FORMAL WEAR

When it comes to weddings almost anything goes. Unless there is a particular theme or style, however, the groom will typically wear a suit.

This task is exclusively for the groom. Whether you purchase or rent your tuxedos or suit make sure it complements your bride and bridesmaid fashion. Traditionally the best man, groomsmen and attendants pay for their own formal wear. Their formal wear does not have to be uniform but should compliment the bridal party dress style and colour. We suggest that you rent or purchase the groomsmen and attendants formal wear as a group form the same store so that your styles and look are the same for everyone. Most formal wear rental stores offer package deals for the entire bridal party, saving everyone money. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How soon should we order tuxedos for our wedding? Wedding tuxedos can be reserved at any time; at least 3-4 months prior to the wedding is recommended. Tuxedo styles are selected after the Bride has chosen her dress and the color of the Bridesmaids’ dresses.

Who should wear tuxedos? Traditionally the Groom, Groomsmen, Ushers, Fathers, and Ring Bearer will all be in tuxedos. If you have Grandfathers or other extended family members attending, you might consider having them wear tuxedos as well. This way your photographer will capture some family portraits with everyone looking their very best. What is the final fitting? When is it? A final fitting is recommended so that your groomsmen can try on the actual tuxedo. It usually takes place a day or two before the wedding. Any needed adjustments can be taken care of before the wedding. When do the men have to be measured for their tuxedos? Photo by: Robyn Strong Photography

4

Measurements for the Groomsmen’s tuxedos should be in no later than 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding.

THE engagement RING Prior to Official Engagement Announcement Choosing the Perfect Engagement Ring or Wedding Band for you or your Spouse.

 Whether you want gemstones and what kind

The wedding bands and engagement rings you choose will be one of the most enduring pieces of your wedding day. Not only are they an important element of becoming married, but they are also a long lasting symbol of your love and commitment.

 Whether you would consider a custom creation

Before you head to the jewellers, acquaint yourself with the finer points of diamonds, and most importantly the "4 Cs':  Carat: the overall weight of a diamond  Cut: the shape, cut, or proportions of the stone  Clarity: a measure of the amount and variety of flaws in a diamond  Colour: a measure of the colour of the stone. A "perfect" diamond is colourless INITIAL CONSULTATION WHAT TO BRING/KNOW:  Basic idea of style  Pictures of what you like  Whether you want matching or separate bands  What type of metal you prefer

WHAT TO ASK: What type of ring(s) would be best for my lifestyle? Your occupation should influence this decision. For example, an electrician would want to consider a ceramic band because it does not conduct electricity. People with active lifestyles might want to avoid silver, which is the softest metal. Similarly, those that work extensively with their hands may want to consider getting an additional, inexpensive band solely to wear at work. How should I judge the value of a ring? The best cut reflects the maximum amount of light and gives the stone its brilliance. For diamonds, the less colour a stone has, the higher its value. A stone’s clarity is affected by surface blemishes and interior inclusions, which interfere with light passage and lower its value. Finally, carats, or the measure of a stone’s weight, will influence the stone’s value.

& HONEYMOONS

The picture perfect location for your perfect day.

Travel agents are essential when planning destination weddings. They can arrange the wedding date, time, and transportation details. They will also coordinate the trip for all your guests by getting passports, visas, and other paperwork in order. Your travel agent can help make your wedding an event you will never forget! HONEYMOON The honeymoon is the beginning of your new life as husband and wife. Where you start this new adventure depends on your likes, dislikes, dreams, budget and time constraints. If you want to travel further afield, a professional travel agent is indispensable. Whether you know the exact location of the honeymoon destination or just want to head somewhere warm, travel agents can help make sure the honeymoon plans are a dream vacation come true. These experts can help you decide what the perfect destination may be and handle every little detail so you can relax and enjoy being together! One thing all travel agents stress is making reservations as far in advance as possible, especially if a certain destination is in mind. The best rates and best chances for availability sometimes come months in advance.

Whether a lavish celebration or more intimate affair, we have the spaces, amenities and the planners to seamlessly help make your wedding dreams come true.

For the couple that has everything, consider signing up for a honeymoon registry. Couples can register for things they want while on their honeymoon (candlelit dinner on the beach, wine tastings, massages, transportation, etc.) or they can set a dollar amount. Then, guests can purchase different items, services or excursions for the couple. With the unlimited options available for honeymoon plans, plan to take time for yourselves and enjoy the start of your new life together.

CEREMONIES & RECEPTIONS WHAT TO BRING/KNOW:  Your vision for the ceremony & reception  Number of guests  Tentative wedding date  Ideas and pictures  Decision makers that need to be included in tour WHAT TO ASK: What is the facility’s capacity? It should comfortably accommodate the number of guests you expect to attend. Is there a room available for the bride to use? If you want to get ready at the facility instead of the salon or at home, make sure there is a sizeable, well lit place to do so. Will you schedule more than one wedding for our date? If so, you want to ensure they will give your wedding the proper care and attention it deserves. Can we see a picture of the facility set up for a wedding? It is even better if you can you stop by a wedding in progress to preview the facility in action. Are there restrictions on what we can do to decorate?

Who is in control of the sound system? Find out if your facility has someone to man the sound booth or if you need to provide your own professional. How is accessibility? Check out the parking situation to make sure they have enough for your size event and that it is conveniently available. Also make sure the facility is handicap accessible if necessary. Additional Questions for Outdoor Facilities

Sometimes facilities have restrictions on the use of candles and other decorations. Most commonly there are restrictions on what can be used for the send-off (e.g., rice).

Does the site have any restrictions?

Are you planning on any remodels or renovations before our wedding?

Is there restroom accessibility?

You don’t want to plan for one color scheme and find the carpet and walls are completely different than you expected. What is the rental fee? Find out what is included, how much the deposit is, and when the balance is due. How many hours are included in the rental agreement? Sometimes there are a set number of hours and facilities will charge for each additional hour. Where should the musicians set up?

Each local park has its particular rules and regulations. Make sure to find out well in advance which ones apply to your event. Even if there is accessibility, the restrooms may not be suitable for your affair. Portable restrooms now come equipped with the latest amenities. Units are clean and can come with flushing toilets, sinks, mirrors and lights, providing all the conveniences of an indoor facility outdoors. Is there an alternate option in case of inclement weather? If there are extreme weather conditions you will need to have a back up plan. Do we need power? If you’re setting up lighting, a sound system, or have live music, you may need to set up a generator in order to have access to electricity.

Make sure the space properly accommodates your musicians and that they have access to electricity. Also verify that the dance floor is large enough to accommodate your number of guests.

What rentals will I need?

Is there a wedding coordinator on staff that will be there the entire time?

What will the site look like when we get married?

You will want the person you have been dealing with to be there the whole time to make things run smoothly. 16

www.weddingconnections.ca

Does the facility provide necessities such as chairs, sound system, awnings, tents, restrooms, etc., or will you need to rent your own? The appearance of outdoor sites can change dramatically with the season. Find out what will be blooming, how they manicure the property, and if they have pictures to give you a better idea of what to expect.

Photography Long after your wedding day is over, your photographs will provide lasting memories. With that in mind, you not only need to find a photographer that you feel comfortable with but you also need to know what photo options are available and what shots should not be missed. No other vendor will have as lasting role in your wedding as your wedding photographer. INITIAL CONSULTATION WHAT TO BRING/KNOW: ¨ Tentative timeline of your day ¨ General idea of budget ¨ Style of photography you like ¨ How interactive you want your photographer to be (e.g., actively posing people or unobtrusively documenting) ¨ End products you are interested (album, portraits, book, digital files, etc.)

robynstrongphotography.com

www.weddingconnections.ca

WHAT TO ASK: Who will be my photographer? Make sure the person you meet and work with is the one who will be photographing your special day. Can we look at your sample albums, guest books, online galleries, etc? Look at the entire range of their work, especially for the products you plan on purchasing. Make sure the finalized product matches your style and that the images are sharp, well framed, and well lit. When do I get the digital files? Figure out how long their turnaround typically is, what recourse is available if you do not receive photos within the specified time frame, and whether you will see the photos before or after they have been touched up. Note this, when you hire a photographer, you pay for the creation of the photography, not always the copyrights. How many weddings have you photographed? Talented new photographers join the industry every day, but when it comes to your wedding, you will want some one with enough of a history to be able to see prior work.

WHAT TO BRING/KNOW: ¨ Idea of budget ¨ Wedding date ¨ Wedding location (indoor, outdoor, church, barn, etc.) ¨ Wedding style (formal, casual, vintage, elegant, etc.) ¨ Number of bridesmaids ¨ Idea of colours WHAT TO ASK: Am I buying a custom fit? You are not shopping for just a dress, but a fit as well. Choose a shop that will make sure you look stunning in a perfectly fitted gown. Have you seen brides pulling up their strapless gowns throughout the day? That does not happen when properly fitted by professionals. Who will be doing the finish work and sewing? Find out if the shop does their own alterations or if they hire out the service.

...when every detail counts

Whether bespoke, couture, made-to-measure, or your own garments, our tailors are here to help ensure the best fit possible. As well as exquisite alterations, our tailors can help with restyling and designing. Our professional tailors provide quality alterations for all your suits and gowns. Hand finishing and infinite style options ensure satisfaction for the most discerning individuals.

Does the dress leave the shop? If the gown never leaves the shop, it will stay more pristine. If you or your shop work with an in-home seamstress ask about smoking and pets.

Glamorous and unique wedding gowns that capture the personality of every bride for her special day.

When do they order the dress? Some shops may take the order but wait to put it through until closer to your wedding day. Make sure your gown will be ordered with plenty of time to spare. How will the dress look when picked up? Find out if the gown will be steamed or pressed, whether the shop takes steps to preserve the gown’s shape, and whether the dress bag will be roomy enough to prevent crushing.

If your bridesmaids come in many shapes and wear all different sizes, consider picking the color and fabric for the dresses and allow them to choose their own style. If un-identical dresses is not something you want, consider dresses in an A-line style which is flattering to all body types and sizes. You could also consider having your bridesmaids wear identical wraps.

Fashionable bridal dresses ranging from traditional ball gowns, modern sheath, couture illusion gowns and elegant informal wedding designs.

A MENU FOR YOUR

wedding reception..

What do you remember the most about a wedding? Generally speaking, the answer to that question would be the bridal dress and what we ate. So, you might as well tempt the taste buds of your guests, creating a menu filled with the best of you and your region. 1. Caterer Recommendations - Talk to your caterer. Are there particular dishes that they’re known for, or that they recommend? If you’re catering your own wedding, what recipes are always a crowd-pleaser? Make sure they’re aware of the budget you’ve set. 2. Offer variety - Choose both stationery and passed hors d’oeuvres, as well as both hot and cold ones. 3. Special Touches - Ask your caterer if they can incorporate an old family recipe. Your guests will enjoy this personal touch. 4. Personal Preferences - Make sure you include foods that you love. Enjoying your wedding day is a priority, and it will help to make your menu personal. 5. Heritage Incorporate foods from your families’ heritages. Relatives and guests will bond over shared experiences. If your heritages are distinctly different cultures, consider featuring one during the cocktail hour and another during the meal. 6. Change Things Up - Think about going outside of a traditional menu. For example, some couples these days are opting for a dessert reception, rather than a traditional sit-down menu. 7. Ask to go for a tasting. You’ll have a chance to sample the foods. 8. Be a Considerate Host - Ask your caterer what dietary options are available. Generally today’s couples will want to offer non-red-meat fare, as well as a vegetarian option.

With all the events leading up to your big day; Bridal Shower, Bachelor/Bachelorette Parties, Rehearsal Dinner, Wedding Reception - trust Occasions by Canuel Catering to cater any or all. We Vow to make each one a success for you!

Catering INITIAL CONSULTATION WHAT TO BRING/KNOW: ¨ Wedding date ¨ Venue ¨ Number of guests on your invite list ¨ Timeline of the day ¨ Recipes you want included ¨ Need for special meals (e.g., kids menu, vegan, allergen-free, etc.) WHAT TO ASK: Will you schedule more than one wedding for our date?

Who cleans up the room afterwards? Find out if this is something you, the caterer, or your reception facility is responsible for. How far do you travel?

Most caterers can easily accommodate more than one event, but obtain confirmation your wedding will receive the attention it requires.

Companies work within a certain radius, and charge an extra fee for outside that radius which includes the extra mileage and labor for each staff member.

Do you charge for extra services?

What is included in the price?

Find out if the chairs, tables, linens and glassware are included. Often there is an extra charge for cake cutting and alcohol service.

Catering services often offer a variety of packages with different service options: higher end packages for formal services that include china dishes; environmentally friendly packages for couples wanting biodegradable, disposable dishes; etc.

How many staff will be there? This largely depends on what style of dinner you serve. Do you feed the DJ, photographer, band or do I need to include in count? Typically the bride and groom should include vendors in the overall head count.

Will there be a coffee station or pot of coffee on table? Will there be ice water? Have your caterer walk through every last detail with you.

What are payment terms?

Will the person I’ve been working with be at our wedding?

Who will be my videographer? Larger studios have multiple staff members. Make sure the person you meet and work with is the one who will be filming your special day. Can I see a wedding video in its entirety? Ask to see a complete wedding in a setting similar to yours. Look at examples of the types of products you are interested in. Check videos for clarity, steadiness, and attention to detail. Listen carefully to the quality of various sounds, from soft-spoken vows to the beat of dance music. Unless you contacted the baker based on a recommendation, it's a good idea to check with other couples about their experiences. Do you use fresh, high quality ingredients? Inferior ingredients will adversely affect the taste, so make sure your baker uses nothing but the finest. How large is a serving size? You will need to pass this along to whomever is cutting your cake so you do not run out of cake or have too much leftover. 58

www.weddingconnections.ca

Do they have other rentals available? Some bakers also have candles, towers, fountains and other decorative items available to complete the presentation. Do they deliver? How great a distance? Is there a delivery fee? Do they set it up? Wedding cakes are complex, delicate constructions that require professional handling. Usually bakers include the cost of delivery and setup, but within a limited distance. How much is the deposit? What is the payment schedule? Make sure to have these things written down and included in the contract.

Staying Within Your Budget

The average couple spends somewhere around $25,000 on their weddingeven before factoring in the engagement ring or honeymoon. Whether you're planning an intimate wedding or a more lavish affair, one of your first steps in planning your wedding should be to set up-and stick to a basic budget. Budgeting is easiest if you have clear priorities. When you've decided on your must haves, cutting the costs becomes a snap. Though your families may elect to help you out, they are in no way obligated to do so.

To keep from breaking the bank (after all, who wants to start a marriage tens of thousands of dollars in debt?), make sure you and your partner agree on your priorities before committing to anything. Building in a 5 percent cushion just in case will also save your sanity when the actual costs inevitably come in a little higher than expected.

POPULAR

wedding Parties

In addition to the rehearsal dinner and reception, there are plenty of smaller opportunities to celebrate the nuptials. The parties listed below are the most popular ways for family and friends to help paint the town red in honor of your marriage. Engagement Party Traditionally hosted by the parents soon after the engagement. Occasionally, the parents of the bride and groom will host the party together, but more often separate parties are held. It is a convenient way for parents to introduce their child’s fiancé to family and friends and can also be a good way for the parents of the couple to meet if they have not already done so. Showers Showers are given by any friend or relative who wants to do something special for the couple. Customarily, the immediate family of the bride and groom do not host a shower, because it is seen as asking for gifts. Often, the honor attendant and bridesmaids host a shower. Since the shower is always given by someone other than the bride, registry information may be included with the invitation. Bridesmaids’ Luncheon The maids’ luncheon (or tea) is either given by the bridesmaids as a “farewell” to the bride or hosted by the bride herself. This luncheon may take place in a home or restaurant, wherever the bride and her ladies can take time to get together. The bride often gives her ladies their wedding mementos at this time, schedules final dress fittings, and just enjoys their company.

notes 64

www.weddingconnections.ca

Bachelor/ette Party These very casual gatherings emphasize having fun, unwinding and celebrating the wedding. Bachelor/ette parties often incorporate a theme and can include attending a sporting event, going to a comedy club or having a shopping. Some enjoy activities such as laser tag, paintball, gambling, golfing, bowling or even camping.
