The Worship of God

Confession of Faith

October 26, 2008 Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passed during the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children not yet in kindergarten will be dismissed prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.

Welcome and Preparation for Worship Worship is central to God’s covenant because it is the primary arena in which we come to learn more about His exceedingly great and precious promises. As we sing to God, we are reminded of what He has done for us in Jesus Christ. As we pray, we are led to claim promises in ways that give us greater confidence in the Lord. Listening to the Word of God proclaimed, our understanding of God’s promises grows, and we become more convinced that He is able to do all that He has declared. And in responding to His Word we set our hearts anew on a course of claiming God’s promises and living within His covenant. At the end of worship we feel refreshed, renewed, and ready to go forth and live for God according to the truth of His Word and the glorious prospect of His exceedingly great and precious promises. – T.M. Moore, “I Will Be Your God”

Psalm 150

John Piper

Jesus died in my place, the righteous for the unrighteous. God counted him, who was sinless, to be a sinner, so that in him I, who am a sinner, could be counted righteous. He opened the blind eyes of my heart and brought me to faith and repentance. By his Spirit he has come to live in my heart through faith, and is slowly working his character into my stubborn will. Not only that, but this Jesus Christ created the world, including me, and holds it in being by the word of his power. Every breath I take, every beat of my heart, every moment of seeing and hearing, every movement of my mind, is owing to the sustaining grace and creative power of Jesus. All other acknowledgments and thanks are secondary and dependent on this one.

Jesus! What a Friend for Sinners

Pritchard

Jesus! What a friend for sinners! Jesus! Lover of my soul! Friends may fail me, foes assail me; He, my Savior, makes me whole. Hallelujah! What a Savior! Hallelujah! What a friend! Saving, helping, keeping, loving. He is with me to the end. Jesus! What a strength in weakness! Let me hide myself in Him; Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing, He, my strength, my vict'ry wins. Jesus! What a help in sorrow! While the billows o’er me roll, Even when my heart is breaking, He, my comfort, helps my soul.

Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!

Come, Christians, Join to Sing

Bateman

Come, Christians join to sing, Alleluia! Amen! Loud praise to Christ our King; Alleluia! Amen! Let all, with heart and voice, before His throne rejoice; Praise is His gracious choice, Alleluia! Amen! Come, lift your hearts on high, Alleluia! Amen! Let praises fill the sky; Alleluia! Amen! He is our Guide and Friend; to us He'll condescend; His love shall never end, Alleluia! Amen! Praise yet our Christ again, Alleluia! Amen! Life shall not end the strain; Alleluia! Amen! On heaven's blissful shore, His goodness we'll adore, Singing forevermore, "Alleluia! Amen!"

We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in his name. 2

Jesus! I do now receive Him; more than all in Him I find. He hath granted me forgiveness; I am His, and He is mine.

Proverbs 28:13

Corporate Confession of Sin Have mercy on us O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion, blot out our transgression. Wash away all our iniquity and cleanse us from our sin. For we know our transgressions, and our sin is always before us. Against You, You only have we sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You are proved right when You speak and justified when You judge. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon in Christ

1 Peter 3:18

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

Worship with Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Song Indescribable

Story

From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea, Creation’s revealing your majesty. From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring, Every creature unique in the song that it sings; All exclaiming, Indescribable, uncontainable, You placed the stars in the sky and you know them by name. You are amazing God! All powerful, untamable, Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim, You are amazing God! Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go? Or seen Heavenly storehouses laden with snow? Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light, Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night? None can fathom, Indescribable, uncontainable, You placed the stars in the sky and you know them by name. You are amazing God! Incomparable, unchangeable, You know the depths of my heart and you love me the same. You are amazing God! You are amazing God!

Breathe

Barnett

This is the air I breathe, this is the air I breathe, Your holy presence living in me. This is my daily bread, this is my daily bread, Your holy Word spoken to me. And I, I’m desp’rate for You, And I, I’m lost without You.

Our Great God Eternal God unchanging, mysterious and unknown, Your boundless love unfailing in grace and mercy shown. Bright seraphim in endless flight around Your glorious throne; They raise their voices day and night in praise to You alone. Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Lord, we are weak and frail, helpless in the storm. Surround us with Your angels, hold us in Your arms. Our cold and ruthless enemy, his pleasure is our harm. Rise up, O Lord, and he will flee before our sov’reign God. Let every creature in the sea and every flying bird; Let every mountain, every field and valley of the earth; Let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe Sing praises to the living God who rules them by His word.

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Revelation 7:1-13

Rev. Bill Nikides

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper A Word About Communion – The bread and wine you see on the Communion table may not look like much to the casual observer. In fact, it is merely bread and wine. What makes this meal special is that the Lord Jesus Christ is spiritually present in a unique way. This sacrament is not something to be taken lightly but neither is it a time to be somber; rather, we should be filled with thankfulness and joy. Our Savior, out of His great mercy, bids His people to come to this meal. If you are a member of a church who embraces the Gospel of Jesus Christ and are at peace with your fellow Christians, we welcome you to this table. Come and consider with us our Lord’s body and shed blood symbolized in the bread and wine. Rejoice with us in our union with Him and with each other as His Covenant people. For those not taking Communion today, we encourage you to carefully think on the prayers found in the section entitled: “Prayers for Those Not Communing”, and we look forward to the day when you may join us in this meal.

Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus

Lemmel

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace.

Benediction4

4, 5, & 6-year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173. Just as God has the first word in worship, he also has the last word. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing. We look up and extend our hands out in a posture of receiving the blessing of God. 4

Prayers of Meditation for Those Not Communing Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I owed. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Him as Savior. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
