch: Thursday 7 September 6.30–8.00pm

Working in partnership with Artcore, Déda are proud to present Bridge the Gap: An exhibition by two local artists, responding to the theme celebrating India’s 70 years of independence. The work exhibited has been produced during a two-month-long supported residency at Artcore, as part of the Art Attachments programme. Art Attachments is an umbrella project that supports artists offering opportunities for professional and artistic development. The Bridge the Gap programme offers artists the opportunity to create new work through a residency programme, along with additional support to develop their practice. Exhibition Launch: Wednesday 27 September 6.o0–7.30pm

We Are Kunst

Folding Holding Folding: the fool and his money (detail)

box office 01332 370911

Six artists whose focus is firmly on aspects of human condition examine how and what moves and motivate those around them. Coming together from all parts of the country, Jackie Berridge, Helen Latham, Anna Pinkster, Sue Stone, Paul Warren and Ellie Young use painting, drawing and stitched textiles to tell stories of their observations of people and their memories and emotions. Selected by David Manley, Emeritus Professor of Art, University of Derby. Exhibition Launch: Thursday 2 November 6.30–8.00pm

Originally launched in 2015 in the village of Hulland Ward, the Kunst Gallery owners quickly capitalised on an opportunity to move to the creative hotbed of Belper and flung open the gallery’s doors in May 2016 to an unsuspecting public. An agitating addition to the already thriving independent shop scene, Kunst is fast becoming a nationally recognised alternative arts venue, blending music, academia, theatre, spoken word and film. Kunst contains a small collection of expressionistic art forms, including painting, sculpture, print and photography as well as posters and a small selection of vinyl. This exhibition will showcase some of Kunst’s chief creative protagonists, including Ralph McGaul, Adam Quinn, Julian Woodcock, David Culleton and Eleanor Adair. Exhibition Launch: Saturday 4 November 7.30pm £6 See page 20 for details 25

Déda Creative Arts Employer Academy

BA Dance with the University of Derby

As a Creative Arts Employer Academy, Déda has joined Derby College’s latest initiative to provide students with work experience, special projects, masterclasses and mentoring. Our involvement in this innovative and exciting initiative is designed to broaden students’ employability skills and career opportunities across the creative arts industry. As well as rehearsing and performing as part of their BTEC level two and three courses, students have been involved in various projects with us, including the annual Derby Festé. We are facilitating their learning as they gain teaching experience with our youth groups – including working with children aged 4 to 19 years, in a range of styles and techniques from Ballet to Acrobatics.

This course gives a unique experience of learning within the working environment of the East Midlands’ dedicated dance house. Based at Déda, professionally equipped studios and new purpose-built facilities provide an ideal setting for students to engage with the dance profession and beyond through teaching, producing and residencies. This specialist degree will develop you as a high quality technical dance artist for performance, entertainment, theatre or film. You also have the opportunity to apply the skills you’ve gained in a range of community, health and education settings. For more information, please contact or call 01332 374681.
