The Shape of Things: “The Submarine” Group 5 Documention

The first thing we did as a group was begin to break down the essay. Nisha seperated the paragraphs to make them more understandable, Chapman highlighted words that seemed to have an important significance, Oli broke those words into two catergories - Good and Evil - and I selected visually stimulating phrases.

Scans of our sketchbooks demonstrating our understanding of the essay.

When seperating the words into the Good and Evil catergories, we noticed that there was about a 50/50 balance between them. We instinctivly noticed that this reflected the mood of the essay, The battle between what is Good and what is Evil, the battle between the Utopian world and Dystopia.

Experimental layouts by Oli Fowler.

After we had examined the essay, we began thinking about ways of presenting the essay in a method that would also illustrate the message of the essay. We looked at different type of layouts: playing with the idea of a “Submarine which was the title of the essay as well as a metaphorical vessal in the essay.

Text composition experiments by Nisha Gouveia.

Nisha and Debora looked at the compostion of the text. We played with the possibility of changing its direction, its placement on the page, the kerning and leading.

that very reason, successful cathedral of knowledge.

The correspondence between scientists and philosophers, artists and theologians, who created this Noah’s Ark to escape the flood, has survived in part. To illustrate the prevailing intellectual climate of the times, I quote form one of those historic letters. ‘I am aware’, it says, that my training as a chemist does not qualify me in the slightest to be the saviour of humanity. I am myself unsure about the motives inducing me to participate in our insane experiment to stand out against an inescapable development. The human race appears to be condemned to destruction as a result of mistakes and wrong doings; and it sometimes seems to me that our attempt to suspend this sentence is highly sinful.

belief and knowledge and art.

The fact that this attempt failed because it was dominated by knowledge - that is by science - and not by belief, as in the case of the gothic cathedrals, does not make these people any less important; in fact it makes them more so. With this observation, let us leave the short lived domination of the world by the submarine, that unsuccessful and, for that very reason, successful cathedral of knowledge.

Debora looked at creating shapes with the text on the pages. whether is be on one page or on a double page spread. She also played with the leadind of the text to create like a sinking effect with the text.

Oli and Nisha sketchbooks and image research by Remi.

Initial cover ideas by Oli Fowler.

While as a group we looked at what format we where foing to produce this publication in, Cahpman began researching and trying out different types of binding: Japensese stitch binding, saddle stich with thread, perfect binding.

We spent a whole day looking at image making. We thought we could include some abstract images to reflect the message in the essay. When we came back to look at what we did, we noticed that we had looked at cover ideas and the possibilty of using coloured paper though out the book.

Concept Revew: To portray the chaning mood of the essay in the publication through the use of colour and intensity of the text subtlely. To ask ourselves why and what if during the process of developing the publicaton. To project the mood of the essay through the design of the book.

Deciding what type face we were going to use was also one of the big decisions we made as a group. Unanoumsly we decided very quickly to use Gill Sans but after one of the crits with the tutors, we realised that or choice of type face had to have a very clear reason and be able to work with our essay. Some of the suggestions we were given was to use a more “international” typeface as Gill Sans is very British and the essay is about a global battle of Good and Evil. We looked at FF Info and DIN but we still didn’t feel like they were quite right. We talked about looking at a typeface that was designed at around the same time as the Industrial Revolution or the late 19th century, early 20th century. We selected a number of different fonts and used them with the essay text and compared. Century was going to be our typeface. After another review and analysis, we went back to the drawing board and decided to use Sabon. It seemed that we were set to use Sabon but after some decisions we made with the cover of the book we needed to know if Sabon was availble in the letterpress department. It was not. We needed a typeface that could be used digitally but also in letterpress.

Printing Decisions Print Method: Risograph from Hatopress Cover: Grey Textured Paper from GFSmith title to be embossed on the cover Books in image (clockwise from top left) • OpenBooks(Volumes) Edited by Charlotte Cheetham & Sophie Demay Publisher: Association Catalyst, Paris Designer: Sophie Demay & Lola Halifa-Legrand Pages: 220pp Dimensions: 130x190cmm ISBN: 9781853322914 • GFSmith Sample Book • Basic Design Format Book : n. the shape and size of a book etc. [Gavin] Ambrose, [Paul] Harris. / Ambrose, Gavin. / Lausanne AVA, c2005. ISBN: 9782940373284

We looked at different ways of subtley show the text sinking through the way we laid it out on the page. We decided we would have it each paragraph moving down a line on a each page. We also introduced a baseline that would become the point where the text would fade to a lighter shade of black.

After heading down to letterpress we decided to use Bembo as our typface. By then we had already received our order of textured paper from GFSmith and had it cut down from its original A2 size down to SRA4 ready to be trimmed and binded later. With some of the off cuts, we practised the embossing of the title and looked at the equipment we would have to use.

After sorting out the typeface we sorted out the composition of the text and began thinking about pagination. As we were going to use a Risoprinter through Hatopress, there were specific requirements about the print ready PDFs and their margins. This was very complicated and had to get some help to try and get our heads around it. There were several dummy books as a result of this.

Images of our publication in its print ready format.

We had a final presentation and crit with the whole class where we explain our concept and decisions behind the design for the essay. We had a good responce and so headed to double checking the text so that we would have any major mistakes. While we proof read the essay we did pick up on some errors with some spellings which we quickly fixed. After triple checking and proof reading the essay we sent it off to print.

Our printed book in their sheets ready for trimming and binding.

Hatopress also gave us a small notebook made out of offcuts of other works printed through them. It is actually quite beautiful. I don’t believe that I will be using it as note book but rather as a little book in its self as reference.

Nisha prepped the sheets for trimming. This was a very important and crucial part of the whole project. We all double checked all the dimensions and margins because one mistake could cost us the whole book. There was one small error that had to be adjusted but other than that we were ready for the final trimming.

Stills of a short video I made while having our sheets trimmed by the guillotine in the Letterpress Studio.

With the sheets of paper trimmed we began folding and scoring the pages and placing them in groups. I believe there were over 20 books. We also placed the covers that earlier during the week we got ready for binding.

There was a saddle stitch stapler in the 2nd year Illustration Studio that we found out about and headed there to bind our books. We could have used a normal long stapler to bind it but we didn’t want to have staples in the wrong or different position in each book so we used the saddle stitcher for consistency.
