Neighborhood Press | dwell In Los Angeles, a Streamline Moderne With a Modernist Addition Asks $2M Actor Judd Nelson, perhaps best known for his role in The Breakfast Club as bad boy John Bender, is rumored to have once occupied this L.A. residence. But what makes the home truly unique is that it was designed by renowned Southern California architect William Kesling right after he founded his own firm. Kesling went on to design more streamline moderne structures than any other architect, a collection that includes the Vanderpool and Skinner residences in the Silver Lake neighborhood. Nestled in the Cahuenga Pass neighborhood, the home is now owned by trauma surgeon Edward Kwon, who was impressed deeply when he first visited Kesling’s design. The house “commands attention as you approach it, standing proudly on its small summit like a dirigible floating above Los Angeles,” Edward says. “The main windows are definitely one of the most obvious features, eyes wide open staring at the hills.”

Neighborhood Spotlight Marina Del Rey The small, affluent community of Marina del Rey, which is gaining popularity thanks to spillover from Silicon Beach, is home to around 9,000 people and 6,500 boats. The world’s largest manmade small craft harbor features 19 marinas and the New England-style Fisherman’s Village, which hosts live music, fishing, harbor cruises, and boat rentals. From architectural, eco-friendly lofts and ocean view penthouses to Mid-Century Modern homes and new constructions, there’s a bit of something for everyone. As a bonus, architecture firms such as KAA Design Group, SFJones Architects, and Sorenson Architects are all headquartered here. You’ll find local residents enjoying a sunset cocktail at the California Yacht Club, taking in the Summer Concert Series at Chace Park, and biking around the Ballona Wetlands—that is when they aren’t on the water.


Neighborhood Press | LABJ As Brokerages Consolidate, DPP Vows To Stay Independent Pasadena-based brokerage Deasy Penner Podley is partnering with San Francisco-based Side Inc. Deasy Penner Podley, which is now going by DPP, said it will use Side’s technology to enhance its offerings and expand. Although DPP has extensive in-house operations already, Chief Executive George Penner said Side — which provides technical and back-end operations to brokerages — would help it improve various operations, strategize and build long-term business, in addition to providing managerial support. Penner co-founded DPP in 2005 with Mike Deasy, and it has grown to more than 300 agents and $1.5 billion in sales annually. The brokerage has earned a reputation for specializing in homes designed by famous architects or that have historical pedigree.
