The Principal’s Pen, Dear Parents, The pace of the term is certainly picking up and this week it was wonderful to enjoy Harmony Day which was such a wonderful tradition at the old Deanmore site. Dan Rodgers planned a sensational program with the kites and the Deanmore community supplied the most amazing taste sensations for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to the wonderful parent helpers who managed the multicultural canteen with great patience and skill. Linda Dunlop a former Registrar at Deanmore called in last week before returning to her home in West Africa. Linda was a staunch supporter of the quest for the new school and was delighted to sit in such salubrious surroundings with the staff.

Safety House Community stalwart and parent Sonya Greaves was a very popular guest at Deanmore last week as she presented the prizes for the Safety House Competition. Sonya was assisted by the Year 7 students and Ima the Safety House we have become accustomed to seeing about the school. Special thanks to Sonya for her commitment to this very important community initiative and a huge thank you to those who provide safe havens for our children. Sonya is handing the baton to Maria Ingram and if the initiative is to stay viable and grow we need to give Maria all our support. School Council At our meeting on Tuesday we worked through a long agenda of issues that impact on all students. We received the Financial statements and endorsed the 2011 School Budget. There was a unanimous vote of support for the school to proceed with an application for Independent School status in 2012. This is not automatically bestowed and requires much time and commitment from the community to achieve the status. At the P&C Meeting on Monday evening I will distribute additional information to the parents in attendance.

Young Leaders Conference Clint Holland accompanied 15 students from our Year 7 class to the Convention Centre on Monday the 21st March. All students enjoyed the opportunity to link with many students from across the state as they listened to inspirational stories of leadership from guest speakers. Surfing It may not be a well known fact but very early on Thursday mornings Dan Rodgers meets a group of Deanmore students and joins them in surfing lessons with 3 instructors from Surfing WA. This brilliant program will finish in week 11. Year 5/6 Assembly Claire Martin’s students really put on a red carpet performance at their assembly this morning. They entertained us with a humourous Assembly poem by Sally Murphy and then showed us their star potential with some amusing look - alikes of the big screen. Congratulations to the class and well done on the effort you put in to your rehearsals. Also congratulations to Student Councillors Jamie and Jack who did a brilliant job of presenting the Merit Values Awards. They are developing outstanding public speaking skills and we will see more of their fine abilities on display at the ANZAC service to be held on 19 April at the school. French Lessons Dr Flavia Waters has very kindly offered to tutor a group of Junior Primary students in beginners French. This instruction will occur each Thursday between 3.15pm and 3.45pm. I will be making offers to the selected children early next week. Landscaping Although our school is very new we need to have a long term vision for the grounds and playing areas. The garden where we plan to raise vegetables and grow fruit will need to be redesigned to accommodate our needs. Also the area adjoining the Administration block is a wonderful setting for a peaceful meeting place that we had long planned for at the old site. If anyone would like to donate their planning expertise to the Building & Grounds Committee please contact me. Voluntary Contributions We get numerous requests from parents asking if they have paid these contributions. Next week the office staff will send home letters requesting that you consider paying these voluntary contributions that will assist with the purchase of additional computer equipment. To date we have collected 66% of contributions.

Asbestos Update Parents continue to make contact with queries about the safety of the site. I can only reassure them with the advice given by the Department of Education Principal Environmental Consultant Gary Patrick. However, due to the high winds and the amount of dust we are experiencing on this site I have asked Building Management and Works Dept to organise for the area to be stabilized with a surface spray. Independent Public Schools (IPS) Workshop 5th April In addition to the advice already given to the community on IPS we will hold a community workshop on 5 April at 6.30pm concluding no later than 8.00pm. At this workshop IPS Principals will speak and we will consider ways in which Deanmore could benefit from the IPS model should an application be successful. Janet Pettigrew will host the workshop that will be held in the school conference area. Diana Rigg Workshop Woodlands Primary School has kindly offered some places to our K, P and Yr 1 parents for a Diana Rigg workshop. This will be held at Woodlands PS on Thursday 14th of April from 9am to 10am. Diana Rigg is a Speech Pathologist and teacher who offers professional development to equip parents, teachers and anyone working with children to maximise literacy outcomes for 3 to 11 year olds. This Seminar will focus on developing foundation skills in literacy in the early years (3-5 year olds) and developing early literacy skills (6-8 year olds), and how parents can support literacy learning at home. Please contact Sharon in the office ASAP so we may secure some places. Jeanette Metcalf School Principal
