Festive FOR EVERY dress code

style

The party season is in full swing and our main concern should be enjoying the company of loved ones and friends not…"what should I wear" or worse still “I have a full wardrobe and nothing to wear”!

From BBQs to dinner parties the festive season can have many people’s social calendars filling with events that can require diverse dress codes.

As a stylist I have heard way too often of client’s stressing over a dress code, or worse still, declining an invitation because they don’t feel confident in what to wear or they are unable to spend money on an outfit for a one–off event.

Below is a list of wardrobe items and some styling suggestions for various occasions. You may already have these pieces in your closet or you may wish to invest in them if you feel they could add value to your outfit choices.

that fits with your lifestyle can mean you always have the right outfit for any occasion, you just may need to be a little creative in how you style them.

TheGuys

T–shirt or polo shirt: Worn on their own with shorts or pants for a casual look (think bbq) or worn under a shirt or blazer for an elevated outfit that could be appropriate for a casual wedding or birthday dinner. This season the knit polo is a popular choice for the guys who like to keep their style updated and modern.

The outfits my gorgeous hubby, Michael and myself are wearing on the cover and in this article are items we already had in our wardrobes. Therefore, when we were invited to be on the Christmas cover of this lovely magazine we didn’t need to purchase anything new. In fact, these outfits have seen many a formal event and Michael’s suit jacket has seen even more occasions. So as you can see, a functional wardrobe

Linen button up shirt: Fabulous for sun protection for beach days (very Euro chic!) or for a dressier occasion team with a neutral chino pant.

Dress short: For the guys who don’t like wearing long pants a dress short with a button thru shirt and a loafer or lace–up sneaker is super stylish for just about any summer coastal outing.

Chino pant: This style pant will elevate any outfit when jeans are just a tad too casual.

Dress jean: (Dark blue or black can be dressed up or down easily). A must–have wardrobe item as they are multifunctional when a slightly dressier look is required but a suit pant is just too formal. Michael is wearing a “wet look” jean in the photos with a formal suit jacket to give his outfit a modern edge.

Casual blazer: If your lifestyle sees you at daytime weddings, race days and events that require another layer and not just a shirt, then a blazer in a colour that works with your skin tone and other wardrobe pieces is a fabulous investment.

Dinner jacket: (Best if purchased as a suit so you have the option to wear as a

set or mix with other pieces). Don’t just think of a more formal suit just for black tie events, a timeless suit jacket can take you from a formal invitation, to a funeral or a dinner out.

Black tie or bow tie: If your lifestyle includes the occasional formal event then this accessory is a great investment and can be worn with a plain white shirt for a formal invite or with a pattern or quirky print shirt for a more relaxed or fun event.

Belt: The finishing touches can make or break an outfit so don’t forget to keep your belt in good condition and updated. Opting for a reversible belt (different colours on each side. For example black and brown), will allow you to create different looks without having to purchase multiple belts.

TheGirls

LBD (Little black, or your best neutral dress): Opt for a timeless design in black, navy or a dark hue that can be accessorised for after five, elevated with a jacket for business or even worn to a funeral.

Lace, satin or luxe fabric dress or suit: Like my red dress featured in this article, a formal dress or suit can take you to many occasions and if floor length is too limiting opt for an ankle length style or

after a few wears as a formal gown you can always cut your dress off at the calf for more informal occasions.

Denim jeans/skirt: The optimum wardrobe item as it can be worn casually with a tee or dressed up with a blazer for a lunch date or city stay. Be sure to try the new denim maxi skirt that is trending at the moment, it is perfect for those who prefer a longer skirt.

Linen pant/maxi skirt: A fabulous alternative to denim or a dress pant/skirt for most summer coastal events. Dress up your linen with other luxe textures like silk, sheer fabrics or even more linen for cool and effortless style.

Sequin or metallic cami/top: Adding a touch of sparkle and translucency to any outfit will instantly feel luxe and festive so elevate your denim, linen or after–five silky pants and skirts with a top that demands attention.

Kitten heel or pointy toe shoe: This summer a step back in time (no pun intended) is what shoe lovers are enjoying with the return of lady–like footwear. Gorgeous with dresses for a nostalgic styling or for a modern twist team feminine footwear with jeans or this season’s cropped pant. Anything sparkly on the feet is always a good

wardrobe investment for when you need some added glam in your life.

Dramatic accessories: The 3D flower worn around the neck or as a brooch, embellished necklaces, neck ties or for those who love a belt…go big and statement or delicate with a chain version. Handbags are also a fabulous way to change the style of an outfit. A beaded clutch styled back with a sundress, cape or wrap and an embellished sandal will be appropriate for most semi–formal invitations.

Peeling back the

fun

Byron Bay was great BC (“Before Crystals”), but when you’re over 55 and prefer to arrive before wine–o–clock, it’s a bit too far to drive in half a day. So to experience the tropical north, look no further than Coffs Harbour, a town famous for its roadside signs selling bananas, baubles and beads.

Our accommodation in Coffs is the NRMA Darlington Beach Holiday Resort, nestled right on the beach, offering a serene break for relaxation and exploration. “Darlo” is about 25 minutes north of Coffs, but you’re rewarded with a tropical paradise away from the city centre and its strip of tired 1960s style motels.

On arrival, a madrigal of birds serenades us as we stroll along the NRMA Darlington Beach Holiday Resort grounds to our stylish villa, creating an instant embrace with nature. The villa is so spacious you could bring the grandkids, their parents, and maybe even a small circus along if necessary.

We’re impressed by the villa’s hip, muted art gallery–style lighting throughout. It’s like living inside an Instagram filter. The view of the grove of palms adds an instant tropical flavour to our northern sojourn, almost as if someone had hit the ‘tropical’ button on life’s remote control. The villa has everything from a dishwasher to a stove, so you can save some coin by cooking in your accommodation – a recurring theme in this column.

Having brekkie on the enclosed deck, we encounter kangaroos up close – a mum and joey – nonchalantly grazing

as if they’re on the payroll for our entertainment. This is one of the resort’s many features. We also meet the resident kookaburra, as tame as a budgie.

The resort caters to both the energetic and the laid–back. For the grandkids, there’s a waterpark to ensure they’re thoroughly soaked and exhausted by day’s end. For seniors, more sophisticated pastimes await – a tidy nine–hole golf course, a professionally maintained bowling green, and a bubbling spa to ease the kinks of travelling. And let’s not forget the $12 cocktails at the resort’s restaurant, which quickly become a favourite evening ritual.

On our first evening, we take a culinary gamble at the NRMA Holiday Park restaurant and are handsomely rewarded. We indulge in delicious steaks, proving that gourmet treasures can indeed be found in a holiday park setting.

The next morning, after a rockmelon–sized bacon and egg roll at the restaurant, we set off on a nostalgic mission. Readers may recall I wrote about Gowings Department Store some issues back. Remember it? It was on the corner of Market and George Streets in Sydney. I used to buy my clothes there

and even get a haircut! Indeed, Gowings’ notoriety in the 20th century gave birth to the saying “Gone to Gowings,” which entered the Australian lexicon to describe various states of decline or confusion – from financial ruin to drunkenness. Another notable slogan that adorned the flagship store’s facade was “Walk Thru, No One Asked to Buy.” Carn, you must remember that, right?

Well, a little birdie told us they still exist in Coffs Harbour. However, we’re disappointed to find it’s little more than a surf shop, dude. But across the road, we find another sentimental favourite: Alvey. In 2022, Alvey Reels was acquired by Gowings –now an Australian investment company, albeit no longer offering a short back and sides. The acquisition saved Alvey from being ‘cast off’.

After Alvey, we reel off to Mutton Bird Island, just beyond the jetty at Coffs. From June to November, it’s

Mutton Bird Island
The icon 'Big Banana'

the perfect spot to catch whales in action. Joining a guide from National Parks for a free Whale Watching Tour, we stand on the island’s lookout, treated to a front–row seat as majestic humpback whales breach and spout during their annual migration. Nature’s ballet unfolds before us, with the sea breeze on our faces, making Mutton Bird Island a road trip highlight and connecting us with the wonders of the ocean. Less mobile seniors might find the schlep up the island’s hump to the whale–watching side mildly taxing, but sprightly seniors will be fine.

their exclamations of wonder echoing through the space. Caught up in the excitement, I can’t help but join their chorus of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’, until my wife pins me with a look reminiscent of a butterfly carefully preserved in a collector’s book.

As we leave Coffs Harbour, I can’t help but feel a deep appreciation for the eclectic experiences and whimsical charm of this tropical corner of NSW

We then make our way to the enchanting Butterfly House in Bonville. Stepping through its sealed doors, we find ourselves transported to a mesmerising realm filled with fluttering wings and vivid hues. The custom–designed tropical habitat, perfectly suited to the Coffs region, provides an ideal sanctuary for a wide array of exotic butterflies. Watching these delicate creatures flit around their glasshouse home inspires awe and delight among the children present,

Lastly, a visit to Coffs Harbour wouldn’t be complete without a pilgrimage to the iconic Big Banana. Erected in 1964, this gigantic yellow fruit has been a proud landmark on the Pacific Highway, drawing tourists to savour chocolate–dipped bananas (a personal favourite) and snap obligatory selfies with its enormous fibreglass facade. The brainchild of visionary John Landi, this striking yellow curve was designed to lure passing motorists to purchase his bananas. Inspired by Hawaii’s “Big Pineapple,” it earned the distinction of becoming Australia’s first “Big Thing.” Today, it’s transformed into a banana–themed Disneyland of sorts, offering a waterpark, mini–golf, laser tag for the grandkids, and even an ice–skating rink (because nothing says tropical paradise like ice–skating, right?). A day pass at fifty–nine bucks ensures endless entertainment for the grandkids.

As we leave Coffs Harbour, I can’t help but feel a deep appreciation for the eclectic experiences and whimsical charm of this tropical corner of NSW. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a thrill–seeker, or simply in search of a good cocktail at the NRMA Holiday Park, Coffs Harbour offers a slice of paradise with a twist of Big Things.

HEALTH CARE,YourWay

Nine local emergency physicians have recognised a fundamental gap in health care available on the Central Coast and have banded together to establish EUC Specialist Emergency and Urgent Care in Tuggerah.

From accidents to illness, there are times when you may need urgent medical attention and can’t wait. A brand–new emergency care practice, EUC Specialist and Emergency Care, is a new option that is now available on the Coast for urgent medical situations.

We all know there is a high demand

for healthcare on the Coast and as a result, many of the available services often find themselves overwhelmed with limited availability.

The EUC team, who live and work on the Coast, realised the need for a service that could bridge the gap

The doctors at EUC Specialist Emergency and Urgent Care have a clear mission, to provide rapid, specialist health care to the community, when it is needed most

between GPs and the hospital emergency department. “We want to provide people with an alternative to going to hospital – lots of emergency care can be provided in the community in a timely way when there is an appropriate facility like this with emergency physicians leading an experienced multidisciplinary team,” said Dr Ingram, Medical Director and Specialist Emergency Physician.

The doctors at EUC Specialist Emergency and Urgent Care have

The team at EUC are fully qualified and experienced to assess and treat fractures, from initial emergency care, X–rays and applying slings and casts, to follow–up care and cast removal

a clear mission, to provide rapid, specialist health care to the community, when it is needed most. At EUC, there’s no need to book an appointment, it’s a walk–in service that you can access seven days a week, 365 days of the year, with the aim to provide a novel, streamlined way of accessing emergency care on the Central Coast.

EUC is not meant as a replacement for hospital emergency rooms or GP services – and always call triple zero or go to the hospital emergency room in a life–threatening emergency – however, in a situation where immediate attention for a non–life–threatening ailment is required, EUC will fill that gap and provide prompt, accurate, specialist health care.

As our bodies age, physical changes and health conditions can increase the risk of slips and falls. As much as prevention is key, when falls do happen, they can be painful and result in breaks or fractures. The team at EUC are fully qualified and experienced to assess and treat fractures, from initial emergency care, X–rays and applying slings and casts, to follow–up care and cast removal. If falls do occur, and immediate treatment is required, EUC can provide prompt relief, and have you back to the comfort of your own home sooner.

As well as accidents, ailments, such as fevers, coughs and aches and pains, can come on suddenly and often happen at the worst possible times. If you’re all set to walk your child down the aisle, the last thing you need is a painful flare–up of gout or knee pain. A visit to the EUC can result in being treated in a timely manner so you can be back on your way to celebrating the big day.

The above scenarios are common, but the scope of treatments at the EUC is far broader. Along with the team of emergency doctors, the practice includes an onsite physiotherapist, nurses, radiographers, and pathology team.

SERVICES

EUC offers a broad range of services and treatments, including:

Dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhoea

Fractures, sprains and strains

Asthma / breathing problems

Joint pain

Eye injury and troubles

Urinary symptoms

Migraine

Ear, nose, and throat problems

Fever

Broken bones

Dislocations

Flu / cold symptoms

Wounds

Complex lacerations

OPEN TO WALK–IN PATIENTS

MONDAY – SUNDAY 10AM – 8PM NO

FEES

A Facility (Gap) fee of $284 applies at EUC but includes the value in on site X–rays, blood and pathology collection, as well as prioritised access to CT, ultrasound, and MRI.

It also includes any procedures that may need to be carried out on site as well as the peace of mind of being seen by a specialist without the wait!

WILL I PAY MORE FOR AGED CARE?

On 12th September, the Australian Government introduced the Aged Care Bill 2024, outlining the most significant reforms in 30 years. Most people think of “aged care” as nursing home care, but the majority of these services are delivered in people’s homes. The reforms will impact both home and residential care. While some fees may increase, aged care will remain heavily subsidised, with costs based on your financial situation to maintain affordability.

If you or a loved one may require care in the near future, it’s advisable to seek guidance to assess whether transitioning before the changes take effect could result in cost savings. Here’s a brief overview of the proposed changes:

RESIDENTIAL CARE CHANGES (FROM 1 JANUARY 2025)

Rising room prices: The market cap for Refundable Accommodation Deposits

(RADs) will increase from $550,000 to $750,000.

Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) Retention: Currently, if you pay a RAD as a lump sum, it is fully refundable. However, from 1 July 2025, providers will retain 2% per year, up to a cap of 10% of the RAD.

Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP): If you choose to pay via daily fees instead of a lump sum, the DAP, which is currently fixed, will be indexed twice yearly at CPI from 1 July 2025. This may impact cash flow as rates increase.

Basic daily fee: This will remain set at 85% of the age pension to cover clinical care from 1 July 2025. A new hotelling supplement, up to $12.55 per day, will help cover daily costs like food, laundry, and utilities. Providers may charge extra for premium services, so it’s essential to understand what’s included and compare costs before choosing a provider.

Increased care contributions: Depending on your finances, you may need to contribute more toward care services, such as entertainment, bathing, and mobility assistance. While the government will continue covering most care costs, your contribution could increase by $10 per day. The lifetime cap will rise from $80,000 to $130,000, or four years in care, whichever occurs first.

Home assessment: No changes are planned regarding how your home is assessed for financial contribution. If a spouse or “protected person” resides in the home, it remains exempt. Otherwise, approximately $208,000 of its value

(indexed) will be included in financial assessments.

HOME CARE CHANGES

Support at Home program: This new program will merge existing home care options into 10 levels of care packages, better addressing individual needs.

Higher contribution fees: While clinical care will be fully covered up to the package limit, you may need to contribute more for services, such as cleaning and gardening.

Means–testing: Home care contributions will now be means–tested, factoring in both assets and income under Centrelink guidelines. Currently, only income is considered.

IMPACT OF CHANGES

Higher costs will primarily affect self–funded retirees and some part–pensioners, but everyone could see increased expenses. This makes it essential to carefully choose care providers and fully understand accommodation costs. While these changes aim to simplify the system, it’s more important than ever to seek professional advice to understand how fees may evolve with your financial situation.

Planning ahead is crucial, and some decisions can feel overwhelming.

READY TO TRY CONTACT LENSES?

Read on to find out how contact lenses could benefit your lifestyle

Contact lenses offer an excellent alternative to glasses for various activities like sports, work, and social events. They come in convenient disposable options, eliminating the need for cleaning and enhancing safety.

Many people may not realize that contact lenses are a safe choice for adults, seniors, and children, especially with the advancements in technology. We suggest our patients opt for daily disposable lenses, which provide a safer experience compared to reusable monthly or bi–weekly options.

If you’ve previously been advised that contact lenses weren’t suitable for your eyes, that may no longer be the case! At Adrenaline Optometry, we have a wide range of contact lenses available and can help you find the perfect fit for your lifestyle.

Here are some situations where contact lenses can be particularly useful:

ƒ alternate to wearing glasses

ƒ for children with myopia

ƒ during weekends

ƒ while running or playing team sports

ƒ when reading menus at restaurants

ƒ in the healthcare or construction fields under safety goggles

ƒ while traveling

There are a range of contact lenses including dailies, fortnightly and weekends. All types of contact lenses have their advantages and disadvantages.

For example, daily disposable contact lenses are designed to be worn for a single day and then discarded. This unique feature provides several advantages that make them a popular choice among contact lens wearers. Other benefits include convenience where you can open a new pair each morning, wear them throughout the day, and dispose of them at night. It also reduces risk of eye infections, and allows comfortable wear up to 16 hours a day.

When considering the negatives of daily and monthly contact lenses, it’s essential to evaluate the specific drawbacks associated with each type. Daily contact lenses have a higher long–term cost and can become more expensive over time due to the need for replacements. Other potential negatives can include the environmental impact, limited prescription options and risks of tearing.

Fortnightly and monthly contact lenses require regular cleaning and disinfecting to prevent the buildup of bacteria and debris. This maintenance can be time–consuming and inconvenient for users who prefer a hassle–free option. The customer will also need to purchase a cleaning

solution kit and ensure that effective cleaning procedures are followed. Monthly lenses are worn for extended periods, so there is an increased risk of eye infections if proper hygiene practices are not followed diligently. Accumulation of proteins and allergens on the lens surface can lead to irritation and potential complications. Some people also compromise on comfort as monthly contacts tend to be thicker than daily ones, which some users may find less comfortable over long periods of wear. The thickness can also make them more noticeable in the eye.

In summary, both daily and monthly contact lenses come with their own sets of advantages and disadvantages that should be carefully considered based on individual lifestyle preferences and eye care needs.

At Adrenaline Optometry, we have our top 4 contact lens sellers. They include:

ƒ Alcon Dailies Total 1

ƒ Acuvue Oasys 1 Day with Hydraluxe

ƒ Bausch + Lomb Ultra ONE Day

ƒ Alcon Total 30 (monthly)

Matters of

life & love

Older Sex: It could be the best you’ve ever had! What better generation to be having fun between the sheets than the original generation of the sexual revolution. The boomer generation is looking younger, feeling younger and acting younger than any generation before them, so read on for inspiration to getting your ‘sexy' on.

Even though I may have not yet joined the ranks of my 55+ readership, I am with you folks, my husband is a baby boomer! And, my single girlfriends have hit a new milestone moment.... drumroll...dating men in their 60s!

So! I know some things. I know things can be pretty hot and steamy out there! Sex isn’t like a carton of milk that goes sour after a certain date. In fact, sex is more like fine wine – it improves with age.

In fact, a popular, global online dating site did a (USA–based) national survey of sexuality and health among older adults and it showed that most people want and need sex well past 60, and continue to have it often – even well into their 80s.

You can be sexual as long as you want to be. It has nothing to do with age and everything to do with your relationship and the person you are with. Pleasure and intimacy need not change as the years go on.

What may change might be expectations about bodies and sexual expression. As your body slows down, sex can soften and change into more of a slow burn, but it can still be just as hot.

It’s not about how often you have sex and it’s not about how many positions you can be in. It’s really about sexual pleasure and the relationship and connection you have with your partner.

In fact, with age comes experience. A mature lover knows what pleasure feels like, or at least has a sense of what it should feel like. A mature lover is often less self–conscious and accepting about theirs and your body. And a mature lover is more confident in asking for what they want and what you want too.

When you’re less concerned about your sex stats and stamina and more focused on good communication, you’ll have just as much pleasure and passion as you did when you were young. It may just look different than it used to.

Don’t give up on great sex! Desire never has to die. It may be that you need to give up what you think you know, and open yourself up to having some playful fun again.

Here are five simple ways to spice up your sex life after age 50.

ƒ Make time and take your time: plan for sex. Build up the excitement and anticipation.

ƒ Stay fit and healthy. Your body is the

temple for your devotionals. Keep moving. Feed and nourish it well.

ƒ Don’t be afraid of lube. There are many good products.

ƒ Be creative and adventurous. Try a shower together. Massage? Toys?

Sex isn’t like

a carton of milk that goes sour after a certain date. In fact, sex is more like fine wine – it improves with age

ƒ And remember, our most erotic organ is our brain. Explore what is each others ‘erotic story’ and create a new story book of love, an erotic language, together.

And most important – for sex at any age and with any partner – be it with your life–long lover or a new romance, please, practice safe sex, ensure consent and be mindfully present.

FEELING BLOATED? START WITH THE SIMPLE THINGS

Bloating is a common digestive complaint and often making simple changes can make a significant difference. Although there can be more rare and serious causes of bloating that may need further investigation, it’s worth trying these simple things first and observing changes.

Whether the bloating is felt more in the upper abdomen or lower abdomen can shed some light as to what may be going on. Also, the timing of feeling bloated can provide added information. For example, if bloating is felt more in the upper stomach area it may be a sign of stomach acid and/or digestive enzyme insufficiency and perhaps protein isn’t being broken down in the stomach as effectively as it should be.

Things that may help include: slowing down and chewing food mindfully, relaxing/deep breathing before eating and not eating if feeling stressed or anxious (stimulating the rest/digest nervous system rather than the fight/ flight nervous system), drinking lemon juice or apple cider vinegar in water or swedish bitters before meals. All these things can help stimulate saliva production and this in turn stimulates the body’s production of stomach acid then in turn, digestive enzymes further down the gastrointestinal tract, preparing it better for the assimilation of food. In more severe cases, taking digestive enzymes before meals may also assist in breaking down food more effectively and reducing upper digestive tract bloating.

Bloating that occurs in the lower abdomen could be more indicative of intestinal issues such as dysbiosis (unbalanced gut flora/microbiome) although can still be related to under functioning of digestion further upstream in the stomach and duodenum (small pouch that joins the stomach

and small intestine). If food is not effectively broken down into smaller particles in the upper digestive tract by good hydrochloric acid and enzyme function, it can pass through the lower digestive tract in larger than ideal particles which may irritate the gut wall, lead to increased fermentation and gas production that can result in bloating. If there is under functioning stomach acid production, protein may not be broken down adequately, including bacteria which could then contribute to gas formation and bloating further downstream.

Observing the timing of bloating can also be helpful. Bloating and feeling tired within 30 minutes of eating a meal may be a sign of digestive enzyme insufficiency, too large portions or the consumption of food that is not ideal for the individual and sensitivities may be present. If there is a pattern of bloating with a particular food, it is worth eliminating that food for two weeks and observing any changes experienced. The most common culprits for bloating due to sensitivity include wheat–based food (anything containing flour such as bread, pasta, cakes, biscuits, pastry etc) or dairy foods (anything containing cow’s milk including yoghurt, cheese, cream, ice–cream etc).

Specific food related bloating in some people can also be caused by high ‘FODMAP’ (Fermentable, Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols, which are groups of short–chain carbohydrates

and sugar alcohols which exist in larger amounts in some foods) including some fruit (apples/dried fruit) and vegetables (onion/garlic), legumes (lentils/chick peas) as these particular carbohydrates may not be well absorbed and can affect bacteria in the intestine resulting in gas and bloating.

Slower moving bowels may also contribute to bloating as food/faeces are stagnant in the gut for too long resulting in fermentation and further gas producing bacteria.

Swallowing air by eating too fast or not chewing sufficiently can lead to bloating often associated with burping and noisy flatulence. The more odorous or ‘silent and deadly’ flatulence may be more associated with fermentation of food further down the gastrointestinal tract due to maldigestion of food or an imbalance of healthy gut flora.

If bloating doesn’t improve after making adjustments to how and what you eat or it’s associated with a change in bowel habits, including blood or mucous in the stools or severe pain then it may warrant further investigation sooner rather than later.

SENIORS SOCIAL & FRIENDSHIP CLUB INC

In 1995, our founding members decided to place an ad in the local paper asking if anyone would be interested in forming a social club for Over 55s – twelve people attended that first meeting.

From then, our club grew substantially and at one stage exceeded 100 members. Today, our not–for–profit organisation currently has 37 members and we would love to see that number grow.

We conduct varied outings, using our Gold Opal cards, to keep transport costs down. If you are apprehensive about venturing out solo, the benefit of our club is that we run group activities, so you know you’ll have support and friendship – we adventure together! We look out for one another as friends do. We also hold lunches at local clubs and pubs, as well as monthly birthday gatherings and guest speakers. If this sounds like a group you’d like to get involved with, we would love to have you along!

We hold monthly meetings at Gosford RSL every second Monday of the month at 10am in the Gallery 2 room. For more information, contact Peter Burton 0418 665 655

STORIES TO INSPIRE Q&A WITH DR JOHN IRVINE, AUTHOR OF "80 STORIES HIGH"

Leading Child Psychologist Dr John Irvine has spent decades working with children and families. Over his celebrated career he has worked as an academic, written books, and founded the READ clinic, dedicated to providing psychological services on the Central Coast. To coincide with his 80th birthday, Dr John has written 80 Stories High, a compilation of true stories about the humble heroes he has met, and been inspired by, over the years. Dr John recently took time out to speak to On the Coast Over 55 Magazine.

When did the idea for 80 Stories High take hold? What was your inspiration? When we become “seniors” we face our own D–Day crises. In my case, it was increasing Deafness and Dichotomous thinking – I could focus on this or that but not on both simultaneously. That problem annoys my wife, Jean, even more than me. But other D–Day crises also loom large within our bodies – it either Drips, it Droops, it Drops or it Dribbles. In my case, all this led to the biggest D of them all, Depression. Then to top it off, my closest brother, Warwick, my business partner in the READ clinic for over 35 years developed Dementia. I was devastated and this scenario, coupled with Covid, meant I had to

fight back, somehow. For some reason memories of humble heroes I’d met in my professional years as a child psychologist started flooding back – memories of kids, parents, teachers, grandparents who had overcome adversity with incredible love, forgiveness, endurance, humour and faith just filled my mind. By thinking about them and writing about them I was able to shift my focus from dark to light, from death to life, and my spirits lifted.

You have a podcast too. Did the podcast come first? What inspired the podcast and what have you learnt and enjoyed from doing it?

The podcast was done a touch earlier

when I was in the midst of my battle. I didn’t advertise it, I had no confidence in

By thinking about them and writing about them I was able to shift my focus from dark to light, from death to life, and my spirits lifted

them because I knew that my audience was not big on podcasts, they were old fashioned readers! And although I still

have them on air, I think I must have had all of about 20 listeners by now (!!), and I retain the capacity in the podcasts for people to write in about their humble heroes too, and some have, and some of these are included among the 80 fabulous stories in the book.

You have spoken to tens and tens of humble heroes. From all the inspiration that you’ve gleaned, could you offer some insights for overcoming adversity or staying positive?

Having taken the book and the stories to many retirement villages, Probus clubs and Rotary clubs, I have come up with a few fundamentals:

ƒ We oldies retain a distinct advantage over the younger generation; we were brought up in an age where we learned how to talk and help each other, not just communicate through a machine. As our brains inevitably decrease in learning capacity with age (in the book I refer to it as advancing black matter), we build on our remaining strengths and use each other to help us with our weaknesses. What’s beautiful about village life, Probus and Rotary is to see how they collaborate as a team to use individual strengths (gardening, IT, travel gurus, fishing, bowls, mahjong, cars, cards, Bridge, craft and sewing, construction, electrical, electronics, model rail, journalism, event management) just to name a few, to bolster the group collectively and to help each other. What a marvellous lesson is that! We don’t have to become increasingly frustrated with our weaknesses, there are others around with the strengths to help.

ƒ Anyone and everyone working with seniors should have to pass a Working with Seniors certificate, just as we all have to do if we work with children!

Some of the skills needed include:

i) a genuine respect for the elderly

ii) compassion for failing eyesight, hearing, memory and communication skills

iii) capacity to speak clearly (it’s very difficult on the hard–of–hearing to understand someone whose accent makes it impossible to interpret) iv) a willingness and tolerance to help find a solution rather than be impatient and dismissive

ƒ Because we will all have to accept help from others as we age, we should all try to develop and practice an attitude of gratitude so that when outsiders do help they pick up on our gratitude and so they’re more inclined to enjoy helping.

The proceeds from the book go towards dementia research, can you tell us a bit about that? What inspired this? Was that always your vision?

Dementia is the biggest single killer of the elderly. As we age our brain’s neuroplasticity reduces, we can’t learn as quickly, and memory can become a problem. I wrote my stories of beautiful humble heroes I had met in my life, not just to lift my own spirits but I was conscious that memories might fade, and I would have lost the opportunity to say thank you. Then our own family struck tragedy. My own brother, the beautiful human being who had worked side–by–side with me to establish the READ clinic and who was my business partner for 35 years, was diagnosed with dementia. I could do little to help. I was fraught with guilt and grief. Then I thought that if I can give all profits from the book to dementia research, even if it might be too late to help Warwick, it could help his/our children and grandchildren. So far, we have been able to give $1500 to NeuRa, the dementia research facility

attached to UNSW, and the good news is that there are more donations looming. The other exciting news for all of us is that my research indicates that huge strides are being

Dementia is the biggest single killer of the elderly. As we age our brain’s neuroplasticity reduces, we can’t learn as quickly, and memory can become a problem

made in prevention, diagnosis and treatment right now! Indeed, an article titled “Overcoming Dementia” in a recent New Scientist magazine, predicts that by as early as 2030 there might even be a vaccine available to prevent the onset and maybe even arrest early symptoms. How good would that be?! I can’t believe how much these “green shoots” in research have already changed public thinking. Up till now, very few wanted to be tested as it was like early notice of a death sentence. Now, with hope on the horizon, people are both donating more to the cause and they’re wanting to know more.

Are there any upcoming events and fundraisers that you would like us to know about?

We had such a huge response to our Music and the Mind concert held at Grammar this year, that we’ve already been asked to offer an expanded version, featuring CCGS music groups and individuals, interspersed with speakers about the Mind and Dementia, to be held on 26th August 2025. Stay tuned for more information.

If you would like to gift 80 Stories High to your own humble hero this Christmas, they are available at Bookface Erina, the READ clinic in Karalta Rd, Erina, or online from Amazon.

Estate Planning Conversations: balancing openness and independence

The summer break is a wonderful time for families to come together, making it an ideal moment to discuss important matters, such as estate planning. However, it’s crucial to strike the right balance between being open and protecting your independence. Estate planning is sensitive, and while open discussions with family can help clarify your wishes, they can also expose you to risks like financial or elder abuse if not handled properly.

WHY DISCUSS ESTATE PLANNING?

With school holidays approaching, families quite often gather, providing a perfect opportunity to discuss your estate plan, especially if family members will play a role in managing your affairs. This can include explaining your Will, Powers of Attorney, or who you’ve appointed as an enduring guardian.

These conversations can prevent

misunderstandings later on and provide clarity about your wishes. However, they also need to be handled carefully. Sharing too much financial or personal information can leave you vulnerable to undue influence or even abuse, especially if there are family dynamics that could complicate the situation.

THE RISK OF FINANCIAL ABUSE

Unfortunately, elder abuse, particularly financial abuse, is a real risk in some family situations. This can take many forms, including pressure to change your Will or manipulation to make decisions that benefit someone else. In worst–case scenarios, openly sharing details about your estate plan can give someone the opportunity to exert control over your finances or decisions, leaving you with less independence.

PROTECTING YOUR INDEPENDENCE: FOR SOME, LESS CAN BE MORE

While transparency can help avoid

future disputes, sometimes it’s safer to keep certain details private. What works for one family may not work for another, and if you have concerns about your independence or about being pressured, it’s perfectly fine to limit what you share.

Having an open conversation can help ensure that your family understands your choices and that there is less confusion or misunderstanding after you’re gone

You don’t need to reveal all the details of your financial arrangements or decisions about your estate during

family gatherings. Your independence and decision–making power are paramount, and by seeking legal advice first, you can make informed decisions about what is necessary to share and what should remain private.

WHEN OPEN CONVERSATIONS ARE CRITICAL

On the other hand, in some family circumstances, not discussing your estate planning can lead to significant issues. For example, blended families, estranged relationships, or complex financial situations may benefit from clear communication. By explaining your decisions, such as why one child may receive a larger inheritance or why you’ve appointed a particular person to manage your affairs, you can reduce the potential for future conflict.

Having an open conversation can help ensure that your family understands your choices and that there is less confusion or misunderstanding after you’re gone. However, these conversations should be approached with care, especially if they have the potential to stir up emotional or financial tension.

SEEK LEGAL ADVICE FIRST

Before discussing your estate planning with your family, it’s essential to seek legal advice. Every family situation is unique, and a lawyer can provide tailored guidance on what’s safe to discuss and what should be kept private. They can help you navigate complex decisions about your Will, Power of Attorney, and enduring guardian, ensuring that your interests are protected.

A lawyer can also help you prepare for the emotional dynamics that might arise in these discussions. They’ll advise on how best to communicate your decisions and what safeguards you can put in place to protect yourself from pressure or undue influence.

CONCLUSION: PREPARING FOR CONVERSATIONS

The summer break is a great time to have estate planning discussions, but it’s important to balance openness with protecting your independence. While some families benefit from open conversations, others may need to approach these topics more cautiously.

The key is preparation. Get legal advice so that you understand what’s

safe to share and what should remain private. By doing so, you’ll be able to engage in meaningful conversations without risking your financial security or independence.

This holiday period, if it’s the right time and safe to do so, consider discussing your estate plan with your family. But always ensure that your decisions are made in your best interest, with the support of legal advice tailored to your circumstances.

Finding the right fit

HOW BREAST CARE BRA FITTINGS SUPPORT WO MEN’S WELLBEING

BY SHELL BARKER, OWNER OF SHELL LINGERIE, BESPOKE BRA FITTING SERVICE

FINDING COMFORT AND CONFIDENCE: THE BENEFITS OF A BREAST CARE BRA FITTING

Going through breast health challenges like surgery, cancer treatment, or recovery can be overwhelming. It’s a journey that impacts not just your physical health but also how you feel about yourself every day. While so much focus is (rightfully) on medical treatment, there’s another aspect of care that often gets overlooked – finding a bra that fits and feels good.

This might seem small, but when your body is changing, finding comfort in everyday things, like a well–fitting bra, can make a world of difference. A breast care bra fitting is designed to offer that comfort, helping women rediscover a sense of confidence and ease during a time when everything feels uncertain.

WHY A BRA FITTING MATTERS

1. Comfort for your new normal After procedures like a mastectomy or reconstruction, your body might feel and look different. These changes can make your usual bras feel uncomfortable, or they may no longer fit at all. A professional bra fitting focuses on finding a bra that feels gentle and

supportive, ensuring there’s no extra pressure on sensitive areas as you heal.

2. Guidance you can trust Knowing what bra to choose after surgery can be confusing. Should it have pockets for breast forms? Is underwire okay? Can it be worn all day? A specialist is there to guide you through these questions, helping you pick out bras that work best for your needs –whether it’s extra support, post–surgery pockets, or just something soft and comforting.

A professional bra fitting focuses on finding a bra that feels gentle and supportive, ensuring there’s no extra pressure on sensitive areas as you heal

3. Finding confidence again

It’s not just about the bra; it’s about how the right fit can make you feel. The right bra can uplift (literally and figuratively) your spirits, enhancing your silhouette and helping you feel more like yourself. It’s about reclaiming a bit of confidence, even when things are tough.

4. Adapting as you change Our bodies go through many changes, and breast health issues are just one part of that journey. Whether it’s weight changes, hormonal shifts, or surgery recovery, your bra needs will evolve. A bespoke bra fitting is about adjusting and finding solutions that work for your unique situation, whenever you need them.

WHAT

YOU SHOULD EXPECT FROM A FITTING

A space just for you

During a fitting, should have one–on–one time with a specialist who’s there to listen and understand your needs. It’s a chance to feel heard and to find solutions that make you feel comfortable and cared for.

Physical and emotional wellbeing

A well–fitted bra isn’t just about comfort – it can relieve tension, improve posture, and even help you heal better. But beyond that, it’s an experience that offers emotional support, reminding you that you’re not alone on this journey.

CONCLUSION

Breast health challenges are a lot to navigate, but finding the right bra doesn’t have to be. A professional fitting isn’t just about lingerie; it’s about finding something that supports you – physically, emotionally, and practically. No matter where you are on your journey, the right bra can make a difference in how you feel, every single day.
