LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Community newspapers are vital in today’s society. Getting a brief in the paper about an upcoming event or fundraiser is a critical part of success. Having a journalist/photographer cover an event is a way to ensure the group’s visibility, to let people know what your group is doing and why. And using the letters to the editor section to thank those who attended, sponsored and contributed to the event is a way to make sure they’ll come back and participate next time. Although there is no meaningful media competition for local newspapers, the challenge is from Facebook and other social media sites. You may have heard that newspapers are dead, but that’s not the case, at least not locally. We face a challenge in how to change the business model so it will make economic sense so the paper will be sustainable. The good news is our online subscribers are increasing weekly, and we've doubled our print circulation. We’re counting on you, our readers, to keep reading The Hobsonville Flyer, either in print, which will continue to expand or online, which isn't going away anytime soon. OPINIONS Letter to Fetcher Living Can you please explain the design concept for the townhouses in the Kowhai Ridge development in West Auckland? My concern as a former leaky home owner is the lack of eaves or any design features to protect windows from water ingress? It looks to be a very sparse, institutional design aesthetic very unrelated to the surrounding 'bush setting' in the marketing material and with the mixed residential designs of the existing neighbourhood. Auckland homeowners have suffered too much too much from poor residential design and cost-cutting

building practices. It is very sad to see that the beautiful open space paddocks on Moire road have given way to such ugly architecture and concrete. It is possible to create beautiful, lowcost housing that enhances the life experience of the occupants. These buildings are depressing even to look at let alone come home to for years. I certainly hope that Fletcher Living will not live to regret their decisions around the design of this subdivision which will come at the expense of today’s desperate buyers if these buildings fail. HISTORY BASE BY AARON NELSON History of Cold War RNZAF Hobsonville Part 2: The start of the cold war 1945-1949. In part 1 I started to talk about the change for Hobsonville that the end of the Second World War brought and the start of the cold war. In the early Cold war, Hobsonville was the scene for New Zealand’s first Jet fighter. The RNZAF took delivery of Gloster Meteor FIII (EE395) in December 1945 and was shipped to New Zealand via Royal Navy Aircraft carrier arriving in Auckland on the 23rd January 1946. Was barge transferred to Hobsonville where on the 23rd January 1946 it was uncrated and made ready for testing. By March 1946 it had acquired it's RNZAF serial number of NZ6001. It first flew in New Zealand (at Hobsonville) at 1035 hours on 12 February 1946 flown by Squadron Leader Bob McKay. This was the very first Jet ever in New Zealand skies. The RNZAF Purchased from the RAF for £5,000 pounds ($305,953NZD in 2018) on 15 March 1950 and became the RNZAF's first jet aircraft The Air Ministry, initially wanted £25,000 for the Meteor! The RNZAF counter-offered with £5000, aware that Australian and Canadian loan Meteors had already been written off. Sadly the very first Aircraft met with a tragic end, its final flight was from Ohakea to Whenuapai on 16 September 1950 in the hands of Squadron Leader J. Wenden. Converted to instructional airframe INST147 with the TTS, Hobsonville on 19 September 1950. Declared surplus in March 1957 and sold by tender to A. Elliot, Onehunga in May 1957. The engine was sold, and the rest of the aircraft melted down. One Derwent engine from NZ6001 is currently on display at MOTAT. A total of 3 F111/T7’s served with the RNZAF 1950-1957. The other two Meteors were; WH206 (T7) delivered 25 January 1952 and served with No.14 Squadron, Nicosia, Cyprus in October 1952, it ran out of fuel and abandoned near Mogadishu, Somaliland on 20 January 1959. WL400 (T7) Delivered 02 July No.14 Squadron, Nicosia, Cyprus in October 1952. Returned to the RAF 1955 Scrapped 1957.

Speakers have included health experts, travellers, politicians, speakers from Habitat Homes and photographers, women in business and culinary experts. Each member is allocated to a committee, feels involved and contributes to that area. No one is forced to do anything they don’t want to do and with our busy lives, this is important. It is set to transform an area of now under-utilised waterfront land at the eastern edge of Hobsonville Point into an active seaside village consisting of a considered blend of quality retail, hospitality, commercial and residential offerings.

Mention the word sustainability, and your thoughts might turn to the environment. But while the environment considerations are critical, they won’t on their own result in a thriving and sustainable community. That’s why our SDF reaches far beyond the environmental to also encompass economic, social and cultural objectives. We like to think that we were ahead of our time in shaping a practical framework for a sustainable development in this way!

Located only 11km from the CBD and connected by ferry, bus and both north and west motorways, Catalina Bay is ideally situated to become a thriving hub for the burgeoning Hobsonville Point community, as well as an attractive destination within the wider Auckland area. Willis Bond successfully acquired the rights to develop this land in August 2016 and has engaged Cheshire Architects to masterplan the development. A cornerstone of the project is the recognition of the site’s rich and important history; it was owned by the Royal New Zealand Air Force and was historically the home and launching site for the impressive Catalina flying-boats. The site will be developed as a multi-stage masterplan, beginning with the refurbishment of seven existing air force buildings to deliver a mixture of hospitality, commercial, office and retail offerings and to successfully re-house the popular Farmers Market. We continue to work with a range of local and central government agencies, private sector partners, and local community groups to achieve our goals in each of these four areas. Our membership to the Sustainable Business Network and the New Zealand Green Building Council, and our collaboration with the Hobsonville Point Residents Society and the Te Kawerau a Maki and Ngati Whatua o Kaipara iwi, for example, has been hugely valuable to what we are aiming to deliver. APRIL PROPERTY REPORT So what’s news in housing in the Northwest? If numbers through open homes is something to go by then our well marketed homes are showing the market is very strong. We have had fantastic numbers.

I am asked every day what’s the property market like? For now I answer very good for buyers, good results for vendors and the rental market seems buoyant here as well.

Many people are still looking to move into The Point, the houses with a bit of land always get their interest. They are looking widely as there is a lot of options out there at the moment.

Currently running three auction campaigns with solid numbers every day we have been open.

They see Hobsonville as top of the market. I counter this with the fact that the Point is only about 1/3 built, building costs keep rising and there is still decent lead time to complete your build. Congrats to the vendors in Bomb Point with their $1.950 million sale last week. An impressive auction result! Water views and new home will fetch a decent price no matter the suburb of Auckland. It seems we are getting a lot of interest ahead of the Huapai and Riverhead spaces due to the scrutiny the transport hassles have getting out of there onto the motorway. Lack of public transport options etc. It is great to speak of our larger ferry that has been put on and the vision of less cars more options as is the nirvana we seek Hobsonville. This was a proposed question for Q and A when I mentioned it last issue. Scott Point is chugging along with land sales continuing at a hectic speed. The value for money there I have spoken about at length, certainly good bang for your dollar there.

THE I-HUNCH: If you’re reading this on your iPhone, chances are you’re not sitting up straight. In fact, you’re probably in what Kiwi based physiotherapist Steve August calls the “iHunch” position (also known as “text neck”), This position is detrimental to our body because when we lean forward 60 degrees or more to scroll through Facebook or Snapchat, our necks are forced to support the additional 5-6kg that our heads weigh, which increases the strain on our necks to a whopping 25kg!!! This may explain why physios are seeing more teenagers with “dowagers” humps that were once only seen in elderly women.

The Problem: It turns out; your smartphone addiction isn’t just taking a toll on your physical well being. It’s also bad for your emotional health. A study on the correlation between slouching and self-esteem found that people who answered interview questions in a slouched position compared to an upright position gave more negative answers and had significantly lower self-esteem and mood, and much greater fear factor than those sitting upright.

The “iHunch” may also affect our memory, based on a study from the Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy that also divided participants — this time who were clinically depressed — into a slouching group and an upright group. Both groups were shown a list of positive and negative words and then asked to recall them. Those who sat upright recalled about the same amount of negative and positive words, but those that slouched recalled significantly more negative words than positive ones. The Fix: To protect both your physical body and mental health, keep your shoulders back and head up when using your iPhone. Regular back massage and g e n t l e stretching can also help maintain elasticity and movement of the muscles. Lastly, yet most simply, b e c o m e more aware of the toil that the “iHunch” takes on your mood, memory, and behaviour. HOW TO IMPROVE CIRCULATION Avoiding a sedentary lifestyle may help to improve circulation. Jogging and avoiding sitting still for too long are both steps to take. If a person wants to improve their circulation, there are some obvious places to start. These include: • stopping smoking tobacco products • reducing intake of saturated fats

ORIGINS OF LAW - BY JENNIFER GEORGE HOW TO LOSE YOUR CASTLE A family trust is a legal way to hold and protect your assets for you and your family both now and into the future. History of the family trust Trusts go all the way back to England in the 12th century and the time of the Crusades. The husband and father would go off to fight the war in southern Europe and leave his family and transfer the ownership of his lands to a neighbour or friend or relative to manage the estate and pay and receive feudal dues on the understanding that it would be conveyed back to him as the ‘true’ owner on his return. However, on their return, they often found that the ‘legal’ owner has no intention of returning the lands. To make it worse English law did not recognise this arrangement so the disgruntled Crusader would then petition the King who in turn referred it to the Lord Chancellor. The Lord Chancellor would then decide the case according to his conscience, and so the principle of equity was born. The Lord Chancellor would consider it “unconscionable” that the legal owner could go back on his word and deny the claims of the Crusader (the “true” owner) and return the land to the Crusader. Over time it became known that the Lord Chancellor’s court would continually recognise the claim of a returning Crusader and that the legal owner would hold the land for the benefit of the original owner, who would be compelled to convey it back when requested. The Crusader was the “beneficiary” and the neighbour/ friend or relative the “trustee”. The term “use of land” was coined, and in time developed into what we know now as a “trust”.

I ordered 3D fondant cakes with banana flavour, and to me, personally; I feel fondants are there to be eaten, so it is essential that they taste great. To my surprise, the fondant was thinly rolled and very much unlike those bought in the shops. It did not clash with the cake, which itself was moist, luscious and fluffy. With the creamy cheese frosting that bounded them together, the whole gateau was a fantastic fusion that pleased my sweet tooth.
