The Principal’s Pen, Dear Parents, A perfect Spring day ensured that the entire community enjoyed our Carnival in the Park. The students are most accustomed to this temporary training area and performed very well in all events. The Carnival was a delightful combination of fun and true athletic prowess with everyone enjoying the opportunities to participate in a supportive atmosphere. Congratulations to all competitors and well done to the winning faction Sea Eagles. Thanks to Dan Rodgers, staff and parents for the planning, setting up and smooth running of the event. Special thanks to Suzie and Karen for the chance to sip quality coffee that sustained the commentators and many others in attendance. The P&C run sausage sizzle and cake stall were kept busy all day and added a wonderful dimension to this annual event. We look forward to a similar success when we move our carnival to the new oval in 2012.

Pictured above - Kindy Dash 2011 School Farm Working Bee – 24th September On Saturday the 24th of September between 9.00am and 12.00pm we will have a working bee to relocate plants in the school farm and begin to clear the area in preparation for the construction of some of the Blake Willis designed elements. Blake held a highly interactive presentation for staff on Friday after school. Although we went home with heads spinning about the endless design possibilities of the Fibonacci spiral we were truly content that this project will deliver all the elements that a school community could desire in terms of promoting sustainability programs. Assembly Please join us on 16th September for the final school assembly for Term 3. The event will be hosted by Mrs Foster’s Year 1/2 class. Mrs Hassan Rayait’s assembly on Friday was a great community event with wonderful items that supported our resilience programs. Holly P and SIMS student Gabrielle H performed lovely piano pieces and we applaud their dedication that enables them to deliver such quality musical outcomes.

School Buildings & Grounds It is unfortunate that our new oval was not ready for the Carnival yesterday but there is still work to be completed and a safety fence erected. I am aware of community concerns about the proximity of the goal posts to what will be a busy traffic area. I have been advised that a 6 metre fence the same height as the goal posts will be erected along the grass line. Once this area is open to the community we will need to put in place stringent rules for students accessing the school via the path that runs beside the staff car park. This will be a very busy area at certain times of the day and it is essential that we plan to keep our children safe. Road Safety All members of our community are highly valued and we were shocked to hear one of our parents had been involved in a collision with a vehicle at the intersection of Deanmore and Newborough Roads. These intersections are hazardous and call for vigilant attention to road signs and speed limits. Thanks to the great work by Annie Willis we now have much enhanced safety near our school. The Department of Main Roads has approved a trial of 40km signs to be placed at either end of the reserve on Newborough St. If this does not contribute significantly to traffic calming then other measures will need to be put in place. The school acknowledges the great support the community has received from The Hon Minister Troy Buswell MLA, Hon Liza Harvey MLA and our very own quietly determined and ever patient Annie Willis. Deanmore P&C Website We are without a doubt a fortunate community to have parents such as Ross Parker and Amanda Collett who have given so much time and expertise to the setting up of this outstanding website. It really is a hub where parents from across the globe can access information about our school and as of Term 4 read the school Newsletter online. We consider we can produce a much better newsletter electronically and the link to access the newsletter will be emailed to all parents each Friday fortnight. Bulletin on-line The Deanmore P&C Bulletin is now on-line thanks to the amazing work of Karen Miller. Karen has put in many, many hours of work to create an inspiring and vibrant e-newsletter to replace the paper version that has been such a valuable communication tool for the P&C over many years. Not only does the new e-bulletin look fantastic it has helped reduce our carbon footprint and will save valuable resources in it' s new electronic format. Karen continues to make an amazing contribution to the Deanmore P&C and community though her tireless work and we thank her for taking on the challenge of developing the e-bulletin and doing it with such professionalism, creativity and good will. Jeanette Metcalf School Principal NAPLAN NAPLAN results for the children in Years 3, 5 and 7 should arrive at Deanmore next week. The children’s NAPLAN reports will be sent home soon after.

Safe Behaviours Please continue to instruct your children on safe behaviours on the way to and from school. Suggestions are available from the office.

PEAC Congratulations to the 24 children that were offered places in Round 3 of PEAC. Notes have been sent home.

Factions 2012 It is most likely that we will need four factions in 2012 due to our increased enrolment. The faction will most probably be Gold faction (as it was in the past), and may be called Sea Stars or Sea Serpents or Sea ??? Methods for creating the new faction will be discussed with the community.

Visitors to Deanmore Primary School All visitors to Deanmore must sign in at the office before entering the grounds and must sign out when leaving the school. Leave Passes Parents or carers must sign the book at the office whenever taking children out of school during school hours. Children are not to leave the school grounds without being signed out first. Photographs Please read the instructions on the envelope sent home with your child. Scarborough Baptist Outside School Hours care "Every year our Outside School Hours Care chucks a big Birthday Bash to celebrate being open for another year. This year we thought we would combine it with trying to open the kids eyes to those in the world less fortunate than ourselves. We have decide to get behind World Vision’s east Africa Emergency Appeal. In Eastern Africa, up to 13 million people are being affected by the worst drought in decades. Combine the drought with civil war, and a very impoverished starting base, & the result is a crisis beyond all proportion. People often get behind immediate crises such as earthquakes and tsunamis but when it is a slow build up disaster like this, it is often hard to gather momentum. Here’s your chance to get involved, why not come along to the carnival on Saturday the 10th of September, from 10 till 2? Ten bucks gets you entry then all entertainment free (bucking bull, dunk tank, bouncy castle, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, balloon twisting, magic show, competitions, etc – see attached poster), it should be a really fun time. If you can please post the poster on facebook, or promote it within your organization/contacts to spread the word, we are really trying to raise as much dough as possible for this worthy cause. All proceeds go to World Vision’s East Africa Emergency Appeal. Also listen out for Tim Costello (CEO of World Vision)on Sonshine FM – we have secured him to give an interview to raise awareness of what’s going on in Africa and to highlight the Carnival. Hope to see you there." Parents – please note that any advertisements of a community nature are only placed in our newsletter if there is space. The school takes no responsibility for the quality or value of any goods or services offered.
