URBAN POROSITY There are two main entrances or pocket within this meandering urban pathway, one of them which is located in between Van Ness and Hayes Street is dedicated for the School of Art and the other one which is located in between Fell and Franklin Street is dedicated for the Performance Art Theater. Both of them had different characteristics in terms of the landscape to create different atmosphere and both concept are depicted from the surrounding environment.

URBAN LANDSCAPE The first pocket on the school entrance had a hardscape concept inspired by the grid system of city hall civic center area, the second pocket in between the school and the theater had a softscape landscape with some seating area inspired by privately owned public spaces around San Fransisco which is a great place to socialize or gather around, the thrid pocket on the Theater entrance had a combination of hardcape and softscape which are inspired by Hayes Valley neighborhood type of public spaces or gathering area.

FLOORPLAN There are three main program massing as shown on the plan below which contain academic program, media arts program and music departement. There are clear separation in between each departement to create privacy for the academic programs from the sound of music, dance or any other kind of practices from the other department.

02 GOOD FOOD UC BERKELEY - 100 B ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II TOMAS MCKAY STUDIO 10 WEEKS - SPRING 2018

INTEGRATED STRUCTURE The key component of this building is the diagrid scaffolding structure which presents throughout the whole building. This diagrid system becomes a unifyng component of the project which works as the main structure component, shading device system, energy control system and also division of program and circulation within the building. There are two core spaces in the building which is separated by one huge atrium which works as tresshold of light and air within the building where the main circulation is also happened here.

INTERWEAVING PROGRAM These two interweaving core spaces served two different functioned of space, the one on the North side of the building are dedicated for food library, public kitchen, outdoor terraces and many more public oriented spaces. On the other hand, the other core on the South side of the building are mainly dedicated for the Test Farm , research center, outdoor research garden and other private oriented spaces. Moreover. on the back hallway is where all the shared services spaces located.

TEST FARM The main program in this good food building is called test farm where all production of food happened within 24 feet standard A-Frame modules with 6 feet wide and 10 feet long for each module. Each module gets direct access to sunlight with the long dimension facing South. There is a controlled top light through skylight within the diagrid structure which also controlled the temperature and ventilation within the space. Some of the smaller modules are hanged within the structure to create integration within the food plants and the structure. Adjacent to the test farm is the public kitchen where all the plants are being processed through community cooking or any other special food events.
